2 Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, December 17, 2015. On this day in 497 BC the first Saturnalia festival was celebrated in ancient Rome. This holiday became very popular and formed some of the basis for Christmas celebrations that came later as the Roman Empire became Christianized.

8 The Muslim couple who killed 14 people when they opened fire at a San Bernardino, Calif. holiday party earlier this month were buried Tuesday at a funeral guarded by FBI agents, Reuters reported Wednesday.

Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik were reportedly buried in a Muslim cemetery hours away from San Bernardino in a ceremony attended by about 10 people, including members of Farook's family and people who used to pray with the couple at mosques.

They should have been thrown in a pig pen full of pig shit.

One odd impression that I have been left with from reading "HeyJackass" and watching the local B'More news.

B'More seems to have much more accurate shooters.

Survival rate of a Chicago shooting is damn near 80%.

B'More is around mid 60's if I had to make a guess.

Almost as if Chicago shootings are emotional/recreational, and B'More shootings are more of a business.

With standards, and performance reviews.

37 Good morning all.

From this date in 1943

Dec 17, 1943 - The EZ Dog Journals
Consolidation on entire front. Lungo completely taken and San Pietro entered at 1600. [Margin note: San Piedro area perhaps the most heavily mined that has been encountered to date.] Patrols moving toward San Vittore. Little artillery action. Warmer.

San Pietro = San Piedro = San Pietro Infine (Province of Caserta, Italy)

The Germans have withdrawn back toward Monte Cassino by this juncture. Not much Christmas shopping available to the troops on either side I would imagine.

Which "House conservatives" would this refer to, Vic?

From what I see in the article, those dissing Ryan's Christmas present to Choom Boy are complaining because they didn't get additional stuff they wanted, not criticizing the bill for wanton spending, support of worthless programs, giveaways to fatcats and doing violence to the economy.

My usual rant: Every. Damn. Member. of Congress needs to be thrown out of office. The whole House comes up for reelection next year, and all need to be broomed.

I incline toward Year of the Lie. Lena Dunham lied about rape because she thought it was cool. Emma Sulkowicz lied about rape and became a celebrity. "Hands Up Don't Shoot" was the lie for which cities burned. "ISIS is contained" followed by "I never said ISIS was contained." "There were no classified documents on my private email server." "I never claimed the Benghazi attack was because of the video."

Yeah, I'm going with 'The Year of the Lie," of course you could make a strong case for "The Year of the Bully." Or "The Year of the Snowflake."

The American contingent in Italy was always referred to in the press as "Mark Clark's 5th Army". He seemed to act as if they were his personal army. His decision to turn toward Rome after the Anzio breakout (in my opinion) was for personal aggrandizement. The Allies could have surrounded and killed/captured several veteran German divisions if they had pushed inland to Route 7 instead of going toward Rome. Those divisions were able to be withdrawn by the Germans and probably prolonged the end stages of the war in France and Germany.

127 Excerpt:

General Truscott stroked his chin thoughtfully as he digested EZ Dog's briefing. "Captain Muldoon, we are not going to sit on this damned beachhead forever. Within the next two to three weeks we will be committing all of our resources into advancing and breaking this impasse with the Nazis. I cannot expect to do that with this pain-in-the-ass German heavy gun breathing down our necks. If our boys can push forward far enough at Carroceto and we get you your position for the 155's can you promise me that you can eliminate the threat of that infernal gun?"

With a barely perceptible gulp Captain Eddie Muldoon replied, "Absolutely yes, sir. If we get our shot we can take out that bastard! One shot is all I ask!"

"Fair enough," the general said. He sized up young Muldoon with a critical eye for several long seconds before adding, "You ask for one shot? One shot is all we are going to have. The entire Corps is going to have our britches around our ankles and our ass sticking out in the breeze on this deal. You'd better not let the Gerries shoot it off or there will be hell to pay. Understood?"

Things will have pretty much blown over by then.

173 Re San Pietro and John Huston documentary:

It's worth watching, but keep in mind it is told by a Hollywood director who has no clue about combat in general and mountain attrition warfare in particular. The 36th Division's 143d Infantry and the 3rd Ranger Battalion attack San Pietro repeatedly, taking heavy casualties, until, after we seize and secure the high ground to the north and south, the Germans (inexplicably, to Huston) withdraw. His big conclusion about there being thousands of more San Pietros was just melodrama.

It would have been a lot more interesting if it were paired with a German cinema director who told the story from the German point of view. The Germans (three panzergrenadier battalions) were attacked relentlessly for days, taking horrendous casualties under near-constant artillery fire. Eventually, when the Americans were occupying the high ground on their right and left flanks and continuing to attack from the front, they retreated.

The Germans could not withstand thousands, or even hundreds, more San Pietros. We gave them more, at Monte Cassino and beyond. It's useful to remember that there are two sides to the story.

Agreed. But I think we had very sub-par generalship in that theatre of operations. When Clark had the chance to cut off the retreating German forces, instead he went pell-mell for the glory of taking Rome - which was an open city at the time. Kesselring was able to save his army and retreat north. Italy never fell. Only after the unconditional surrender the next year did they lay down their arms.

It's fair to say that Mark Clark caused many more American deaths than necessary. And do not get me started on General John P. Lucas.

Thanks for expanding on that. It's been my impression that the Americans were still pretty green in Europe (North Africa, Sicily and then Salerno campaigns being their only experience). They applied some of the lessons that were being learned in the Pacific. You can certainly compare Anzio to the island hopping strategy in the Pacific- bypass the larger enemy contingent and make a landing beyond, thus trapping or isolating forces without having to engage in direct combat. That's why Gen. Clark's decision to go to Rome was so controversial.

I may be wrong in this analysis and appreciate those with more knowledge putting me straight.

Technically if Congress created them Congress needs to end them, unless they delegated that authority to potus. My sense is that the "even a broken clock..." meme applies to McCarthy. Yes, there were plenty of what J. 1- Paul Ryan grew the beard so LIVs, seeing him for the first time, would recognize him that way, and he plans to shave it off and go full conservative in the future, appearing as a completely different person
2- it's to hide the scars from some kind of "Face Off" surgery, and Boehner is actually wearing Ryan's face.

Yeah, basically you blacklist specific IP addresses, or a range of IP addresses, like the ones Britain just sold to Saudi Arabia, which are now being used by ISIS. Traffic to and from those IPs gets captured by NSA, then sent to the bit bucket - or maybe something more devious. It only affects those people.
