"Sheesh, crude oil is falling off the cliff. Next stop, $30."
Supply and demand. Up till now, crude has been falling because of oversupply. What's scary as hell is that now it's falling further because demand is cratering. And oil is in _everything_ if only by proxy. If demand for oil is falling, by implication, then so is damn near all else. Investment analysts talk about "Dr. Copper" as a macroeconomic signal, but Mr. Oil is even more tighly wired in to what's going on in the real world. Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars(TM) at January 06, 2016 11:42 PM (BK3ZS) As a Mets fan, happy to see Piazza in there. Couple of favorite Piazza stories; He was chatty behind the plate, loved to annoy Chipper Jones by calling him by his first name of Larry. Jones would snippily say "my name is Chipper" and Piazza would retort "I refuse to call a grown man 'Chipper'" Another was when he was with the Dodgers, reporters asked him why there was no sense of unity in the clubhouse; "Hard to feel like a team when there's 5 different languages spoken in the clubhouse" Another was when the Mets were on a flight in 2003 when they started cheering the news that American forces had killed Saddam's sons. Flight attendant asks why all the sudden cheering; Piazza tells her "We got Uday and Kusay!" and the flight attendant says; "I'm sorry, I don't know that much about baseball. Are they any good?". Okay, here's a "Large Amount of Cash" question for Teh Horde:
I'll inherit modest property in FL in the not-too-distant future, and I'll want to sell the house and land. It's a prime location, but not where I want to live, and the house is an old 1947 Florida House..... in perfect repair, but would just be too much work and expense to modernize or enlarge. It'll sell in the blink of an eye, as it's in a PRIME neighborhood. Certainly, the buyer will bulldoze it and build a McMansion on the lot. Figure a quarter mil's worth. And I'd like 'em to bring that to the closing table, in cash. Seriously. I don't want a Cashier's Check or Electronic Draft. I want it in cash, I want to secure it in vault(s) of my choosing and location(s), and I want to do as I please with it, in any amount, at any time, and without seeking anyone's permission to do so, whatsoever. Any ideas for what language or protocols to employ in that quagmire which is the swamp of Real Estate, Banks, Title Companies and their ilk? Hi,
I've been getting up too early to stay for ONT. But I'm here for one more time to ask for prayers for my good friend Gayle. She was diagnosed with Stage 4 ? Brain Cancer, tumor was size of a golf ball & surgeons could only get 80% of it. She was supposed to start chemo & radiation Monday & her daughter updates longer FB posts that she can't. Monday she wrote it was : "end stage" & I didn't know what she meant. I hate FB & sent two private messages. She's not having any treatments, after seeking several doctors & may only have 5 weeks to live. She asked that when I pray, please ask for more time & I responded I'd ask for more quality time. Please pray for Gayle, to have more time, but only if she can enjoy it. I wouldn't want prayers to extend my life if I was bedridden or didn't know anyone, etc. Thank you. Cash is pieces of paper. While better than bits on a hard disk, it's not all that much better. If TSHTF enough that banks are doing bail-ins or such, it'll be easier to get a tree cut down with a case of bourbon than a bunch of Federal Reserve TP. Hammer, I know the Fed will know.
But after that, they won't. If it's in a bank, they would continue to know. I won't even drop hints about securing the stacks, but suffice to say, that's actually the easiest, and discussions and agreements already exist for such. I just want to walk out of the Title Company or the Bank, from the closing, with a said cash in a discrete bag. I will have hired adequate, bonded, professional security to accompany me to *xyz*, and the cash will be rabbit-holed from there. I have every legal right to keep a ridiculous amount of cash in my safe at the house, but of course, won't. Dispersal and higher security will come into play, but I won't trust a bank and I won't trust the .fed to not play "gotcha" with who ones the deposits, either. It's inheritance based, and will be tax free. That's already been very thoroughly vetted by expensive estate, wills & trust attorneys, and the documents have already been drawn up, certified and filed. Logic? Here's an example. I want to buy a pre-owned, but very substantial sailing vessel for my enjoyment, retirement and probable wanderlust. Negotiating with cash is massively advantageous there. And I don't wanna have to go to a bank and BEG to get say, $50k out just to go shopping. So anyway, back to my question. How to get cash at closing. Can it be done? I don't mind if it's difficult, I can deal with that. Just want the road map to do it, and I'll be cool with that. Jim, no way. You'll have to go with a private sale by owner, as-is. No banks, no escrows, no inspections, title insurance, etc.
You'll have to market it to the local attorneys - they know who has the cash. Put the property in a trust, conduct the sale into the trust, then buy a small pizza shop, and skim your cash needs off weekly. Posted by: Jean at January 07, 2016 12:30 AM (fBkaR) 199

Guys, you can have your local law enforcement agency certify the source of funds via your real estate closing papers, and post a "Notice to Transport" onto the NCIC computer system, which is the electronic touchstone of every cop, coast to coast.
It's like a passport for you to move a large amount of cash, personally and actually. Plus, you carry multiple copies of all the closing documents and receipts, all duly certified and notarized. I can hire off-duty cops or special detail on duty cops in each state along the way to drive escort for me and my "baggage" all the way home. Or, I can sail nonstop from FL to Galveston. Or charter a small plane. The seizure aspect is the least of my worries, cause only an amateur throws a bag o' cash into the truck and starts driving. Avoiding "asset forfeiture" is the easy part, actually. I just want to NOT have those funds sit in, and be subject to, a bank. Period. And yeah, there are investments out there, and letting it dry rot in a safe isn't my idea of a growth plan, either. But neither is letting it convert to bits n' bytes, and wake up one day in shocked wonder, only to discover that the balance is $0.00, because some .fed .fuckwad, decided that day to destroy me. I'm NOT going to let that scenario play out. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at January 07, 2016 12:37 AM (McRlu) 211

Withdraw money from banks?
First, keep a cache of metal in a secure location. Use gold chain or denominational coins. Buy over time. My favorite hiding spot is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS! Second, keep at least five to ten bank accounts. You can draw 500 from each during a limited withdrawal period and get 2500 to 5000. Easy to do in the no frikking interest paid thanks Fed era. Third, and a last resort, emulate Dillinger. Be sure to use only John Moses Browning (PBUH) designed weapons. Perhaps a little heavy but ultra reliable. Top end probably would be BAR (with thingie that goes up) but M2 would be sweet. 15 years ago I would snicker myself silly but today I think this is common sense. The times, they are a changing. If its a knock down ... look into forming an LLC with a builder. He finds a buyer, builds the custom house using their down payment, then you and he split the proceeds out of the sale.
This all stays within the LLC/trust, a business. Then work out how you extract the cash. Business's have greater expectations of expenses and cash flow then individuals. You could always buy gold thru the business and sell it off locally for cash. Ive never been asked for id on gold sales of 1-2K. Posted by: Jean at January 07, 2016 12:43 AM (fBkaR) 214
I recently had an epiphany about the "malinvestment" that Austrian economists are always talking about. They're always talking about buggy-whip factories that produce goods nobody wants anymore, and how the debt to build such edifices builds-up to unsustainable levels -- forcing a boom-and-bust cycle.
But I have seen the face of malinvestment, and it is not a buggy-whip.....it's a bureaucrat. When I went to the University of Casual Sun-Bathing, there were three teaching faculty members for every administrator....now they're outnumbered. With the current bunch of clusterfucks in Washington, we've taken on trillions of dollars of debt to increase the population of those that incessantly whine about things -- not to mention their travel budgets to fly to Bali or Paris to whine more, or their retirement plans for when they finally set whining aside. We've bought trillions of dollars of Lois Lerners and Jamie Gorelicks and TSA security theater. And we bought that with promises that people who really produce things are going to pay for them in future exactions. And that's going to go bust very soon. Jim - Well, after you get the money in paper form, regardless of what that paper is, it sounds like a lot of metal is your only choice.
Just using round numbers, gold at $1000/oz. would be 250 oz. = 250/16 = ~ 16 lbs. for a rough number. Problem is, gold is not too easily used for purchases, but it certainly *can* be with a little planning. I think that getting paid in cash may be the hassle. qdpsteve, I see no legal reason for you to not take the cashier's check from the close, and cash it at the issuing bank after giving them notice you intend to do so.
afaik, it still ain't against the law to possess cash. Sure, the bank will report it to the gubmint, but so what. But there are plenty of hazards, most of them from thieving humans. And I can think of a number of forms you might have to fill out someday, where you'd have to declare that cash hoard, thereby letting more people into the know that you possess such a stash. Here's a recent story about a woman, whose housekeeper found a large gold bar in the woman's deceased husband's place -- Word got out, and the woman and her son were killed and the gold bar is still missing. The bar was worth ~$480k. http://tinyurl.com/jo9t5gv Posted by: GnuBreed at January 07, 2016 12:51 AM (gyKtp) 219

Troy ounces are 480 grains, and a Troy pound weighs in at 373.24 grams. Regular materials are weighed in avoirdupois ounces (437.5 grains) and turn into avoirdupois pounds at 16:1 -- making a pound 453.59 grams. Thus, the old thing about whether a pound of gold weighs the same as a pound of feathers....er, no -- the feathers weigh substantially more (453.59 grams v. 373.24 grams). The bad news is that, gold down ten percentish since SPLY and it might not be too bad a time to buy some, you still have to get golf lessons from William deVane. Well, according to that guy, several men did attempt to protect the women and were beaten up themselves.
The bouncer said women ran to him asking him to escort and protect them. He was a big bouncer type apparently. He also said the cops were overwhelmed, and they couldn't even get the injured to the hospital. Some of the men, trying to protect the women, were severely beaten. Howdy, beloved Horde!
I've been kind of quiet around here, mostly just because I'm busy with normal life stuff and I don't have much to say. But I've been lurking! I do have a Horde-source question tonight though. My husband and I have had colds since Sunday. Tonight my husband called me to where he was sitting in front of a space heater and told me he had been feeling cold and having trouble with his head spinning. His pulse, breathing rate, and temperature seem to be within normal parameters. I put my ear on both sides of his back to listen to him breathe and they both sounded he same. (I've never listened to him breathe like that before, so I have no idea if the sound I heard is normal.) We wondered if he perhaps didn't drink enough fluids today, so he has downed a couple of glasses of water. Does anyone know of anything I should watch for that would indicate he needs medical attention? Thanks for any knowledge you can share. Posted by: Emmie at January 07, 2016 01:19 AM (ffVbD) 259

Meh. I only looked through the first 20 and quickly came to the conclusion that one could do very well never having read any of them. I couldn't even be bothered with the rest of them. Emmie.
Get him to drink some PowerAde or other sports drink. Plain water is okay, but if he's dehydrated, he'll need the electrolytes. Also, if his blood sugar is low, the fastest jolt for that is the clear/colored cake decorating gelatin that comes in the small tubes. Squirt or two of that under the tongue is a near-instant rebound if someone is in diabetic mid-crash. But if he needs to come around more slowly, then I always suggest bourbon. It always makes ME feel better, so I recommend it.... I'm generous that way. Hope he gets well soon! Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at January 07, 2016 01:30 AM (McRlu) 269

I can't help but notice that there's not a word in Article 1, section 8 of the Constitution about education, and that somehow we managed as a nation to avoid having a Federal Department of Education until 1973 and prosper quite nicely. Further, despite a rapid increase in Federal spending (and meddling) since the Department of Education's founding, there have been NO, zero, zip, bupkis, ultimate suckitude, empty set, nada measurable improvements in educational outcomes. In that it is one of the smallest cabinet-level agencies, with roughly a mere 4,000 pedophiles and Marxists (as well as the occasional clueless bureaucrat trying to keep breathing for a pension) employed there, it would seem like the nation's easiest candidate for institutional nuking. Hit the fire alarm, evacuate the building, lock everyone out, scan all the drives for child-porn and protected personal information (e.g. social security numbers or information about kids) -- and blow EVERYTHING out to the internet. All the little political games, all the little Gramscian memos, all the devious little schemes to milk the American taxpayer for private gain, EVERYTHING. Every paper file goes either to the internet (accounts payable, consulting contracts) or to the flames (personal info on children). Fire everyone; sell all the assets at auction; sell the buildings. 197 Why is it that in America we don't have 1,000,000 Milton Friedmans teaching 1,000,000 grade school classes this simple 10 minute principle in every state of the nation?
Posted by: Fritz Why? Why? I know your question was rhetorical, but I'll tell you why: Because Gramscian communists have completely taken over the entire educational system in the United States and ONLY postmodern Marxist shit is allowed in our nation's curriculum. It's not some random accident that Milton Friedman's brilliant little parable is excluded from the minds of our children, as are any and all equivalently enlightening nuggets of wisdom or patterns of thought. No, there has been a decades-long (successful) campaign to consciously and intentionally weed out every single useful intellectual lesson or moral framework from our public schools so that children can essentially be brainwashed with a thought disorder known as "progressivism." That's why. Posted by: zombie at January 07, 2016 02:04 AM (jBuUi) 303

Regarding the "castration tool" defensive weapon suggested above, I suppose one could incorporate a Roman candle or a highway flare into an umbrella or walking stick.
But maybe it would be easier to equip an umbrella with a sharp, large hypodermic needle, under a thin metal protective cap. Further down the shaft of the umbrella, near the handle, is placed a CO2 cartridge, as sold for soda siphons. Get attacked by a goblin, jab him hard in the belly with the umbrella point. Thin metal cap is pierced and collpases, needle pierces his abdomen, and fetches up against the boss where the umbrella ribs are hinged, at which point, further pressure jams the CO2 cartridge into its piercing needle, and goblin gets his belly inflated with several cubic feet of icy CO2. Instant severe pain takes him out of fight. Sure, it's a one-shot, but his buddies, if present, won't know that. Similar devices are made and sold for divers as defense against sharks. Even easier is to get a small, 1-2oz poly squirt bottle, for cosmetics, and carry it filled 3/4 full with diluted bleach or ammonia ... diluted enough to cause immediate burning of eyes and other mucus membrane areas. When a fool or 4 get within arm's reach, start squirting ... fear of GOING BLIND is universal. If you have a box-cutter, use it. Those remaining will likely run. Use your feet on the fools; kick in 'nads, ribs, sides of throats. Collect wallets, pull credit cards, IDs and cash. It seems only fair that they should be rolled. Better yet, carry a semi-automatic pistol. You get much more than one shot.
It's also effective against government officials who make it a crime to carry a semi-automatic pistol. Thirty-six. That is all.
Lists like this one are only designed to start arguments. Or, "conversations," as designated leaders of consciousness-raising sessions used to call it. I wonder if one more generation will even be motivated to make such lists. One lifetime ago, everyone was expected to have a similar list of can't-do-without poetry. I seldom see poetry anything but mocked around here, and we're the conservatives. Of course, that's because poetry was never anything but bullshit, right? And that classical music, Jeeze. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon Same is true of several other authors on the list. For example, although the Sam Spade character was OK in The Matese Falcon, I much much prefer the Continental Op character that Dashiell Hammett used in most of his short pieces. I read a compilation of Continental Op short stories that was much more enjoyable than the Maltese Falcon. Posted by: zombie at January 07, 2016 02:35 AM (jBuUi) 321

Seriously, I expect the reason that poetry gets mocked so much is that most of the poetry to which we were exposed in schools was that selected by the Gramscian Communists to deliberately deconstruct Western culture. So no Kipling, but yes to E.E. Cummings.

And if I'm feeling paranoid, I can drill into that -- I don't have to rely on some OS's reliance on MD5 (blown) or SHA-1 (~$70K to decrypt privately, widely assumed to be blown for NSA) to know what's what. It's starting to creep into the systems I use, but I'm still not comfy with it. Posted by: cthulhu at January 07, 2016 04:40 AM (EzgxV) 376
I've read quite a few of the 100 books, but does seeing the movies count for the ones I haven't?

Posted by: cthulhu at January 07, 2016 04:40 AM (EzgxV) I actually hope that init survives as a fork (or as part of distros that fork from systemd), even though I hate it. I hate systemd too. But the different ways it is stupid is actually pushing Linux toward Windows, which I also hate, but it causes me less grief. So I will probably use a systemd variant, even though I want init to stay around as an option, exactly because you can drill down through and control every detail. P.S. the devs missed a HUGE opportunity when they named systemd and did not create a name whose acronym was MCP.
That would have been an awesome troll. Posted by: Merovign, Dark Lord of the Sith at January 07, 2016 04:51 AM (bLnSU) 379

Lordy. The bored cops in my town just came banging on my door. Thought someone had died. No, they just wanted to tell me that my car door was open. Apparently my 5 year old forgot to shut it when he went out to grab something last night.

That essay on Southern honor was interesting, BUT. . . I skimmed the end for time's sake. I will read more later.
I didn't see anything about religion there. The South is the Bible Belt, and doesn't that count for anything in the honor idea? The Scotch-Irish brought with them some particular beliefs that already had profoundly affected the philosophies that pretty much formed Western Civilization. Observation:
None of Friedman's books, even simple ones like Capitalism and Freedom, are on that list of 100 must haves. Sorry, but I'd put Friedman in front of just about anything else on that list. Posted by: RobM1981 at January 07, 2016 11:13 AM (zurJC) Processing 0.03, elapsed 0.0497 seconds. |
