Overnight Open Thread (Christmas Edition)

Misanthropic Humanitarian has graciously provided tonight's ONT. Merry Christmas you morons!

Luke 2 King James Version (KJV)

2 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.

2 (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)

3 And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David)

5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.

6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered.

7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Leading up to Christmas is autumn. Depending where you are in the continuous 48, Alaska and Hawaii you might have leaf problems. Or in our case pine tree needle problems. Here's an ingenious father exposing his son to work while teaching him to use Moar power. Future 'ron?

Many of the Horde have pets. Have you ever thought about putting them to work at Christmas time? I think pets can lead the Moron lifestyle too.

Some of you travel over the river and through the woods to see Grandma & Grandpa at Christmas too. Did you ever think about that bridge and how it was built? I have always been fascinated by bridge construction. Had I only applied myself, right?

How many of you have a real Christmas tree up? Ever wonder how the trees get to market? High tech.

I use to live in an area that had numerous Xmas tree farms. It's a time consuming and labor intensive endeavor.

Looks like me as a child when I found out I didn't get the pet raccoon for Christmas that year. A pet raccoon is odd, don't you think? Did any of you Morons have odd pets as a child growing up? Did you receive any odd Christmas gifts? Have you ever given any odd Christmas presents? Did anyone forget the batteries this year?

Speaking of presents, I never had a BB gun. As a matter of fact I know 2 people who shot an eye out with a BB gun. My father thought it was safer for me to have a H&R 20 gauge single shot shotgun for a Christmas present when I was 12. Unfortunately, I lost that gun in a boating accident while duck hunting many years ago. How many here have received or given a BB gun for Christmas?

Do any of you folks celebrate the 12 days of Christmas? If you do, you must have a lot of time to shop. There are 364 gifts mentioned in "The Twelve Days of Christmas". That has to be true, I read it on the internet. Did you know that The Puritans forbade the singing of Christmas carols? Who knew today's Progressives were Puritans? Other interesting Christmas facts you can awe friends and family can be found here.

Wouldn't you rather discuss these than the benefits and blessings of Obama Care? OK, no more politics.

One of the traditions that my better half brought into our home is making my mother's recipe of fruit cake. This recipe is very close to Mom's. She uses brandy instead of rum and there are no cranberries in her recipe. I love fruit cake if it's done right.

Peace on earth good will toward cats.

Since it is still Christmas, how about some Christmas Carols, rock 'n roll style?

The NCAA & NFL are attempting to attract more women fans. Both organizations are marketing clothing for women. Get ready for this onslaught on TV in the upcoming weeks.

I'm guessing these folks were on Santa's Naughty List this year. Did they get coal? Not if President 4Putt and the EPA had their way.

Shop With A Trooper parent leaves Morehead Walmart in handcuffs. Not father of the year material.

15 I got a mouse for Christmas. As in, today. Whoo Hoo!

We aren't celebrating Christmas until on or around the 1st, when my parents and I will drive down to Chattanooga to get together with the rest of my family. I did go over to their house for lunch, which turned into staying the afternoon and watching a movie, and in the course of all this I, assisted by the rather laid-back cats and my parents, caught one of the mice that have gotten loose in my parents house. I took it back with me in a sealed bucket and released it in a field near my apartment.

22 Once upon a time I had connections to the Christmas tree harvest industry.
I discovered three things:
Helicopters are ideal for getting the trees out of the plantations because of the mud and problem with compaction,

I am terrified of being around those flying Cuisinarts of death, and

watching a chopper pilot pick up a slingloaded bundle of trees and pot it into the back of a truck makes me want to cheer every time.

89 So, my wife and I were sitting on the coach watching the CMA Christmas show on TV, my head on her lap, and the dog was laying next to us on her pad, when all of a sudden she jumps up and starts barking like crazy. Like someones breaking in or something. I get up and go to the door to check things out and the dog follows me - yeah, dog is always right behind me when something scary comes up. So, nothings there and I turn around and the dog is gone. Usually she sticks with me. I go back to the coach and the dog has jumped up onto the coach and taken my place. Sucker, she says.
Merry Christmas, ya morons...

97 I guess my block has carolers this year. I just heard them singing "Hark the Herald Angels Sing."

At my nearby Ralphs, there was an old woman, dark glasses, who *all month December* sat next to the entrance with her Salvation Army donation bell, singing Christmas carols.

At first I thought it was cute, but I admit I got a bit annoyed by it by the last time I saw her a few nights ago; it seemed to me like she was trying to guilt people into giving. At one point I was a tiny bit tempted to walk past her yell/singing, "DIRTY DEEDS DONE DIRT CHEAP!!"

Glad I decided not to...

98 I got willowed in the last thread:

SpaceX has moved the recovered Falcon 9 first stage to their brand spanking new processing facility at Launch Complex 39A, one of the two most famous launch pads in the world.

https://tinyurl.com/oudn9s6

If that structure at the left edge of the photo looks familiar, it's because it was the launch tower used for 80 Shuttle launches. Before that, LC-39A was the site of all but one of the Saturn V moon launches. SpaceX has leased the facility from NASA, and they have been busy modifying it for their own future needs.

132 rickl, as totally awesome as the Dragon recovery was, there are still going to be questions. It costs about $20 million to build the booster and about $200,000 to fuel it. SpaceX has already said that that particular booster won't be used again. I would imagine that they will take it apart to see what kind of stresses were applied to that rocket.
If they can determine that they can reuse a booster, imagine how much money the could save. Even if it cost them $1 million to refurbish the booster, they would be $19 million ahead. It gets even better if they can reuse it multiple times.

Yeah, the only way to find out is to recover stages, then test and study them. Monday night's landing was a crucial first step.

I'm sure that they'll find that some parts are fine, while others will need refurbishing or replacement. Then they will focus on beefing up or redesigning the problematic parts.

This particular stage is not going to be reflown, but they plan to do a static test fire at LC-39A.

204 Hi SMFH Congrats on your Raiders

Posted by: chemjeff at December 25, 2015 11:28 PM (uZNvH)

205 Okay, looks like just about everyone's here. Time to share my story from last night. When I was growing up, and right up until a few years ago (at least from what I understand), at the Lutheran church I've always attended, Communion was:

- A very small glass of red wine or juice.
- A very thin, very small bread wafer.

Well, for the first time in years, I went back to this church last night with family, for their Christmas Eve service. And it turned out, they included Communion.

First of all, at our church, they used to have to you go right up to the kneeling rails, only about 8 feet in front of the back wall where our cross is. Well, they've changed that, ostensibly because of California disabled access rules; now they set up a little desk in front of the middle aisle, and people walk up to that and get their bread/wine.

Okay fine. So I go up, after my sister has already gone up, and:

- They're tearing tiny pieces of bread off an actual loaf now.
- The assistant pastor was holding*one big goblet* of wine in his left hand, a goblet of white grape juice in his right. No tiny individual glasses.

Well, I have a long backstory with my family and this church; the super-short version is, whenever I made any sort of social mistake, my Mom and Dad would declare themselves embarrassed, then come down on me with the Hammer of Thor. I simply *was not allowed* to make mistakes when I was a kid in church. Didn't matter if I meant to make them or not; ; I spent a lot of Sunday afternoons having to sit in a chair in the corner for mistakes I made. Frustrating, angering and other psycho stuff, to say the least.

So to this day, this church has MAJOR baggage for me. And Communion is part of that; I was taught, get in, get out, be done with it, don't hold up the line. Except I had never seen bread from a loaf, or wine in a great big chalice.

So I popped my bread on the roof of my mouth (like I was always told and taught to do), and then when the chalice came up... I had no idea what to do and had to think on my feet.

So what choice did I make? I took it from the pastor's hand, put it up to my mouth and took a tiny gulp.

Oh boy. My mom did not notice. But my sister (this is my sane sister btw, and thankfully she's not like my Mom and has a sense of humor about these things) noticed and was laughing (silently of course, this was in church). "You're supposed to DIP the bread in the WINE!" she admonished.

I was so, so embarased. For me it was 1978 all over again.

Well, again, thankfully, my Mom and sister have healthier attitudes about this stuff now. But oh boy, I felt as if I had ruined the ceremony or contaminated the chalice... anyway, they were quite understanding. (And they know I have baggage about the church).

The funniest part was when my bro-in-law (this sister's husband) about it. He also told *his* dad. "No problem," bro-in-law's dad said, "next year bring a straw." That made me laugh. "Maybe I should bring a crazy straw," I suggested.

And we had a good laugh. But oh boy.

(Oh, and my sister also said, "they probably just thought you're Catholic.")

;-)

And sorry, for wall of text. Just had to provide context.

I own half of a Taxi company, and have very recently done a Cab to Uber comparison. We had to do it by mile driven rather than per hour. The taxi guy made about 40 percent more, gross, than the Uber guy.

Now, to your question: I wish I could answer it, but can't. Stats are all over the place. One needs to look at all costs, insurance, licensing and add all that into a per mile/hour cost before an hourly pre tax number can be assigned.

Main complaint I get from Uber drivers who want to drive a Cab is that the field is saturated with drivers and the only people making money on Uber is Uber.

267 If you are an Uber driver do you have to have a public passenger chauffeur license? Do you have to have special insurance?
Posted by: Bertram Cabot Jr. at December 25, 2015 11:50 PM (FkBIv)

******

As of 10/1/15 here in GA, anyone who drives anyone anywhere for $ needs to have a Chauffer designation on their license and pay for Vehicle for Hire Insurance, typically 4x cost of private car insurance, if you want to run legally.

I would guess that 80-90% of Uber drivers are not, because they are not subject to much scrutiny as they are just a private car.

Posted by: CaliGirl at December 25, 2015 11:56 PM (BHl9S)

Jumping in here. BB had to be a bit vague about the chemistry, but they did mention a few things and get them right. There is a reduction step in the synthesis and they do mention a reducing agent, for example. Where the chemistry gets shaky is in their depiction of scale-up and process control. A chemist would notice the lack of certain things such as a liquid chromatograph.

Merry Christmas, Horde!

O, Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we receive eternal life.

I ask this year that I find myself within those words. Might my wit and wisdom be used to gather, rather than chide and repel.

Bless you all and thank you for your wit and wisdom.

Used to work for a large company that prides itself on its product development. (I worked in production plant)

One of the development labs was close to our plant, and occasionally they would bring samples to us to run - even after we were sold off.

It seems that the development guys didn't actually have any of the testing equipment (GC's , LC's etc) and policy was for them to make a test run then send samples to separate facility for analysis. Sometimes it would be over a month before they got their results back.

I've roleplayed this as a student, and observed it a dozen times by now, but you're still reading from a wallet card checklist, scared shitless of a blunder that might add to the pain of the kin or the staff. No landmines this time. Nurses tell me I was fine, and it's otherwise slow, so I'm sent off early for my nap.

It is a necessary function, and you are stepping up to do your part. It sounds like you took the responsibility seriously and performed well -- remember that when going forward, for accomplishment builds on accomplishment.

But remember....the hardest part of the whole deal was done by the patient.

I would think over a long period of time the likelihood of a full moon on any given calendar date would have to be one in (roughly) twenty nine.

The lengthy periods between Christmas full moons (or again any other particular date) is due to the oddities of our calendar.

It's not you or the other 'rons or 'ettes, it's not the scenery or natural resources; it's not the climate or even the earthquakes and fires -- it's the progressive totalitarian statist assholes (BIRM) who insist you must be made to care every damned second of every damned day.

It started getting to me so much that I went to NC when the fiancee had work assignments there.....and when I went into Home Depot in NC, a substantial number of the products had "Not for sale in California" stencilled on the box. When I got my 1979 Mustang, I had to get a suckwad engine that had been discontinued in prior years in the other 49 states -- but was still being sold in California because it had been certified for smog by the incredibly inept CARB. We're in a drought, millionaires and politicians (BIRM) are still watering private putting-greens, but every other citizen is supposed to live in a house with unflushed low-flow toilets and bathe every-other Thursday -- while we're stuffed-to-the-gills with illegal immigrants on welfare who have already been deported multiple times due to their criminal behavior.

But today, of all days, I need to turn away from such distractions and remember that it's Christmas.

Yeah, it's the same sort of thing with blue moons (at least I think that's the one with two full moons in a calendar month). It can't happen in February (even in a leap year since the lunar period is 29 and a quarter or a half days) and has roughly a 1/29 chance of occurring in 30 day months, or 2/29 in 31 day months. However that works out it's about once every year and a half, but because of the calendar it might be longer or shorter (we recently had what was it? 4 in 2 years?).

416 And for some skimming amongst the posts, I'm sorry I wasn't here to offer posted prayers for others who could use them.

Know that I after I thank God for all of my gifts from Him, I ask that others find Him and gain knowledge and comfort from The Word.

If someone could let Nip Sip know that I have relinquished my petty grievances against him, I would appreciate it.

I chided him personally the other night and I am ashamed of myself for it.

Now is the time for forgiveness, as God instructs. This is not an emotional plea. It is simply a reminder that we allow ourselves honor as we give to others.

I do not believe that God speaks through me. I am simply mimicking my beloved examples of humanity.

Might God find you tonight, and find you well.

Thank you Ace and thank you horde, for your Shining City on a Hill.

Any fun stories of run ins with family?

Posted by: RWC - Team BOHICA at December 26, 2015 12:24 AM (hlMPp)

Oh yeah. Dickhead brother in law. Last year at Thanksgiving he calls us about 15 minutes before everyone was supposed to arrive and told us he was running a little late and needed to shower before coming over. We waited 2 hours for him to arrive, and he never showed. Mother in law and father in law both call him and he never answers. At the time he was seperated from his wife, but we found out he was over there. (They seperate every 3 months or so)
Christmas Eve afternoon he texts the Mrs and tells her how much he is looking forward to coming over for dinner. MIL and FIL arrive and we wait another 2 hours for him to show up. Doesn't answer any phone calls, but at 10pm texts the Mrs to tell her that he fell asleep. We are 99% sure that he spent the evening with his wife that he is once again separated from. Of course, he always seems to be needed by her when she or one of her kids (his stepkids) need a new car that he can cash his 401K in for.
Did I mention that the wife's parents are in poor health and in their 80's?
Fuck him.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was already illegal -- everything is enforced in such a random and capricious manner, it's obvious that kowtowing to political nobility is what really counts.

That said, it is truly amazing what you can get in inflatable yard stuff for various seasons. People around the corner have a 9' inflatable Santa that drops his drawers showing boxers that say "Merry Christmas" across the back, then pulls 'em back up. Someone had to design that, figure out how to articulate it, take all the costs out so it could be manufactured cheaply, and get a bunch of non-English speakers to work together to build 'em -- then get Wal-Mart or Home Depot to pick it up as a holiday sales item. We truly live in an Age of Wonders....unfortunately, it's the age of inflatable mooning Santa wonders instead of decent food at an affordable price.

429 The moon was more dramatic last night. Besides shining brighty into my window, when I did go outside I was literally bathed in moonlight. I felt like I was in one of rdbrewer's paintings.

I thought about doing some astronomy tonight -- but eventually reasoned that there was a full moon every month, and that it would be more meaningful if it coincided with a solstice or equinox rather than an arbitrary calendar date traditionally associated with the birth of Christ....when there's all manner of evidence in the Gospels to support his birth in either Spring or Autumn, but nowhere near December 25.

Besides, it's cold out there.

432 While internet shopping for Christmas I bought myself some small items. A Zippo Lighter and a Buck 110 knife. Are the the best or is it nostalgia that makes me love them?

434 Prime rib, mostly rare, with horseradish sour cream sauce, mashed potatoes and brown gravy (no lumps, thank you), a lovely romaine salad with grape tomatoes, Royal Riviera pears, pumpkin pie with whipped cream, assorted buttery cookies and fresh mandarin oranges for dessert.

Just put the china in the cabinet and the husband in the bed.

First real dinner in the new apartment, and it was perfection itself. I finally have a real cooks kitchen and all my stuff has a place to live and be useful at the right times.

**gently pats overful tummy**

Merry Christmas, my little hordlings.

453 It's the same with UFO's. Angels, I mean. Why not head right straight for downtown Bethlehem? Why go out into the wild and bother with shepherds? Get the word out, Angel, make an impact on a hoard of people and start a real fire in the population. It's all worked out okay, sure, I mean the word has gotten out that the King was and is here, but it just has that taint of UFO to it that could have been nipped in the bud. That Angel is probably still doing push-ups for screwing up the press release so badly.

People looked at me like it was routine.
Ohh yea... it was.
