First of all, North Korea says they've exploded a hydrogen bomb, the most powerful, destructive manmade force ever known.

This line, and this whole brief piece by Noemie Emerie, is nothing but truth.Where Bush was asked every day if he regretted invading Iraq, Obama is never asked if he thinks leaving Iraq had something to do with the chaos engulfing the region, or the vulnerability of citizens here and in Europe to Islamic State-inspired attacks. And while Bush was held responsible for every last casualty that occurred anywhere while he held office, Obama is absolved from responsibility for the massacres, rapes and enslavement of innocents that have followed his numerous foreign policy blunders -- given a pass as the victim of forces he did not enable and disasters he didn't create. "Be very glad we don't have a Republican president," Walter Russell Mead told us in May of last year, warning that if such were so we would be enduring a "merciless media pounding" on the series of "failures, mistakes, and false starts" that have been our lot since Obama took office. Take North Korea's claimed detonation of a hydrogen bomb. Some are skeptical they managed it, but they detonated some nuclear device. Obama doesn't want this to be a story, though, as it could, possibly, cast some doubt on his plan to do for Iran what he's already done for North Korea. So it won't be. The American public could be "panicked" by the news, so they must be gently insulated it from it, with yards and yards of padding for Obama and silly-string of whatever domestic drama Obama's Storytellers have cooked up for us today.

There were also lots more American military deaths under Barky than Bush - which went totally unreported. This would have required a major investment of resources and a knowledge base that seems way beyond Nork capacity. I am sceptical [sic] that this was a Hydrogen bomb test. I was told a long time ago that only a few people in the world (about 300) understood the physics and engineering required to assemble a Hydrogen bomb. This is in contrast to assembling an atomic bomb, where there are literally thousands who understand what is necessary to put together such a device .... but are limited by not having the nuclear material to put it together. Does North Korea have the expert(s) to build a Hydrogen bomb .... I doubt it .... and I will not be surprised if in the next few days nuclear experts will be assessing this test in the low kiloton-age range, while also saying that this was not a Hydrogen bomb test.

Weaponeers in the USA and USSR both independently came up with hybrid sorta-thermonuclear weapons in the early years, by incorporating fusion fuel in clever ways in a fission warhead.
You learn stuff from testing such devices that is useful later on when trying to implement actual radiation implosion principles. It's a stop on the road to a true hydrogen bomb.

It's mostly boring where I am in "small town" Bavaria. My integration course is all Romanians and the wives of men who work at Texas Instruments and got transferred here (and they all read and write more languages than I do, but that's another gripe). Our friends are boring because they all have a kid and half of them are preparing to make a second kid.
We took the train to Munich yesterday and it was mostly boring (I did notice only the white people got checked for valid tickets--there was an SE Asian woman who looked annoyed she wasn't asked after she fished out her wallet to present the ticket). There were security guys on the trains and in the Bahnhof, armed with batons and Tasers (that aren't going to stop an explosion). Train and station sucked, but in my experience train stations always suck (my fear of escalators keeps me looking down at my feet).

The chatter is to the effect that they tried one in their last test series, but it was a fizzle yield. No actual fusion burn.
The Pakis have done a fair bit of testing. This is generally reckoned to be progressive refinement of their fission system: reliability enhancement, and miniaturization to fit on different delivery platforms.

A Tale of Two Surges: Bush followed the military's advice (after ignoring it on the invasion) and thanks to Petreaus we won a measure of peace in Iraq (since given up when we abandoned the place). Obama split the baby between the peaceniks and the military and just wasted a bunch of American lives for no purpose.
This is so easy to explain to the American people and yet the media never did. Probably because, like me, they didn't really think the surge was going to work. Almost everybody was pessimistic on Iraq at the time and Bush, by great skill or luck (he was pretty much out of options at that point), turned out to be right and the media was way, way wrong. Which is why it has to be hidden from the people.

Something interesting I noticed recently after deciding to pay the few dollars more per month for commercial free Hulu. They restrict output to one tv only. No simultaneous logins in different rooms, like I used to have.

My reading is getting better, so if I see anything in the local media I can post, but they seem to be very like the international media in refusing to report anything that might get a bomb thrown through their window.

Over the years I've attended a variety of meetings with non-professional, or inexperienced, speakers. A sure route to applause is to cry or get choked up. And I'm not sure why.
I understand encouraging someone who is finding it difficult to speak--but the tears don't add to the value of what the speaker is actually saying and, oddly, I care more about the message than the tears.

mostly boring (I did notice only the white people got checked for valid

I went with traditional style antenna shoved in crawlspace on upper floor for about 40 bucks, Amazon. When you look at saving as much as 1000 bucks a year from dropping cable, antenna is small potatoes.
An inexpensive PVR with fast hard drive is pretty necessary to stop, pause, and replay action if sports is important. That could be another 100 to 200 bucks.

I ended up stopping channel surfing just to see what's on. Lot's of extra time.
Biggest negative, none of the channels allow episode lockouts for children after watching it once. I catch my kids watching the same episodes repeatedly. They ought to have a setting to keep an episode from being rewatched before a set amount of time.

They may have deliberately kept the fusion yield small just to encourage the sort of doubt we are seeing here. They would be able to tell themselves if the fusion booster worked, by having precise knowledge of the expected yield of the fission primer alone vs the yield of the boosted device. And likely they could analyze the prompt radiation from the bomb, and see if it had the hallmarks of a fusion burn.

Spurred on by a comment in a previous thread, I've been listening to a podcast produced by BCochran and ATC.
Overall - Not bad.
BCochran has a good voice for radio/podcast along with a calm, informed style. He seems organized and properly takes subjects from start to finish so that listeners have a logical reference even if they're not familiar with the subject.
ATC is a bit more problematic. Suffering from the same affliction as Sarah Palin, what starts as a pleasant voice quickly escalates into a rushed, two octave higher screed that sometimes peaks the meter.
This escalation also follows with content. As BCochran tries to put a linear thought into play, ATC sometimes needs to interject bits and pieces in a scattershot pattern that only tends to confuse the listener.
There is an entertaining back and forth dynamic between the two, and if you have time, it's worth a listen.

My other encounter with dumbness in school was my college freshman French teacher. He was just plain stupid and it really had nothing to do with anything other than his personal dumbness.
