Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Overnight Open Thread (1-3-2016)When I arrived in Leningrad, Mikhail Gorbachev had just become general secretary, and the Cold War was still very much alive. But almost as soon as I left, things began to change. Any American who made her first trip across the Iron Curtain even three years later, in 1988, would encounter a completely different world and a different vocabulary - glasnost, perestroika, reform - from the one I had found. Which also means that anyone of any nationality who is more than a decade younger than I can't possibly have any adult recollection of either the USSR, or the Cold War, or what we used to call "real existing socialism" at all. It's all about power. And they don't care about the Constitution, or social norms of free speech and academic freedom, or campus talk about civility. Because it's all about power. There is nothing admirable about this, it is not simply overzealous well-meaning people. It is mob violence. Because it's all about power. "But we now live in the age of the fake nerd and I think that's where Star Wars fits best. The people that 'f***ing love science!' and watch Big Bang Theory can't shut up about Star Wars. It's another method to signal their membership in the cult of pseudo-scientism. They may never have made it past geometry in school, but they swear they grew up on comic books and were always a nerd." On the other hand if there's one thing I hate, it's nerdier-than-thou nerd hipsterism. Blattmann has been head of the Armed Forces since, 1 March 2009 and his words carry very significant weight in a country in which several Citizens' Initiative referenda against burqas and mosques have proven enormously popular as concerns grow about immigration and Islamisation. Wow! I didn't see the beheading of Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham, coming up in the season premiere of DA's final series. And they're leading him up to the square where the execution is to take place and you say to yourself, "Do the loyal guards jump in now to save him?" and it doesn't happen. And then he's in the square walking up to the chopping block and you say to yourself, "Do the loyal guards jump in now to save him?" and it doesn't happen. And then he's got his neck on the block and the axeman raisese the axe to strike and you say to yourself, "Do the loyal guards jump in now to save him?" and it doesn't happen. And then the cut off his frigging head and you go, "Oh WOW! They just cut off Robert's head!! Holy F#CK!!!"

Real Nerd loves spending 3 hours arguing about Star Wars.
Posted by: buzzion - Pinochet 2016! Back in the 1980's, I used to go to SF-Cons on occasion with a couple of friends (that were married, and their wives went too). I was single and part of the mission was to find a hot single chick that was interesting. Bad idea, really. Most of the girls were fat and weird, but some of the really hot ones were obviously the center of attention. I stopped doing that about 1988 or 1989. I met Lois McMaster Bujold, and talked to her for a while at one of the Cons, and also talked to her husband (now long divorced). She was kinda cute, nerdy hot, if you know what I mean. A few years older than me I googled up a picture of her recently, and ....she hasn't aged well. This, among many other things, cured me of being any kind of SF Nerd. It's a mug's game, fellah. She can almost run faster on 3 legs than I can on 2. She slept in my lap a bit & purrs occasionally. So I am hoping it is awkward but not painful. She can jump! She made it up to the bed last night. It's all about power. And they don't care about the Constitution, or social norms of free speech and academic freedom, or campus talk about civility. Because it's all about power. There is nothing admirable about this, it is not simply overzealous well-meaning people. It is mob violence. Because it's all about power.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at January 03, 2016 11:36 PM (zc3Db) Suicidal insanity nailed it. There's a certain element of self-hate that underlies a lot of modern Leftist thought. They remind me of how there were flagellants during the Plague era that thought that beating themselves with whips and chains would spare them because they'd be purged of their sins. All of their insanity rests on a sort of notion of original sin, that Western Civilization is somehow inherently unfair just because it's been on a winning streak since the Trojan War. Their anti-philosophy is perched on the idea of moral relativism, so the idea that one civilization can get things right (which requires objective truth) is anathema to them. In what passes for their thought, we have to be cheating, and cheaters have to be punished. Posted by: Cato the Rebel Without a Party at January 03, 2016 11:41 PM (HalrA) 105

Ring knockers.
I was thinking about what it takes to start a rebellion, and why the colonials rebelled against King George and why we haven't. In the time of King George, if you were unhappy with the King and wanted a new one, you had to rebel. There weren't any other choices unless you wanted to wait until the King died of old age and then you would have all the pretenders to the throne fight it out; you would be on one side or the other, no innocent bystanders. Now days, in modern times, if you don't like the King we have, just wait four years and vote for another one. But, you see, nothing changes, except for the guy standing in front of the camera. All those people in the ruling class standing behind the new King are still there. Those people still rule. The 'deep state' it was called, the bureaucracy of life time appointment. That's where the real power is, and those people we can't seem to vote out of office. So we are being played by the experts, the consultants, the pundits, the media, especially the media, the insiders who leak official secrets, and the journolisters who have secret, off the record, meetings with the King where they are told what to say and how to say it. But only if a democrat is the current King du jour. Posted by: A.Smythers, A Celt at January 03, 2016 11:42 PM (XURvj) Posted by: Bob at the NSA at January 03, 2016 11:42 PM (dbDB8) 115

And PC prevents people from expressing their concerns about refugees coming here.
In Lancaster PA the other day two rallies were held. One by those concerned about Muslim refugees being brought into the town, both the possibility that they might be terrorists and also the money and services they will receive all the while we are not assured that they deserve one dime. And the other claiming the usual we're all descended from refugees and how can we refuse to help these people with apparently no concern that they might have lied to get here and what else they might get up to after being settled here. The one had 20 people show up and the other had 200 people show up. News reports were totally slanted towards dissing and dismissing those concerned about the money and services being given away to those who we have no guarantee that they deserve them and praising and drooling over those that were giddy over allowing them in regardless. Oh and the ones expressing concern were showing hate and evil (they actually said similar to the reporter). And so the only thing anyone is left with is to arm oneself and hope that anything that happens will happen to someone else. Of course that still means that these folks will be getting tax free assistance; housing, training, food stamps and other assistance all on the taxpayers dime for who knows how long. I don't mind that others have a contrary opinion it's that they always claim the moral high ground and that their opponents are evil and hateful just for having a contrary opinion. Sorry to bust any bubbles, but Gorbachev did not mean for his reforms to go as far as they did and certainly not for them to dissolve the USSR.
It was a hilarious mistake. An example of a preference cascade. Gorbachev has/had no right in claiming any part of responsibility for the reforms in the USSR as they turned out. He was as shocked and angry and scared as anyone else. Which is why us Reaganites get so made when he gets credit for the disarmament talks also. But that's the communist leaning media for you. Of course, I got my husband Witcher 3 for Christmas so that's taken up all of our entertainment time lately. Supposedly it's 200 hours or something so I guess we'll just be hanging out with Geralt til the end of time. Funny story though. I wanted to know what the feminists had to say about it, because you just know that they'd hate it. Well, I found a review by some beta male extraordinaire who was bitching that Geralt doesn't have emotion other than being a rage machine. Clearly the guy had never picked up the game. Oh, and of course Sorkesian bitching that people called the women sluts. You know, the same townspeople who regularly hiss and spit at all the magical characters. Oh, SJWs. Most people are not descended from colonists. Used to be the largest ethnic group were Germans. The Irish came to escape the potato famine. My Norwegian relatives came because the Dakotas were being settled and they could get cheap farm land, unlike Norway. My Bohemian relatives came because of the many many small wars that kept changing the German, Polish and bohemian borders. My Scots relatives fought for the British during the revolution and then moved to Canada. The largest waves of immigration came during periods of upheaval in Europe.
Nonetheless they had to show they were healthy, could work, would be sponsored by a relative who would assume care for them, and they all assimilated. They wanted to be Americans. Not hyphenates Posted by: ThunderB at January 04, 2016 12:15 AM (zOTsN) 241

Applebaum was in Leningrad after me, so her (correct) point about it being hard to convey what the USSR was like is actually greatly under-stated.
Yet there were actually very few hard edgesin our experience. I still recall one group member, whose Russian was marginal, and who was quite a character, snarking "we're afraid of THESE guys?" after we'd walked from the plane to the terminal - everything looking shoddy - in a painted lane flanked by young, disheveled, hapless looking uniformed KGB troops. But the evil, and danger, that was the USSR is indeed a complete bafflement or unknown to so many today. And the historical illiteracy and moral imbecility are not just academic points. It's a key component, if that concept works, of the overall ignorance of today's "educated" people. The sort whose first instinct in a discussion of the unspeakable enormities of the Nazis, or the Soviets, or the Chicoms, or Ba'athist Iraq - is to bring up slavery. You know - the timeless human institution finally ended (mostly) by western moral development (esp. Christianity), British naval power and empire, and American blood. Their idiotic moral inversion is impenetrable, and beyond repair. As are most of their intellectual failure and lack of American sensibilities. Crushingly discouraging - and alienating - and no fix in sight. Posted by: rhomboid at January 04, 2016 12:20 AM (QDnY+) 258

In case anyone has not mentioned it ; the Breitbart article linked regarding CA requirements for graduation is misleading/wrong.
The law is ONLY in relation to the Exit Exam (my daughter took it 3 years ago, my son, currently a Sophomore will no longer be required to take it) The H.S graduation requirements are still in place -- i.e you actually have to pass your classes/take the require courses/attain the proper amount of credits The law only means that a student does not need to pass or even take the CA "Exit Exam" (a standardized test which has not even been given since last year -- it's offering was suspended) in order to graduate. It used to be that you had a $1 Federal Reserve Note, that meant you had a 1/10,000 claim on a $10,000 T-bill "backed by the full faith and credit of the United States", which meant that the Federal Leviathan would tax the shit out of people before they'd miss an interest payment or fail to redeem at full value. After "Maiden Lane", the $1 bill in your pocket had a whole bunch of speculative shit in it -- besides the "full faith and credit" that the Feds were backing away from. Many alcoholic drinks are sugary. and so interfere with low card diets, but hard liquor+diet soda should be low carb, though you still have to watch the calories. Realistically, though, they're moving from the Christmas shipping season to the postal rate change and it's just going to be a horrific mess for the next two months. So, cookies. Posted by: cthulhu at January 04, 2016 02:43 AM (EzgxV) 448

Cooth,
I think you would have loved to see your little buddy today. He ran for hours at Miss Shirley's house, and next door, and next door... Then, he chased rats/mice in Shirley's garage for another hour or two. When I finally brought him home, he just fell out. I swear, I could tie strings on his paws right now, do a marionette show, and he wouldn't complain! You see dozens of people marching for the exits holding their youngsters hanging totally limp. Sometimes they're cradled in their arms, sometimes they're over the shoulder.....but it's like a war zone, and the kids are just inert. I can see Tucker with DBS. Lay him on the couch, he's DBS sideways -- lay him in his sleeping place, he's DBS another way -- lay him on the counter, he's DBS with is head hanging over. It means he's just had The Best Day Ever. Mornin'.
Still fighting off the flu, can't sleep. From the linked American Thinker piece on ungrateful "refugees": "But it's impossible to Skype without Wi-Fi, so they're demanding faster service." I don't get it. I know I'm the least tech-savviest guy around, but I do know that I Skype (I am required to, as part of my work-from-home job) and I definitely do not have Wi-Fi. I just had a vision of me at about seven years old (?), Mom shopping for 18 hours straight at the Navy exchange, me hanging on by a thread.
Dangling like like a puppet from her hand - I can remember saying "waaaater. I needed waaaaaater..." She didn't find it anywhere near as funny as everyone around us did. Yes, I was a ham even way back then. Posted by: Chi at January 04, 2016 03:39 AM (gQfxF) 460

Well I was wrong. My Muse, as I lay there trying to sleep, sorted out the bar scene for me. So throwing off the covers I did scurry to the word processor to sling more words on to the screen. A total of 1,001 additional words on top of the previous written 852 thus flowed from my fingers to electronic slate. So I am now past 28,000 words also.
And Lauren, did use the Monty Python reference. Posted by: Anna Puma at January 04, 2016 03:42 AM (/fW7M) 462

Posted by: Chi at January 04, 2016 03:53 AM (gQfxF) I'm not going to keep much up for very long, I'm afraid.....but how did a five-year-old go missing for half the night without total panic? Some camping anecdotes -- spent the night over at my uncle's place one night in sleeping bags on cots....his lab puppy chewed the bottom off my sleeping bag teething (good thing my feet weren't included!). Then there was a Boy Scout sleepover in the local city park. I got up during the night to take a whizz and collected enough dew to shiver my way through the rest of the night. What was wrong with the prequels were things that could have been helped enormously with reshoots (by a different director). And getting the small things wrong can rightly piss people off over and over. Being reminded that the wrong person is at the helm will happen maybe five times in ten minutes.
But 7 was executed without any kind of wild and entertaining vision. JJ has less vision than the people who made movies like John Carter, Hellboy, Mad Max, ect. Posted by: BourbonChicken at January 04, 2016 07:06 AM (VdICR) 490
