13 Movie recommendation: on Netflix streaming, The Gospel of John, in three different voice-over translations. I like this one because it is just the actual gospel, with an all-Middle Eastern cast, no movie stars. Nicely photographed. I love epics like Ben Hur too, but this is a humble authoritative exposition that lets the viewer focus mainly on Christ's message.

35 “Scrooge was better than his word. He did it all, and infinitely more; and to Tiny Tim, who did not die, he was a second father. He became as good a friend, as good a master, and as good a man, as the good old city knew, or any other good old city, town, or borough, in the good old world. Some people laughed to see the alteration in him, but he let them laugh, and little heeded them; for he was wise enough to know that nothing ever happened on this globe, for good, at which some people did not have their fill of laughter in the outset; and knowing that such as these would be blind anyway, he thought it quite as well that they should wrinkle up their eyes in grins, as have the malady in less attractive forms. His own heart laughed: and that was quite enough for him.”

there's a lot I don't like about that particular governor, but I have no problem with pardoning Downey.

I knew a guy in Texas (where else) who shot his gf's ex. Said ex had come by his house to shoot her and presumably him too. In this case Han did, indeed, shoot first.

The judge found him guilty - so the shooter did his stint, applied for his pardon, and Texas gave it to him.

That's what pardons are for, as #928 puts it.

90 Went to Latin Mass this morning but left after the homily, due to a weird dude in the pew next to me and my own stupid paranoia. This beautiful old church and traditional service mainly attracts older people and couples in their 20's and 30's with bunches of little kids.

I was in the second to last pew and kept noticing this hipster looking 20 something dude with long unwashed hair, a big beard and skinny jeans on. In Starbucks you wouldn't give him a second glance, but he stuck out at Latin Mass. He seemed very jumpy and didn't stand or kneel when anybody else did. He kept pulling his cell phone in and out of his pocket and checking it. - he wasn't paying attention to the service at all.

And he kept sliding down the pew until he wasn't too far from me. I kept watching out of the corner of my eye and well, I kept thinking "This guy isn't praying, he's not interested in the service - so what is he here for, exactly?" Everytime his hand slid into his pocket , I tensed, although each time it was because he was after his cell phone.

OK, so I'm probably a fool for letting this guy scare me - but he scared me. This is a beautiful old church in a now crappy neighborhood and I remember a few years ago a mentally disturbed man came in and started screaming during the service. I finally got up, apologized to the usher by the door, gave the usher $20 to put in the plate for me and left. What else could I have said to him that wouldn't have made me sound like a loon? The dude who frightened me wasn't actually doing anything wrong.

It wasn't that long ago when the idea of leaving Christmas Mass out of fear that a weird looking guy might turn out to be either nuts or Muzzie terrorist would never have occurred to me.

91 Donna - I had the same (perhaps) experience at the International Quranic Studies Association conference. Everyone there was dressed nicely, including the Muslims, and was paying respectful attention to the talks, including the Muslims.

Except for one scrawny, squirrelly South Asian guy who spent most of the time during the lectures bobbing his head in prayer, or looking at his phone.
