Many more moving pieces than that.

The Saud family made a deal with the devil years ago - the Wahhabis. They helped them capture the land that is known as KSA.

Part of the Sauds staying in family is throwing a lot of bones to the Wahhabis. The Sauds run the civil govt, the Wahhabis run everything else (kind of a power sharing agreement).

Anyways -- shias are their mortal enemy.

It's a weird situation, but if KSA is executing people for being "extremists" chances are they are nothing of the sort.

And if they're Shia (as these were), then they're considered kaffirs, and treated as such.

You might remember that the English aristocracy was all about #1 son being raised as the heir; #2 got sidelined into clergy as "the spare"; and any remaining males were farmed off to the military to try and conquer something. It's likely the same sort of thing among the House of Saud -- and the spares and externally focused sorts are not all that focused on making life easy for the heirs.

3,4-methylenedioxy-methamphetamine, if we're chemists.

its a party drug. Lowers inhibitions (big time) and makes tactile things much more... real.

That. MDMA does that. And it keeps you up all night. Sex is good on it or so I've, er, been told.

But it is also neurotoxic. It will fuck up your brain for some months. If you're in your mid 20s - which I was when I did it - then expect memory issues, sudden flashbacks, etc. If you're older, your brain might stay fucked up (wouldn't know). If younger, it might induce dependency like (other forms of) meth do.

It is in French, so for those of you (other than Ace who needs the practice) who don't read French, go to the "Uniforms" link on the Left sidebar of the main page and scroll through the various evolutions of the uniforms from the red and blue of 1914 to the all horizon blue of the 1918 uniform.

If you click on any of the links to specific items of kit, it opens a new page devoted to that uniform with lots of extra pictures of various bits of kit

182 The carrier-debate link refers to, among other things, "continuing to build FORD Class carriers and benefiting from the
historic constant dollar decline in cost of ships in serial production."

Shipbuilding becomes more serially efficient and enjoys economies of scale only above a certain build rate.

If the USN were able to afford to have two or three Ford-class CVN coming off of the ways every year, prices would fall, and quickly. But the Navy can't even remotely afford that.

Also, if you want falling prices in shipbuilding, you really do have to compete the contracts among multiple yards, and the shipyard industrial base in America has become too small to accomplish that feat.

318 Squeaking of kittehs...

When two-year-old Scarlette Tipton first met her new 3-month-old friend in December, she noticed right away what made Holly special.

"Owie?" Scarlette said, pointing to the kitten's amputated right front leg.

"Yes," Simone Tipton told her daughter, who also had an amputated limb. Scarlette lost her left arm due to a rare form of cancer when she was only 10 months old.
"Yes, an owie. Just like you," her mother said. "But she's okay - just like you are too."...

Well, it did. It was funny. The wheel did sort of a bobble, then shot to the sideways to the left, hit the ditch and bounced flying off. The inside wheel, while that was going on laid over, but didn't come off, and the truck listed hard to the side. The driver got it to stop safely. The little spacer in between wheels flew off as well.

I was way back, and once it was over, I passed him, and looked and his eyes were as big as saucers. I bet his underwear needed changing fast.

I was driving a loaded truck and had a blowout on the outside rear. I just about shit myself. I think my heart jumped up in my mouth.

I was fortunate enough to go to public schools when they still taught facts in some classes without an overlay of social justice indoctrination.....and my understanding is that making hooch ain't rocket science. You make a carbohydrate-rich liquid, sterilize it (by boiling), introduce selected yeast (rather than, say, random e-coli), wait until it stops bubbling, then do some basic fractional distillation.

Methanol, which is poisonous, boils at 151 degrees; ethanol, the good stuff, boils at 173 and a smidge; isopropyl, ick, is 177; and, of course, water is 212. At 160 degrees for a while, you can condense off what you accidentally leached out of whatever you fermented and use it for lighter fluid. If you can heat precisely to 175, you'll then get a nice condensate.

In rougher terms, I understand that you just run the still into sequential containers and just discard the "heads" and the "tails" -- then blend what you kept.

My hairiest highway holy shit story was when I was in the number one lane trying to pass a van in the number 2 with a semi beside us both in the number 3 lane.

Boxed in as boxed gets.

Van's rear tire popped off and started bouncing back towards my windshield.

Couldn't swerve anywhere.

The thing bounced over my car.

I just fucking floored it, screaming like madman.

Slivo's a little trickier.

Ya takes your plums and smash the shit out of them, keeping the stones and skins and all in the vat. The yeast on the skin of the plums - this is in homemade - is usually enough to get the must going before too long.

It'll ferment to a very low abv. You strain it - or don't - and run it thru your pot still. pitch the heads and tails, as you say.

But the still pots are notoriously inefficient, so it takes a couple runs to get a good, stout slivo from your must.

Takes something like 20 pounds of plums to make a liter of slivo.

413 402: I wonder what the odds of that happening are, actually. The front of the drive shaft had to get a good grip on the pavement, so that pole vaulting the rear end was easier that bending/breaking the shaft. And it had to be light enough, of course.

I imagine if it hit enough to the side, it would be easier just to push sideways, kicking the rear end around rather than pole vaulting.

Another weird one was a woman was killed in a freak accident on a road
just a couple of miles from here. She was going along and the drive
shaft fell off the end of the transmission.

The front end
jobbed into the pavement and pole vaulted the rear end up in the air,
flipping her over. Just imagine a car going down the road at 50MPH or so
and just flipping over, rear end up and over. It killed her right
there.

473 One of my scarier moments on the freeway.....headed south on local route 85, AKA "the roller-coaster" because the damned freeway bounces up-and-down so much. I'm toolin' along in my Honda Accord, and this SUV known for being in a fight with Consumer Reports about an unacceptable risk of rollover accidents* starts moving into my lane with the bumper at my passenger's side door. So I toot my horn to remind them that perhaps they should check for vehicles under 6-foot-tall, and the SUV jerks away, swerves across two lanes of traffic, rides up on the Jersey curb, swings back over three lanes of traffic, and rolls-over in the lane right behind me. I pulled-over into the median, got out, dialled 9-1-1, made a report, and started running back to the SUV (which was about a half-mile back).

Amazingly, as it turns out, I was the SECOND person to call it in -- I saw it in my rear-view-mirror as I was driving, but an off-duty EMT saw it in his windshield. He pulled off right next to the wreck and was thoroughly in-charge as I huffed-and-puffed to the scene. I understand that everyone survived with minor bumps and scrapes and even that all the stuff in the back of the SUV was recoverable.

But you couldn't pay me enough to have me drive one of those top-heavy deathtraps.

(warning: many popups and blind clicks)

There's been a lot of activity in the area with people really tired of the federal government's stomping on rural people, farmers, and ranchers such as seizing 2.5 million acres of grazing land to create a new wilderness area where nobody ever goes except ranchers. This throwing a guy back in prison for burning noxious and encroaching weeds is apparently the last straw.

co-worker and I were on a pick up route in a mini-van on one of the shittiest freeways in socal; the 710.

A moderate amount of traffic flowing nicely at the speed limit.

Another van full of gardeners or day-laborers starts to pass us on the left. But the van starts to slow down and starts to shimmy.

I only saw this out of the corner of my eye but fortunately my co-worker was watching.

The van shimmies into a full blown spin out at 65 mph in the middle of the freeway next to us.

I saw the passengers mouthing something in spanish with eyes as big as cue balls as they slowly drifted past us spinning a full 180. We blasted past the whole result.

I was laughing like a mad man afterwards.

The stated goal of diversity is to enrich the college and students through exposure to and experiences with different ethnic backgrounds, how can that happen with voluntary segregation?

The author identified Mt. Sinai as in the Arabian peninsula, and went on to give the exact site, by his best guess.

Saudi military reservation, and a big one. There were rumors even in the late 90's about the Saudi nuke program..... Basic idea is they just bought the final product from the Paks.

I had a wheel fall off the Suburban I currently drive. GM factory mags from a newer model. I think somebody tried to steal them, and got scared off before they got one removed. Because less than a week prior, I had had it in the tire shop, and had the wheel lugs torqued, after I myself had mounted the then new-to-me wheels. I wanted an independent set of hands to torque the lug nuts. Because safety is important. Fortunately, no damage done, but it was sort of scary. Left rear wheel, it was.

716 Who're we kidding?

No matter how bad things get, most of us will end up acting like most people did throughout most of history, which is to say, we'll carry on as best we can, and not get involved if at all possible.

I've known a ton of guys who went through the GPW and survived Stalin; met more than a few who endured East Germany, with all its repressions. Hungarians, Czechoslovakians (look it up, Millenials; there did used to be such people), etc., etc.; history shows that most people, most of the time, don't do a damned thing. Which is smart - it's how you survive.

What makes us think it'll be different here?

719 Much more fun to watch in the rear-view mirror as following drivers try to dodge the debris! I had a friend who lost the entire exhaust system off his ratted-out '65 Pontiac as he crossed a railroad track.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at January 02, 2016 11:32 PM (ZxmMG)

Now that recalls a funny story! I was living in Calgary at the time, and was on my way to view the show and shine at Three Hills, Alberta, a car show of long standing. Driving my old '64 Studebaker Wagonaire, with a 259 V9 which had a Carter WCFB carb on it (should have had AFB, but I digress). I was headed down a grade into the Kneehill Creek coulee on Highway 21, and some young punks in a 5-liter Mustang tried to pass me, on a double solid line. There was no oncoming traffic, so I matted the accelerator. Those kids never knew that a '64 station wagon would go 105 mph, or that it would get there so fast. Truth be told, neither did I. The other thing I didn't know was the carburetor had been put together wrong, and the secondary throttle plates had snagged the secondary air valve plates, and the carb was stuck wide open. Stuck tight. Stomping and pulling on the gas pedal did...nothing. I walked away from the Mustang, and kept on accelerating up the hill on the other side of the coulee. I was beginning to get worried about going too fast. Would time dilation kick in?

I did the only thing I could do, and shut off the ignition. So I slowed down, quite abruptly. And the Mustang began to catch up to me. Can't have that, can we? So I switched it back on. Huge double report as both mufflers exploded, and a large cloud of debris, rust, and soot appeared in my rear-view mirror, and vanished again almost at once. I reached the top of the hill, and shut off the ignition again, and pulled into a pull-out bay at the Carbon corner. The kids in the Mustang rolled on past. I popped the hood, and it took some hammering on the carb linkage to free the jam.

I rebuilt the carb properly not long afterward, and put on a set of glass-pack mufflers and a full set of stainless-steel pipes. Still a sweet-sounding engine, too, and I still have that car.

I predict a sort of low-grade fever sort of insurgency. There will be de facto no-go zones in certain areas, though fedgov will, from time to time, make a show of force in them, but by and large and in the main, status quo for most of the country.

Yup.

But the point of this discussion, which seems to have been lost, is that obama's pushed things to the point (and frankly its where we've been headed for a long time) where someone is going to start it *without any input from any of us*. So the actual important question is how do the rest of us who will be declared terrorists regardless of our action choose to react.

And even that's optimistic. If obama's the nightmare many have been warning about for nigh a decade now, he may well initiate it without any provocation from folks nominally 'on our side'. The same question stands.

You know if you get on the boxcar, you and your family die.

My plan is to wait it out, if possible. Talking with my friends who lived behind the Iron Curtain, there's no other way. Anything like rebellion or insurrection leads to bloodshed.

"Scared," he said, "But my wife and children needed me. I did what I had to do."

More than this, History shows we cannot expect.

Anatoli Davidovitch, may his memory be a blessing, told me of a man who unraveled thread from his uniform and from bits and pieces of fabric for months.

At night, chained by the leg to the bed in his barracks, he twisted the threads into cord, braided the cord into rope, and after a while, had enough rope to hang himself.

He waited until May Day to do it.

Nothing changed, but he affirmed his humanity and freedom in that final act. It wasn't futile - a witness told me, and I'm telling you, and so his act echoes down the ages.

Arkie Shipley released "Hot Rod Race" way way way back in 1950. That's 5-0.

It became such a legendary cult classic that an entire decade passed before someone dared to finally made a "response song" -- an interesting twist, the same exact race but now described from the point of view of the opponent in the original song. That new song from 1960 was by Charlie Ryan and was called "Hot Rod Lincoln," and became a bigger hit than the original it was riffing on.

Finally, 12 years later, the Lost Planet Airmen made a nostalgic cover version of that response song -- and introduced it to a new generation of kids who never even knew it was a cover version with a long long lineage.

Frankly, the Charlie Ryan version is way better.

zombie, the link I posted is an excerpt, I think, from an article in, IIRC, Car Craft magazine, from the 1980's. They did an interview with Charlie Ryan, and photos of his car. He really did have a Lincoln hot rod with a Model A body. And there really was an incident, where he got into a road race with a Cadillac. He and his band-mates were returning to Washington State from a gig in Clarkston, Idaho. There is a long, winding hill on that highway. I've driven it, and it is memorable. That's what prompted the song, according to Charlie Ryan. He used "Grapevine Hill" for the song, because it's in California, and much better known to hot rod culture than the obscure hill in Idaho.

All the kids in San Pedro always knew that the song's original composer was not from the area because he mistakenly pronounces it "San PAY-dro" in the song -- which is the way it is supposed to be pronounced in the original Spanish of course, but is NOT how the city's name is pronounced by its actual residents, all of whom (including the Mexicans) universally pronounce it "San PEE-dro."

The fact that Charlie Ryan says "Pulled out of San PAY-dro" was the giveaway that he was not from LA, and thus the race in the song must have actually taken place somewhere else!

Charles Wright & the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band

(nine words)

...and the longest name of any band from any country is

African Dance Band of the Cold Storage Commission of Southern Rhodesia

(11 words)

(both in comments by yours truly).

Unless someone can top either one of those, or point out a longer name I missed above, I declare them the winners!

894 Evening roonz and roonettez...or morning rather, I guess. My last day of vacation has come to an end, tonight I'm back to work. I won't take another vacation day until July.

On our vacation we covered 11 states and visited both families. Mrs Hades was well received by her inlaws, which was a pleasant surprise for her but no surprise at all for me. We got a little snow in Iowa (but not for Christmas) and left before the big storm hit. We came home to constant rain and a leaky roof, yay us.

Mrs Hades had her birthday yesterday (Saturday) so at her direction we did absolutely nothing except watch Harry Potter movies. I have now seen all of them.

Santa Claus brought me a Digital Command Control set for my trains, I only have two locomotives out of many that can use it but it's fun to watch two locomotives creep away from each other at a scale 3mph on the same track. I'll have to work on a couple of turnouts but I think DCC is here to stay on GGE Rail.

And that's my week in a nutshell.

Amazing how a chick could break all those men's records. If I didn't know better, I'd think she was on steroids.

957 Shit! The balloon must've gone up while I was in the john. I'll grab another beer and head for the rallying point.

958 Just curious - Have you met your in-laws yet? Were they OK with you wearing the skirt?

960 @94 Prince Ludwig the #Problematic

I left HS in 87' and had some old teachers hanging on to retire teach most of my classes. In reflection I was lucky. The young female teachers coming in were dumber than bricks and some of their students would correct them during class. Painful to watch, but we were all marking time to get out of there.
