I read somewhere that the backbone of Trump's support consists of people who identify as Republican, but are registered as Democrats.
The author of the article interpreted this to mean: Reagan Democrats. Not everyone here supporting Trump has been fooled -- most of these new commenters supporting Trump surely were commenting at Democratic Underground a few months ago. You're in on the game. Bravo, Chester, well-played.
Leftists are responding to polls by identifying as Republicans and claiming to support Trump, hoping to generate a preference cascade. They're probably actively going out and finding every poll they can. They'll register as R's in droves and push Trump to victory in every early state.
And they he'll lose to Clinton, and we'll have an unindicted felon for a president, and she'll make 3 or 4 SCOTUS appointments, and they'll be about as bad as you can imagine.
But Ted Cruz isn't a real American. Jesus Christ on horseback, I am at my wits' end.

If he didn't actively seek it out and instead it attached to him by Canadian law without any effort on his part, then it really isn't a big deal to me. Foreign governments can set up their own rules declaring who is a citizen and who isn't and short of a treaty there is very little the USA can do about it.

I think if a major party says someone is their nominee, they automatically go on the state's general election ballots. So technically, Biden could get the nomination in a 'brokered convention' if there is no winner on the first ballot without ever running a campaign in each state.

Trump's Chumps are more than likely the working class whites that the Democrats have removed from their base coalition.
The Dems want to appeal to Professionals (dcotors, lawyers, professors, bureaucrats) and aspirants to that class because that's where the $ is.
To get the votes they appeal to the various SJ segments they've been organizing into communities and indoctrinating in colleges (the aspirants to the Pro class come from the colleges). Those are the 2 main groups.
Trump's Chumps don't fall into alignment with either group so they lack a voice. The Unions kept them in the fold but The Unions aren't as powerful as they once were because the Blue State model (the three legged stool of Government Bureaucrats/Pols-Unions-Business) is collapsing and union membership is falling because Blue States have poor business environments which causes Democrats to lose elections.
My point is, there is another explanation than the one you posit which seems too conspiratorial, complex, and organized to be plausible.

Seems to me -- and I'm just saying here -- that Cruz' fidelity with America and her Constitution run deeper than with most other candidates. So excuse me while I roll my eyes at this claim so much that I'm looking at my own gray matter.

They only people that I think can make a fuss about this requirement are the actual members of the Electoral College. Or maybe the House if they refuse to certify the results.
There really isn't a mechanism in place for determining what is eligibility under the citizenship requirement, the Constitution is silent on that. Perhaps an Amendment defining the citizenship requirement would be a route to go down, or just do what we do now and let each citizen voter make that determination in the voting booth.
Sorry - not every problem has a solution.

Possibly, though I would guess the Court would not take it as a political question - which I think is right. The only real person who I could see having standing is Cruz himself should he be denied access to a ballot or denied counting of his electoral votes.

I tend to agree with you. Besides every voter can determine whether Cruz is qualified. And if you deem him unqualified because he is not a natural born person - great. You just interpreted the Constitution. We don't need the Court for everything. If a majority of the voters determine he is eligible - through their vote - that should be just as good as a Court determination.

Yes. First off the age requirements are different. 30 for a senator 35 for president. Also the citizenship requirement for the senate is only being a US citizen for 14 years.

McCain's natural-born citizenship resolution was introduced, considered, and passed in April 2008. Mitch McConnell had nothing to do with that resolution, except for voting for it. Which party was in charge of the Senate? Democrats. Which senator submitted that resolution? Claire McCaskill. Among its six sponsors, I see only ONE Republican name -- Tom Coburn. The others? McCaskill, Patrick Leahy, Jim Webb...and Hillary Clinton...and Barack Obama.
The presentation and passing of that resolution was obviously a partisan move, meant to take the wind out of the sails of the Obama birther movement. Notice how both leading Democratic presidential contenders, including the man who (at that point) was leading the delegate count and whose own birth was in question, very conspicuously made sure to support the idea that McCain was an American citizen by birth. That way, if McCain decided to ally with the birthers later, they'd have a great line. "Barack Obama thinks John McCain is an American. We just wish Senator McCain thought the same thing about Senator Obama." Boom, implied racism -- McCain obviously thinks Obama is not a real American because Obama is black.
So why doesn't Mitch McConnell want to pass a resolution stating that Ted Cruz is an American citizen, just like Harry Reid and Claire McCaskill did for John McCain? Maybe because McConnell doesn't think it's in any doubt, and doesn't want to waste Senate time on a meaningless symbolic gesture? Cruz is obviously an American citizen. Anyone who thinks differently is a moron, not worth the trouble of reasoning with. And McConnell has refused to do things before on the grounds that he thought they were a waste of time. This alternative explanation is at least a possibility.
But no, you immediately leap to whatever conclusion supports your bias. McConnell won't follow in Harry Reid's footsteps because...corporate toadyism. Yes, it's so obvious, so simple. And in the process, you have now insulted Mitch McConnell for not running the Senate like HARRY F'N REID.

Cruz was born to an American citizen(his mother) who was living at the time in Canada. It wouldn't matter where he was born(there are babies born every day in Germany, in Guam, in Japan, etc. to our military servicemen and women and they are American citizens). Just like Juan McCain was born in Panama because his father was stationed there, making him not a Panamanian, but an American citizen.
Cruz' duel citizenship with Canada made it much easier for him to cross the border (which I have read he used in college to go to Canada with his buddies). Some countries, such as France, would allow duel citizens of the USA and France to use the French universal insurance system for medical care in the states, and that included their immediate family(have a naturalized friend who maintained his duel citizenship with France just for that reason). So why give it up if you don't have to.

I'm as disgusted as everyone else is here, with McConnell and Boehner and Failure Theater. But the answer has never been "Burn it down and salt the earth". That's defeatist. As bad as things have become, they can get one hell of a lot worse, if we allow Sanders or Clinton in to make at least 3 SCOTUS appointments. At that point, we'll be done as a nation.
If you're not in support of Republicans, you're supporting Democrats. Don't like the Republicans we've had? Then nominate more conservative Republicans -- not Democrats like Trump. Even if Trump wins, he'll be the big deal-maker and he'll make compromises with congress that you won't believe, they'll be so yuuuge and classy.
And when the economy tanks, as it will, Republicans will get the blame -- even though it's a Democrat doing the damage. Disastrous. Trump would serve one terrible term, running up the deficit and nominating his sister and Ivanka's cousin for SCOTUS, and then we'll have President Michelle Obama, or whatever goddamned socialist they decide to ram down our throats.

My guess would be, if Trump really wants his (conservative?) changes cemented-
he'll bail at the exact point where Cruz can finish out his term and still have two more terms of his own.

I can't give a specific number however, in my experience, working class people tend to be blunt and not known for their political correctness. So there's a bunch of ex-union people who have been indoctrinated by their former unions that illegals are screwing them out of their jobs. I think Trump would appeal to working class voters based on that. That's how Trump won them over from the Democrats and he keeps on wooing them with his blunt talk on other issues.
I keep seeing that Trump is garnering 20% of the Democrat vote. I think a large portion of them are former working class Democrat voters who think they can have a voice again. Maybe the rest are just people that also think that the Democrat party has left them behind too by supporting the SJWs. The important thing is that the Democrats aren't tailoring a message toward them anymore and Trump, inadvertently, is.

It used to be very, very easy in pre-9/11 days to cross the northern border. I did it a bunch of time and it wasn't a hassle, and I don't have dual citizenship. That was in the '80's and early '90's.
So I'm not sure that would be a good reason to have dual citizenship with the Canucks. I have known people who have dual Irish/American citizenship. You can get it if you have a grandparent who was born in the Republic of Ireland. A guy I know who got it wasn't even all that interested in Ireland - he wanted to teach English in France and it's much easier to do that if you are a citizen of a country in the EU.

I actually agree with this, since the Senate doesn't have the power to make any such declarations with any force. It isn't the Senate's job nor within its duties, though it was nice that they pretended to take the Constitution somewhat seriously on that (even if their action was outside of said Constitution and totally meaningless).

Dual-citizenship often makes it more difficult to cross from one country of citizenship to another on a round trip, not easier, since you are bound to both countries in special ways and have to deal with which passport you use, etc.

I'm not sure I would rely on the Constitutional expertise of a guy that couldn't see the Florida Supreme Court had stomped all over the document.

Some dork in Florida swore that if Cruz got the nomination he was going to sue and keep suing Cruz over the citizenship thing.
And being a Democrat, you know he would and he'd have the DNC money to back him.
Yet Cruz was trying to ignore this going on. Hoping it would go away. All of us here know that wasn't going to happen.
The media was lying in the bushes waiting for the opportunity to smack him with this at the best time (for them) and he would take a hit that might've been fatal.
And Trump made no claims about whether Cruz is eligible or not, he just pointed out that Cruz was going to be taken to task over it.
Now Cruz has finally responded and hopefully other stuff will also come out. Maybe even a ruling of some sort. But it will be at Cruz's timing and not the MFM or the DNC.
And Trump made that happen. And Cruz isn't so savvy a politician if he thought that his citizenship wasn't going to be made a political football.

To add to that, after Trump claimed that there were people going after it, low and behold there were. Some lefty people had all of this stuff lined up on Cruz for over a year and were ready to take him to court over it at their time of choosing.
I see nothing but cordial talk among competing candidates for the same job. It's almost gentlemanly if you think about it.

Yes, a state would have standing. Most of you don't know this but the Dems have been trying HARD to get Art. 2 amended - for 35 years now. They want for anyone, regardless of birth country, to be eligible to run for POTUS. SO, I do not think you will see general pushback from the Dems re: Cruz. This is perfect for them to further their goal towards removing the restriction on eligibility in Art. 2. Plays right into their hands. Congressional records, 1970 forward - google is your friend. Pack a lunch, you'll have a lot of reading to do.

Grump... the comment above references a Breitbart article that had a very misleading headline in which a debate teammate of Cruz's said nothing close to "Cruz said he had dual citizenship". In fact the teammate said, while Cruz had commented on the that he had been born in Canada, he always referred to himself as only an American.
