"I wonder if any Military guys in 1983 started calling folks asking if
the Russkies had any of these AT-AT things and why the hell are we so far behind." I swear it that was one of the pencil sketches in the 1985 edition of the Pentagon's _Soviet Military Power_. That publication sometimes got it wrong factually, but it was dedicated to the proposition that if you might have to fight a hostile superpower, you damn well better try to develop some idea of its capabilities and weapons systems first off. Contrast to today. There ought to be twin editions of _Russian Military Power_ and _Chinese Military Power_, to make it clear what might be faced in combat in the near future. Instead, the DoD's internal publishing arms now crank out endless copies of pamphlets on the evils of sexual harassment in the ranks, and on the power of diversity to overcome all. My first dog LOVED snow. It was playtime and a delicious treat all in one. He'd happily bound through snow that came up to his shoulder and come running back looking pleased as hell. The fact that he had long, dense hair (so much so that we got him shaved down for summer) meant that winter was his favorite time of the year. What he HATED was getting wet. Loathed baths, didn't even like going for walks when it was dewy.
The current dog is slimmer and has much shorter hair. She's not so keen on snow. But she will cheerfully run through any water you let her get at. Dogs are funny. Posted by: Trimegistus at January 01, 2016 10:24 PM (k+K+t) 163

Delving deep into geekery here:
It's worth noting that the Stormtroopers' worst shooting occurs in the original Star Wars, roughly from the prison breakout to the heroes' escape from the Death Star. You know, the escape Vader and Tarkin wanted to happen. In Empire, they're pretty damned effective in the battle of Hoth. On Bespin they actually manage to blow Threepio to bits, which means they can even hit a named character with lines! Later on they get royally suckered by the Cloud City cops, though, and can't shoot the heroes at the landing pad (though Artoo does lay down some countermeasures). It's in Return that they really fall apart. Maybe the Empire's training regimen was going downhill. Kreplach, yes, it's unbelievable. An entry/exit accounting system was easily do-able even before 9/11. After, I believe such a system was planned. Once passports and associated guvamint immigration/border functions were digitized, it really was as simple as anything one could imagine.
Not a serious country, but you knew that. The confusion arises because the legacy and "inertia" of the country are more impressive than the history of any other. Thinking on the letter B, Stanislav Lem wrote a short story about a machine that could create anything that started with the letter N.
The professor that invented it asked it to create Natron, since that was the Latin term for Sodium, and the machine replied with aspertity that it only created things that started with N, not everything that might start with the letter N in some other language, since then it would be the machine that would create virtually everything. Later another scientist tried to get it to make nothing, which it did, making huge swatches of nothing through out the universe, until they turned it off and then mourned because it wiped out very beautiful and useful items that did not start with the letter N, and so they could not be replaced. Posted by: Anna Puma at January 01, 2016 11:16 PM (OEWRk) Keep most of the bridges, kill the approaches. The Golden Gate is an amazing and highly resiliant structure -- the roads getting on or off of it, not so much. The Bay Bridge has crap approaches to the double-suspension bridge to Treasure Island, a good attachment to Treasure Island, then the nouveau modern suspension bridge to Oakland used the wrong bolts and they're half rusted through already despite being less than a decade old -- you can shear the bolts and drop the whole deck into the briny. You can take any ferries in dock when the quake hit and beat them to death against the dock. Same with tourist boats -- but have the ones that were actually in transit survive. Definitely let the zoo loose. And add a bunch of "only in SF" stuff. Like there being surprisingly little damage to Market Street, but it's impassable because people there are having a giant drum circle. Protesters fill the area near City Hall wanting to know what will be given to them for having to deal with the mess. Nudists are demanding open carry to protect their houses from looters, while would-be looters are demanding police escorts to protect them from "gun nuts". Have a bicycle messenger killed by a freak 16-story drop of a 250-pound stone ornament off of the facade of an older building. Oh, have the brakes fail on the cars parked on their ridiculously steep hills, piling up in intersections at the bottoms -- maybe shake extras out of the garages. So I just bought "2010: Arthur C Clarke Needs More Money For Rent Bois" on DVD, used. First time in 30 years. Now I know why I'd waited this long...
The Kubrick vision was a terrifying exploration of how inhospitable and alien outer-space is. When stuff goes wrong, like HAL went wrong, you might not know the reason; it's just wrong and you have to find some way to survive around it or fix it. If alien life shows up, it is (probably) incomprehensible to our chilled monkey brains. "2012" said, screw all that, let's explain HAL's malfunction as a bug introduced by the Cold War. Let's (somehow) fly a manned spaceship well into Jupiter's near-stellar-level magnetic field without all the onboard electronics going bzzt. (BTW, the fact that Jupiter is almost a star turns out to be the main plot of the story.) At the end of it, I did end up rooting for America and the Soviets to join together, so on that much, success. 2010 blows chunks as a movie because Peter Hyams decided to make it so topical that now it is impossible watch because it is so dated. Whereas 2001 is a timeless tale of Man vs Himself and his Environment which in this case is HAL. Posted by: Anna Puma at January 01, 2016 11:40 PM (OEWRk) 385

What really drove me crazy about 2010 right away was, it's RIDICULOUSLY talky. Peter Hyams completely fails to understand what Kubrick knew instinctively: great movies, especially grand space epics, should rely on the power of the *images,* not the endless expositionary dialogue of the actors. --- I think it succeeded because Kubrick made everything look like a chilly Chesley Bonestall painting, and his color palette was cool greys, black, and white punctuated by bright red. The camera was always at a distance, observing, just like HAL. The second film was shot like a t.v. show, up close and personal. With Kubrick, even the close ups were clinical. Yeah, there's something about the innate pessimism of Mets fans. Unfortunately we share a city with a team that's won 27 WS so it's always hard to find the sunny side of life. I mean look at the horrendous offseason so far. We lose Cespedas and Murphy and replace them with nothing. No pop, no speed, no high average or OBP players. Looks lie if we're going to win its going to be 1-0 or 2-1 and pray our bullpen doesn't blow it. Posted by: Kreplach at January 01, 2016 11:44 PM (WVvzl) 403

Cthulhu, thanks. I am printing all that out. 2010 blows chunks as a movie because Peter Hyams decided to make it so topical that now it is impossible watch because it is so dated. Whereas 2001 is a timeless tale of Man vs Himself and his Environment which in this case is HAL. Posted by: Anna Puma at January 01, 2016 11:40 PM (OEWRk) Oh, and one particularly clever way to get off the Peninsula when all seems lost might be a railroad bridge. bth, kudos to you for getting through 2010. I couldn't.
Posted by: qdpsteve at January 01, 2016 11:41 PM Show. Don't tell. There's none of that in 2010. It's not just the yak yak yak... There's a real clunky and ham fisted approach to shooting scenes and shots. It fails to convey the majesty and awe of 2001... it looks... cheap. Blame the budget, maybe for a lot of that, but, that's no excuse for the mostly Lucas grade pedestrian shots during scenes. Posted by: otho at January 01, 2016 11:46 PM (EWg9n) 407

So, if she's still around -- here's a pic -- http://www.foundsf.org/index.php? title=Fileresidio$golden-gate-bridge -south-end.jpg The space to the right of the tower, where you can see the suspension cable over the bridge deck, may be the last piece of California standing after everything else gets shaken to death. The space between the two towers has good trusswork and will probably still stand (if the towers do), and flies the bridge directly over the low building (Fort Point). Then, again, the same deferred maintenance clowns that screw up everything else have had their ways with it for a while -- Blanco suggests a deck collapse, with cars stacking up in the Fort Point courtyard. The area to the left of the two towers is just crap design and crap construction and may fall down some random day without an earthquake. Posted by: cthulhu at January 02, 2016 12:02 AM (EzgxV) 453

Every useless asshole in the country will thunder there in no time. If I were living in a small town paradise, and some shithead reporter showed up to put the town "on the map," I'd kill him and bury him in the backyard, and consider that I'd done my civic duty. Start with a bit more action so the audience can tell what kind of person he is along with his Flatland FNG partner. So I'm a very bad sports fan. Loved several big sports all my life, but for years now just can't make the effort to follow any of them seriously. College football has always been good (was lucky to see the entire Coryell era at SD State, when the game was changed forever).
So I figured I'd catch a little college ball at its best - top bowl games (now actually a sort of limited playoff). Even though the Orange on Dec. 31 and the Sugar being last on Jan. 1 instead of first still seems very wrong. Uh huh. Wow. Up side is commitment was minimal, turned out a quarter or so of all but the Clemson game was enough. Otherwise, three traditional Super Bowl-type games (i.e. boring and lop-sided). I should note that, in keeping with our annual New Years' tradition, we spent the afternoon doing a "TRG". There is a local day spa where we can relax in a nice hot tub with attached steam room (and cold plunge, which we use to splash our faces and store our water bottles) and shower for one hour. Then, we move on to deep-tissue massages to get the kinks out. After our massages, we go out to a nice dinner. Being heathens, we refer to this as the "Tub, Rub, and Grub" plan -- thus, TRG.

Slap actually I didn't invest any time, part of my point. Sort of watched Clemson game (half at a cigar shop, outside), thenparts of the first quarters of the other three - might have checked in on Alabama's blowout in the 2nd just to make sure it was what it looked like.
Won't go out of my way to see the final, but will probably check it early on to see if it's much of a game. Posted by: rhomboid at January 02, 2016 12:59 AM (QDnY+) 568

Yeah Jay I still play hockey, but probably can no longer name more than 3 or 4 NHL players. Remember one time going in a hockey store in suburban DC to get my skates sharpened, noticing an unfamiliar jersey hanging near the counter, and asking which team that was. The owner sort of glared at me - "North Carolina, Hurricanes". Me: North Carolina has an NHL team?? (I really didn't know that) He shook his head in playful disgust. This was back when I was playing 2 or 3 times a week, and teaching adult beginners.

Happy New Years fellow morons,
Does anybody have any use for or know of anybody that could use a slightly used B-767 captain? Seems that my former employer decided that while I was out on unpaid sick leave and that I became unqualified while I was out with pneumonia they let me go. Did I mention they owe me over $7500 in unpaid per diem and expenses...and what must be totally unrelated that I cancelled a flight in Saipan because of fuel leaks... And less than 1 week later another of their planes caught on fire in FLL. Do Not Fly Dynamic Airways. Not a disgruntled ex employee, just a professional captain that the safety of my passengers is the number one priority. Posted by: Alf767 at January 02, 2016 01:07 AM (VtSj9) 579

Yeah but that ewok wasn't shot by a stormtrooper with a blaster. It was blasted by an AT-ST.
Posted by: CDR M at January 01, 2016 09:51 PM (SCx0h) You know, I'm getting sick of people getting happy when a stormtrooper is killed. Don't people know that he doesn't want to really be there because you know he has a family back home that he wants to get back and see, but those filthy rebels keep making him get deployed to some 3rd planet shithole to deal with them. And it was next to impossible to crown a national champion in football until the BCS because almost every conference had a bowl tie-in, and they couldn't get out of them. Southwest Conference Cotton Bowl Big 8 Orange Bowl SEC Sugar Bowl Big 10/Pac 8/10 Rose Bowl Those were the bowls that had the big payouts and played on New Year's Day. Then, in the 80's Penn St and Miami were ranked 1 & 2 and were probably going to different bowls because the payouts to the NYD 4 bowls were so much more than any other bowl, it would have made no financial sense to play in any other bowls. However, the Fiesta Bowl came calling and promised the two schools a payout equal to the Orange, Sugar or Cotton Bowls. Both schools jumped at it, played the game on the 2nd, and the Fiesta Bowl became one of the "Big 4" bowls when the SWC and Big 8 became the Big12 and dumped the Cotton Bowl for its champion. Since that time, the bowls worked together (sans Rose) to try to crown a national champ. crazy dude get on the trolley, take a seat, holler and scream at the top of his lungs for the whole long ride, and no one bats an eye. It is a filthy zoo of a city." My favorite SF mass transit stories have to do when the cars get routed back to the car barn well after dark, when the system is shutting down for the night, and the cleaning crews start working through, and in one car they find a dearly-departed wino or junkie in one of the seats, and it's clear from the state of rigor mortis and fragrant sniffis that the decedent has been riding the rails for most of the day, stone cold dead, with dozens of people in turn sitting right next to him, and no one noticing or saying anything. Posted by: Jay Guevara at January 02, 2016 12:51 AM (oKE6c) It'd be nice if it were wrapped-up in a bow the way "Frankfurt School" supposedly explains why Chicago is such a corrupt Marxist shithole....except that the Frankfurt School only got there in the 1950's, after pulling out of their earlier late-30's Hollywood digs (partially because of the blacklist) after their first attempt in North America, NY (Columbia). How this explains the Chicago Haymarket Riots of 1886, I don't know. I can, however, point to the fact that the hapless United Nations established its charter in San Francisco in 1945. Since we dined out tonight, I had ample opportunity to shamelessly eavesdrop on neighboring tables. One young lady was talking about attending an event where all of her favorite authors would be signing things....which sounds so immensely wrong to me. The great majority of my favorite authors are dead, because I look for great writing across the entire western canon. The utter vacuity of someone who only knows of authors now breathing is mind-boggling.

-On a serious note, you nailed the Bowl Idiotship Series' 'pre-today' stupidity To a Fucking Tee!
They were tied to a Bowl Game! It was an incestuous system, but it paid well. The worst part? You could never have a National Champion! People that talk about this system being "stupid" hadn't lived and learned through the previous "system". They have no idea what they are talking about. As an Ohio State fan, though? They shouldn't have been one of the Final Four last year. ...even though the selection was ultimately vindicated through a National Championship. Posted by: Slapweasel (Cold1), (T) at January 02, 2016 01:32 AM (OQ9R7) I shake my head at the people that say the playoffs should have 8 teams. 4 teams is the sweet spot. In any given season, the top 2 teams are usually head and shoulders above everyone else, and in the odd season, you may get 3-4 teams, but never more than that. This season, Clemson and Alabama proved they were much better than everyone else the whole season, and OU/MSU earned their spots by winning some come from behind wins. Iowa and Notre Dame proved they should not have been in an 8 team playoff, and Stanford losing two regular season games (one to Northwestern and one to Oregon) meant that they shouldn't have been in the playoff because it is a season long championship. At 16 games, then OKState, UNC, FSU, and Northwestern all get in the playoffs. All got trucked by lower ranked teams. Marie Holmes, of Shallotte, North Carolina, bailed her live-in boyfriend, 31-year-old Hot Sauce, out of jail for the third time since March early Friday morning after posting his $12 million bond following an arrest for violating a pre-trial release agreement for prior heroin-related charges. She posted McDow's $3million bail in March, after he had been in jail since 2014 on heroin-trafficking charges. In August, she posted his $6million bail after he was cited during a raid in July. The bonds are skyrocketing because the amount doubles if a defendant breaks pre-trial release rules. The non-refundable fee paid to bailbondsmen is at least seven per cent, which for Holmes, hits about $1,470,000. Daily Mail

You wanna know what pisses me the fuck off?
My friends, and they are my friends, at the new years eve party last night, were planning to go out tonight to Canton. I didn't say anything, I was on the periphery of their conversation, but they never asked me if I wanted to go with them. Look, I know I'm 20 years older than they are. And I spent a lot of time and angst to get to the place where I am now, completely comfortable with myself and my life. A bunch of 30 year olds getting drunk because WHOO HOO isn't really my thing, I've been there and done that, decades ago. I might have said yes just because it's fun to be with them when they're like that, like I said, they ARE friends. I might have declined. Still, I would have liked to have been asked, y'know? I spent years of my life learning how to be comfortable with myself, healthily. Now that I have, though, it seems my perceived equanimity of not NEEDING others around to validate me is biting me in the ass. Sometime, I'd like it if they asked me to go be stupid. I might even say yes. I just irks me. Posted by: Weirddave at January 02, 2016 04:24 AM (N8hFs) 692

I thank you for the compliment, saying "20 some years ago" would make me 21.
My friends are at least a decade older than 21 with kids of their own. But if I were 21, and if the old fart me was as cool as I am, then you're damn skippy. What could be better than hanging out with me? Not much. Posted by: Weirddave at January 02, 2016 05:11 AM (N8hFs) 694
It just HURT MY FEELINGS. If I thought HURT MY FEELINGS mattered for a pitcher of spit, I'd be a SJW stalwart. Here I'm just bitching.

Posted by: Weirddave ---------------- Hangin' out with Gingy? You'd think so, but no. I'm a lot more fun. She just....knits all the time. If your idea of a god time is worsted wool and dying quandaries then she's your huckleberry. Posted by: Weirddave at January 02, 2016 05:32 AM (N8hFs) 697
Yeah, just throwing out some snark.
But good luck with the hurt feelings. As you know, that a buck fifty will get get you a cup of coffee at 7-11. Posted by: Chi at January 02, 2016 05:43 AM (UICf+) 698
