Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Truest Sentence You'll Read All DayFirst of all, North Korea says they've exploded a hydrogen bomb, the most powerful, destructive manmade force ever known. We don't know if that's necessarily true. That's not what I'm referencing in the headline. This line, and this whole brief piece by Noemie Emerie, is nothing but truth.Where Bush was asked every day if he regretted invading Iraq, Obama is never asked if he thinks leaving Iraq had something to do with the chaos engulfing the region, or the vulnerability of citizens here and in Europe to Islamic State-inspired attacks. And while Bush was held responsible for every last casualty that occurred anywhere while he held office, Obama is absolved from responsibility for the massacres, rapes and enslavement of innocents that have followed his numerous foreign policy blunders -- given a pass as the victim of forces he did not enable and disasters he didn't create. "Be very glad we don't have a Republican president," Walter Russell Mead told us in May of last year, warning that if such were so we would be enduring a "merciless media pounding" on the series of "failures, mistakes, and false starts" that have been our lot since Obama took office. Instead, we have a Democrat who is allowed by the press to fail quietly, discreetly, and off center stage. She then goes on to recount some of the media's headlines about Obama's failures, which, in their telling, read more like triumphs of Obama's reserve and patience. The "off center stage" is an important thing. Bush, obviously, did not want the press to highlight the number of casualties in the Iraq War, but the press did not oblige his wishes, and reported each day's "Grim Milestone." Obama also does not want his bodycount to dominate the news -- but, get this, the press is is more than willing to pretend these stories away. All Obama need do is toss them some stray voltage -- which they know is stray voltage at this point; they're not smart, but they're not that stupid, either -- and the stray voltage partisan pig fight du jour will lead the day. Take North Korea's claimed detonation of a hydrogen bomb. Some are skeptical they managed it, but they detonated some nuclear device. Obama doesn't want this to be a story, though, as it could, possibly, cast some doubt on his plan to do for Iran what he's already done for North Korea. So it won't be. The American public could be "panicked" by the news, so they must be gently insulated it from it, with yards and yards of padding for Obama and silly-string of whatever domestic drama Obama's Storytellers have cooked up for us today. There were also lots more American military deaths under Barky than Bush - which went totally unreported. When Barky took over (and set about to purposefully sabotage our efforts in Afghanistan - remember Barky authorizing a strategic review that recommended a troop surge, which Barky didn't like, so he claimed that the Pentagon had submitted an obsolete review, as it had taken 6 months to complete the review and conditions on the ground had changed ... and then Barky just ignored it all and called for another strategic review, which destroyed a fighting season and took almost 5 months and came back with about the same recommendations ... which Barky also ignored and made some numbers up himself) casualties and fatalities went through the roof, there. But the MSM ignored it and it was as if Afghanistan was actually quieter ... nothing could have been further from teh truth. As to the topic of letting ShitMidas off the hook; How could we expect the press and slobbering fanbois to do any less?
The number of dead that "could" be attributed to Barky's ineptitude "could" be explained by other things. Because the US actually invaded Iraq under Bush, every broken nail and flu outbreak in country was his fault. It is the nature of the partisan press and the foam-finger waving rabble to do so. As always the question under all these stories is what to do about it. On the Norks: A working fission device is possible. They've been working on that for years and the technical challenges are reasonably surmountable. A "Little Boy" style device would possibly be doable even by the Norks. It would be crude and inefficient but still would make a nice big bang.
A fusion device is extraordinarily complex, in a completely different league than a fission weapon. This would have required a major investment of resources and a knowledge base that seems way beyond Nork capacity. Anyway, how could a fusion weapon program operate for years without anyone in the West knowing about it? Isn't this what we have intelligence services for? I call bullshit on a North Korean "H bomb". One of the neatest tricks the MSM pulled with Barky was that they cjhanged the price of oil overnight. While Bush was President the "price of oil" was North Sea Brent, and the minute that Barky slimed into office the "price of oil" overnight changed to West Texas Intermediate, which was more than $10/bbl cheaper. And the MSM had no shame about it, they would report the current "price of oil" (which was West Texas based) and then give the historical peak (was North Sea based and West Texas never hit that price) in the same sentence. It was really something to see. And pretty much no one even noticed the chicanery.

Interesting thing about the Tobin article from the dump, compare the first and last paragraphs:
A New Year's Day event at a square in front of Cologne's main train station where people gathered to watch fireworks over the Rhine turned into a nightmare. Firecrackers were tossed into the crowd and as the throng fled, gangs of several hundred young men acting in what police said was a "coordinated" manner, assaulted what may have been as many one hundred people. Many women, who were circled and isolated as the gangs broke into separate groups, were sexually assaulted and/or robbed. ... so, too, should we be wary of emulating Europe's open gate policy toward Middle Eastern immigrants that aren't being educated about how to live in the West. Is Tobin saying that the problem is one of *education*? As if setting off firecracker in crowds, groping and robbing women is acceptable, normal behavior in other parts of the world, but we just happen to have different cultural norms. So it was a perfectly understandable mistake on the part of the Muzzies, and we just need to educate them. Not, these people are thugs, criminals and they should be kicked out of the country. Cicero: I call bullshit on a North Korean "H bomb". You and the War News Updates editor: http://bit.ly/1OMPXKW I am sceptical [sic] that this was a Hydrogen bomb test. I was told a long time ago that only a few people in the world (about 300) understood the physics and engineering required to assemble a Hydrogen bomb. This is in contrast to assembling an atomic bomb, where there are literally thousands who understand what is necessary to put together such a device .... but are limited by not having the nuclear material to put it together. Does North Korea have the expert(s) to build a Hydrogen bomb .... I doubt it .... and I will not be surprised if in the next few days nuclear experts will be assessing this test in the low kiloton-age range, while also saying that this was not a Hydrogen bomb test. Weaponeers in the USA and USSR both independently came up with hybrid sorta-thermonuclear weapons in the early years, by incorporating fusion fuel in clever ways in a fission warhead. You learn stuff from testing such devices that is useful later on when trying to implement actual radiation implosion principles. It's a stop on the road to a true hydrogen bomb. Yesterday there seemed to be demand for a "Radish Report". As in a daily thing.
What sort of things does everyone want to know? It's mostly boring where I am in "small town" Bavaria. My integration course is all Romanians and the wives of men who work at Texas Instruments and got transferred here (and they all read and write more languages than I do, but that's another gripe). Our friends are boring because they all have a kid and half of them are preparing to make a second kid. We took the train to Munich yesterday and it was mostly boring (I did notice only the white people got checked for valid tickets--there was an SE Asian woman who looked annoyed she wasn't asked after she fished out her wallet to present the ticket). There were security guys on the trains and in the Bahnhof, armed with batons and Tasers (that aren't going to stop an explosion). Train and station sucked, but in my experience train stations always suck (my fear of escalators keeps me looking down at my feet). "I may have missed something in the news but I have never heard that the Pakistanis have a fusion bomb."
The chatter is to the effect that they tried one in their last test series, but it was a fizzle yield. No actual fusion burn. The Pakis have done a fair bit of testing. This is generally reckoned to be progressive refinement of their fission system: reliability enhancement, and miniaturization to fit on different delivery platforms. I don't have the physics knowledge to speculate as to whether this was a small H-bomb or a regular A-bomb or, as someone on the teevee suggested, some sort of hybrid.
I am a little concerned that the Norks demonstrated something demonstrably 'splodey to the point that all the earthquake guys picked it up and all of our betters are saying "pish, it wasn't an H-bomb it was merely an A-bomb, do not trouble your knitted brows". I read about that North Korea test yesterday. The article said there was the equivalent of a 5.1 earthquake yesterday and that was what they measured when North Korea conducted their previous test.
If it was a hydrogen bomb, shouldn't it have been 6.1 or higher? I would expect something at least 10X their previous fission device if this really was a fusion device. A Tale of Two Surges: Bush followed the military's advice (after ignoring it on the invasion) and thanks to Petreaus we won a measure of peace in Iraq (since given up when we abandoned the place). Obama split the baby between the peaceniks and the military and just wasted a bunch of American lives for no purpose. This is so easy to explain to the American people and yet the media never did. Probably because, like me, they didn't really think the surge was going to work. Almost everybody was pessimistic on Iraq at the time and Bush, by great skill or luck (he was pretty much out of options at that point), turned out to be right and the media was way, way wrong. If it was a hydrogen bomb, shouldn't it have been 6.1 or higher? I would expect something at least 10X their previous fission device if this really was a fusion device.
Of course, I would not be surprised to learn that North Korea detonated a fission device and just told Kim Jung Idiot it was hydrogen bomb. Posted by: JB1000 at January 06, 2016 11:32 AM (16OL0) They may have deliberately kept the fusion yield small just to encourage the sort of doubt we are seeing here. They would be able to tell themselves if the fusion booster worked, by having precise knowledge of the expected yield of the fission primer alone vs the yield of the boosted device. And likely they could analyze the prompt radiation from the bomb, and see if it had the hallmarks of a fusion burn. It is, of course, much worse than Emerie says. Not just the systematic distortion that has replaced "journalism". But the acceptance of this surreal situation by the country/electorate/consumers. And the de facto acquiescence in it all by the GOP and other institutions.
And let's not forget the hysteria and idiocy over Iraq by the people themselves, so easily led around by the crude, North Korean style distortions of the propaganda machine. One sees the jaw-droppingly stupid, baseless memes and myths that passed for thinking by the hysterical majority repeated right here at the HQ on a frequent basis. Unsolicited podcast review...
Spurred on by a comment in a previous thread, I've been listening to a podcast produced by BCochran and ATC. Overall - Not bad. BCochran has a good voice for radio/podcast along with a calm, informed style. He seems organized and properly takes subjects from start to finish so that listeners have a logical reference even if they're not familiar with the subject. ATC is a bit more problematic. Suffering from the same affliction as Sarah Palin, what starts as a pleasant voice quickly escalates into a rushed, two octave higher screed that sometimes peaks the meter. This escalation also follows with content. As BCochran tries to put a linear thought into play, ATC sometimes needs to interject bits and pieces in a scattershot pattern that only tends to confuse the listener. There is an entertaining back and forth dynamic between the two, and if you have time, it's worth a listen. Posted by: jwest at January 06, 2016 12:10 PM (Zs4uk) 320

"I'm so old I remember the fear of nuclear winter."
If the American military ejects Saddam Hussein's forces from Kuwait, Saddam will burn the Kuwaiti oil fields, and there will be a "mini nuclear winter" in the northern hemisphere, with massive crop failures and economic disruption. "The axis of evil" was a very real and consequential thing - so of course was mocked ignorantly by the media and the vapid Beltway set. True even though it was an assymmetric "axis" (NK-Iran was active and critical, Iraq's role was de facto or potential).
NK "offshored" some of its ballistic missile activity to Iran after it's clumsy provocative missile testing had generated so much flak in the far east. There were/are other areas of cooperation. It's more of an "axis" than Germany and Japan ever were, in practice, in WWII. Posted by: rhomboid at January 06, 2016 12:15 PM (QDnY+) 331

Add in the MFM and I'd agree. There's no question in my mind that what has happened to us was planned and executed by our enemies. Sometimes I like to amuse myself by wondering where we'd be socially, politically and scientifically if we'd had actual Americans in charge of those two institutions over the past 50 years instead of the Dim/Prog/Com Bureau of Misinformation. This would have required a major investment of resources and a knowledge base that seems way beyond Nork capacity.
The Chinese certainly have the capability. Have they passed any of that along to their vassal state, North Korea? On a different note, it bothers me that the media have been fairly circumspect about what the experts believe the Nork test yield is with respect to the measured Richter value. If this wasn't a problem, I'd expect more detail. Posted by: Additional Blond Agent at January 06, 2016 12:37 PM (PMGbu) 351

291 Here's what Trump could do: vaporize Pyongyang with a massive, say 50 megaton hydrogen bomb, and claim it was a Nork test gone haywire, pretext for more bombing.
Posted by: model_1066 at January 06, 2016 12:00 PM (nuYpj) --- He'd have to do the "more bombing" part just to cover up the signatures of the first which the chi-coms and Russians would surely be able to peg to us, assuming of course we used our own material and not that of someone else.
