Quote of the Day I

The world puts a brave face on everything that happens. Yet when it turns out that Saudi Arabia is the chair of United Nations committee on Human Rights and the EU boycotts Israeli goods, or that international football and the Olympic Games are rigged, the examples of KoKo and P2 offer rightful understanding of the scheme of things.

-- David Pryce-Jones

Quote of the Day II

"Horse pollution was bad in 1900," said Crichton. How much worse would someone in 1900 expect it to "be a century later, with so many more people riding horses?

"But of course, within a few years, nobody rode horses except for sport. And in 2000, France was getting 80 percent of its power from an energy source that was unknown in 1900. Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, and Japan were getting more than 30 percent from this source, unknown in 1900. Remember, people in 1900 didn't know what an atom was. They didn't know its structure. They also didn't know what a radio was, or an airport, or a movie, or a television, or a computer, or a cell phone, or a jet, an antibiotic, a rocket, a satellite, an MRI, ICU, IUD, IBM, IRA, ERA, EEG, EPA, IRS, DOD, PCP, HTML, Internet, interferon, instant replay, remote sensing, remote control, speed dialing, gene therapy, gene splicing, genes, spot welding, heat-seeking, bipolar, Prozac, leotards, lap dancing, e-mail, tape recorders, CDs, airbags, plastic explosive, plastic, robots, cars, liposuction, transduction, superconduction, dish antennas, step aerobics, smoothies, twelve-step, ultrasound, nylon, rayon, Teflon, fiber optics, carpal tunnel, laser surgery, laparoscopy, corneal transplant, kidney transplant, AIDS. None of this would have meant anything to a person in the year 1900. They wouldn't know what you are talking about.

Now: you tell me you can predict the world of 2100. Tell me it's even worth thinking about. Our [emissions] models just carry the present into the future. They're bound to be wrong. Everybody who gives it a moment's thought knows it.

-- Michael Crichton in a 2003 speech on climate models at CalTech

So maybe Ace was onto something: French Set to be the World's Most Commonly Spoken Language by 2050

Mon Dieu - so all that time I spent studying Russian, then Japanese, German, and now Mandarin to make myself more appealing to the next future rulers of the world was just wasted. I could have just stuck with my crappy middle school French and relaxed a little. Tant pis I guess. At least it ain't gonna be Arabic.

Is the Obama Administration Throwing a B-52 Crew Under the Bus?

Yes. Note that because the islands are artificial China has no valid territorial claims around them and the US is perfectly within its rights to overfly them.

Meanwhile, there are some answered questions about that B-52 mission.  For starters, there's the obvious matter of why the crew is being investigated for flying near an artificial island which cannot claim a territorial limit?  Secondly, it's equally clear this mission was aimed at "showing the flag" near PRC outposts in the South China Sea; what sort of distance was the plane supposed to maintain along its planned route of flight?

The Pentagon claims that "bad weather" may have caused the plane to go off course, but offered no additional details.  Officials have not released the actual date of the flight, so it's difficult to determine when weather conditions (such as thunderstorms) might have forced the crew to deviate from their planned route.  Likewise, the military has not provided rules of engagement for such missions, although video from earlier flights seems to show aircraft within 12 miles of the artificial islands, and under existing conventions, we could overfly those outposts without violating the law.

It's also worth noting that B-52's are equipped with GPS and a navigator is part of the five-person flight crew.  So, it's a bit more difficult (at least in theory) for the giant bomber to deviate from its intended flight path.  It is also a fair bet that the navigator on the mission was not a "newbie" fresh from the schoolhouse at Barksdale.  For a sensitive flights like those near disputed islands in the South China Sea, the B-52 detachment on Guam would only assign an experienced crew--someone with hundreds, perhaps thousands of hours in the jet, and possibly qualified as an instructor or flight examiner as well.

In the interim, the BUFF crew is probably grounded, awaiting their fate as pawns in a geopolitical game.  It would be a damn shame if they were actually punished for doing their job--by the same, feckless political/military hacks who sent them in the first place.

Wait - The San Bernardino Terrorists Didn't Post Any Public Support for Jihad on Social Media?

Apparently not. Not that ICE has covered themselves in glory anyway in this case but this does point out that short of a mindreading device it's very hard to screen out immigrants with jihad in their hearts based on their applications. Which suggests broader, easier to implement filtering is needed.

The two attackers who opened fire in San Bernardino, Calif., earlier this month had not posted publicly on social media sites about supporting jihad, FBI Director James B. Comey said Wednesday.

The husband-and-wife duo were "showing signs in their communication of their joint commitment to jihad and to martyrdom" through private messages, rather than publicly visible postings, Comey said.

"Those communications are direct, private messages," Comey said during a news conference here. "So far, in this investigation we have found no evidence of posting on social media by either of them at that period in time and thereafter reflecting their commitment to jihad or to martyrdom. I've seen some reporting on that, and that's a garble."

The Mysterious World-Wide Abductions of the 70s and 80s

On the evening of July 31, 1978, Kaoru Hasuike and his girlfriend, Yukiko Okudo, rode bikes to the summer fireworks festival at the Kashiwazaki town beach. They whisked down the winding lanes of their coastal farming village, a hundred and forty miles north of Tokyo. Then they parked their bikes and made their way past a crowd of spectators to a remote stretch of sand. As the first plumes rose in the sky, Kaoru noticed four men approaching. Cigarette in hand, one of them asked him for a light. As he reached into his pocket, the men attacked, gagging the couple, binding their hands and legs. "Keep quiet and we won't hurt you," one of the assailants said. Kaoru and Yukiko were thrown into separate sacks and loaded onto an inflatable raft. Peering through the sack's netting, Kaoru saw the warm, bright lights of Kashiwazaki City fading into the background.

Ultimately it was a breeding project.

The Oldest European Settlement in the U.S. Discovered

One thing that's often forgotten is how early and extensive the Spanish exploration and settlement of North America was . Tristan de Luna explored throughout the southeast and in the 1560s the Spanish established forts in what is now Tennessee.

We know that St. Augustine (established in 1565) is the oldest existing European community in the U.S. We know Jamestown (1607) is the oldest English community, and although the Roanoke colony was settled earlier, it did not survive. Such was the case of the Luna settlement, a Spanish colony in Florida that was the first multi-year European settlement in what would became the United States. Spanish conquistador Tristán de Luna y Arellano settled his expedition in what is now Pensacola, Florida, in 1559. Stranded by a hurricane that wrecked their ships, the colony lasted until 1561. It's exact location was lost to history -until now.

Once again, a question for the Horde. I just went ahead and got myself an early Christmas present, an internal LG blu-ray writer drive for my PC.

The Valley and Siletz railroad was a principally logging railroad that went up to a logging town in the Oregon coast range. It also carried mail, at one time, and I think it had a passenger run as well before the roads were put in.
When I was a kid it was announced to be closing, so a number of the notable members of the local Masonic lodge bought tickets to ride up to Siletz and back again in the caboose.

Whatever you may think, I KNOW that common law marriage doesn't work that way in California. Besides, even in states where it works in a similar fashion, the couple normally has to "hold themselves out as" husband-and-wife -- which we have never done.

I don't know why that stuck in my head but the snip the red wire triggered it.

As you approach a room you hear this conversation going and if you enter too fast you'll be caught up in the blast. The blast makes it tricky to advance to the next section.

I always admired the "full speed ahead, damn the torpedos" attitude of it. I've been around guys like that. I did it myself occasionally.

Whatever you may think, I KNOW that common law marriage doesn't work that way in California. Besides, even in states where it works in a similar fashion, the couple normally has to "hold themselves out as" husband-and-wife -- which we have never done.

Dylan Thomas, 1914 - 1953

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Clerk had, apparently, entered only $20.00 in the register because it was reading $4.81.

Clerk looks around as if trying to find a manager. Finally reaches for her cell and uses the calculator. Gives back 81¢ change. (Give her props, at least she could use the calculator.)

479 Remember, people in 1900 didn't know what an atom was.

-- Michael Crichton in a 2003 speech

Not to take away from Crichton;s general point, which was correct, but he was grossly wrong about several of the things noted in his "Unknown in 1900" list.

To correct the record on several items in the list:

Things that WERE Known by 1900

cars (i.e. self-propelled automobiles) -- already existed in 1900, for over a decade by then.

genes -- Their existence was proven in 1864; what was unknown in 1900 was the microscopic structure of chromosomes and DNA. But genes, as a concept for transmitting inheritable traits, were already well-known and accepted by 1900.

movie -- Already existed in various forms long before 1900. And the first actual movie theater showing, with a movie exactly as we understand it today, was done in 1896.

IUD -- Arab caravan traders invented the IUD in prehistory, as a way to prevent female camels from getting pregnant during long journeys on the Silk Road. (They used pebbles inserted in the camel uterus. Yuck.) So the concept was known. Even occasionally tried by humans. It just wasn't safe until the modern antiseptic IUD was invented.

plastic explosive -- Invented in 1875. Oops.

radio - Consumer radios did not yet exist in 1900, but the concept of radio waves and radio communication and machines for receiving broadcasts existed several years earlier, in the latter decades of the 1800s.

satellite -- He was referring, undoubtedly, to artificial satellites. But of course natural satellites, like the moon, were known since forever, and Galileo proved 400 years earlier that they existed around other planets too. And although there no artificial satellites actually in orbit in 1900, the principle behind creating one was first proposed, I believe, in the 1700s.

plastic -- Depending on how you define it, plastics have been around for centuries. Even "plastic" as a made-made artificial chemical substance was invented in the 1850s.

DOD -- Under the name "Department of War" it has existed since 1789.

Remote sensing -- This is a weird claim. The term "remote sensing" was often used in the 1800s for the paranormal gimmick we now call "ESP." Furthermore, in the definition of "measuring things from afar," that as done by balloon-borne surveyors long before 1900 as well. So no matter which way he meant it, Crichton was wrong on both.

dish antennas -- The principle behind them was already well-known by the 16th century, if you count visible light as a wavelength (i.e. parabolic mirrors were part of some early telescopes). Heinrich Hertz made the first modern-style parabolic dish antenna in 1888.

smoothies -- Were invented during the health craze of the mid-19th century (though I'm a little unsure on the dates for this one).

computer -- Computing machines existed before 1900. But they were mechanical, not electronic, and were not universal. So this one is debatable.

carpal tunnel -- He probably meant the "syndrome," but the body part known as the carpal tunnels were discovered no later than the 1600s, when Italian anatomists (Florence, Bologna) first systemically dissected cadavers.

Is that wrong enough for you? Or should I go on?

482 Also, the very first thing on his list, "atom," is a Greek word dating to circa 400BC.

People knew what the concept of an "atom" was by 1900. We just didn't know its structure, or the physics behind it.

BTW, this should be juxtaposed against the news on the radio this evening that SF has just officially gone "progressive". Not "liberal", not "Democrat", not "left-wing".....but "progressive". It's not enough to be a sanctuary city that refuses to deport nutcase violent illegal aliens when they're gunning down young ladies on sidewalks to die in the arms of their parents. It's not enough to host festivals celebrating depravity. It's not enough to harass lawful businesses into moving beyond the city limits through arbitrary and capricious government overreach [ http://www.newsmax.com/TheWire/ last-san-francisco-gun-store/2015/10/06/id/694936/ ]......no, now they can "virtue-signal" that they are totalitarian utopian idealists with no grounding in reality at all.

Greater CA doesn't deserve anything.....but SF has been begging for it for years.

I said, "come on -- liberal and socialist mean the same thing. Whats the difference between Bernie and Hillary?"

He laughed. Said maybe he'll vote Trump.

heh.

I never had time to get freaked out. My future wife got pregnant and I got married. Didn't make me feel old just settled into married with children life. Wish we would have both been ok with that life but she was not. And I did not spend the time picking a real partner and it all went to shit. No one to blame but me and since I love my kids no regrets. A good decision and a $10K ring is the cheap way to go.

Posted by: CaliGirl at December 23, 2015 01:14 AM (BHl9S)

511 In late night news (or is it early early morning news?).

Anyway, some good, some bad.

First the good;

the new governor of KY Bevin has EO'd that all marriage licenses will no longer have the country clerk's name on them.

This allows Davis who has gone to jail for not signing gay marriages licenses (actually she stopped signing any marriage licenses) to not have to put her name to the license.

Assorted trouble makers are grumbling at this smart simple solution; (aclu, Naacp? and of course the lesbians who have sued her)

The bad new: Washington's Gun Violence Tax has been upheld for now. A $25 dollar per gun tax on any gun sold and a 2-5 cent per round tax on ammunition will go into effect.

The NRA has made it clear that this will just hurt the local gun stores as people will go outside the area to buy their guns and ammo. This means that once again a tax touted to help pay for something will now bring in very little thus causing the Liberals to seek other ways of stealing that money from the citizens.

Oh and Santa has been banned from Brunei.

And, I read today that Va (of all places) has enacted a repeal of their concealed carry reciprocity agreement.
Which means that every NRA member in the nation will now do whatever possible to not spend a penny in the state ever again.

I don't know how this bodes for any other gun laws for the future (concealed carry harder to get?, open carry, etc...), but I guarantee that CCL applications go way up, real quickly. *Ahem.

And, I'm betting that we'll put another R in Richmond next election without a problem.

Decades ago, at a restaurant-bar, the bar computer-cash register went down. I might've had a few of their frozen margaritas already - which beverage was why most people were there. You conflate concepts with understanding, for example your treatments of genes and IUDs.

You give credit to items (eg. the automobile, plastics and radio) that were unworkable novelties in 1900.

Your definition of remote sensing technically incorrect* and a far cry from what the term conveys to the layman.

Finally, it's clear that Crichton meant carpal tunnel syndrome.

*Technically, remote sensing is the acquisition of information about an object or phenomenon without making physical contact with the object. The naked eye is a great remote sensor.

Please try again.

Meh. Plenty of guys with more $ than me, but I know what you mean.
Believe it or not, just because it's a dive bar doesn't mean the people are trash, or that they're there to drink.
(This place has the cleanest kitchen you've ever seen - I bet their weedy breakfast & lunch receipts far outweigh the liquor sales).

On pool league nights, almost nobody drank booze (I did!). Coke or coffee. It can be very competitive. Owner was a very good friend, and I tried to convince her not to host pool. But she was probably one of the top 3 female players in the area, and loved pool more than profit, I guess. Hell, she sponsored me for league & tournaments...

The money was not the point, being dirty from hard work means you work. After a woman has supported a man or three that won't work or is very good at losing employment, the ones that are able to learn realize that a man who works is very appealing.

620 So we got proposal stories and Forever Alone stories. My ex-wife divorced me for essentially no reason whatsoever and I'm well on my way to Forever Alone. I do have some wonderful kids, but I'm trying to reconcile myself to the probability that I will never again experience companionship, and I'm not even all that old. Some days I don't really think about it that much. Other days it's soul-crushing.

Posted by: Insomniac - Pale Horse/Death 2016 at December 23, 2015 06:31 AM (kpqmD)

621 @620 Insomniac

I know so many guys in your shoes, but the only thing I can tell you is that she did you a favor in the long run and her end will not be what she believes.

One such guy's ex is now in a nusing home with alzheimer's -- her own kids don't visit her and she is only the next county over. My sisters friends just divorced her husband of 20 years and left her teenage children to follow boyfriend (the one she was schlonging while married) to Florida. Another did so because "she was bored"-- again teenage sons and a nice guy. I was at both their weddings all those years ago.

I read recently that 25% of American women suffer mental illness. I think the number is under-inflated.

623 Even back when I was a B-52 crewdog (admittedly, nearly fifty years ago), it would have been nearly impossible for a BUF ('BUFF' is the PC version) to pass near any island by accident. On radar, islands are bright, sharp returns on a dark background. Very obvious, very easy to identify, and at an exactly known range and bearing.

You do get some pretty big thunderstorms in that area, and radar sometimes malfunctions, so it's possible the crew deviated from the flight plan to avoid a storm and the radar broke and all the other nav systems broke, too, but, gosh, I doubt it.

The Air Force, incidentally, has never been especially reluctant to sacrifice people at the sharp end to avoid embarrassing the rear echelons. The crew members are probably signing up for correspondence courses for their real estate agents' licenses even as we speak.
