And while a considerable minority of those worthy scientists and engineers profess islam as a faith, every one whose work makes life better for the human race is working outside of the Islamic world. Not one of the labor-saving, wealth-creating, suffering-destroying, and life-enriching technologies you will use today, whoever you are, was conceived and brought to market in that part of the world under any of the flags of mohammedanism. Welcome to the Humiliation Phase of Carter II There is a dispute about what happened - one of their boats was disabled, and they say they were in international waters, the Iranians said they weren't. USC Students Required to Detail Sexual History Before Registering for Classes A mandatory online course at the University of Southern California (USC) asks students to disclose the number of sexual encounters they have had over the past three months and teaches students to ask for consent by saying "how far would you be comfortable going?" and "would you like to try this with me?" The university has since removed the requirement but you have to ask what were they even thinking. Of course up to the 1970s Ivy League universities used to take nude photos of all incoming freshmen. Bookworm on the Ugly Reality of Islam and Rape Even if people had previously been disinclined to doubt these figures, after Germany's Syrian-refugee rapefest on New Year's Eve, the truth is coming home and its coming home hard: Muslim men rape. It's their culture. Norway's polite little "do not rape" talks will not change this culture. It is bred into the religion and the culture flowing from that religion. More than that, Mohammed made it quite clear that rape is an instrument of conquest and it is, indeed, a part of jihad. Consider it a Muslim man's moral obligation to rape non-Muslim women (or, if he can get away with it, to rape Muslim women too, since the fact that he can rape them by definition means they must be bad Muslims). If you want a rape culture, don't go to an American campus; go to any Muslim majority community that has contact with Western women. Wisconsin High School Students Banned from Negative Chants Lest their opponents' fragile egos be damaged by the mere suggestion of lacking athletic prowess. Look how Veronica is away from the others, almost as though they're leaning away from her. Veronica Lake was largely hated by almost everyone she worked with in Hollywood. Likely it was because of her mental illness.
And to the asshats in the last thread bashing Maet for Yoko Ono something or other. I don't know what that's about, must have missed it, but you do realize if you keep it up you'll likely get an entire ONT devoted solely to Yoko Ono, right? I mean this is a guy who posted a contentless ONT as punishment for fucking around with Ace (which I still think was absolutely fucking hilarious). So don't tempt the fates. Jeez, it took so long for the ONT to come up that I had to type my rant in notepad because I was fuming so hard.
So here's my rant. Almost no one has even acknowledged -- must less attacked -- the assumption behind this whole illegal alien demand. "I feel threatened by your policies," the illegal alien tells Ted Cruz. "Someone like you makes me feel unsafe in this country." Says that in a belligerent tone, as if Cruz is guilty of something. Since when did this illegal alien wish become my obligation? American president owes big to Mexican dude? Look, Mexican dude: the guy who owes you shit is YOUR presidente. You want good public schools, strong institutions, non-corrupt cops, business opportunities, and clean water, then TELL IT TO PRESIDENTE ENRIQUE PENA NIETO. THAT'S who you need to take it up with. And if your government tells you they're sovereign and they'll do as they please, you know what you do next? You start a movement in your society. You tell your compadres, "Let's build a society for ourselves that's as cool as the ones the Americans built for themselves!" Then you all get together and have . . . a revolution. Oh, revolutions are difficult? War is hell? Yeah, I imagine that's what Jorge Washington's troops thought on Christmas Eve. In your case, you could probably pull off the whole thing without firing a shot anyway; probably all you'd need to do is stop paying bribes until your government collapsed. Okay, I'll be realistic: call a fucking general strike. I swear to God, if you were as willing to violate your own laws as you are to violate America's, you could have your country transformed overnight. Americans don't OWE you the things we shed blood for. Posted by: iforgot at January 13, 2016 10:42 PM (YOxw1) 20

The very fact that something is different means it is not the same, which means it is not equal. Whether the different culture is greater to or less than, say, American culture is (to be charitable) a matter of opinion. I think the lottery can pay the lump sum, that is money that just came in. I would not trust the annuity. It should not matter to the lottery, it used to be they bought an annuity from a big firm with the amount that will be your lump payment, but still you as the winner would have to trust that the big firm was not going to be socialized by the likes of Bernie S, or lose a ton of money in a Maddof scheme or whatever, and maybe they don't all do that.

In reference to the cash payout -v- annuity question.
There are several implicit assumptions in taking the annuity that may not be true. 1) That the currency will be worth the same or more over that time span. 2) That the entity paying out the money will still be in existence over that time span. 3) That it still will be possible to transfer the money to you over that time span. 4) That whatever government(s) are in power over that time span will not simply confiscate the payout. Probably are more to consider too. All those may in fact be true, but just one being found to be false surely shifts the benefit to immediate possession and use -v- delay. Remember, that no matter which you take, you net out as being in a far better position than if you had not won the lottery. And that we are in "interesting times" where resources in hand may mean life or death. "Considering how the 'wars' on drugs, poverty, and terrorism are going under his direction, well, prepare to die." Far be it from me to defend Obama about anything at any time, but no president from Obama back to LBJ, inclusive of LBJ, was able to make the War on Poverty work even briefly. No war will succeed if the wrong targets are attacked. No President has ever successfully questioned or changed the targeting of the WoP. Reagan _as a candidate_ asked pointed questions, but then in office, instead of reforming or abolishing existing failed domestic "wars", relaunched another one: the on-again, off-again War On Some Drugs. Lauren at 61 FTW!
Damned right. I'm a pretty religious old-school Roman Catholic (Latin Mass, anyone?) and my belief is that Islam was created by Satan as a direct result of having his ass kicked by Christ's death and resurrection. YMMV, of course but when you consider how anti-life Islam is, and how its adherents are considered slaves of Allah, it makes a lot of sense to me to see it that way. It took Satan 700 of our years, just a blink in his cosmic war against G-d, to come up with Islam. And now a fifth of the world is hopelessly infected with a life-destroying scourge we will never be able to completely defeat. Makes me ill thinking about it. As leftist policies take their toll, the Reds will, like ticks, be hungry for money, any money, and will do anything to get their hands on it. For the record, I'm going to laugh my ass off when CA hoses its public sector retirees as it continues its power dive into the toilet bowl. So, if Obama wanted to embarrass the United States and the US Navy what would he have done differently with those two boats in the Persian Gulf?
Obama, himself, wasn't embarrassed because he is the light bringer. He wasn't responsible. It was the Navy, someone at the Pentagon. Sure, the Iranians used the incident to score propaganda points, but again, that was at the expense of the Navy and the Country, not Obama personally. It has always been Obama who is trying to prevent these unfortunate incidents from happening. That was why he negotiated a new diplomatic relationship with Iran. Praise be to Obama. Data shows around 60 to 70% of lottery winners are broke in 5 years. Among the poverty class that number would be close to 100%, and it would be in a lot less than 5 years. Can't fix stupid with money.

So nicely said, Cthu. I've never had to deal with Altz, thank heavens, but it seems about as awful as can be, losing the memories, losing the relationships, is losing oneself. There are other horrible ways to become estranged. Folks should feel free to pray (fwiw) for my sibling, once brilliant and creative and would-be spiritual, now isolated for many years, paranoid, vengeful-minded, threatening - heartbreaking for our 95yo mother who lies awake at night sometimes worrying about him. And then there's just coma. You don't even know if they're in there at all anymore. Although, I have to say, talking to my step-father - a hard-ass man I didn't get along with, but holding his hand while he was comatose - telling him Mom would be okay, that he didn't have to worry, and he could let go, and having him pass within a day or two after that, you might assume that somewhere inside, they're still listening, no matter what it seems like. 497 I saw 13 Hours last weekend at an advanced screening held at the PX theater. Pros- excellent attention to detail on Arab world atmosphere. Language barriers, inshallah attitude, and the feeling of being in someone else's pond where the joke was on you. Good weapons and equipment handling. Good unit dynamic. Cons- could have used a map early like Raiders of the Lost Ark. While the authorization issues for aid were touched on, the viewers will have to Google to see where the chain of command went. Still, other scenes clearly showed US forces, both air and land, getting ready in Europe then suddenly... Not. In all, quite well done. I'm doing OK-ish, went to a job fair in Lake Charles today. I'm unemployed, and in between looking for work I've been watching the MIT Beginning Programming With Python course.
I guess I should be starting a book of my own, while I have all this free time. Ugh. I have some ideas for a semi-pulpish SF book... I swear, I have had this idea brewing for a while... the planet the main characters operate out of has three different intelligent species: humans, "spiders," (may or may not be related to terrestrial spiders, they have a bit more legs), and something kinda like velociraptors. (You can see the visual inspiration for the latter at http://tinyurl.com/gud6n2b. (I think. They may have changed that file since I last looked at it, and I can't look now, I don't have flash on this machine). Anyway, the civilization there... doesn't know whether or not the spiders influenced certain native american cultures way-back-when, but some people speculate. There's a widespread belief that some of the spiders may be holding back re: sharing technology, and historical data, which isn't helped by the existence of a masked vigilante performing super-spider feats while Battling Crime, but who sarcastically claims to have gotten strange powers after being bitten by a radioactive human... but I digress. The _Viewpoint_ characters don't know a whole lot about that, and could care even less. They're working stiffs who have been retained to deliver a gift horse to the King of Iz, which involves a couple weeks' worth of flight on something with a cargo bay about the size of a C-5's. (Along with various other cargoes). All I have to do now is come up with a tie-in for the velociraptor types too... any ancient human cultures out there with legends of bird-demons who taught humans the arts of war? Hmm. Just kidding. I won nothing. As always. Big fire across the street from the "office" tonight. Noticed it when a couple of "booms" shook our building. It's a gas station/quickie mart that had the (separate building) car wash burn. Saw it before the firemen got there - roaring! Now, no more smoke, looks like they're not hosing it down anymore, but still lots of trucks and flashing lights. Exciting! News says the manager called 911 then turned off the gas pumps and got everyone out immediately, and the fire was never near the pumps, and the tanks were underground of course, but, still... Helluva thing, those guys rushing in to a gas station on fire! Time to pack up the tablet and head for the ol' ranchero. If I don't get back, and I probably won't, let this be my Good Night, Gracies. Your bringing them up is a flawed argument. Illegal aliens are a problem, but they didn't push through a Constitutional amendment (which Prop. 98 was) to butter their own bread at everyone else's expense. We could reverse the illegal alien problem tomorrow if we had the political will to do so. Bottom line: the teachers' unions pushed for Prop. 98 (mandating that 39+% of the ENTIRE STATE BUDGET went to K-12 education, and most of that went to staff salaries and pensions, basically saying fuck the taxpayers, we want ours. The teachers' unions agitated for the sweetheart - and unsustainable - deal they got, the one that is helping to bankrupt the state. Contrast that with veterans. And teachers in no way shape or form are equivalent to combat veterans (except maybe in Compton), so don't even think about wrapping your situation in with theirs. Furthermore, veterans' pensions are paltry compared with California teachers. There's a reason the state's unfunded public sectory pension liability is conservatively estimated (by the LAT) to be northwards of $350 billion. Well the problem with the pensions is the same as with Social Security. Everyone knows it is an unstable mess that will collapse in on itself, but people have also made retirement plans and decisions based on it. So if you just go yank it all away, you leave all of these people with no recourse. You have to reform it in a way that holds harmless as many people as possible.

Except the retirement demanded by public sector
unions (in lieu of current salary payment demands that were never going to happen in any world) and promised by politicians were unsustainable and, unlike with a private company's pensions, the people promising the money were not going the people on the hook to pay it. That was the sucker taxpayers. Posted by: redbanzai at January 14, 2016 12:45 AM (NPofj) Yep, and it gets worse: it was rampantly corrupt. I don't think anyone disagrees that the pension system is a mess and that future promises cannot all be honored. But the solution isn't just to yank it all away, screwing everyone who was counting on those pensions. Seems to me the most sensible thing to do is to try to honor those pensions for those nearest to retirement, and then gradually replace the pension with a defined-contribution-based system for younger and younger workers.

SSI came about in 1933; Prop. 98 dates back to 1988, but many of the most egregious offenses have taken place since then. So people who are walking around now, and hoping to collect those fat pensions, are responsible for the problem. Gray Davis threw money at the public sector unions, who in turn threw some back to him, while Democrat politicians and corrupt unions played pat-a-cake at the taxpayers' expense. (Davis was recalled because he blew the entire dot com tax windfall on the unions, and then, when the dot com bubble burst, was faced with a massive budgetary shortfall.) I don't know anything about his situation; I'm talking about the teachers' unions generally. Their leadership made a huge grab for everyone else's wallet, presumably with the acquiescence of the membership. So if they overreached, and end up getting LESS than they thought, that's their problem. Turn it around: if they got everything they'd tried to grab, would they give any back to help the state through its fiscal calamity? Like hell they would. Here's a vignette of CA's toxic politics. A recent initiative (Prop. 17? I've forgotten the number) raised taxes to pay for "school building construction and maintenance." Sounds good, right? Where did the money actually go? Per the LAT (no less), to the fucking teachers' unions for juicy salary raises, that's where. "They hadn't received a raise in X years." Now the state is coming back and wants ANOTHER tax increase for ... wait for it ... school building construction and maintenance." I'm not making this up. Jay you're being too polite. In CA at least, the state "government" is in large respects effectively an extension of public sector unions - teachers' union in particular. The instrumentality is total control of one party. This would be - sit down - the Democratic Party of CA, of course. Recall the tales of union lobbyists walking into state senate offices and yelling - yelling - at senators in the open, in front of their staffs, bossing them around. Third World. This is the level of degradation of what was once, apparently, an impressive country. And its leading state. But Jay you blame the unions for what the *voters* did. Over and over, and still do. The idiotic bullet train was the voters' doing, ditto the absurd stem cell research institute. Also the propositions pushed by Arnold in his very brief stint as an actual governor (that is, their defeat was the voters' fault). I expect the thief to smash the display case to grab the watches. I expect the mobster to beat up the small businessman when he's late on his loan repayment. I expect the embezzling employee to lie. It's kind of their role, it's their job in the scenario. So I expect public sector unions, utterly bereft of a trace of public purpose or sense of responsibility, to cheat and steal as much as they can. To bankrupt the public as they destroy the world's best public education system. But the voters of CA are the ones to blame. When they finally get around to repealing Prop 13,the looting and ruination of the best place in America will be complete, and all but the illegals, the rich, and the public employee master class will flee. Unfortunately, those future taxpayers are going to want things like good roads, fire safety, and protection against bandits more than they'll want to pay for wet dreams of the ancient past (that likely amounted to nothing of lasting good). Posted by: cthulhu at January 14, 2016 01:30 AM (EzgxV) It's a good idea, but the problem (in CA) is even more fundamental than that: it's that even money borrowed for a stated purpose, once in hand, is spent on whatever the politicians in charge want to spend it on. In short, it is a matter of lawlessness. I don't know what legerdemain they'd use, but I have no doubt that they'd find a way ("it's not a fine, it's a tax") to avoid forfeiture of an asset pledged as collateral. Voters - "manipulated" or not - are accountable for their votes. If they're too dumb, lazy, misinformed, and irresponsible to know how to vote - and yes, most of them are - then THEY are responsible for the mess. And doing away with general obligation bonds won't make lazy/misinformed/dumb voters any more competent. I don't think stem cell institute or bullet train were gen. obligation bonds, were they? It's the underlying, substantive idiocy of the proposition/idea that's the issue. Very, very few technical "fixes" will actually fix public policy idiocy, whether enacted by referendum or imposed from above. Balanced budget amendments won't balance budgets, term limits do not change anything (and already exist - they're called "elections" and "terms of office"). Only idea that seems worth trying is changing the very nature of a state legislature. That is,making the positions part-time, and the legislature's sessions very short. Those changes might help a bit, but still wouldn't change CA's fundamental decline and idiocy, which are rootedin thedegraded civic culture and practical intelligence of its voters and citizens. There's no way Proposition 13 could ever be repealed. At least the part about private homes. If Prop 13 disappeared, about half the senior citizens in the state of California would be homeless within the year -- including the parents of most voters.
The vast majority of people in CA over the age of 60 are "house-poor" -- they own a home that in and of itself is valuable, but have little free cash or income. They bought those homes back in the 1950s - 1970s, when they were cheap and affordable, and sat on them as their value skyrocketed, while the owners' earning power diminished as they aged and retired. Because of the high property tax rates in CA, even back in '78 it was becoming seriously problematic that a house bought for, say, $30,000 in 1975 was suddenly being reassessed by the county as being now worth $180,000, and taxed based on the new valuation. So even the people who got a good deal on a house just before the prices skyrocketed still ended up being royally reamed through outrageously high property tax rates on houses with outrageously high reassessment valuations. The crisis sparked the biggest tax rebellion since the Boston Tea Party, with the voters overwhelmingly passing a total freeze on future house re-evaluations; only a very modest rate never to exceed 2% a year at most. Furthermore, all county tax rates statewide were rolled back to 1% annually -- some counties had been starting to jack the rates up to 3% or more. Boom -- totally changed the landscape. Now, old people, poor people, retirees and "house-poor" young couples could afford to stay in their own homes. The effect was so powerful and long-lasting that it still is the dominant factor in California's economic psyche. Most families in CA have by now rearranged their finances to be based on living trusts, with the trust owning any real estate, so that children and heirs can be added as trustees, so the house is passed down with no change in ownership -- which would trigger a disastrous reassessment and an accompanying permanent dectupling or duodectupling (what's the word for 20x-ing?) of property tax bills in perpetuity. Aside from deranged leftists and ignorant college-age activists, no one wants to see Prop. 13 overturned. No one wants to suddenly have to take care of and house their grandmothers and aunts. It's a good idea, but the problem (in CA) is even
more fundamental than that: it's that even money borrowed for a stated purpose, once in hand, is spent on whatever the politicians in charge want to spend it on. In short, it is a matter of lawlessness. I don't know what legerdemain they'd use, but I have no doubt that they'd find a way ("it's not a fine, it's a tax") to avoid forfeiture of an asset pledged as collateral. Austrian economics correctly predicts that assets valued against non-sustainable debt will inevitably result in either (a) the assets being marked down to the debt; or (b) the debt marked down to the assets. Trying to say otherwise is like declaring that water will flow upstream -- it may be a pleasant conceit, but such a declaration has little practical value.
When you consider that virtually all of government is "malinvestment" writ large, you are left with either (a) nearly all government pensions and other assets of the public will be written off to the point where actual cash flows can support them; or (b) the debt supporting this spending edifice will be repudiated -- either honestly, or by debasing the currency in which it is stated. zombie, I didn't predict the imminent repeal of Prop 13, and I lived through its inception and know the deal with it. And prior to the last few years, I'd have of course agreed that such a thing was "unthinkable". Well. Since literally unthinkable and unbelievable stuff happens on a daily basis now - in fact it's routine - Ijust don't rule anything out. Forget repeal. How about cooking the frog slowly. Gradually sunset all the family transfer stuff you mentioned. Change the allowed re-assessment max, raise it s-l-o-w-l-y. Add to the trip wires that trigger re-assessment. Etc. As you well know CA voters already suffer significant economic damage inflicted by themselves at the ballot box (mostly based on "environmental" nonsense), or meekly, like good East Germans, accepted when Sacto imposes it (again absurd unscientific "environmental" crap, plus facilitating an ever greater influx of illegals, leading to myriad fiscal, public health, education budget/quality, and public safety disasters). And the likely millions of CA residents whose health "insurance" situation has been destroyed in the last two years - who knows or cares? What do those people do? (go without, for the first time in their lives, or try to stay lucky til Medicare kicks in) Point is, there are many examples of idiotic destructive policy changes that, unlike in previous eras, actually take place and are not effectively resisted. Inertia is the greatest force in nature, and that protects Prop 13, for now. But all previously existingspeed-bumps or guard-rails in American society - whether in the electorate or the institutions - can no longer reasonably be assumed to exist. http://blog.sfgate.com/hottopics/2016/01/13/ oregon-folk-singer-plans-to-soften-isis-with-his-sweet-music/ Oregon folk singer plans to soften ISIS with his sweet music While prolonged listening to folk music might make some people turn violent, an Oregon musician is hoping his concert of peace will transform the hearts of an entire terrorist organization. The extremely optimistic folk singer is planning a concert in Syria in the hopes that ISIS will hear his music and become pacifists/fans. Musician James Twyman will gather religious leaders from a variety of faiths together for his peace concert, which will be held on Jan. 31 in an ISIS-controlled territory just over the border from Israel. "It’s going to be pretty powerful," Twyman told Fox News. “When people come together and focus on something in a positive way ... there’s scientific evidence that it can change things for the better.” That's OK, the gene pool was getting kinda crowded anyway. Posted by: Adjoran at January 14, 2016 04:55 AM (QIQ6j) I was about 10 years after you and at my high school (and just in general) there were still valued notions of good sportsmanship. That only meant that you didn't try to win by some method other than just outplaying your opponent. Yelling insults at the opposing team and fans was fine, so long as it was distinct from the play and had no effect on it. I was always appalled at how basketball games were - among the colleges and the pros, were the fans would try to distract the opposing team, during play - waving stupid banners and things behind the net to throw them off. I always found all that to be very boorish behavior. Nowadays, that sort of behavior seems to have infested most sports - and the rest of society, as well. There is no sense of good sportsmanship left. Lefties only want to bring that notion (their perverted concept of it, at least) up when it has no place - like in war, where it's not a game. That was exactly the situation my freshly widowed mother with three minor sons still at home was facing in 1978. Sure, we could sell the place for a bundle but we'd have to leave the state to get anything comparable to replace it. The state knew exactly what was happening and why but somehow didn't think it was going to be a problem if a massive portion of its middle-class were effectively evicted and made to take their assets to another state. They actually had to put up a ballot measure to save the state from its own leaders. Yet now we have Jerry Brown again. So while the repeal of 13 would shock me, it wouldn't really surprise me. Evidently King Abdullah of Jordan was given the Bibi treatment by SCOAMF. Also, when he was asked about Trump, he said it wasn't right for a foreign leader to comment about an American election. I think he's in for Trump! Posted by: J.J. Sefton at January 14, 2016 06:29 AM (zLP1L) 577

Got my first lotto tickets in years ... matched 2 numbers ... out of 5 tickets. Was surprised the are $2 now and numbers like 69. sheesh ... 40 numbers was bad enough odds. Truly just a tax on the poor.
The Trump coup of the GOP is almost complete. They want THEIR party back. Just who do the voters think they ARE? You were given plenty of GOPe choices, and now you must be scolded repeatedly for not being graciously thankful for all the GOPe has done for you, you ignorant sluts. OK ... second cup ... good morning horde. Europe markets looking down again. Posted by: Illiniwek at January 14, 2016 06:46 AM (5Gpe2) 582
