2016 West Point Cadets Will Wear Class Rings Containing WTC Steel
One tradition I was not aware is that since 2002 families of a deceased West Point graduate can send in their rings to be re-smelted with the gold used in the rings for new classes. So every new graduate carries a bit of gold on his hand that was worn by previous generations of graduates.
Each class designs its own rings. The ingots of the class of 2016's rings were poured earlier in the year at the Pease & Curren refinery in Rhode Island. That ceremony, known as the "ring melt," is a tradition begun for the rings of West Point's bicentennial class in 2002.Since then, it's not just any gold that goes into these rings. They're made from gold from class rings that were worn by earlier graduates and that have been donated, melted and mixed with new gold to make rings for the following year's first-class cadets.
A small amount of gold is preserved after each melt so that every graduating class will have traces of gold from all the rings that have been donated since the program began.
This has enabled every class since 2002 to "grip hands" with graduates from the past.
This year, 34 class rings were donated from classes between 1924 and 1985. Some families donating rings sent family members to the ring melt, where they placed the rings in a crucible. A film of the event shows a number of them, including Tom O'Neil, who donated the ring worn by his grandfather.
The grandfather, Colonel Thomas O'Neil, had been in the class of 1934. His grandson had carried his ring through two combat tours in Iraq and two years in Afghanistan. At the ring melt, he spoke of what the moment would have meant to his grandfather.

Back in the 1980's, I used to go to SF-Cons on occasion with a couple of friends (that were married, and their wives went too). I was single and part of the mission was to find a hot single chick that was interesting.
Bad idea, really. Most of the girls were fat and weird, but some of the really hot ones were obviously the center of attention. I stopped doing that about 1988 or 1989.
I met Lois McMaster Bujold, and talked to her for a while at one of the Cons, and also talked to her husband (now long divorced). She was kinda cute, nerdy hot, if you know what I mean. A few years older than me
I googled up a picture of her recently, and ....she hasn't aged well.
This, among many other things, cured me of being any kind of SF Nerd. It's a mug's game, fellah.

I hate to break it to that guy, but in 1977 EVERYBODY-not just nerds and members of Science Fiction Book Club-went and saw the movie. Twice, on the statistical average. It was a great space opera film for everyone, and a lot of people (myself included) are SF fans with an imagination because of it. Now, real Star Wars nerds, those are the guys and gals who give a damn about midichlorians and where the First Order comes from. Everyone else went and saw the movie, and though it was pretty damn good.

Suicidal insanity nailed it. There's a certain element of self-hate that underlies a lot of modern Leftist thought. They remind me of how there were flagellants during the Plague era that thought that beating themselves with whips and chains would spare them because they'd be purged of their sins.
All of their insanity rests on a sort of notion of original sin, that Western Civilization is somehow inherently unfair just because it's been on a winning streak since the Trojan War. Their anti-philosophy is perched on the idea of moral relativism, so the idea that one civilization can get things right (which requires objective truth) is anathema to them. In what passes for their thought, we have to be cheating, and cheaters have to be punished.

I was thinking about what it takes to start a rebellion, and why the colonials rebelled against King George and why we haven't.
In the time of King George, if you were unhappy with the King and wanted a new one, you had to rebel. There weren't any other choices unless you wanted to wait until the King died of old age and then you would have all the pretenders to the throne fight it out; you would be on one side or the other, no innocent bystanders.
Now days, in modern times, if you don't like the King we have, just wait four years and vote for another one. But, you see, nothing changes, except for the guy standing in front of the camera. All those people in the ruling class standing behind the new King are still there. Those people still rule. The 'deep state' it was called, the bureaucracy of life time appointment. That's where the real power is, and those people we can't seem to vote out of office.
So we are being played by the experts, the consultants, the pundits, the media, especially the media, the insiders who leak official secrets, and the journolisters who have secret, off the record, meetings with the King where they are told what to say and how to say it. But only if a democrat is the current King du jour.

There is a little Yorkie next door that is missing a leg, but you wouldnt know it to watch her. From what I can tell watching her run, she doesn't know it either.
In fact, I once picked her up, took her back home, and never realized she was missing a back leg!
When she got loose a couple weeks ago, I took my pup out searching for her (how far could she go? She is about 7 pounds and only has 3 legs!). 3 hours later...
She was a least a mile away, happy as could be. Walked right in to a local business, looking for a bellyrub.

In Lancaster PA the other day two rallies were held.
One by those concerned about Muslim refugees being brought into the town, both the possibility that they might be terrorists and also the money and services they will receive all the while we are not assured that they deserve one dime.
And the other claiming the usual we're all descended from refugees and how can we refuse to help these people with apparently no concern that they might have lied to get here and what else they might get up to after being settled here.
The one had 20 people show up and the other had 200 people show up.
News reports were totally slanted towards dissing and dismissing those concerned about the money and services being given away to those who we have no guarantee that they deserve them and praising and drooling over those that were giddy over allowing them in regardless. Oh and the ones expressing concern were showing hate and evil (they actually said similar to the reporter).
And so the only thing anyone is left with is to arm oneself and hope that anything that happens will happen to someone else. Of course that still means that these folks will be getting tax free assistance; housing, training, food stamps and other assistance all on the taxpayers dime for who knows how long.
I don't mind that others have a contrary opinion it's that they always claim the moral high ground and that their opponents are evil and hateful just for having a contrary opinion.
Luckily, I don't live in Lancaster.

Of course, I got my husband Witcher 3 for Christmas so that's taken up all of our entertainment time lately. Supposedly it's 200 hours or something so I guess we'll just be hanging out with Geralt til the end of time.

Have you looked at cookbooks from Alton Brown, Shirley Corriher and/or Harold McGee?
They all take cooking as excercises in chemistry and/or physics, all very interesting and doable recipes, starting with basics and then gradually moving up.
Might be good resources for you.

We are in a discovery phase. It used to be that you had a $1 Federal Reserve Note, that meant you had a 1/10,000 claim on a $10,000 T-bill "backed by the full faith and credit of the United States", which meant that the Federal Leviathan would tax the shit out of people before they'd miss an interest payment or fail to redeem at full value.
After "Maiden Lane", the $1 bill in your pocket had a whole bunch of speculative shit in it -- besides the "full faith and credit" that the Feds were backing away from.

Realize that there are weirdisms -- like, if you want the center of your steak to come out more pink, you have to cook at a higher temp. Use the right tools. Learn from every experience. Tho that might depend upon when your lineage was accepted. They used to have less stringent evidence accepted for a line, might require more today.

The difference being, we bought this place at less than 1/3 of what comparable places are selling for today. Bricks and mortar, trim and fixtures mean nothing towards value.

My family has been going to Disneyland since forever -- my grandfather did wiring in the Golden Horseshoe Saloon -- and a family tradition is observing "Dead Baby Syndrome" around closing time. You see dozens of people marching for the exits holding their youngsters hanging totally limp. Sometimes they're cradled in their arms, sometimes they're over the shoulder.....but it's like a war zone, and the kids are just inert.
I can see Tucker with DBS. Lay him on the couch, he's DBS sideways -- lay him in his sleeping place, he's DBS another way -- lay him on the counter, he's DBS with is head hanging over.
It means he's just had The Best Day Ever.

I'm not going to keep much up for very long, I'm afraid.....but how did a five-year-old go missing for half the night without total panic?
Some camping anecdotes -- spent the night over at my uncle's place one night in sleeping bags on cots....his lab puppy chewed the bottom off my sleeping bag teething (good thing my feet weren't included!).
Then there was a Boy Scout sleepover in the local city park. I got up during the night to take a whizz and collected enough dew to shiver my way through the rest of the night.
