Dec 29, 1943 - The EZ Dog Journals
Cold and clear. 34 Div in process of relieving 36 Div. Our artillery fire picked up considerably. Patrols tried to get into San Vittore. Were driven back by MG fire from slopes outside of town.
Went to V___'s battery tonight. Ate homemade candy and talked.

San Vittore = San Vittore del Lazio, a small village a couple miles further up the Liri Valley, about 6.5 miles from Monte Cassino. Once again possession of the high ground allowed the Germans to control the Allied rate of advance up the valley.

V___ was a close friend of my dad, I have anonymized the name.

43 Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

I like that.

It's all angsty and creepy at the same time.

Well damn... Up here on the banks of the Great Miami it has rained since Christmas Eve, but it was mainly all downhill... 129 there have been suggestions of filling the basement with water to keep the walls from collapsing inwards.
Around here with the clay and heavy rains it is not unheard of for empty in-ground cement swimming pools to heave up out of the ground or crack.
Contact a local contractor for advice, if you would be better off filling it with water to equalize the pressure.
I don't know if this is a good idea, and if you have a low mounted electrical panel all bets are off.

I would not recommend doing that.

You just need a way for the water to drain. Most pressure will be coming from under the slab, not from the walls.

The water usually comes in at the wall / floor crack.

If you have a good interior or exterior perimeter drain with a sump pump you should be fine.

Oh yeah, then all bets are off.

Unless you have a generator, which you should.

Although I know a lot of people who have gravity drains as primary or back up. The problem is, of course, that if it's a daylight drain, it will get clogged and animals will set up shop in the (relative) warmth of it in the winter.

If it goes to a dry well, it'll work great. Except during heavy rains, when the well fills up. Which is when you need it the most.

But yeah -- definitely recommend having sump pumps on a generator.

Maryland has a law making it illegal to buy a magazine with greater then ten round capacity, in Maryland.
