Now, seller is supposed to check if buyer has a valid PAL for the class of firearm in question, but I don't know how a gun's history could be traced, lacking registration paper trail. Handguns have been in a registry since 1934, so I presume there would have to be change-of-registry documents filed. Never bught one, so don't know. So he admits that there are people that are intent on committing a crime that will pass a background check, but then he says he believes we can have a system that makes it tougher for somebody to "load up their car with guns and sell them to 13 year olds."
Exactly how though? Unless you create a system that flags people that buy more than one firearm during a certain period, and even then, how could you be confident they're not going to sell them. There are already laws in certain states that limit the number of guns you can buy over the course of a month or so. Posted by: Mainah at January 07, 2016 11:11 PM (nHT9Z) 60

She was wrong about the all-time low murder rate, but it has been a very long time since it's been this low. Well, the pardons won't be pleasant to contemplate. But keep in mind that he's basically lazy about everything but moving his jaw. Pelosi and Reid did Obamacare. This big anti-2nd-Amendment splash has very lightweight underpinnings and he went with it anyway. How does a seller know if the buyer has a valid PAL?
Posted by: Ricardo Kill at January 07, 2016 11:11 PM (kqYv4) Strictly guessing on my part, but I guess they demand to see it. You look at gun-broker type sites in Canada, you will see terms like "Pal required" or "restricted PAL required". I suppose there is a number you can call or a Web site where you can enter the number of a PAL to verify it has not been revoked. But that is speculation on my part. And I suspect that language occurs in on-line and in-print ads as an ass-covering measure on the part of sellers. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 07, 2016 11:21 PM (cKwwS) 109

There is nothing he could say or do (short of suicide on live TV) that I might want to watch -- and I'm not a fan of suicide. He is a despicable, petty, evil man and the best part of his contemptible, corrupt, and vicious life would be saving the country from sharing another second of it. I'm reminded of the old joke where a superstitious Hitler ordered a Jewish fortuneteller to be brought to him alive. "What day shall I die?", asks the Fuehrer. "You will die on a Jewish Holiday" replies the soothsayer. Increasingly frantic, Hitler demands: "What does that mean? Yom Kippur? Rosh Hashanah? -- which Jewish Holiday?" To which the sage replies, "whatever day you die shall be a Jewish Holiday." For the American people, any day we are rid of the Obamanation shall be a good one. Posted by: ThunderB at January 07, 2016 11:30 PM (zOTsN) Here is another way - per capita is a very crude metric. With, say, automobiles relative safety is not considered on a per capita basis, it is looked at with regard to how many automobiles are out there vs. accidents, or registered (out in the public) automobiles vs. accidents. The question is "How safe are autos" right? When it gets down into the weeds, how safe are autos, well, how much are they used? A reasonable auto safety metric is accidents (fatalities) per hundred million passenger miles.A fair measure of firearm safety/risk would be in accidents/fatalities per registered firearm or fired round (maybe hundreds of millions of rounds). Did you know the actress who played Mrs Wormer played Mary, the Mother of Jesus, is The Last Temptation of Christ? Well! Thank you, iMDB.
Yes, and Dean Wormer was John Vernon, who was the cold eyed bad guy in a million westerns. The music was by Elmer Bernstein, who did The Great Escape and such back in the day. One of the things that's brilliant about that movie is the degree to which they play it straight. If you put in wacky music, if you have Jim Carey as the vicious dean, you don't get the same effect. The flight across the Atlantic to Brussels is about seven hours. The flight from Brussels to Entebbe Airport is even longer. Wasn't Benyamin Netanyahu's brother involved in the raid on Entebbe? Posted by: Northernlurker, feeling grumpy today at January 07, 2016 11:57 PM (4rzL1) Jonathon Netanyahu was the only Israeli fatality at Entebbe and was a hero by any reasonable definition. One reason that Bibi is such a mensch is that he's always trying to live up to his brother's example. XP is pretty ancient. In your position, I'd either uninstall/reinstall Firefox, or install Chrome. Actually, I'd do the latter. Firefox is dead to me because of what Mozilla did to Eich, and you might actually have a better chance of keeping your bookmarks if you install a new browser and let it migrate them, rather than uninstall and possibly lose them. Another choice would be a manual install of Firefox without uninstalling, but you might want to check around to see if you should install an old version, because you have XP. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at January 08, 2016 12:10 AM I don't think Firefox has dropped XP, according to an article from the last 24 hours or so. It may be an update, as Firefox tried something while FB was open last session. Norton flagged it, though and said it was stinky, so I don't think that went through. Malwarebytes showed 2 firefox things that weren't malware but were *something* and apparently quarantined them. So, I dunno. A restart after first failing didn't help. Posted by: otho at January 08, 2016 12:26 AM (EWg9n) Don't sell yourself short, otho. If you can run the Web browser to get here, you can download and install Linux Mint. I read a few reviews, and decided Mint was among the top three easiest Linux versions for an old Windows user to install and use. 1. Use a search engine to find a Linux Mint download site. 2. Download the .iso file that you are prompted to do. 3. Use your DVD burner to burn that file to a DVD. (You can also put it on a sufficiently big thumb drive). 4. With the DVD in the drive, reboot your computer, and press whatever function key the BIOS tells you to select boot order. F11, in my case. Tell it to boot from DVD. Computer will boot up in Linux Mint #whatever. Play with it; it will be fully functional from the DVD. 5. Somewhere, you will find an "install" menu. You choose to partition the HD and install Mint in a new partition, leaving XP in the old one, available to use. Or choose to have it format the hard drive erasing ALL programs and data, and do a clean install of Mint in an unpartitioned drive. In this machine, I did the latter, because it was a used machine, bought from a friend, and I had no stake in any of the data left on it, and preferred to see it all go bye-bye. In your case, I would choose the partition option. 6. When I did this install last year it was the easiest OS install I had ever done, bar none. If the question about why fully automatic weapons cost so much was halfway serious, the answer is a 1986 law that effectively banned the sale of fully automatic weapons made after the law was passed (some question about the sneaky way it was passed).
This seriously limited supply. A legal weapon as to be manufactured before that date and all sorts of tortured legalisms on stuff like if you modify one in a certain way, it is now a new gun and all that. I think it's the lower receiver that counts as the "weapon". For example, and AR-15/M-16 lower that was registered before 1986 and thus legal for sale as a "machine gun" will costs $10s of thousands. The fees and paperwork are a pittance by comparison. Posted by: publius (not Breitbart publius) at January 08, 2016 12:53 AM (dvuhZ) 411

Posted by: otho at January 08, 2016 12:44 AM (EWg9n) Yes. It is. And it is free, and updates are free, as is most software for it. This one has LibreOffice packed with it, which can open and manipulate most MS Office files. Also video and audio players/editors, image viewers/editors, browsers, you name it. All the functionality you'd expect from a decent Windows install, accessible from a Graphical User Interface that works pretty much like the familair Windows GUI, even if it has a different face. Double-click an icon to run a program. Think of it as trading in your Oldsmobile on a Ford. The dash and controls look different, but they mostly are all there, and within a day or two, you are comfortable with them. Under the hood, Linux and Windows are quite different, especially as to how they handle files and drives. But you and I will rarely if ever have to get under the hood. If you do, there is help out there. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 08, 2016 12:55 AM (cKwwS) 416

On iPad ATM, but I *think* I'm on OM v26 (?). Rcently upgraded the PC, had to wipe and re-install everything, and now no Ghostery. AdBlock/NoScript run fine. Well, if you need that particular version of PM then you're stuck. If you can upgrade PM then ghostery should work after the upgrade. Otho: LINUX is an operating system, a free open source version of UNIX.
The Macintosh uses a commercially licensed version of Mach UNIX. The advantage of going to LINUX is that it is free, and has a community behind it providing security updates and bux fixes for free. Windows XP is no longer supported, and is full of security holes. Windows 10 is supported, but cost money, and is still full of security holes. The install for both Mint and Ubuntu LINUX is fairly easy. Just download a disk image, burn it to a DVD, put it in the PC you want to load it on, and boot it up. Loading Pale Moon on it afterwards is a bit tougher, but you can just use the in OS application tool to load up Chrome or FF without any hassle. Thank you so much for writing that to me, Mainah. The problem is that I'm fast not believing any of it anymore. My life looks and reads like Job. Ever since I brought prolife work into my life, I have been besieged with demons. And I'm tiring of it and getting ready to quit and do something easier.
Posted by: L, Elle at January 08, 2016 12:54 AM (2x3L+) I've felt like Job, too. I don't remember where I heard it or read it, but I've always kind of liked the saying that goes something like "why would the devil bother tempting somebody who is weak in their faith. It's a bigger deal to get the strong believer to stray." I didn't quote it exactly, but that's the jist. Believe me, I didn't grow up religious, and I ended up marrying the daughter of a southern baptist preacher. I still don't feel like I stack up with her family in terms of the understanding of God's ways, but that saying has given me some strength, that if I feel like I'm being tested in some way, it must be because I'm doing/trying to do the right thing. Skimming the long list of posts above, I think someone was wondering how many NFA firearms, at "least machine guns" as they are stupidly defined by that law, have been used in a crime.
The answer, last I read, was exactly one. And that was one in the hands of a LEO (some deputy sheriff or some shit like that). He used his NFA "machine gun" to shoot some dude he caught in bed with his wife or something like that. So the only one who ever used a legal "machine gun" to shoot somebody was a damn LEO, who are already okay to have automatic weapons in their LEO capacity. The dude just had the NFA thing to allow private personal ownership. Now, whether that "one crime" includes all NFA items like short barreled rifles, shotguns, and "destructive devices", I don't know. You got lucky. The bad block is apparently on the part of the HD that stores your copy of Fire Fox. If it was on your OS itself, you would have been screwed.
If you can't deal with a reload and reformat solo, then just rename your Fire Fox folder to "broken", or some such. That will let it sit on the bad block without having anything else dumped there. Then load up a new copy of Fire Fox, or whatever browser you want. Posted by: Kristophr at January 08, 2016 01:34 AM (jLXo8) 505

What exactly do you mean by "emulators"? I'm thinking of building a brand-new box devoted to hosting virtual machines, but I'm still brainstorming about it. Posted by: cthulhu at January 08, 2016 01:12 AM (EzgxV) I was thinking of wine or something similar. Still have plenty of Windows only scientific programs, including some that are 16-bit... Posted by: The ShelX Hat at January 08, 2016 01:25 AM (vBeA5) Wine maps windows system calls to Linux system calls. If your application is insecure in Windows, it will render your Linux system insecure. You might also sandbox programs -- sandboxie and firejail are well-thought-of -- they map windows system calls to Linux system calls, but to a remapped Linux environment so that it doesn't contaminate your "live" system. And then there's running outright virtual machines, where any malware intrusions go "poof" when the imaginary computer they're running on gets reset. If you have the source code for your applications, there's also the option to recompile on your current system -- 'cause, with Linux, if you can't find a compiler for a language, it doesn't exist. Just download a disk image, burn it to a DVD, put it in the PC you want to load it on, and boot it up.Loading Pale Moon on it afterwards is a bit tougher, but you can just use the in OS application tool to load up Chrome or FF without any hassle.

Easy to take anywhere you want. Easy to duplicate. Easy to have alternate system builds. Easy to back-up. Easy to restore. And the main system is on a write-protected (inherently write protected) squash file so I never have to worry about corrupting any of it. Once I started with this sort of set-up (I initially starting using it because I had some old laptops without working HDs that I wanted to use) I never left it. ANd now USB memory is so friggin cheap ... I would never think of going back to installed OSes. I am actually totally unparanoid about my computer setup. Stop wading and diving into the minutia and give thanks for God's little moments. Don't start downloading Katie Perry videos with the sick kids and dissolve into tears. This is only a temporary "reset", as I've found. Yeah, I cried my ASS off, wanna stop-by and make something of it? Drop to your knees and... Thank God for all you have. Take one moment out of your day and feel blessed. Acknowledge all you've made for yourselves and Praise The Lord for it. It takes a World of weight off your shoulders and hands you an attitude that can carry you for days, weeks, months, years. Don't worry about getting distraught or pissy. That means that you're Human. We find, within ourselves another wind, another day, another fight through God. That is how we stand. Not through anger, nor witty bile, but through thanks. Our pain is nothing compared to His. I don't thank Him daily, but I try. The days and moments I don't, I am apt to be a thief of someone else's joy and dignity. I am not here to lecture. I can only present my own testimony before the eyes of God. ...Might you find Love, Peace and Dignity through Him. Posted by: Slapweasel (Cold1), (T) at January 08, 2016 01:52 AM (OQ9R7) 540

L Elle,
This will sound like cold comfort to you and Ia apologize for this, but it's true nevertheless. When you're doing good works ordained by God people are often spiritually attacked. I don't know if you are Catholic (I thought that you said you were) but this is a common theme in the lives of the saints and of Protestant evangelists such as John Wesley. Saint Faustina-has an entire journal where she's trying to get a devotional set up called Divine mercy and she's relentlessly attacked by the devil and by people who don't like her work and attack her She sometimes feels a darkness and feels God has abound her Fr, John Vianney had the same thing happen to him-not about the darkness of feeling abandoned by God but attacked by the devil. If I may make a suggestion-God get some spiritual direction from your priest if you are RC. He should also be able to recommend a person who does this regularly. Saint faustian had a spiritual director The other thing is to take some time off, get rest and slip. I apologize if this sounds officious. And I believe Service Pack II is still available for download at MS site; "non-support" simply means they have ceased to do do any new work on XP. SPII patches most of the holes you worry about. And maybe otho doesn't use his XP computer for anything but casual browsing, in which case he can format and reload as necessary if he catches a nasty. Trying to salvage the existing HD is a mistake IMHO, because whatever caused one block to go bad will inevitably spread. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 08, 2016 02:02 AM (cKwwS) 563

Posted by: chemjeff at January 08, 2016 01:47 AM (uZNvH) The funny thing is that I was a total UNIX geek 1980-1983. and even owned an ATT UnixPC at one point thereafter. But, y'know, Win3.1, Win95, Win98, WinXP, Win7....and now Linux Mint is at least as easy as WinXP to install. Posted by: cthulhu at January 08, 2016 02:02 AM (EzgxV) 564

Is it even possible to do a clean install of XP anymore? It's been a while since I tried but I seem to remember Windows Update no longer working with it, even after searching out the service pack downloads and installing them outside update it didn't work, so you won't even get the last security updates.

A dark night of the soul is quite a possibility. You don't have to be a Saint to have them, "Normal " Christian people have them There is a book on this by a Christian man who was a psychotherapist. called something like "Dark Night of The soull where he talk about this in the lives of regularl people in connection to St John of the Cross And of course you don't think you're like them because they were declared Saints. St Thomas Aquinas says we're (he was speaking of practicing RC people) are all on the road to becoming saints in the spiritual life. It's a little different for Protestants who don't have people declared saints and Paul speaks of Saints as the followers of Christ. Ask several saints if you have any favorites to intercede for you. St Faustina might be a good one. She could certainly understand. And yes, nuns have retreats too. Maybe you need that or just some time away. i got to retreats-on my own with a spiritual director and I'm not RC. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at January 08, 2016 02:12 AM (M+RRn) 578

I type that in somewhere? Sorry, I'm pretty dumb at this.
Posted by: otho at January 08, 2016 01:59 AM (EWg9n) No typing, which is why I left out the backslashes. Just open Windows Explorer. You will see a "tree" in the left panel that represents the possible storage areas in your machine. "C" is the default letter for the primary hard drive. Double click on that, and an expanded view of C with its major directories will appear in the right panel. Click on any major directory, and you will see the subdirectories. Click on a sub, and you will get further subs, and some individual files. Explorer will tell you something about the nature of the file, its size, and last accessed date, etc. File suffixes usually are clues to their type of use. *.exe is an executable file, and the main Firefox program might be ff.exe or firefox.exe. But there are a host of "helper" files like .dll (dynamic link library) that Windows uses to run the program. And then you have the Windows Registry, When you install programs, you place "keys" into the Windows Registry, which you cannot access from Explorer. You need to open a command prompt (the "Run" command in the main menu), and type "Regedit.exe" and hit enter. That opens the Registry editor. But beware!! Here there be dragons. Alter the wrong entry, and the entire machine will crash. The only time I mess with the registry editor is by explicitly following clear written instructions from a trusted source. Trying to mend a broken program by pasting in new pieces rarely works, unless you you know which piece is broken, and how it came to be broken. It would not surprise me one bit if your bad drive has compromised the registry. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 08, 2016 02:21 AM (cKwwS) 589

Can you just take some time off from the work you do-I'm talking about the pro-life work. And if you have a few days can you go to the nunneryrand stay there-no internet access. There are time when I've been spiritual exhausted and even a couple of days away in a prayerful atmosphere has helped. Sometimes I don't even have much spiritual direction. I just bring devotional books and spend time there. the other concurrent possibility is could you need some mediation for depression. I say this because I have in the past. The work you do won't collapse because you take some time off. God is still God and we all time time to replenish from the well. Even Jesus got away from crowds of demanding people. A late night thought for those in distress, since I can't seem to sleep anyway:
_Mood_, more or less, is the balance of "how much energy you think you have" versus "how much energy you think whatever it is is going to take." But, and here's the thing, both of those quantities are subjective estimates. They have to be! Because they are unknowable, unmeasurable quantities. You are stronger than you know. Much, much stronger. Most of us fight ourselves, fooling ourselves into trying to hang onto everything at once. This is why we feel weak. But the underlying strength is there, and there in abundance. Despite the turbulence. I am not sure whether I am making sense, but there it is. Posted by: Piercello at January 08, 2016 02:31 AM (RXfvh) 600

Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX ever offers to sell you a firearm, you should approach the offer with enthusiasm, except for the fact that we've already called dibs, should he ever need to sell another one. about the same time as the virus i stupidly caught, he offered up a Mossberg O/U 12 and 20 combo, NIB. when his FFL pulled the finger out and finally shipped it, it arrived here in #Failifornia as advertised: even the box was NIB. we're looking forward to breaking it's cherry shortly. good man, good deal. we'll have to get down to Texas and go shooting with him. just not in summer. After seeing that video, I think Barack Obama should sue Taya Kyle's dead husband for slander.
See, he's dead, so he can't defend himself; it results in a sure victory, and she has to cough up the money he left her. It worked for me! And it can work for Obama, too. When I was a Navy SEAL, Taya Kyle never would've dared to challenge me like she challenged Obama tonight. She especially wouldn't have dared to accuse me of falsely claiming to have been a Navy SEAL! I've never done any such thing. Posted by: Jesse Ventura at January 08, 2016 03:31 AM (0OG8D) 661

....and Ira disappears himself.
Again, the danger with Ira is because he doesn't understand the ramifications of the actions he takes. He thought it would be a gas to try to take over my email account -- despite the financial information flowing through it; he thought peeking into my Schwab account and Discover card was very ha-ha funny. He thought that dropping a keylogger on me was like putting a fart-balloon on my chair. If Ira were purely mercenary, like the Russian mafia, I'd have been in a completely different situation; if he had been purely evil, like ISIS, things would have progressed in a different manner.....but he opened the same doors that they would have because he didn't realize those doors should never be opened. Ira is dangerous because he doesn't realize that dropping keyloggers, trying to post comments on blogs 934 times in one night using proxies, bulldozing Amazon's retarded security, and trying to take over email accounts is insane and reprehensible. It causes real harm to people for no discernable gain. In short, it's the calling card of a psychopath. He may occasionally be witty and charming, but causing pain to others is merely his amusement, and he is not fit company for decent people. Posted by: cthulhu at January 08, 2016 04:51 AM (EzgxV) 711
Anyone want to handle a hypothetical?
Well here goes. Person A dislikes Person B. Person A has the ability to remove Person B without any ramifications at all. Posted by: Tim in Illinois. Old and Unimproved. at January 08, 2016 05:06 AM (WVsWD) 718
Tim: oh, okay.
and I think your premise 3 is flawed. obviously there is some type of relationship between Person A and Person B otherwise there wouldn't be any occasion for either one to want to remove the other. Is the relationship strictly professional then? Posted by: chemjeff at January 08, 2016 05:09 AM (uZNvH) Posted by: Tim in Illinois. Old and Unimproved. at January 08, 2016 05:10 AM (WVsWD) 720

Yes. Person A has the Power to not deal with Person B. Person A chooses not use that power. It would be like you removing a failing Student from the Classroom. Or not. Posted by: Tim in Illinois. Old and Unimproved. at January 08, 2016 05:12 AM (WVsWD) 721

It would be like you removing a failing Student from the Classroom. Or not.
Posted by: Tim in Illinois. Old and Unimproved. at January 08, 2016 05:12 AM (WVsWD) Okay if we use this specific example: I might not remove a failing student from the class:- if I thought there was still a chance the student might yet pass- out of respect for the student's own judgment about what he/she believes is best, even if I disagree- if I am only marginally inconvenienced if the student stays in the class Really I would only kick out a student from the class if the student was being a troublemaker, including failing to follow safety rules, I've had to kick a couple of students out of the lab because they just refused to follow safety rules. That's my answer anyway Posted by: chemjeff at January 08, 2016 05:26 AM (uZNvH) 723
stupid pixy
that is supposed to be 3 separate reasons: I might not remove a failing student from the class: - if I thought there was still a chance the student might yet pass - out of respect for the student's own judgment about what he/she believes is best, even if I disagree - if I am only marginally inconvenienced if the student stays in the class Posted by: chemjeff at January 08, 2016 05:27 AM (uZNvH) 724

Person A's regard for person B might be vicarious.
Ie. Person B might belong to some demographic group that Person A had been indoctrinated into believing he (A) had some duty towards. Thus A's disposition has nothing to do with B as an individual, but with a group to which B belongs. Posted by: Angela Merkel at January 08, 2016 05:34 AM (1BhJn) 727

It doesn't matter the reason for the dislike. Person A still has the ability to remove Person B from his/hers/its presence.
Person A chooses not to do so. Why? Chemjeff. Think of it this way. There is no way the Student is going to pass this semester. None at all. The Student still chooses to go to class knowing full well that he/she/it will have to repeat. Posted by: Tim in Illinois. Old and Unimproved. at January 08, 2016 05:41 AM (WVsWD) 732

If person B were on a self destructive course, person A might derive satisfaction from observing B's progression and knowing that B will have to face the fact that B will have no one but himself to blame.

Not necessarily. Person A could also be secure in just the knowledge that he/she/it has the power over Person B. That is why Person A does not use it. That reason could be both.
