I was friends with a woman that had her first child at 15. She was on welfare long enough to get her son and daughter into school, then went to work. Watched Spotlight last nite. Not as bad as I thought it would be due to Michael Keaton. Problem is is that the subject has been done to death. Also, it is the msm praising the msm. Posted by: Bruce With a Wang! at December 24, 2015 10:11 AM (iQIUe) Actually, his method is to watch a bunch of drive-in and "B"-"F" movies, find the effective scenes rewrite them into his storyline and context film them with top line Hollywood actors and production values. I'll give the guy credit. He can write great dialogue and scenes- the opening of "Inglorious Bastards" is a perfect example. But, he's either gotten lazy or surrounded himself with "yes-folk" and no longer bothers to edit himself- as a result...long, mostly boring movies with interesting scenes sprinkled throughout as opposed to movies with one great scene after another (his earlier stuff). I think part of the reason reporters don't stand up to left wing billionaires who buy the newspapers they work for is stupidity. Reporters simply aren't nearly as intelligent and well-informed as they think they are.
They even lack the fundamental attribute of intelligence known as self awareness--which is, in my mind--a big part of the reason they are capable of the stunning levels of hypocrisy shown in that whole Ted Cruz cartoon thing. I know it's not the book thread but I'm reading "The Most They Ever Had" by Rick Bragg. If there is ever a book that will make you feel grateful for what you have, it's this one. It's about mill workers and what the loss of their jobs meant. Bragg is one of my favorite writers.
He tells a story about a worker that was told to hook up a downed electrical wire. The company wouldn't shut down the power for him to do it and he was electrocuted. His wife sued and lost. The company argued that he should have known better. Posted by: Notsothoreau at December 24, 2015 10:34 AM (Lqy/e) 205

Okay, finally.
Would you consider voting for a guy who said this? And this is the thing [progressives] miss: More bureaucracy means less opportunity - because big government and big business don't fight each other so much as feed each other. This is how it works: Smart, talented people go into government thinking the only way to fix complicated problems is with complicated laws - laws that only people like themselves can understand. They make new bureaucracies. They put up red tape. And then? And then they go into the private sector and help businesses navigate the very maze they created. If the insurance industry does not understand how Obamacare works, why not hire the person who ran it? This works out great for them. But what about the rest of us? What about the people who can't get ahead because costs are too high . . . or who don't create jobs because the laws are so confusing? And so round and round the revolving door goes, all while the people stand on the sidelines. That's how today's experts become tomorrow's cronies. And that's why we don't think government should bulk up the bureaucracy. We think it should break up problems so people can solve them themselves. Don't hire more bureaucrats. Don't leave it up to their discretion. Set clear, firm rules that all of us can live by - rules that tell us what's expected and what's off limits. And then let the people go to work. That, to me, is the conservative insight: Don't outsource to the bureaucracy. Crowdsource. That kind of government would not only preserve equal opportunity. It would protect the dignity of the individual. Bad government tries to blunt what makes each of us unique. Good government defends it. Bad government tries to tie us all down. Good government frees us to be our best. And so is government important? Absolutely - it's essential. But there's no mistaking the field for the game. What government is supposed to do is create an environment where the individual can thrive and communities can bloom. In other words, government makes things possible, but the people make them happen. Posted by: chemjeff at December 24, 2015 10:37 AM (uZNvH) 215

A letter from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to Missouri informs the state that its exemption from federal Real ID requirements will come to an end Jan. 10. That means Missouri driver's licenses cannot be accepted as ID at most federal facilities. FS, my parents always told us Santa was mom and dad and a game we were playing. They didn't believe in lying to their kids. I guess that's sort of odd and I don't know if it made any difference one way or the other but I told my brother it's probably best that I'm not even more cynical than I already am : ) It also led to a childhood where every year we got the lecture before we went to my grandmothers to not tell one particular cousin who really should have known the truth earlier than she did. Sheriff Dave Clarke on the Blaze yesterday.
He so completely gets it. Cruz/Clarke baby. Most of the country doesn't vote for the #2 slot anyway so I don't think the "just a Sheriff from Milwaukee" thing would do more damage than would be offset by (a) genuine enthusiasm from true conservatives, (b) swinging a significant portion of the AA vote, or at least discouraging kee jerk mass/bloc Dem voting by AAs, (c) blunting the whole "racist meanie" theme they so love to toss out. Also puts law and order front and center. This is 1968 all over again, potentially in a good way. Once he gets four (or 8 years) in the Veep slot, no one can claim he's "just a Sheriff" anymore, and is positioned for the top of the ticket. I can dream can't I? Merry Christmas everyone. Well, the disclaimer is it really works best in a large crockpot with a rack to put the duck on (or you can cut the duck into four smaller pieces) because you don't want to deal with all that fat from the duck. I may have to try it in the oven this year because I don't have that large of a crockpot or a rack that would fit in it. One 4 to 5 fine pound ready to cook duck 2 Tbs grated onion 1/4 teaspoon dried tarragon 1/2 cup orange juice 1/8 tsp salt 1/8 tsp dried mustard 1/4 cup currant jelly 2 tbs grated orange peel 2 tbs port wine 2 teaspoons cornstarch 1 orange, peeled and sectioned into chunks Place duck in slow cooker. With a fork, prick skin of duckling all over at approx 2 inch intervals. Place ducking on rack in slow cooker (If you cook it in a smaller crock pot cut it into four pieces. In small saucepan combine onion, tarragon, orange juice, salt mustard, jelly, orange peel, wine and corn starch. Cook over medium hear until thickened. Brush 1/3 cup sauce over duck, reserving remaining sauce. Cook on low 6 to 7 hours or until duckling is tender. Remove fat with a bulb baster. Take it out and put under broiler a bit to get the skin a little crispy. Stir orange sections into remaining sauce , heat and pour over duckling right before serving. It's about four servings. Visit the Caribbean sometime. The coke or pepsi they import from the USA is more expensive than the locally produced rum. The rum and cokes are potent in order to save money. In the great state store system in Pennsylvania, bottom shelf vodka is cheaper than bottom shelf rum. Cheap rum, imo, tastes terrible, while cheap vodka is quite good. If anyone is going to church and has a new pastor/priest this year, please keep them in prayer. No matter how many times you've officiated at a Christmas service, it always makes the pastor nervous to have to officiate in front of new people-many of who they've never met before. If you're a person who is naturally an introvert you get performance anxiety because you want to do a good job and you know that with some of these folks it's your one and only chance. Pray that they feel upheld and strengthened the peace and love of Christ, and affirmed in their calling. if your pastor has never done a Christmas service before because they started at another time of the year they need extra prayers.
And I worry this year because of threats of violence in order to shut churches down Posted by: FenelonSpoke at December 24, 2015 11:44 AM (qES5k) Posted by: Ricardo Kill at December 24, 2015 11:44 AM (jfGh+) 397

What conservative party George? There is no conservative party. You and others of your ilk have made being a conservative something no self respecting young idiot would ever think of being. FS: ...one of my favorite memories of Christmas was when the boy was young enough to do the NORAD tracking for Santa; he was so excited.
I remember Dad coming into the bedroom I shared with my brother, late on Christmas Eve, to give us the NORAD report on Santa's progress. I remember the year one of our daughter's friends told her the "truth" about Santa. She was old enough (if one can ever be) that it wasn't too bad. So I'm making the rice pudding, right? I mix all the ingredients together - the eggs, the brown sugar, the half and half, the butter - all the stuff in the bowl. Whip it all up and pour it in the baking dish. Then I think to myself - why isn't this bowl full? This is way too small of a batch for rice pudding. Then it hits me - I forgot the rice.

From Wiki The success of the song White Christmas eventually led to another film based on the song, White Christmas (1954), which starred Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen. It was an extremely loose remake of Holiday Inn, with a plot again involving an inn, but otherwise different from the earlier film.

She would sometimes get fed up with the work and jam things up so she could have a break. Fortunately, the boss had dealt with that before. yeah, good article on Trump, Borders, Masculinity ... whoever linked it upthread.
"He's a breath of old-timey, masucline cologne in an increasingly feminine world" I'd quibble with that a bit. The US and much of the west is becoming feminized in many ways, but mostly in charging white males with rape, the KKK gene, white privilege, and being too manly. The cutthroat treacherous left at its core is not feminized at all, it will castrate others so it can have all the power. While Obama has a feminine side, the Democrat/commies are unapologetic in their vicious attacks on the right, and Kennedy and Clinton rose to the top seemingly on the wave of their negligent homicide and multiple molestations (alleged). And the rest of the world is still invading and chopping heads off, right up to the border in Mexico where cartels kill off whole police forces. The Muslims we invite in are maybe westernized, but not all. They don't shed all their male tendencies but they are approved since they are part of the diversification that will help break down our coherent society. The commie plan is a 100 years old, and in the 60's it became clear they wanted to feminize US, to weaken us. But Putin or Mandela were still strong male warriors. Winnie did take up the slack for her man while he played protester, and she made sure the necklace tortures and murders continued ... but that is not exactly feminism. The county I used to live in had been full of poor people for some time. There were two types of women - those that looked on their children as a way onto welfard and those that didn't want to be on welfare at all. The only jobs in the area were physical labor. I think about them this time of year, because they would get food stamps the first of the month. With Thanksgiving and Christmas coming at the end of the month, they had to really learn how to manage resources to have treats for the holidays.

I think one of the key points of Santa was watching your kid's minds begin to work around the age of six. They were figuring it out. My daughter came up to me around the Fourth of July when she was 7 and told me Santa wasn't real.

It's odd but I have come to believe that one of the big problems with modern society is the easy availability of contraceptives. It seems to lead to cultures that don't value life or children. Women that don't have kids seem to have that same Peter Pan syndrome we see in young men (and I say that as someone that doesn't have kids). And it also seems to lead to the feminization of cultures. I don't know of a solution.

It is a known fact that increased hormones will cause women to be infertile, changes in their voice and temperament, how they are able to deal with children and Males, and leads to cancer and other problems later in life. >>My parents enjoyed Santa (Easter Bunny, Leprechauns, etc), but they put the twist that Christmas was the one night of the year the animals talked -- pets had better be treated well, or else!
My mom did that too. She raised horses and dogs so we always had a few underfoot and on Christmas Eve they all got special treats. But the best traditions we had when we were little was that Santa didn't just bring the presents, he brought everything. We'd go to bed on Christmas Eve and Santa would bring the tree and decorate the house, inside and out and put out the stockings and the presents. It was like magic when we were little. Yep, local folks used to have those bumper stickers about spotted owls being tasty to eat. Plenty of spotted owls up towards Canada - they just lost their Southern range. And since the local schools were funded by timber sales, it made a bad situation even worse. Then they turned it into a "National Scenic Area", restricting development. Some folks made money on that, but not most of the folks that had originally settled the area.
Never understood why places like Monterey, CA didn't get the National Scenic Act treatment. Oh wait, rich people live there. Posted by: notsothoreau at December 24, 2015 01:17 PM (5HBd1) 579

Is Schlafly really a post constitutional Republican, when she says Trump may be the country's last hope?
From that Trump supporter bashing article: "You can be forgiven for thinking that in Trump's world, constitutional niceties - indeed any constraints whatsoever - are for losers". Sorry ... don't forgive/accuse me, I don't think anything like that, nor do any Trump supporters I know. I wish "they" would stop projecting their views of the Trump supporter as Troglodyte, into their pieces. It is the constant straw man, where the Trump haters misrepresent his grandiose statements (or at least fail to present context), then go on to build their straw man ignorant Trump supporter, so they can ride off as the noble constitutionalist conservative ... that loses like a Huckleberry backed Akin candidate. Cruz or Trump ... fine, as Adelson said when asked what he is looking for ... "someone that can win". Do he and Schlafly want no constraints whatsoever? I'd argue that almost all of what Trump proposes in grandiose simplicity to the masses, can be accomplished in constitutional procedural ways. Fiorina addressed this briefly, in saying that she would get it done, basically by effective use of the bully pulpit ... "address the nation, press one for yes on your ipad ..." Public opinion wins, guided by their representative ... the POTUS in this case. That is how congressional stalemate is defeated. Yes, there is a sort of 'prima donna class versus blue collar class' within the Republicans, but the Trump hate is another class, where some desire to be 'pure' even if it means losing. That purity crown leads to this chest beating, straw man creating, pompous blogger type, that must demonstrate his superiority over the lowly Trumpeter. The argument is whether a Cruz can win over Hillary, or whether we'd need a Trump to crash those Overton windows for the next eight years. The "bully pulpit" is constitutional, and maybe Trump is the only bully that can effectively reach beyond PC. oh, and new thread up ... I'll leave this rant sitting here Merry Christmas Posted by: Illiniwek at December 24, 2015 01:30 PM (5Gpe2) 612

In the great state store system in Pennsylvania,
bottom shelf vodka is cheaper than bottom shelf rum. Cheap rum, imo, tastes terrible, while cheap vodka is quite good. Posted by: free range jihadist at December 24, 2015 11:39 AM (7v/r5) You want a good, smooth, mid-priced rum? Try Flor de Cana from Nicaragua. The seven year old stuff is very fine for mixed drinks. But guess what, there's a Union behind it so it's not going anywhere anytime soon. Corbett would've got reelected if he hadn't caved to the Unions and forced the privatization of the Liquor stores.
