The Horde is well aware of my contempt for the debacle of the Romney campaign and the utter refusal of the GOP boosters to accept that the man that they told us was the most electable and most competent candidate instead gave us ORCA. However, I think John McCain's actions recently are what have cemented my full scale and utter loathing of being told I have to listen to My Betters in the GOP about who can be elected. Here's my comment from yesterday -- it works better in this thread anyway:
I read somewhere that the backbone of Trump's support consists of people who identify as Republican, but are registered as Democrats. The author of the article interpreted this to mean: Reagan Democrats. That is, of course, absurd -- Reagan Democrats were pretty conservative, and they wouldn't be currently registered as Democrats, because that would (probably) mean that they voted Democrat in the last election -- that is, they voted for Obama. I don't think he won too many conservative Reagan Democrat votes. I take it to mean: Trump is the product of a Democrat Operation Chaos. First the Democrats rigged the Republican nomination in Florida in 2008, and gave us McCain, the worst possible candidate against a much younger and more hip Democrat. Then they rigged the game again in 2012 and gave us Romney, the one guy that couldn't run against Obamacare. And now they're going to give us Trump. And a few people here are falling right into their trap. Not everyone here supporting Trump has been fooled -- most of these new commenters supporting Trump surely were commenting at Democratic Underground a few months ago. You're in on the game. Bravo, Chester, well-played. Leftists are responding to polls by identifying as Republicans and claiming to support Trump, hoping to generate a preference cascade. They're probably actively going out and finding every poll they can. They'll register as R's in droves and push Trump to victory in every early state. And they he'll lose to Clinton, and we'll have an unindicted felon for a president, and she'll make 3 or 4 SCOTUS appointments, and they'll be about as bad as you can imagine. But Ted Cruz isn't a real American. Jesus Christ on horseback, I am at my wits' end. Posted by: Pastafarian at January 12, 2016 03:34 PM (LqrRo) 80

If he didn't actively seek it out and instead it attached to him by Canadian law without any effort on his part, then it really isn't a big deal to me. It actually does make Trump's concern about Cruz somewhat valid. Not his actual eligibility, but the fact that his opponents will attempt to claim he isn't eligible. Who here believes that it is completely out of the realm of possibility that if Trump does implode and Cruz has the delegates to win that some establishment hacks will try to have him disqualified before the convention so they can pick one of their preferred stooges? Really? Noting who the President is puts the whiff to that statement. He definitely shouldn't be President. Unfortunately, rules only ever are applied to Republicans. Americans just shouldn't have dual loyalties, and the bar is higher for someone that wants to be the chief executive of the country. Is legal citizenship the same as loyalty? Prima facie evidence of it. Not proof, but enough to have to explain. To reiterate, Cruz is my favorite of those still in the running, and I don't think this issue kills his candidacy at all. I do think it is a weakness, not a large one, but a weakness all the same, and for the sake of wanting him as President, I wish he didn't have to deal with it. Mark Steyn has an interesting take on a Trump rally.
I guess the only good of this is to, once and for freaking all, figure out if Cruz is ok. Of course, no one gave a dam in 2008. I am spending the day waiting on a repair guy (fridge, only appliance not replaced). Waiting. What I do best (not). So I have time to wait and think of Senor Penn, and his probable sweat flop paranoia of every noise these days. "Is that the cartel?" He is so arrogant he bragged about this loudly, in hotel, worrying that Mexican actress would beat him to the story. Now he worries if he will see manana. I also read why El Chapo's wife beater looked so filthy after his last near-escape. Apparently he was hiding in a sewer drain, like the rat he is. Also! Syringes of testosterone and Mexican viagra and videos of that actress found at the apt. I had to laugh at the vision of this little dwarf in his last hours of freedom. Anyway! I think Penn is jumpy, like a jackrabbit on meth. Probably alternately snorting lines of coke and taking ludes, smoking a doobie, or something he bought south of the border.Jumping beans. He probably hears crickets chirping from each side of house, decides it is code, grabs sawed off shotgun, and shoots his pecker off in excitement. You know, his prize peenie that has an entire paragraph devoted to (Rolling Stoned) it as he takes a whiz at the secret meeting. Penn, of course, freaks, and, of course, farhts with some soiling (also known as nincompoopie). Picks up Little Sean, made even smaller by blast, an runs around house thinking! Ice! Plastic baggie---dumps pot onto floor for this is only baggie! Milk? Oh, wait, that is for a loose tooth! Halp! Notes in mirror he is wearing a Beavis and Butthead stained tee, and quickly changes to his tux for trip to ED (wrinkled tux lying on floor after Madonna and he raise money in Haiti. Reeks of pot, but c'est la vie). Calls driver. Is seen in back of limo at stop light, lying down, fly open, clutching groin in one hand with the other holding baggie--- and loud music playing "Let's Get It On" by Marvin Gaye. Hanging onto consciousness by a thread of that paranoia. He arrives in nearest ED, screeching "Do you know who I am?" HIPPA! Obamacare! Staff, with tears in their eyes (perceived by Sean to be sorrow but actually nearly choking with laughter), ask "Are you Caitlyn? He screams, NO! and tells his name. Demands secret trauma room!!! His Hispanic doc looks at wound, mentions in Spanish to nurse that it appears "el chapo" (stunted) and Sean faints with his trademark farht. Lights out. Can they even get on the ballots in these states? I think if a major party says someone is their nominee, they automatically go on the state's general election ballots. So technically, Biden could get the nomination in a 'brokered convention' if there is no winner on the first ballot without ever running a campaign in each state. re 154: remember when Torricelli was forced out if the Senate race in 2002 or 2004? The Dems put up ancient Frank Lautenberg, the Repubs argued that it was past the deadline to replace a candidate, and the state Sup Ct basically said it was okay because people have a right to vote for whom they want to vote for, or some shit like that.
Point is, where Dems are involved, the only rule is that the rules can always be broken if it helps the Dems. Posted by: Satan -- tea time at January 12, 2016 03:52 PM (qSIlh) 182
Federal courts do not issue advisory opinions, there has to be an actual live case or controversy and there isn't one. A bunch of candidates sliming each other with the help of pundits and the blood-mad mob of internet typers (my favorite customers!) doesn't satisfy that requirement.

So. The (late, lamented) BFF was First Nations. I was up visiting her in Canuckistan and we were at Wal-Mart shopping for whatever and she was giving me shit, as she was wont to do, and we were walking past a display of blankets so I did the obvious thing and picked up one and held it out to her and said, very solemnly, "Here. That was the point at which she shoved the blanket in my face and started smothering me with it. 4 point or 5 point blanket? Rendezvouers will get it. Posted by: rickb223 at January 12, 2016 03:52 PM (lADRM) 184

-------------- Yes, there is a reason. The Court has no business being the arbitrater of such a dispute (though there is no dispute - or case or controversy - at least legally). Cruz does not believe in judicial supremacy (neither do I), so why would he put the Court in a position to be superior (even if were to declare him eligible). ||+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++|| Trump's Chumps are more than likely the working class whites that the Democrats have removed from their base coalition. The Dems want to appeal to Professionals (dcotors, lawyers, professors, bureaucrats) and aspirants to that class because that's where the $ is. To get the votes they appeal to the various SJ segments they've been organizing into communities and indoctrinating in colleges (the aspirants to the Pro class come from the colleges). Those are the 2 main groups. Trump's Chumps don't fall into alignment with either group so they lack a voice. The Unions kept them in the fold but The Unions aren't as powerful as they once were because the Blue State model (the three legged stool of Government Bureaucrats/Pols-Unions-Business) is collapsing and union membership is falling because Blue States have poor business environments which causes Democrats to lose elections. My point is, there is another explanation than the one you posit which seems too conspiratorial, complex, and organized to be plausible. Posted by: CozMark at January 12, 2016 04:00 PM (BjOkm) 215

I'm not suggesting a conspiracy between Trump and Clinton (although he has contributed to their family crime syndicate). McCain thought he could win, and so did Romney, and in each case, they were the worst possible candidate that we could have run, and they were chosen for us by the Democrats and their media.
It's time to nominate the most conservative candidate who can win. Period. Full-fuckitty-stop. That's not Trump. Posted by: Pastafarian at January 12, 2016 03:51 PM (LqrRo) They weren't the worst. They just didn't win. Enough with the superlatives. Millenials will only vote for a "cool" conservative. I hate that and what it means and everything that brought us to this place, but that is just the way it is. Trump is not only the only "cool" candidate in the republican field, he's NOT EVEN A REPUBLICAN. This is a feature and not a bug. The problem with identity politics is that it treats politics as an identity. Politics is not Trump's identity. And that's ok. I don't care what he did in the past, I don't care about his family or his money or his looks or whether his TV show was a worthy member of the golden age of television a la some 23,000 word Grantland pop culture article. I. Am. Not. Invested. In. The. Person. Americans are supposed to serve in a representative government as a duty, joylessly, without giving themselves awards and statues and parades, and then go home when they're done. Their identity is not tied to the office. Trump is a tool. But he's the right tool for this job. Posted by: Ghost of kari at January 12, 2016 04:00 PM (xuouz) 221

A country that hates America so much that they're on the verge of suing us in court to get us to take their petroleum from them, through a pipeline that an anti-American vetoed by Caesarean decree.
Cruz has no loyalty or fealty to Canada. Chrisakes, he was elected to the Senate by Texas! I think his enemies would get more mileage out of claiming Cruz would find himself with divided loyalties if Texas were to secede. Oh, God! Would he be loyal to Texas, or to the rest of what's left of America? Oh, the humanity! They only people that I think can make a fuss about this requirement are the actual members of the Electoral College. Or maybe the House if they refuse to certify the results. There really isn't a mechanism in place for determining what is eligibility under the citizenship requirement, the Constitution is silent on that. Perhaps an Amendment defining the citizenship requirement would be a route to go down, or just do what we do now and let each citizen voter make that determination in the voting booth. Antiwar candidate Eugene McCarthy forced LBJ from the race by nearly beating him in NH. LBJ's VP Hubert Humphrey jumped in. So did RFK, who got shot the night of the day he won the California primary. The Chicago Convention was a riot, literally. George Wallace went third party. Nixon said he spoke for the silent majority and won. History may not repeat, but it often rhymes. Bernie is playing the Eugene McCarthy role. Biden may be Humphrey. Is there an RFK? Trump is not only the only "cool" candidate in the republican field, he's NOT EVEN A REPUBLICAN. This is a feature and not a bug.
The problem with identity politics is that it treats politics as an identity. Politics is not Trump's identity. And that's ok. I don't care what he did in the past, I don't care about his family or his money or his looks or whether his TV show was a worthy member of the golden age of television a la some 23,000 word Grantland pop culture article. I. Am. Not. Invested. In. The. Person. The timing of this 'incident' is very interesting. The President gives
important speech tonight. And Iran seizes a couple of small ships. I think Iran is finally moving into the end game of destroying the legacy of their useful tool while further establishing their hegemony in the Middle East. College US history professor whined that Carter deserved all the credit for the resolution of the Iran hostage crisis, but it just happened to be timed so that it looked bad for him. Completely missed that that the timing was Iran's demonstration of contempt for Carter's weakness. "Meanwhile, the bitter and corrupt corporate toady Mitch McConnell says the Senate will not offer a declaration stating that Cruz is a citizen -- something they did for fellow corporate toady John McCain."
Okay. This is the moment, Ace, when you have officially put support of your current views ahead of a fair presentation of the truth. (Oh, I mean, except for those times you lied to us, which you confessed to a while back. Most other people seem to have forgotten, or at least forgiven, that. I haven't.) McCain's natural-born citizenship resolution was introduced, considered, and passed in April 2008. Mitch McConnell had nothing to do with that resolution, except for voting for it. Which party was in charge of the Senate? Democrats. Which senator submitted that resolution? Claire McCaskill. Among its six sponsors, I see only ONE Republican name -- Tom Coburn. The others? McCaskill, Patrick Leahy, Jim Webb...and Hillary Clinton...and Barack Obama. The presentation and passing of that resolution was obviously a partisan move, meant to take the wind out of the sails of the Obama birther movement. Notice how both leading Democratic presidential contenders, including the man who (at that point) was leading the delegate count and whose own birth was in question, very conspicuously made sure to support the idea that McCain was an American citizen by birth. That way, if McCain decided to ally with the birthers later, they'd have a great line. "Barack Obama thinks John McCain is an American. We just wish Senator McCain thought the same thing about Senator Obama." Boom, implied racism -- McCain obviously thinks Obama is not a real American because Obama is black. So why doesn't Mitch McConnell want to pass a resolution stating that Ted Cruz is an American citizen, just like Harry Reid and Claire McCaskill did for John McCain? Maybe because McConnell doesn't think it's in any doubt, and doesn't want to waste Senate time on a meaningless symbolic gesture? Cruz is obviously an American citizen. Anyone who thinks differently is a moron, not worth the trouble of reasoning with. And McConnell has refused to do things before on the grounds that he thought they were a waste of time. This alternative explanation is at least a possibility. But no, you immediately leap to whatever conclusion supports your bias. McConnell won't follow in Harry Reid's footsteps because...corporate toadyism. Yes, it's so obvious, so simple. And in the process, you have now insulted Mitch McConnell for not running the Senate like HARRY F'N REID. Ouroboros wept. Posted by: Demosthenes at January 12, 2016 04:23 PM (9V0rz) 359

Are there really that many working-class white semi-conservative Democrats? What are we talking about here as a percentage? Mark Levin has reviewed this stupid Cruz manufactured crisis every night now for two or three weeks. He has cited a 1971 court case, Brown vs. ? in which the Supreme Court determined what was meant by natural born citizen in the constitution.
Cruz was born to an American citizen(his mother) who was living at the time in Canada. It wouldn't matter where he was born(there are babies born every day in Germany, in Guam, in Japan, etc. to our military servicemen and women and they are American citizens). Just like Juan McCain was born in Panama because his father was stationed there, making him not a Panamanian, but an American citizen. Cruz' duel citizenship with Canada made it much easier for him to cross the border (which I have read he used in college to go to Canada with his buddies). Some countries, such as France, would allow duel citizens of the USA and France to use the French universal insurance system for medical care in the states, and that included their immediate family(have a naturalized friend who maintained his duel citizenship with France just for that reason). 47 Cruz is great and all, but he did have dual citizenship until 2014. I have a bigger issue with that than with him being born in Canada.
************* Nothing in the Constitution or US Statutes forbids any American from being a dual citizen. Politically, it's dicey---which is why Cruz renounced his Canadian citizenship---which he got automatically at birth. What's the problem? Posted by: Saj Astar at January 12, 2016 04:32 PM (FkgZk) 395
For anyone who wasn't born at a hospital with good-record keeping located in one of the 50 state to parents who were both US citizens at the time, there's an issue. And that includes you John McCain. All these articles and punditry do is show that there is an issue that lawyers can make hay of.
Now the real question: Can any of the 50 states make this an issue by how they run their state ballots? Because this issue hasn't been litigated before doesn't mean that Democrats won't try this cycle. Would Trump not pick Cruz as his VP because of this risk? Else this is just Trump punking Cruz to take Cruz down a couple of points in Iowa. Neither of Rubio's parents were US citizens when he was born in Miami. So there's an argument that he wasn't natural born, unless you believe in Anchor Babies. Posted by: Ignoramus at January 12, 2016 04:33 PM (r1fLd) 396

I'm as disgusted as everyone else is here, with McConnell and Boehner and Failure Theater. But the answer has never been "Burn it down and salt the earth". That's defeatist. As bad as things have become, they can get one hell of a lot worse, if we allow Sanders or Clinton in to make at least 3 SCOTUS appointments. At that point, we'll be done as a nation. If you're not in support of Republicans, you're supporting Democrats. Don't like the Republicans we've had? Then nominate more conservative Republicans -- not Democrats like Trump. Even if Trump wins, he'll be the big deal-maker and he'll make compromises with congress that you won't believe, they'll be so yuuuge and classy. And when the economy tanks, as it will, Republicans will get the blame -- even though it's a Democrat doing the damage. Disastrous. Trump would serve one terrible term, running up the deficit and nominating his sister and Ivanka's cousin for SCOTUS, and then we'll have President Michelle Obama, or whatever goddamned socialist they decide to ram down our throats. And they will. Because the Democrats will always nominate the most liberal candidate that has a chance to win, and advance that ratchet ever leftward. Posted by: Pastafarian at January 12, 2016 04:24 PM (LqrRo) ||+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++|| I can't give a specific number however, in my experience, working class people tend to be blunt and not known for their political correctness. So there's a bunch of ex-union people who have been indoctrinated by their former unions that illegals are screwing them out of their jobs. I think Trump would appeal to working class voters based on that. That's how Trump won them over from the Democrats and he keeps on wooing them with his blunt talk on other issues. I keep seeing that Trump is garnering 20% of the Democrat vote. I think a large portion of them are former working class Democrat voters who think they can have a voice again. Maybe the rest are just people that also think that the Democrat party has left them behind too by supporting the SJWs. The important thing is that the Democrats aren't tailoring a message toward them anymore and Trump, inadvertently, is. Posted by: CozMark at January 12, 2016 04:46 PM (ES+x/) 407

I did it a bunch of time and it wasn't a hassle, and I don't have dual citizenship. That was in the '80's and early '90's. So I'm not sure that would be a good reason to have dual citizenship with the Canucks. I have known people who have dual Irish/American citizenship. You can get it if you have a grandparent who was born in the Republic of Ireland. A guy I know who got it wasn't even all that interested in Ireland - he wanted to teach English in France and it's much easier to do that if you are a citizen of a country in the EU. Meanwhile, the bitter and corrupt corporate toady Mitch McConnell says the Senate will not offer a declaration stating that Cruz is a citizen
I actually agree with this, since the Senate doesn't have the power to make any such declarations with any force. It isn't the Senate's job nor within its duties, though it was nice that they pretended to take the Constitution somewhat seriously on that (even if their action was outside of said Constitution and totally meaningless). -- something they did for fellow corporate toady John McCain. BTW, it was a non-binding resolution they passed for McShame, co-sponsored by Barky (though I'm sure people have already noted this above). Funny how Barky could have been one of those pushing that BS resolution but then acted so offended when anyone asked for proof that he was eligible - which he wasn't. Posted by: Jen the original at January 12, 2016 04:26 PM (O0Kvv) Dual-citizenship often makes it more difficult to cross from one country of citizenship to another on a round trip, not easier, since you are bound to both countries in special ways and have to deal with which passport you use, etc. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at January 12, 2016 04:52 PM (zc3Db) 411

Whether it was meant as a kill shot or not, Trump did Cruz a favor bringing up the grumblings out there about Cruz's citizenship.
Some dork in Florida swore that if Cruz got the nomination he was going to sue and keep suing Cruz over the citizenship thing. And being a Democrat, you know he would and he'd have the DNC money to back him. Yet Cruz was trying to ignore this going on. Hoping it would go away. All of us here know that wasn't going to happen. The media was lying in the bushes waiting for the opportunity to smack him with this at the best time (for them) and he would take a hit that might've been fatal. And Trump made no claims about whether Cruz is eligible or not, he just pointed out that Cruz was going to be taken to task over it. Now Cruz has finally responded and hopefully other stuff will also come out. Maybe even a ruling of some sort. But it will be at Cruz's timing and not the MFM or the DNC. And Trump made that happen. And Cruz isn't so savvy a politician if he thought that his citizenship wasn't going to be made a political football. Sheesh, I guess all the 'conservatives' here believe in the "Living Constitution" and they call Trump a liberal.
"And, what was once a long fought leftist battle to eliminate all Constitutional foundations for sovereign government by a sovereign nation and of its sovereign citizens, has now been joined by Republicans like Ted Cruz, Marco Rubio and Bobby Jindal, none of whom are actually eligible for the Oval Office, and all of whom know it." Thats true Max. Trump said that he was hearing things in the grape vine that Ted needed to address when it came to his citizenship. He never once claimed that he was not a citizen.
To add to that, after Trump claimed that there were people going after it, low and behold there were. Some lefty people had all of this stuff lined up on Cruz for over a year and were ready to take him to court over it at their time of choosing.
