Years ago a woman was helping to plan her daughter's wedding. She met with the owner of a flower shop and selected beautiful ornate centerpieces for each of the tables at the reception. In order to cut costs and maximize his profit the flower shop owner subcontracted with a shady supplier for metal trays on which to set the centerpieces.
Of course, when the big day came, the low-bid trays were not strong enough and crumpled as they were being carried into the banquet hall. This caused all of the floral arrangements to fall to the ground and the big day was ruined. Seeking compensation, the lady consulted with her lawyer who counseled her... ..."You can't sue the florist for the trays." Posted by: Seamus Muldoon at January 12, 2016 09:17 AM (NeFrd) 31

That painting isn't at all realistic. When I look out my window, deep in the heart of the northern forests, I see snow. And Wind. Blowing snow makes for bad roads. And Cold. Temp ten degrees and falling. Too cold for salt, yet The State keeps pouring salt on the road in the hope that one day the temperatures will rise enough the salt will melt the ice made by the snow plow as it tries to scrape up the teeny tiny snowflakes.
So I look at these orange trees and wonder what it is that would make those trees orange? A distant nuclear explosion over the horizon? A house fire, perhaps started by a chimney fire, or candle? Maybe an oil well, or gas well fire. Or a false color image from a light amplification device? It is a mystery to me because when I look outside I see white, grey gloomy sky, dark trees. Even the evergreen are so dark they are almost black. The guy who painted that picture isn't from around here, that's for certain. >>Many end climactically with the cop having to talk to the armed suspect
who usually has their kidnap victim at gunpoint, or about to throw them off a bridge, or burn them alive. Yup. The recent Luther special episode had this truly psycho killer who was just randomly, gruesomely offing people in all sorts of imaginative, non-gun related ways. Ended with confrontation and the talking. Why would you expect to talk a psychopath out of a killing spree - logic and reason have already left the building, mate! But this is what Hollywood wants so bad - a world in which the killers and criminals have the advantage because they are better-armed (with whatever weapon they use) and have the will to use them. Meanwhile, the good guys act tough and....talk. Posted by: Lizzy at January 12, 2016 09:56 AM (NOIQH) 101

(Today is the 388th anniversary of the birth in Paris of French author Charles Perrault (1628-1703), who created the literary foundations of the fairy tale in his 1697 collection Tales and Stories of the Past with Morals, sub-titled Tales of Mother Goose (Les Contes de ma Mère L'Oye) - which included Le Petit Chaperon rouge (Little Red Riding Hood), Cendrillon (Cinderella), Le Chat Botté (Puss in Boots), Le Barbe bleu (Bluebeard), and La Belle au Bois Dormand (The Sleeping Beauty).* Born to a wealthy family, Perrault was given a good education and embarked on a career of government service, eventually under Jacques Colbert, finance minister to Louis XIV. Subsequently, after losing his government posts, he turned to writing, at first on architecture, painting, and stage works, but later epic poetry. He wrote his Mother Goose collection for his own children, likely basing many of his tales on existing folk stories. His collation was translated into English by Robert Sambert in 1727 and is now familiar all over the world.

I would never buy baseballs to use, and it does seem a little wasteful, but I've kept a bunch of balls from games I've seen, for no particular reason, now I have something to do with them rather than watch them gather dust. Come February, I will have a nearly bottomless pit of free baseballs from Wake Forest games. We watch from outside the stadium, right field side, get a half dozen balls hit to us every game, counting fouls and homers. One guy keeps a 5-gallon bucket to put them in, and then at the end of the season gives away a prize to whoever guesses the total. Aluminum bats and mediocre pitching = a lot of long flies.

Posted by: redbanzai at January 12, 2016 10:55 AM (NPofj) --------------------------------------------------------- Since the states end up voting after the fact on all amendments, and three quarters of the states have to approve of each amendment, I think we are safe from libtard mischief. So I don't worry at all about your point (A). As far as (B) goes I don't get the concern. Recently Jim Geraghty tried to make a similar argument, saying citizens are ignorant of the constitution so why change it, and that's nonsense. Geraghty argues more (or all?) citizens be required to be constitutionally literate before we try to fix abuses and, of course, that is ridiculous. As far as your own point goes, I think amending the constitution in order to give citizens more ability to fight back against abusive government obviously is a good thing. So what if the bad guys will keep trying to abuse us? We just keep fighting them, and strengthening our hand constitutionally can only be a good thing. "When I was a kid we could not afford to buy baseballs every few days or even weeks. So when the cover started coming off due to broken threads we would sew them back up with fishing line which held up better."
Our s.o.p. was to wrap them up in black friction tape. They sucked but it was better than not playing. We also solved bat cracks at the handle of the bat by using thin nails to fortify them. This also sucked because sometimes the nails bent, and once cracked, the bats were never really the same. Once my mom drove me to the large discount store (Almart) where I bought three baseballs for $1.00. I thought I had hit the lottery, only to learn that they split apart after being hit around for about 15 minutes. They had some sort of compressed cellophane filling. "Yes, I live in Illinois and there are always enough idiots to agree to changes to 'close loopholes' and make it open season.
Illinois SC said that pensions are written in Ill Constitution -- even in bankruptcy." Well the state can't go "bankrupt" apparently, they seem to think they own us all. The way to beat the unions claim on their golden (illegally unfunded) pensions, is to show the quid pro quo between the pensioners/union bosses/Democrat politicians. Vast sums are paid to the Democrats with the agreement that public union workers would get special treatment. Can't fire them for incompetence, must pay them for spurious/worthless extended degree credits, they get to retire early on pensions sometimes higher than their salary, etc. This came up a decade or more ago, the illegal non-funding, and the Democrat response was to continue not funding enough (that would have bust the budget and killed their reelection chances) ... so they reinforced that even unfunded liabilities would be paid by future taxpayers. ie., We will screw you now AND we will screw the children later. These people should be in prison with Blago. But they still go on strike to harm the children they claim to love (Chicago 2012, bad system highest paid in country, had ObamaRahma over the barrel), while they hold a monopoly on "education". These are obvious Racketeer Influenced Corrupt Organizations, that buy off our political process. So yes, all public teachers and their union thugs and the politicians they bought must go to jail, go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200,000. /sarconthatlastpart Posted by: Illiniwek at January 12, 2016 11:35 AM (5Gpe2) 273

Years ago a blogger was planning a chain of coffee shops. A design feature was a special area to contain customers who committed certain offenses to established decorum. This area required flooring that could withstand significant abuse, and he met one afternoon with the vendor to select flooring that was physically and chemically robust, and that incorporated appropriate elements of branding.
In order to cut costs and maximize profit, the flooring vendor subcontracted with a shady supplier. Of course, when the big day came, the branding elements incorporated in The Barrel's flooring were incorrect, specifically a low-ranking playing card, rather than the high-ranking one specified. This caused significant consternation amongst the patrons, even more so than the triple thread comment confusion observed on night of Alabama's 2015 football season triumph. Seeking compensation, the blogger consulted with his lawyer who counseled him... ..."You can't sue the floorist for the treys." The cyclists were secure in their belief that the law was on their side, that they had rights, and if one of those 42 wheelers should happen to crush the herd of cyclists, it would be the truck driver's fault. By comparison, when Bush the Middle came to town, the secret service shut down the cartage company because they did not want those trucks on the highway with the president's limo. Who is advising Trump? The move to make immigration the top issue of the race could not have come from DT who does not give a damn where his cheap labor comes from. Yeah, the Brit police shows are likely inflating the effectiveness of talking a criminal out of his crime in progress. However, watching Luther was very instructive in how poorly prepared a disarmed police officer/detective is against a criminal. The show I mentioned, "Luther", has a main character whose flaws include a temper/going overboard in beating down suspects. Luther would not be in that position in a lot of cases if he just had a gun - pointing it and telling a criminal to stand still while he arrests/handcuffs them would eliminate the suspects attitude of, "Hey, he's unarmed and I have this knife/pipe/baseball bat, so yeah, I'm not going to cooperate with your arresting me, buddy." Trump advises Trump ... but he must have helpers.
O'Reilly is a long time friend, and their FOX chats have helped convince me Trump would be OK. Trump's kids are another positive indicator. Trump got the advance copy of Coulter's book and used it fully to his advantage. So she was his best "adviser" so far I suppose. Yeah, he has a company or three go through bankruptcy, but I don't know details. It is really not like an individual just skipping out on debt. Bonds or loans to companies are made with full knowledge of risk, and interest rates are set accordingly. Some businesses fail and then they get bankruptcy protection to work either a way out, or a fair way to divide the remainder, considering which debt is senior and so on. Anyway ... to say Trump is just a moron that got given all his money is foolish, but is the attack many so called conservatives like to employ. Trump is not up to speed on every aspect of politics, but the other candidates have less experience in how things really work. The real nitty gritty of policy comes from the wonks, and Trump knows how to use "his people". What Trump excels at is rallying America against the DC Cartel, and hopefully against the globalists. "America First" is not some sort of xenophobia ... it is only logical. The white guilt crap has to end. I'd like to hear Trump preach a little from the founders ideals ... we shall see. Maybe not so much. If you keep up on real news, and have a problem-solving brain, you can create a lot of your policy positions, which is what Trump seems to do, which is why on some issues that come up he can be "thin" exactly because he doesn't have a team of consultants creating silly focus-grouped policy papers that will never be implemented. this is part of the problem with long term non enforcement ... to compete one has to accept the standard of using illegals, or become non-competitive. Building trades and hotels, some horticultural things ... illegal labor is the norm and the only way to compete. In a sense the same problem with so called "free trade" where we buy from markets where workers are treated like slaves. So a big move to establish/grow the wine industry in Illinois mostly fails since two buck chuck made by illegals, and wine from Chile ... is impossible to compete with. We can have "full employment" here, but not if we have to employ the whole world first, in hopes that they will one day buy from US. Posted by: Illiniwek at January 12, 2016 01:27 PM (5Gpe2) 623

I am trying and failing here, apparently. One more go : Trump is responsible to his investors to turn a profit. Labor is the number one highest expense on most projects. Getting the lowest price on labor is a smart and profitable move on his part. Having no experience in that area I would expect that getting a solid supply of cheap labor involves battles with unions and other such obstacles that makes willing, legal inexpensive workers very appealing . Communism is evil. Not sure how else to say this. Posted by: Mortimer at January 12, 2016 01:32 PM (7wqb3) 636

I agree. In this political climate, after 7+ years of watching things slide off the cliff, it's not hard to figure out what has the electorate so dayum pissed off at DC. Especially after we got back the Senate only to watch them give Bobo everything he wants with a cherry on top. First and foremost, illegal immigrants are felons that make this country unsafe and unstable, plus they do the most damage at the local level by sucking up services to which they are not entitled. They are freeloading invaders--yeah, even, if they work 60 hours a week, they are freeloaders, because their money flies out of America to family in Mexico and we pay for their education, foodstamps, and health care. Such a deal for us.... Now, add in their crime rate and we are really talking a big problem--rape, drunk driving, murder, vehicular homicide, fraud, etc., etc. Then we get to our invited freeloaders--Syrian refugees. Yeah, that's a good idea, invite a bunch of young healthy men who despise us and our culture here to live. WTF could possibly go wrong? Are you kidding me? Everything can and will go wrong with this, but, shut up, hater, diversity. Posted by: Sherry McEvil, Stiletto Corsettes now franchising Lulu Snackbars at January 12, 2016 01:32 PM (kXoT0) 638

Political campaigns are shows, they are spectacles. They go long on emotion and very, very short on policy details. The mode of the electorate, the personality of the candidate - those are the things that a political campaign has to take into account. Lectures on The Proper Role of the Judiciary or on Constitutionalist Principles - Can Those Be Revived in the 21st Century are not going to be part of any political campaign for those would bore George Will to tears.

Posted by: Mortimer at January 12, 2016 01:32 PM (7wqb3) The whole point of critical theory is to attack the weak point, or paradox, of a competing system (western capitalism) until that attack is subconscious, memetic, and can be applied independently by others, even to totally different situation. As some moron was saying in a thread yesterday, we got bufu'd as a country by our deep-seated need to buy cheap. They exploited that instinct to open up pandora's communist box. Labor was the way they did it. It was always going to be the way they did it. It's not communist to be concerned with a rebalancing of the labor pool and the costs of different labor demographics here in this country. However, Mort, if the paradox of Trump using illegal labor in his hotels and building projects makes him, the progenitor of border security as a campaign issue, untouchable, then I don't want to hear anything about the founding fathers. Because George Washington owned slaves. Figure out a way to live, thrive, and survive in the dissonance. Posted by: Ghost of kari at January 12, 2016 01:42 PM (xuouz) 682

@637 To add to it.
Illegals will never make a net financial positive contribution to the US Welfare State. In fact, they are a current net drain, and will always be. Nearly all of their children will be too, the occasional valedictorian excepted. What they do is create an increasing need for the Welfare State, which means more teachers, social workers, health care workers, and prison guards. If you make less than $xxx per year that's the way the math works, especially if you have children. Now it's one thing to offer this to our current citizens, quite another to import the demand, especially when the math doesn't pencil out long-term for the citizens we're already trying to help. Once again, minorities and women will be hardest hit. Posted by: Ignoramus at January 12, 2016 01:45 PM (r1fLd) 692

Richard Harris was Irish, not a Brit, and fiercely proud of it. There are a lot of great RH stories. Here's one: Walking out from his London flat to get a pack of cigs, upon perusing the newspaper, he saw that Limerick Rugby, his local team from back home had a home match later that day at the infamous Thomond Park rugby pitch. In a day before cell phones, he said nothing to the wife, but flew over immediately which led to a three-day bender. Upon returning to his London flat, he said to the wife: "Didn't you pay the ransom?" Posted by: Ignoramus at January 12, 2016 01:55 PM (r1fLd) 721

_____________________ How stupid does somebody have to be to give up their vacation time to a woman whose son ended up dead because (1) she was a lousy mother who didn't bother to teach her kid right from wrong; and (2) she was a lousy mother who threw her teenage son out of her house because she didn't want to be bothered dealing with the thuggish mess he'd become because of her negligent parenting -- all so that said lousy and neglectful mother can then take her phony "poor, poor, pitiful me" show out on the road and con some more money out of other stupid and ill-informed dopes, all to further fatten her own bank account? I understand that the rump ranger nominee for
Secretary of the Army has withdrawn his nomination today. That's a small victory to most, but meaningful to some of us. Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at January 12, 2016 01:51 PM (5f5bM) Looked into it. The butt pirate has stepped down as acting Secretary, not withdrawn his nomination. Of all people, John McCain (R-Arizona) was holding the nomination up as long as he continued to serve as acting Secretary. But Pat Roberts (R-Kansas) now has a hold on the nomination, supposedly because of Administration policy on Club Gitmo. If the D's were in charge of the Senate, it would be mighty fabulous there in the Army. I have to believe there are other rearguard actions going on by the R's that we don't hear much about because they don't get through the media filter. That would be nice, but, Sharpton figured out the long con decades ago. He hides behind being a Reverend and makes a point to not "own" anything. Now that he has dieted himself down to skin and bones with a face that looks to be composed of sagging unbalanced parentheses symbols, he can easily make himself look victimized.
_________________ His gaunt appearance is not so much the result of dieting but of the stomach-reducing obesity surgery he had years ago, and the medical complications that followed. Posted by: TrivialPursuer at January 12, 2016 02:00 PM (a31sM) 725
