Wow: Students Told to Inscribe "There Is No God But Allah and Mohammad Is His Prophet" In Arabic as Part of "Calligraphy Lesson;" Girls Encouraged to Wear Hijab to Better Understand Muslim Code of Modest Dress

Their defense is that they didn't translate the Arabic central pillar of the Muslim faith; students were merely made to write the words championing a religion not their own, without knowing what they were writing.

So.... they were merely to unknowingly copy the key tenet of a faith they did not believe in.

Students asked at some point for a Bible. I guess maybe when they figured out what the teacher was having them write? She told them no, they'd already read the Bible.

It was time to consider a new religion, I guess.

Hey, illuminated writing is an important form of expression, historically! No one can object to writing out "Jesus is Lord" in illuminated calligraphy a few times, just to "appreciate" that "culture."

Read the link. The parents found out after the fact and it was not pretty and the school told them to go sit and spin.

Here's the thing. Knowing about other religions and cultures and societies and the like used to be a hallmark of an educated person. But there is a universe of difference between merely teaching something and stealth proselytizing for it.

Not to mention that when you tell kids and their parents that omfg what is wrong with you separation of church and state so you can't sing Silent Night during the Holiday Celebration and then turn around and do this, well, people will not give you the benefit of the doubt as to your good faith and intentions.

Also the excuse given by the school district is bullshit. If you just want to see how complex Arabic is to write, have the kids copy a headline from a newspaper or, if it must be artistic, have them do some lines from one of Rumi's poems.

Islam does not require you feel anything in your heart. It is exactly the same as getting baptized and memorizing the beatitudes and getting your first communion in catholicism.

The only requirement to convert to Islam is to say the Shahada. They have no further requirements then that. Where you convert because of whats in your heart or because someone is pointing a gun at your head, it makes no difference.

I don't know what you're even arguing about. Catholicism (and I imagine other Christian sects) have a much more complex conversion process, including free will and all of that and accepting Jesus Christ in your heart and whatnot. Islam does not.

I'm not saying it means anything, and that there's some magic to it -- only that in the eyes of the ummah, those kids are now Muslims. And that a public school forced them to convert to Islam, just the same as if they made them go through the headache to convert to Catholicism.

No, I don't think saying "there is no god but allah and muhammed is his messenger" is some kind of voodoo hex and the skies will open and you'll be damned. Just that schools should not be in the business of doing what is, essentially, a forced religious conversion in the eyes of Islam.

I went to college in the 1980's. I took a course in Middle Eastern civilization taught by a Pakistani Muslim. The first day of classes, the very first thing this guy did was instruct all of us to stand up and recite the shahada (which he had written out on the board).

I had no idea what it was or what it meant at the time, but I refused to say it. The professor (and he was a full professor) told me if I didn't say it he would flunk me. I left class, went down to the registrar's office and dropped the class. (BTW, the rest of the class did as the professor ordered them, and he beamed at his class full of new Muslim converts).

Muslims believe they score points in heaven for getting new converts. You get converts by getting non-Muslims to say the shahada. This should absolutely NOT be tolerated in public schools -- no matter what ruse is used to accomplish it.

There are all kinds of non-religious sentences that could have been used to demonstrate the complexity of calligraphy. The fact that the shahada was chosen was no accident.

That reminds me. I have a couple cousins who grew up in a church where they had to wear dresses, not cut their hair, etc...I saw one of them put up a link on facebook the other day to an article on modesty as a Christian value...and there was a discussion about what it actually means that I found very interesting (also interesting that one of them may have left that church, which also happened with a coworker who was Pentecostal and their pastor all of a sudden outlawed jean skirts and she was like 'this is bullshit, I'm out'.)

And that ramble comes from the thought that a discussion on how modesty is practiced in different religious cultures might have been very interesting. Nuns, amish, conservative jewish traditions, etc...all could have been included.

No one is saying that. We're saying that in the eyes of the ummah (the "muslim community") all you need to do is say that phrase to convert to Islam.

So the school just told the kids to go through the process to convert to Islam as part of a lesson in calligraphy.

Now, as an agnostic / atheisty person, I find the whole thing silly.

BUT, Muslims do not find it silly. Just like Christians don't find "accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and savior" and getting baptized silly.

And public schools should not be in the game of getting kids to go through the process of converting to a religion.

The thing is that I wouldn't necessarily write off calligraphy as a useless class **IF** the public schools were excelling in teaching the other subjects. I home educate my children and we do all sorts of things in addition to math, science, English, and history. And we get it all done in under three hours a day. But the public schools are failing at teaching the kids how to read and add, so adding in extras like calligraphy right now seems a bit...optimistic.

I think its more likely the teacher is a big dummy who had no idea what she was doing and just thought the phrase looked cool.

But my point is that in todays world it's verboten for kids to pray before a football game, sing christmas songs, or even celebrate christmas (it's now "winter holiday"). Yet, a teacher has the kids write out a phrase to convert to Islam and the school shrugs it off.

It's the double standard more than anything that drives me nuts. But either way, I don't think the school should be in the business of touching religious conversions and things like that.

Perhaps today it's a waste of time, but in the dark ages, when I was in the Army, a friend had studied calligraphy as a hobby in high school.

His military training was tossed aside and he spent his entire tour in Korea writing invitations, making charts, putting notes on graphs, lettering signs and all sorts of other writing duties.

Soft time. Spent his year sipping Brandy like a gentleman.

You just never know when a skill will help.
