Jonathon V. Last on Understanding Campus Unrest

In this, the millennials who inhabit America's campuses have learned a great deal from the left. If The Closing of the American Mind anticipated political correctness, it was Jonah Goldberg's Liberal Fascism that prefigured what we now find on college campuses. Goldberg saw that liberalism had come unmoored from specific policy goals and was finally interested in just one thing: power.

Writing in the wake of his own school's capitulation, Claremont McKenna professor Charles Kesler observed, "When the leftists lacked power, they embraced free speech. Now that they have power, they don't need it." There are a great many other niceties of which the leftists no longer have any need.

Unless it is checked, in the coming decades the movement seen now on America's campuses will take control of every institution it can and burn to the ground every institution it cannot. Because however ridiculous the student protesters may seem, they have an intense, unshakable belief in the legitimacy of their cause. And they understand, keenly, that power is everything.

4 Good evening, folks. All debated out? I just turned on the radio in time to hear the last few sentences by Trump. That was enough.

Today, Windows had a bunch of "important updates" for me. So, I checked them all. There was one "optional update" that I didn't look at - they're usually un-checked by default so I left it for later.

When I told it to start installing the updates, it began by trying to install Windows 10! That was the "optional" one, checked by default.

Sneaky bastids. Almost got me.

I'm not sure if the exit stop signs are also private too. They may not be since you're entering a public road.

The really nasty civil warfare weapon is a suppressed .22lr rifle used as an urban sniper rifle. As the Russkies found out to their grief in Chechnya.

With that weapon, you don't shoot to kill. You shoot to wound, so that the patrol has to stop and deal with the casualty and call in medevac.

Whole thing is stupid. The only changes is where the data is stored... and actually, the Government has access to MORE data than before... as before it was for Land Lines, now the meta data is for all phone conversations...

It is just housed on Company storage, instead of government storage... but the Government still has access... even without a warrant if the company voluntarily (ie, Gov pays ) access to all the data.

And in fact, in the last bill, they lowered the bar on what you need to get said access....

84 The main tactic the Chechens used in Grozny was to stay at 500 to 300 meters distance from the Russian army, and snipe at them with bolt actions.

To far to be shot at effectively with AKs, too close for the Russians to use artillery or airstrikes.

Eventually, the gave up, left Grozny, and watched at a distance as Putin leveled the city with Bison bombers. You CAN win against guerillas, if you don't mind leveling your cities.

104 I've never believed that fear was very good at creating unit cohesion and strength.

It is good for forming units that will be brought against other similar units to take territory by force and/or attrition. (cannon fodder in other words)

It's not good for commandos operating behind lines or small units skirmishing against larger forces.

It takes loyalty, integrity and courage. Fear of punishment doesn't encourage those virtues.

It does work for certain military goals but it has it's faults.

And of course the military has been doing this sort of thing for a long time and I haven't but the military has been known to be short sighted and even ruinously wrong before.

Posted by: Harry Paratestes at December 15, 2015 11:48 PM (AkOaV)

Yes, but sometimes killing an enemy on the battlefield outright isn't as useful as wounding him. A wounded enemy requires several able-bodied soldiers to care for him: one bullet takes 3-4 soldiers out of the engagement. If the enemy ignores their wounded man, that's horribly corrosive to unit morale and cohesion.

Plus, modern military forces wear body armor only on their heads and torsos. Legs are unprotected.

Even though they had several there, I passed on it.
Anyone have any insight here? Any concept of what a blemish might be?

Budget ARs are notorious for being overgassed/undergassed, usually over. Can usually be fixed either way, but it's a pain in the ass to deal with.

Try a couple of the other clones that have a more rounded grip at the gun store and if they have a range try one if they rent them.

Some, including the Glocks, have changeable back straps and front straps so that you can modify the grip even though the side grips themselves are not replaceable. (and even some makes do that too. Hi point pistols have side grips)

Try before you buy especially if money's tight.

Generally speaking you are correct. Both tickets dismissed, next case.

220 The Democratic proposal relies on a secret [no-fly] list and mere suspicion to strip some Americans of their constitutional rights. It provides no process for Americans wrongly placed on the list to get their names removed. The FBI is already alerted during the criminal background check process anytime someone on the watch list tries to purchase a gun, and it is already illegal for almost all of the people on the list to buy a gun. According to the National Counterterrorism Center, only 25,000 of the 1.1 million people on the watch list are U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents, and the Gun Control Act generally prohibits both illegal aliens and legal aliens who have "been admitted to the United States under a nonimmigrant visa" from buying guns. There have nevertheless been some high profile cases of innocent U.S. citizens--including former senator Ted Kennedy, Presidential advisor Valerie Jarrett and The Weekly Standard's Stephen F. Hayes--being erroneously placed on the terror watch list.

--------------------

Necessity is the mother of invention, and it's a generally known fact that people tend to make really interesting inventive leaps when they need to come up with a solution to a pressing issue. As a result, there's been a pervasive idea among some of the progs that if they just outlaw certain forms of seemingly required activity, someone will invent a "better" way to do it that doesn't require the forbidden activity.

What you're quoting is merely one form of that.

The most pervasive form seems to be the idea among the greens that if the government merely legislates that cars will need to get a certain ridiculously high mpg down the road, automakers will invent a way to do it without making shortcuts that sacrifice safety features.

Carly can just call her a pussy and laugh at her post debate as the VP candidate. Then she can bring it up in the VP debate. If Billary goes for the "Angry Hillary" strategy then I think Carly can come back at her.

See, when a light bulb is inefficient in making light, it makes heat. If it's consuming 60W, it's going to produce 60W of something -- and light and heat are the main options (I suppose it could vibrate slightly....).

So if you swap out all the 60W incandescent bulbs for 15W LEDs with the same light output, you're going to have to run your HVAC system on "heat" more to make up for the 45W per bulb you used to have nicely distributed throughout your house where people were active.

Since your HVAC system is designed to heat your entire house -- including darkened rooms -- that means that you'll heat the entire house to 68 when you used to heat the entire house to 66 and rely on the room's lighting to get you to the 68 that made you comfortable.

If you removed the cronies and idiots from Washington, DC, no institution there could raise a quorum.

335 Something popped into my head earlier today - the story of a university president who arranged a golf outing with a very wealthy alumnus so that he could ask the alumnus for a large contribution. The alumnus asked about the school's priorities, wasn't satisfied with the answers, and declined to make a contribution. The university president then, without naming the alumnus, wrote about this in the alumni magazine and was very unflattering to the alumnus. The alumnus recognized that he was the subject of the story and outed himself by writing a response, explaining once again why he had declined the contribution. His general reason was that he wouldn't use the the wealth he had acquired through capitalism to support a university that didn't itself support capitalism.

Does anybody remember this incident? The university president was a real douchebag - he wrote about how he wasn't looking forward to the golf outing because he would have to spend the day with someone whose political views were so contrary to his, how the wealthy alumnus confirmed his belief that conservatives are anti-intellectual, etc.

It is very-much ill-timed....because if it hadn't been the national policy through this last oil bubble, we'd've creamed the Saudi ticks. Instead, we allowed them maximum skim and are only coming after-the-fact to set market forces at work.

But that doesn't mean it's not the right thing to do. Take a quick read through Article 1, section 8 of the Constitution and you'll note that there is nothing that says the Feds can ban any commerce, IIRC. All these oil export and light-bulb bans strike me as unConstitutional on their face.

359 Have any of you heard of the saga of the Texas plumber whose old F-250 ended up in ISIS hands, with an AAA gun mounted in the back? The decal wasn't removed, and had the plumbing company's name and phone number still on the side. The poor guy ended up getting death threats and his business suffered and he's now suing the dealer he traded with for not removing the decals.

The interesting question, which a new article at ZH goes into, is just how the hell do American pickup trucks end up in ISIS hands. Well, the answer is Turkey (again).

The used truck was bought by some outfit and exported to Turkey, through the same Turkish port that is likely shipping out ISIS oil.

Yet more evidence that Turkey is actually helping ISIS.

Okay, we're going to "trade" ( I put that in quotes, because .... well, I don't think too much of dealer "deals" like this), and you, the dealer agree to remove my custom decals before you dispose of the old truck, however you do.

I can see such agreements being a common thing. I've bought used trucks (single axle, F-750 class) that were commercial vehicles, and you could see various decals removed, the old lettering being sometimes still visible and I think it's the buyers who do the removing usually.

399 390 cthulhu, I know about Glen Bell. From what I've read it sounds like he was a stand-up guy. He was a marine in WW2 to boot.

He actually started up, or had to do with the start-up, of quite a few fast food establishments: Taco Tia (which he founded *before* Taco Bell), Taco Bell, Del Taco, and Wienerschnitzel.

405 cthulhu, according to Gustavo Arellano's book Taco USA, Bell had a burger place in San Bernardino across the corner from a place called... Mitla Cafe.

Bell fell in love with their hard-shell tacos (this was circa the late 1950s) and actually decided, when I start up my Mexican place, *this* is how I want my tacos to look, smell and taste.

Well, according to Taco USA, Bell came to Mitla *so often,* the owners finally took him into the kitchen and said "we know you have plans to start up a Mexican place and want to use our taco recipe, so here it is." And they showed him exactly how they made their tacos and some other Mexi dishes to him.

BTW, apparently as a thank-you, Bell never placed a Taco Bell too close to Mitla Cafe, because 50 years later, it's still there.

The chemical used to make gas smell is sulfer based. A Chalcogen is a congener of oxygen (i.e. sulfer, selenium or tellerium). While the oxygen compounds smell like, for example, bubble gum, a chemical that replaces the oxygen with its congeners smells like rotten eggs.

A pnictogen is a compound with nitrogen or it's congeners (phosphorus, arsnic, antimony, or bismuth). They are reminicend of s**t and the rot of a dead body.

There's also a story in Arellano's book that one time, I think while working at his first Taco Tia, Bell found out the street he was on was going to host a parade. "Oh boy," Bell thought, "this is my big break!" So he went and ordered a freakin' metric ton of taco shells, meat, veggies, the works... and then sold barely a sliver of it the day of the big parade.

Did Bell get upset, feel sorry for himself? No, he went right to work putting out some ads and advertising his 3-for-1 taco specials, kept on keepin' on, and eventually sold all the excess inventory. But it sounds to me like he definitely had a military, get-it-done, keep-your-chin-up attitude about business and entrepreneurship. I would have loved to meet him too.

This story is actually more than that. This story shows that honor elevates the free market beyond awesome. If it were just a free market, the Mitla guys would have hidden their recipes or negotiated a royalty -- instead, they generously showed Bell everything....and he generously made space around their cafes while rapidly expanding across the country. The free market provides resources that allow people to be more gracious and generous than any other system.....but people still have to take that step.

Pure methane is odorless. So nothing can smell "like methane". The methane that is distributed in your neighborhood to burn in your furnace or range has been odorized with methyl mercaptan, which is very smelly stuff indeed. They odorize it so you can smell leaking gas.

Here's something really weird at my place, almost supernatural:

Long long before I moved into my home, way back in the '60s (or maybe early '70s) some previous owner (or maybe their kids) put two stickers/decals in the shape of daisies on a south-facing window.

The stickers, just made of paper or maybe vinyl or something, stayed adhered to that window for about 30 or 40 years.

When, much much later, I moved in, I wanted those stickers removed, but I didn't want to scratch the glass in any way, so I carefully removed them with no sharp tools at all, just some Ronsonol lighter fluid to dissolve the hardened glue, and a soft lifting of the decals away from the glass, and then a final cleaning with Windex and a soft cloth.

Success. The stickers were absolutely 100% removed. And over the subsequent months and years, that window has been washed and cleaned many many times, and one can see not the slightest trace that there were ever any stickers on it.

How is this boring tale of any interest? Well, here's where it gets bizarre.

One or two days every year, when the conditions are just right -- it has to be very very cold outside, and also almost no humidity, bone dry, while inside i need to be doing something steamy in the kitchen a couple rooms away, just at sunset, if you look at that window -- you can see the ghostly outline of the daisies!

My only explanation is that the stickers somehow altered the molecular structure of the glass underneath them in such a way that under normal conditions the glass appears perfectly translucent, but when things are just right, the variation of the refraction index from the inside of the glass as opposed to the outside is just different enough that one can still see the "template" of the object that caused the change (i.e. the daisy stickers).

Any scientists care to speculate?

Posted by: Vic-we have no party at December 16, 2015 04:00 AM (t2KH5)

450 447,

My first guess would be the decal did not affect the glass except by depositing polymers and other organics on and beneath the glass surface.

A UV light or IR light might reveal the deposits.

My second would be tha it did affect the glass itself. Glass can flow so the decal could have shaped the surface of the glass by affecting heat flow through the glass.

Third: the adhesive could have altered the pH on the surface and etched the glass on a microscopic level.

Glass devitrifies over time, and also often acquires a purple tint due to iron molecules in the glass being affected by ultraviolet light. This is often seen in old bottles and glass insulators, but I have glass lenses off 1950's cars which show a purple tint. So I'd say, some otherwise imperceptible change in the microstructure of the glass, which was blocked or slowed by the stickers, leading to basically, ghost images of the stickers. Consider the glass having acted as a crude photographic plate.

Would Obama block this? Exporting oil will only lead to more global warming, after all.

Morning, Peeps?

461 I mean Morning, Peeps!

462 What about Venezuelan oil? IIRC, very few refineries can handle that sulfur rich sludge.

Are we currently prevented from importing Venezuelan crude and then exporting refined products?

463 G'morning, all.

464 My only explanation is that the stickers somehow altered the molecular structure of the glass underneath them in such a way that under normal conditions the glass appears perfectly translucent, but when things are just right, the variation of the refraction index from the inside of the glass as opposed to the outside is just different enough that one can still see the "template" of the object that caused the change (i.e. the daisy stickers).

Glass isn't perfectly clear. The years of sunlight changed the glass outside the stickers and didn't change the glass behind the stickers.

zombie doesn't say where this house is located, but has said she lives in the S.F. Bay Area, so I would surmise the "daisy" pattern on the glass has survived since the '70s because Haight-Ashbury.

468 Dear God, they're broadcasting CNN propaganda at the gas pump now! This is what American fascism looks like. 1984 plus Terry Gilliam's Brazil and you can get nachos and Slurpees.

469 Profound jack handyesque thought for the day.

Zombie thought that the glass protected by stickers was changed, and the unprotected glass remained the same, when it was really the reverse. Zombie has experienced a literal Overton window.

Liberals generally try to push the envelope by saying that they are moderate and cconservative radicals are the ones trying to change things.

Ummm...not so sure about this.

Have you heard any of what Shrillery and Crazy Uncle Bernie are saying? Nothing "moderate" there, just stale bullshit punish-the-rich rhetoric left over from the Red Diaper brigade. If voters buy their tired act, there will be some changes, believe you me.

Haven't heard any of the "conservative" wannabe-Preezys use the word "revolution," but Crazy Uncle has.
