I think when you listen to NFL insidery types you get the distinct impression Chip isn't very popular with much of anyone in the NFL ol' boys network.
Some of these hothead college coaches come to the NFL and get their hats handed to them, or they have marginal success, and the league will more or less be somewhat forgiving. Give the guy a second chance to get that college game out of their systems, maybe take the role of coordinator somewhere to relearn what they didn't learn the first time.
Kelly came in acting like he invented the game, and the insider types were just waiting (and expecting) for him to fail. I think he won't ever see another NFL job.

It's fine to hold on to some last shred of hope, but don't count on either of those politicians to accomplish it, if if they were to get elected and even wanted to follow through, suddenly congress would find it's role in the process again and block them at every step - less they too were all fired at pretty much the same time and that never happens. The pitch forks are literally going to have to come out, they do have any healthy fear or respect for the governed, that's at the root of the problem.

Some of these hothead college coaches come to the NFL and get their hats handed to them, or they have marginal success, and the league will more or less be somewhat forgiving. Give the guy a second chance to get that college game out of their systems, maybe take the role of coordinator somewhere to relearn what they didn't learn the first time.
Kelly came in acting like he invented the game, and the insider types were just waiting (and expecting) for him to fail. I think he won't ever see another NFL job.

Probably quite similar to many college coaches and their baptism by prima donna pros' not listening to them the way college players do.
Same was said about Harbaugh in San Franny. Harbaugh is back at college. The difference with Chip is not just that he treats players like college kids, he treats the game itself like the college game. It just isn't.
It might have worked for a short while, because other teams aren't expecting it, but his scheme is not all that complicated, and once other teams figured out what he does, they had a way to defend it.

I actually looked into this recently...

You're right, seen so many in the blog-o-sphere get all excited by Issa or Gowdy and their 'hearings' on this or that. In and of them that's fine, but nothing ever much comes of them, nearly nobody even every get fired let alone pinned downed to be prosecuted. It is creepy when you know someone and you find out they have disgusting kiddie porn on their computer. This happened at a job I worked at, coworker went on this guys computer for something and he had a ton of stuff, with 8 year olds or so. Sick.

Once upon a time I thought I was on my way to being a real computer nerd. Some of my online friends went the linux route, and I figure many of them are happy with the choice. I more or less surrendered to the borg, let Windoze dictate more and more and more of the process, and have since forgotten too much to really know how to find my way back.
Maybe I'll do just that. I used to threaten to join the Mac cult, but it's too late for that now. Of that I am sure.

It's weird. I used to think I retained most of the knowledge I acquired over the years, but I've found that there are aspects of computer usage that I've lost, and I don't think I'll ever get it back. Mostly because I just don't care all that much.

On my Mac laptop I have Win7, Win 10, several distros of Linux and some testing VMs.
You definantely pay a lot more but you get a lot more for your money.
The thing that sucks is Apple has gone to a non user upgradeable hardware model but most of the other manufacturers are going that route anyway.

Being in IT, over the years I've had to deal with two cases of this, one was clear and unmistakable for what it was and I was the person who came across it and turned the person in, I don't know if the police ever got involved, but that person did not work at the company the following day and I was instructed to not add to the rumor mill about it, but once again to send out a reminder about people not having personal sh1t on company gear. That was during the late 90's.
The second was mid 2000's brought to me by one of the helpdesk folks who came across something she considered CP, and of course as luck would _not_ have it, it was the CEO's laptop. Pics of some kids doing gymnastics, and mostly same kids at a pool, other seemingly random pics of some other kids, some fully clothed some in swimsuits. Also it was the second time we found links to escort sites on his laptop (first time we just removed without saying anything). I basically got in a fight with the helpdesk person saying it's not CP, could be relatives (his own two kids were older 18+, one had interned with us), could be church group, outreach group I knew he was part of, friends kids, any number of things, though... of about 100 pics there seemed to be 30 or so that were not of the same group of kids. Anyway my tech wanted to go straight to the police, I basically told her fuck that, not for what we had in hand, if she felt compelled then to do so but I would not back her up what so ever. Said I'd take it to our CIO and HR along with the escort links, see if his expense report turns up anything questionable that might be escort related (none of our business imho unless he's using company funds), and I'll pass on the concern about the pics of kids even though nothing in the pics was illegal, just admittedly odd, told her just save an image of the HD, and re___ it clean and hand it back to him as scheduled.
I restore the disk imagine to a dupe laptop and went though it again, including restoring previously wiped files looking for 'more'. Didn't find jack, then brought it up the chain.
Our CIO couldn't wait to used this crap against the CEO because there were on-going office politics trying to force out this CEO at the time, which even I wanted to happen...but not with trumped up crap. Turns out nothing unusual in his expenses re the escort front and while our CIO totally was convinced that he was up to no good CP (thought I was nuts to think otherwise...as I thought he was nuts) wise HR saw it like I did, all they had is the guy storing fully legal photos on company assets, something frankly everyone in the company probably had to one degree or another, but she would ask him about it and go from there. Anyway a week later I was told by head of HR it was 'handled'. At which point I removed the image of the laptop retained on network storage. Couple days later the CIO (who I was also good friends with) came to me looking for the drive image. I asked what for cause HR said it was resolved, he said he was gonna package things up and forward them to board members anonymously. Things were never quite the same between us after that cause I told him I'd removed it, but if he wanted to he could go restore them from last weeks tapes, but that I was having no part in it because a) it wasn't CP and he knew it, b) the escort crap (if even real and he was indeed cheating) didn't include company funds\business and there was plenty of legit things to use against the guy, going dirty like that with innuendo was just low and could have lasting effects outside our company. I asked him again a few weeks after that if he ever did what he told me, he said no. CEO resigned three months later, rumors of these event persisted long after his departure, as did mysterious 'letters to the board'.
So maybe I was the douche in that situation, maybe I wasn't, but that, beyond various other stories in the news involving over-hyped 'CP', I don't immediately assume just cause someone or even leo uses the term that's it was actually CP till there is some level of detail to the story.

There really weren't other signs, the tech in question had been the person to find crap on his machine before (escort links, related adult pics in browser cache), so I think she was just sensitive to it all (which was odd cause she was far from prude) and some how in her minds pics of girls in swimsuits and gymnastics outfits = cp, to be fair the only strange part was that out of like 100 pics only 2 or 3 had boys in them. Even if he was really a closet pedo, didn't much matter to me cause there wasn't 'evidence' of it, and I knew about 1/3rd the company was on team 'lets oust the ceo', fk so was I, but like I said, I'll play dirty, but not outside-of-the-office dirty.
What's a little ironic about her concern not just the CP thing but him cheating on his wife, is a year later I caught her and another co-worker friend both cheating on their spouses with each other. sigh...

I've read that earthquakes tend to be localized in California due to all of the faults and fractures. They don't travel far.
A few years ago when the 5.something quake occurred in Virginia, it was felt all over the Northeast and Central Atlantic states. I felt it a couple hundred miles away in Pennsylvania. That's apparently because we don't have a lot of faults here, so a quake can travel farther.

The Wayne movie is a homage, of sorts, to a lot of characters played by Wayne (and he played an exaggerated version of himself as Rooster) and to the style of western that used to be made.
The Bridges (Coen) movie looks and feels more like the ornery drunken marshal that Cogburn was supposed to be. Bridges is a great actor, and can and has played some really great roles. Sometimes you don't even realize that it's Jeff Bridges playing Rooster Cogburn. It takes modern movies to make really stark and sometimes ugly realism, as the old movies were usually telling or selling a more attractive myth.
So yeah, the Coen Brothers "True Grit" was probably much more like the book, because they could afford to make harsh realism.

Not at all. It's just that they can be felt farther away from the source in the Northeast, even though they are mild by California standards. With all of the faults in California, they can be devastating locally, but aren't transmitted for long distances.

I found the book disturbing and ended my McCarthy reading over it. Or really, it pushed me over the edge. I was already annoyed at his minimalist narrative style.

Where I used to work they blocked facebook and twitter both. They also blocked a lot of sites deemed to be inappropriate. They blocked some politically incorrect sites including AmRen and some sites dedicated to firearms.

Casablanca had a fatalistic edge to it, no-one wanted to do the right thing, and they wound up doing it anyways. In a way it was the opposite of Noir, where no matter how they squirmed and feinted they wound up making good things happen.
A gritty film to me means people doing things they don't like to people they like even less. It would be the antithesis of Casablanca.

I walk in the office and the girls are hunched over their phones. But at least I'm not responsible for what everyone is doing. I also walk in and they are shopping. They change screens quickly. I'm not opposed to them looking at Facebook etc., as long as the work is getting done.

If you don't have too (ie you don't have compliance related communication rules to deal with) I would say in general don't unless you have issues. If your worried about shit like facebook just block access to everything but http\https and then either proxy their traffic (where you can block specific uri, or subscribe to lists\groups of things to block), or block it via deep packet inspection fw rules, though these days most SMB type firewalls come with such features in addition to the basic FW features. Another method on top of that is just using custom dns servers, so that things you don't want them going to will not resolve to ip's, there are free ones, and low cost subscription ones for that and their pretty darn effective to keep most people where you don't want them (opendns is one of those, there are others, cost will depend on your environment). Note that it's not going to be 100% effective there will some smart employees that will still find some site that isn't blocked that isn't on a block list that will then proxy their traffic to where they want (facebook...ace..where-ever)... but your average office drone isn't going to bother.
I prefer to let them to most places, the blocks we have in place are more about blocking malicious content\ads, or know rouge hosts that can attempt infections of people via their own surfing or social engineering that slips though email or chat system. But we know who's going where and how often... if we need to look, which is rare.

That's the think, you can do every thing you want to block people on your own network, but you can't really fight with people's phone using someone else's network while at work. Downside to the wireless world we live in, unless you're gonna get a cell signal blocker.
Had the same recently, someone brought in a YourKarma device for his and other people to use with their phones to avoid all the BS we put them though to touch our network with said 'personal' devices. Out side of "policy" you can only fight this sh1t so far these days.

I understood, also, that Joseph Campbell had a great influence on Geo Lucas, and Lucas influenced a lot of other filmmakers - if only because of his income - about plotting the hero-story that Campbell believed was basic to human stories. I was never convinced that was the only way to organize a plot. Can you imagine Rick being Gawain or Luke Skywalker? Rick wasn't looking for maturity, he wasn't trying to find his father, he wasn't undergoing trials to make him a man, he had done that and got beat up, and that was why he was in Casablanca in the first place.
He was looking for a reason that things were the way they were, and looking for something worth while to be.
So not only would Rick have to be grittier, and less meaningful in a remake, he would also be rootless and looking for something to make him into a real man.
That would make the movie into a travesty at best. It would turn it into Tropic Thunder in the Spanish Sahara at worst.
