5 Good Morning Morons. Today is Saturday, January 16, 2016. On this day in 1919 the United States ratified the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, authorizing Prohibition in the United States one year after ratification. This was one amendment that should never have been brought up, much less passed and ratified. It was a huge mistake. It was repealed in 1933 with ratification of the 21st amendment. But by then organized crime had got a huge boost.

33 What really gets me is that most of the lastest inroads and indignities of the Muslim invasion is being done with the tacit approval of Europes so called leaders.

They too are being assaulted by agents of criminality and assault through the actions of their supposed leaders.

And it doesn't appear to be random it appears organized and with intent.

That's scary because if the elites have decided to eliminate an entire class of people then there's not much we or they can do legally until they are found out and ousted.

Meantime the invasions continues and our civilization falters.

And if it completely falls, things will get very bad, very quickly.

Let's hope Obama gets some credit for his work this time. Obama helped create the first market melt-down as one of the lawyers suing banks to force them to make home loans to unqualified minority borrowers (and then later as one of the senators demanding that Fannie and Freddie loosen lending standards and guarantee more shitty mortgage loans with taxpayer money). Obama never got credit for his work the first time around; claimed he had "inherited" the economic mess he helped to create from Bush. Bush certainly deserves some of the credit (he did, after all, champion the "no money down" home loan program), but Obama's efforts to destroy the real estate market and tank our economy should not have gone unpunished . . . er, I mean rewarded.

We have Holder on tape saying how kids have to be brainwashed on guns, told every day, not once a week. And the whole open borders thing has served only a few.

I put "free trade" in the same category of corruption, despite some feasible positive effects. It is globalism, and our trade supports oligarchs and corruption. American systems support a whole network of things (some we shouldn't), so it is not "fair" to trade with say China which essentially has slaves and pollution, and is an enemy.

But the left has used Holder style brainwashing to tell us "free trade" is how we achieve "world peace" or something. They don't care about a better world, the want dominance for "the 1%".

The CRA program started under Carter and was championed by Bwarney Fwank and Piss Dodd. But at that time it had no teeth. When Clinton got in the WH and was unopposed during his first two years he expanded the program and forced banks to make loans by changing banking regulations. But tevn then all was good during the massive housing bubble because when the CRA loans went bad the banks could repossess and turn them around to new unqualified buyers. Then the housing bubble burst and those repoed houses could not be resold and the banks had to eat them. Primarily Fanny and Freddy,

And who could forget Bwaney Fwank responding to Bush's call that trouble was on the horizon for FnF by saying everything was fine. There is a video out there that showed old Bwarney saying that just before collapse. Only Fox played iot and it only aired during that 2 hour special they ran on the collapse.

53 chipotle is having their problems for one of two reasons.

their produce isn't clean or their employees aren't cleaning themselves of the food properly.

Since it's happening all over I think we can eliminate a nation wide slack off of personal hygiene.

Food "organically" grown is filthy with germs.

A google for bacteria on your carpet will shock you. (yes even you neat freaks)

That's if you allow outdoor shoes to be worn indoors or even if it only happens occasionally.

The outdoors is filthy with bacteria. Human and animal waste and the products of decay of vegetable matter is mostly what "dirt" is made up of.

By buying only organic foods, they guarantee that it will be covered in bacteria and some will even have penetrated the food itself awaiting the right conditions to begin to grow.

Industrial/Modern farming and gathering will eliminate the majority of the problem bacteria. Field worker hygiene also will go a long way to lowering the odds of an outbreak.

But primarily, food preparation is paramount to safe eating.

And for salads an other such cold items it's a big problem to do correctly and effectively.

Chipotle has failed somewhere in the chain from farm to table.

There may just be an association between lack of sleep and Alzheimer's according to an article on medical research I read recently. Apparently the human brain does a lot of 'housekeeping' when we sleep. Little or no sleep means little or no housekeeping. That's the theory anyway.

It's been proven in the past that after three or four sleepless days hallucinations set in. So I'd rate the theory plausible.

61 some of those other e-coli outbreaks in "organic" lettuce came from one or two places selling under different labels. Most of those evil chemicals the food industry designed are safe and keep bacteria out of various steps of the process. Start taking those protections out of the several links in the supply chain and problems crop up.

Even in the field, skipping the more efficient chemicals can mean more damage to the fruit/veggie ... which means more places for bacteria or bugs. But the left exaggerates the findings on how evil those chemicals are. Sure, if one drinks the concentrate from the bottle it would be bad ... so is dish soap.

"Better living through chemistry" applies to our food industry ... "organic" is mostly a step backwards, but a marketing ploy for PC nuts. As with global warming crap, it gives the nuts more control, and they have their agents in the FDA and EPA. (though I think the FDA is mostly pretty good still, scientists that really don't want to kill us off) heh

the trial of Baltimore Police Officer William G. Porter was one vote
from acquitting him of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Freddie

80 Have Chipotle restrooms emit some signal. Force all Chipotle employees to install an app that *completely disables* the phone when it receives the signal. Then they will have no motive to use the phone when in the restroom.
Or have a medical technician periodically inspect phones.

81 I guess I missed the Ewok ranting on "free trade". that has been my rap, usually rejected by the "comparative advantage" crowd. But comparative advantage has failed us, and our tech also migrates away.

Mostly it has been union types that have pushed against the globalist free trade, and their source was the only one I could find that gave real numbers on the comparative advantage breaking down. It really just transfers power to other countries, but profits the corps (and investors, others) since they are only about profit from anywhere.

This is why Trump could maybe win MI, PA, OH, even NY. Cavuto had some business guys on defending Trump on his tariff talk. They say he wants to start from a position of strength, and think that is smart. We have been making bad deals, but corps love it .... and they buy our politicians, on the cheap. I think this is the source of some of the establishment hate for Trump and the "America First" stuff. The message finally is getting a voice, they say "shut up".

86 The globalist "free trade" bullshit rests on an idea that's been thoroughly discredited.

Conservatives (myself included) were absolutely wrong to ever believe that "what's good for GM is good for America."

Recent events have proved that all to be complete bullshit.

109 vic, I'm guessing Chipotle is more vulnerable due to their "organic" foods. They even have some "organic meats". Funny they claim to have "food with integrity" thanks to their non GMo stuff, and "organic" items.

But now that I think about it, I'm not sure if organic foods are more vulnerable to contamination once they've arrived at the store. There could be a layer of protective chemical residue still on some non-organic things that only gets washed at the last step, maybe. Or if the "organic"food is already breaking down faster, but not visibly, it could provide a better medium for the bacteria population to explode, I guess.

idk, I had one food science class decades ago ... I slept through most of it as it was right after working at a Kraft factory all night. Back in the days when people worked through college instead of going $100K in debt for that women's studies degree. ha

Wal-Mart "peddles fiction" about the state of the economy by closing nearly 300 stores. 10,000 employees hardest hit.

Posted by: firefirefire at January 16, 2016 06:27 AM

That was an interesting list in the Daily Mail who had a breakdown. A bunch were little grocery stores in dinky towns which I gather was a flop. Most or all in Texas and they compete with H E Butt (HEB) or Fiesta or a local chain. Regular store closures were in Baltimore, Oakland or St Louis (if I recall), etc so maybe shoplifting "shrinkage" killing profitability and this is an opportunity with other closures to get rid of the "crime" stores with a cover story. And WalMart has overbuilt stores and Sam's all over the place. Little, low population towns and counties with huge stores that are almost empty. AND people don't have any money to buy as much crap. This will increase profitability for the productive stores.

139 We saw Michael Fassbender in Macbeth last night. Possibly the worst filmed Shakespeare play ever. Huge chunks omitted, mostly the interchanges that make Banquo, Macduff, Malcolm distinct characters -- they all blend together as one redheaded guy in beard and warpaint. Every shot is murky, even Birnham Wood ablaze. Every shot is fuzzy; the two assassin's blades might be the only distinct edges in the whole movie. Marion Cotillard makes Lady Macbeth entirely boring. How is that possible?

Nice to have a "true conservative" I guess, and he has massaged his message pretty well so can say the right stuff. But Trump has the real global trade experience, and real executive office type experience. Making executive billion dollar decisions, after having 40 consultants advising ... and still making a profit ... that is completely different that a senator giving speeches (while alienating most other R's).

Cruz is cornering the market on the evangelical Iowa voter, but Trump is looking to win NY and MI in the general. A president won't change much on abortion or gay marriage, though it might be nice to hear what Trump plans for SCOTUS appointees.

America First on trade, and on closed borders, rebuild the military, confront the Muslim jihad ... are the essential items. Trump can infiltrate some union voters. Being too divisive on "we hate NY liberals" can be as poisonous as Akin's position. It seems too much of an "us versus them" position, where them is not the DC cartel, but half the population.

There are reports of people who years after having had rat lung cannot wear shirts or long pants because their skin is still so sensitive. There are victims who take daily doses of morphine to help them endure the nerve pain they still experience 2 and 3 years later. The inability to urinate, called Elsberg Syndrome, has been reported in other cases of rat lungworm. Rat lung victims may also experience hallucinations, disorientation, vision problems and visual impairment. Complete paralysis may set in. Short-term memory loss seems to be common in serious cases.

We saw Michael Fassbender in Macbeth last night.

TOTALLY DISAGREE.

As I wrote upthread:

Ted Cruz's "apology" to New York nails it out of the park. And by deftly enunciating the abject failure of liberalism in New York (and by extension elsewhere) he puts it out there for everyone to see. And guess who was once a Senator from New York?

By the way, Rudy screws the pooch by demanding Cruz apologize. He's establishment, as if we didn't know. I miss his mayoralty and thank him for that. But wrong on this.

In recent training about getting captured, it's recommended to go ahead and "apologize" or whatever, as long as you are not giving away any secrets. Everyone knows you don't really mean it, and you might make you and your fellows situation a bit easier. Same with the woman wearing the hijab. You can also slip a little bit of information out if you are clever enough (not recommended). Like the Hawaiian good-luck sign or morse-code eye blinking.

There's an ongoing low-grade shooting war going on against AQ in Western Africa, and BF is part of it.

US considers BF an ally in the fight against AQ and has been running SpecOps missions out of there for at least 5 years. Used to do so out of neighboring Chad, too, but a coup there in around 2009-2010 made that a little tougher. Apparently, the hotel was where Western types would come and go.

206 Cruz is trying to "tag" Trump with the NY values thing. It was poll tested for Iowa, and a theme he has designed, not a flippant comment. It's hard to judge how it affects average Joes, as blog readers often have different hypersensitive takes. The underlying point he is getting at is just the Trump is liberal at heart.

"NY Values" strikes me as too hard a stance, even if it works for Iowan R's. But many think it resonates, so I don't know. I like Trump not for his conservative history (obviously) but because he inspires a broad base of (disgusted) people. Cruz strikes me as more politician trying to say the right things to carve out enough Republicans to win Iowa. Which may work on us blogger people, but does Cruz inspire large crowds to cheer? Trump draws 10x the crowds, from what I've seen.

And to defeat the DC/NYC cartel, it may take a guy that knows how it works, from the other side. Cruz's big win was arguing against the World Court and Bush on not releasing a murderer, and other cases. Nice, but nothing like making a $5 billion business work. Trump needs to get up to speed on more policy though ... he's getting better. We'll see.

We'll see if the Trump "supporters" actually translate into Trump "voters." I suspect that they will.

That said, Trump is loud and boorish and not that well informed about the granular details of many issues. He also admitted at the debate that he was using the birther issue against Cruz because he was gaining in the polls. And to cite Laurence Tribe is a huge mistake; leftist Clinton supporter who will know be the go-to guy on this phony non-issue.

But in general, Trump's instincts - past verifiable wrong positions notwithstanding - though are spot on. He has struck a chord with America's justifiable rage of what has happened to the nation.

I really like Cruz a lot. He is my #1 candidate. I will vote Trump if he gets the nod. But Cruz would be an outstanding president. I think he really has the skills and the stones to stop the direction we're going and perhaps begin turning it around.

217 Cruz is trying to "tag" Trump with the NY values thing. It was poll tested for Iowa, and a theme he has designed, not a flippant comment. It's hard to judge how it affects average Joes, as blog readers often have different hypersensitive takes. The underlying point he is getting at is just the Trump is liberal at heart.

I think this is exactly right.

Or to put it another way: American values.

As distinct from "New York values." This gets to be one of those things Goldstein used to argue about on his blog (which I assume still exists in some form). It's about language and the intentions of the speaker, which MUST be given higher value than the listener's interpretation.

If you know what Cruz means by "New York values," and I've argued that any conservative living in New York probably knows what he means better than I do, because I don't live there, then getting upset by it because you are in New York has essentially NOTHING to do with Ted's words, but your own choice to be upset.

His meaning trumps (pun intended) your interpretation. You don't have to like it, but there it is.

This is a great pro-American, pro-American Exceptionalism, cross-cultural romance, life-choices, responsibilities of friendship, Americans in Europe, Cold War framed movie presented as a delightful though somewhat dark comedy of manners.

This movie has been out of print for since 1994.

I am very happy the Obama admin got off their butts and took care of a few Americans abroad. I know how weird that must have been for them, as it's not their SOP. However, prisoner swaps are so wrong.

302 I love me some Cruz and his legal brilliance, but
Trump has a history of successful senior executive management
experience. The presidency does not demand a detail oriented parsing
paragraphs approach, it requires a policy setting approach, with the
details implemented by trusted empowered associates. Trump would not
retain as a trusted employee anyone that really screwed up, they'd be
gone in days if not hours.

As far as short policy statements go, "We win, they lose!" comes to mind.

Posted by: Hrothgar at January 16, 2016 09:34 AM (wYnyS)

Although I think Trump is dead right on immigration and refugees and I LOVE how he doesn't apologize over PC bullshit, I have to disagree that the Presidency doesn't demand detail orientation. Reagan ("We win, you lose!") was very detail oriented about the philosophy of conservatism. His writings and speeches both before he was elected and after show deep thought and cohesive conservatism.
That is my issue with Trump... he can be right but he has never had a philosophy other than the art of the deal which has literally required him to be part of the kleptocracy. That is why he spouts off about tariffs and single payer healthcare without a clue as to why conservatives would object to those positions.

310 We saw Michael Fassbender in Macbeth last night. Possibly the worst filmed Shakespeare play ever.

A really good adaptation was a Robert Goold directed play where Patrick Stewart performs a contemporary Macbeth in a totalitarian soviet dictatorship during the cold war. It is vicious and dark. Lady Macbeth is cold blooded in her cruelty. The witches are three horrifying nurses. Great performances all around.

I believe that BBC filmed a 2010 performance and you can watch it on PBS or I think it is free on Amazon Prime. I was lucky enough to see it earlier in London.

I was happy when I learned Bay was doing this film because he knows how to do action scenes well(none of that shakey-cam use that makes it impossible to tell what's going on). He's also very respectful of the military, loves America, and has some conservative values not so hidden in his films.
