Loved the movie, but I like a slow pace. Tom Hardy wasn't good but he wasn't a problem. The central role of the natural world was very magical realism. I love Inaritu.

Is there a name for the linear, flowing, non-narrative style of photography he used? Or other notable movies made that way?

One of many reasons why life is cruel and shitty. When you have youth and health you don't have the time or money to do anything you really want. When you get the money you don't have the time, and youth and health are starting to become something you see in the rear view mirror. Then you have money and time, but no youth or health.

English actors, in the main, are still well-trained in vocal delivery. Americans are not, and really haven't been since the demise of the studio system. Ever wonder why so many actresses of the 1930s and 40s had a quasi-English tenor to their voices? Vocal coaches.

292 - but I think that this case was, indeed, consensual roughtrade that ended poorly. This is because - unlike with Amanda Knox - they arrested someone politically-incorrect.

There are plenty of other political-incorrect facts here, like the 35 year old woman who slips out on her boyfriend to go to sexclubs (because women never do that! they are all faithful to their men, especially to men they've kept around as boyfriend orbiters for seven years).

301 The lack of Prosecutorial supervision and punishment is way overdue for some action.

As it stands right now, they effectively are arresting officer, jury and judge.

And they are starting to really abuse the privilege.

This is mostly because of politics and lazy or complicit judges. They, technically, are the ones supposed to be supervising the prosecutors but with no investigative arm and no case law or laws on the books other than a code of conduct (hah!) the judges have a tough time reining them in and little incentive to do so.

320 Google-owned smart homeware company Nest has asked users to reset their connected thermostats after a software bug forced controllers offline and left owners unable to heat their homes. The company has confirmed that a software update error had caused the thermostat's batteries to drain, therefore making it unable to control the temperature. Users of the smart home device took to social media to express their anger at being left with cold houses. Some feared that the fault had put water pipes under pressure, risking burst plumbing.

they have a series that goes from a straight on/off for AC and heat to slightly programmed to full programming and they all fit the same base so you can plug them in.

369 The trouble with Nest, well, ONE of the troubles, is their insistence on pushing out software updates automatically. They did it to my Protects and removed the wave-to-silence functionality without asking me or letting me know first. Not surprising that they would do this to the thermostat as well.

They are also far too optimistic when it comes to compatibility specs. Simply put, you HAVE TO HAVE a separate power line for this thing. It just won't work right if you're piggybacking off the power supply of the air handler like they say for you to do. Plus if the battery in the unit goes dead you have NO WARNING about it. No, it just dies and you're left wondering why the system isn't working.

It had some good advantages when it came out, but now it's just more hassle than its worth.

There's no reason to have your thermostat online, to begin with. Any software updates could be downloaded by the owner and installed in the system via SUB flash or the like.

I cannot understand why anyone would want to have their thermostat online. Not for any reason, at all. The software shouldn't be updated all that often, anyway. I mean .. it's a friggin thermostat. If it worked taht horribly that they "HAD TO" update the software today then I think the users of it would have known already that it's shit. Otherwise, it works fine and the new update doesn't really do much of anything important.

It seems that so many companies are demanding that their products be online for nothing more than constant updates to simple software that is generally unnecessary. And then you have the cable companies (comcast, at least) that actually RESETS the friggin boc every single night ... turns the fucker off and on while you're watching something ... every damn night. I think they just do it for fun.

I did a quick search and don't see the answer to that. A state income tax would be based on state of residence. If a Pa resident bought a lottery ticket in NY, while passing through, I don't see them charging the pa resident as 'earning income'. Don't know, but wouldn't mind having the problem.

Some states only allow 90 days to redeem ticket. Might be tough to move in that time.

If gas and oil prices keep going down then little home generators could actually be price competitive for power with electric utilities. There were bull sharks in the big lake, Lago de Nicaragua, aka Cocibolca, but apparently former dictator Anastasio Somoza made a deal with a Japanese fishing company who came and fished them all out (to the universal dismay of people whose children played in the lake).

I hear tell now, that they are reestablishing themselves in the lake, by virtue of swimming up the Rio San Juan from the Caribbean. I guess bull sharks can tolerate the change from salt water to fresh.

But I am at Laguna de Apoyo, which is clear fresh water, and the only fish are small perch-like critters, AFAIK. You can eat them, not the other way around.

427 Just moving probably wouldn't work. Especially in the snake states like New York and Connecticut.

If you were in the state long enough, they would claim part of your winnings no matter where you were now.

And the state you moved to would also claim some of your winnings as being a resident. And I think you're wrong about PA not taxing powerball winnings.

When I moved it was a nightmare but I had kept receipts so I could prove when I moved and how long I was in each state. I still had to pay some income tax to both.

So be careful especially since winning the lottery is automatically noted by the IRS and they share their information with the states.

I'm sure the conversation has moved on, but I thought that guy was way more attractive than alan rickman.

But he had annoying mannerisms and was a liar who took advantage of others and cared only for himself. Brandon was the better man.

But I always felt kind of bad for him because Maryanne was so obviously settling at that point. So I never really knew what to make of them. It didn't help that in the movie, she was age appropriate for jane austen and alan rickman was probably in his 40s, unlike Emma Thompson who was awfully old for that part.

The leftists in this country, upon seeing the cheering, the crying, the enthusiasm for Dear Leader in North Korea really do think it is honest, spontaneous and heartfelt.

Remember: They are stupid, stupid people who have absolutely no ability to even consider the possibility that someone else thinks differently than them and has legitimate reasons for doing so.

So, forcing someone to "clap loudest" for the cause is not coercion--it's allowing your true beliefs to show.
They're giving you the freedom to drive out the wrong-thoughts you really didn't believe anyway.

687 Votermom, if you search under "boric acid" and "wood", you'll find a ton of various recipes for easy to brew up moldproofing concoctions. Powdered boric acid should be at any hardware or home improvement store, and it's cheap. Dissolves readily in water. Paint it on, let it soak in and dry, presto, done.

Note that some of these recipes come out of the boatbuilding community, who tend to add further things like glycol to get the boric acid solution to more deeply penetrate the wood fibers. I wouldn't use that in a household application. Messy.

"Haley embodies the kind of party Ryan in particular is trying to build: even-tempered, reform-minded, pro-business and open to minorities."

Note the calumny here: the non=Ryan party is therefore distemperate, anti-business, hates those darkies, and hates reform. Reform being defined as "moving to the left."

701 I've been racking my brain cell for days trying to remember Bob Newhart's name. Bob Newhart, the guy who does a one sided telephone conversation leaving you to imagine the other half of the conversation.

It all started when I watched the movie, "Dr. Strangelove, and how I came to love the bomb." and the character playing the US president does a long telephone conversation with the Russian President just like Bob Newhart, and I was tormented 'cuz I couldn't remember Bob Newhart's name. Drove me crazy. How do you look up, google up a name you can't remember?

Under the water tank. And the wall behind the toilet. I just checked mine again. Black. So I mixed up about four ounces of borax and 12 ounces of hot water, filled spray bottle. I wiped off blackness then sprayed the hell out of the area. I'll repeat daily for a week just to be sure.

The wife has been complaining about her eyes watering a lot lately. Probable cause.

708 Wow.

The Miami Herald is reporting that the GOP-approved, Spanish-language version of the SOTU response speech differed in some very significant ways.

The English-language version said we must secure our borders and stop illegal immigration.

The Spanish-language version said we must enact a legislative solution that will "offer a permanent and humane solution to those who live in the shadows" -- i.e., amnesty.

Un-f*cking-believable how the backstabbing GOPe thought they were going to get away with talking out of both sides of their corrupt mouths.

And they wonder why Trump's numbers are so high.

Pete Wehner used to pen excellent, devastating disassemblies of Dem nonsense about Iraq and the GWOT, in his WH days. These gems were, of course, distributed *only* internally - rarely saw any element of them in the public square. Part of the still-unfathomable Bush public information strategy of silence in the face of hallucinogenic media and Dem distortion and slander of the country and its policies.

Since then, only times I've seen his stuff, it has been the perfect model of clueless Beltway GOP silliness. All emotion and mythology and signalling, no substance or insight.

Note: there was no anger or intolerance involved in the writing of this comment. No delicate sensibilities of ignorant, NPR-listening lightweights were deliberately ruffled in the making of this comment.

Good catch, TrivialPursuer. And yes, wow. Well, "wow" would have been appropriate, say, 10 years ago? By now? Just another day in an unrecognizable place that physically resembles the US.

I especially like "legislative solutions" to, um, unenforced laws. Which, for those new to the topic, are, um, based on previous "legislation".

This is the poison (the Alien acid blood) that has hollowed out the civic culture and the institutions and probably will never be expunged in our lifetimes. If words don't mean what they mean, and that is to be decided by the whim of judges and temporary office-holders, and laws are to be enforced only at the whim of the same parties, then there is no rule of law, and equally important hardly any means to rectify the situation.

Save for one thing: elections that actually have consequences. Problem, when the electorate is dumbed-down and lazy, there is no press, and the inertial wealth and security of US society (for now) ensures that the worst (leading edge) aspects of decline are limited to the fringes, or select groups. Toss in an audaciously irresponsible make-believe public finance and monetary system (both of recent vintage), and you have the formula for a long, slow burning times. Which is what we're in right now.

720 Problem, when the electorate is dumbed-down and lazy, there is no press, and the inertial wealth and security of US society (for now) ensures that the worst (leading edge) aspects of decline are limited to the fringes, or select groups.

This is the key. We've had lying corrupt politicians in the past. We've had cronyism between mega corps and the government before. We've suffered incompetent radicals in high office. We've had stupid, corrupt, and extremist judges making crazy rulings in our history.

What's new now is the public is so stupid, so government reliant, so weak, so emasculated, so ignorant of history and economics, and so incapable of rising to any challenge that its all coming down. That's the real cascade; not preference, but misery. The stupid, the hapless, the ignorant, and the lazy have become the majority and further have enough power to control what we get and where we go as a country. And that spells disaster for the republic.
