Une commente from a Frenchman on the results of this weekend's second and final round of regional elections, with the "anti-immigration" National Front being shut out:

"We have two major parties. The blue one is the fiscally liberal right, who want more immigrants in so wages stay low, housing high and there is not too much syndicalism (unionism). The pink one are the socialists, that for some reason want the exact same thing than the right but also take your money so they can buy votes with welfare. They united so the FN could not get any power."

This is going to seem very familiar to you next year.

49 In regard to all the leftists who argue that we need to let in Syrian refugees because "Steve Jobs' father was a Syrian," I ask this:

Aren't you lefties supposed to be the people who believe in science? Because science tells us that people are the product of both their biology and their environment. Steve Jobs' biological father may have been a Syrian immigrant, but he was never around Steve as a child, and had no influence on him as an adult.

The people who raised Steve from infancy, told him repeatedly that he was special, instilled his work ethic and values, sacrificed so that Steve could attend better schools, spent time building things with Steve in the garage -- those people were white, Christian, Americans named Paul and Clara Jobs.

The fact is -- based on the science you leftists claim to revere -- that Steve Jobs likely wouldn't have been the same Steve Jobs he became without the environmental influences provided by American Christians Paul and Clara Jobs. Had Steve Jobs been raised by his Syrian-immigrant "father," he might have ended up becoming a master criminal (or drug-addicted stoner loser, or annoying SJW academic, etc.), instead of a business visionary. Or Steve might have ended up as a hotel worker in Reno, Nevada (which is what his Syrian "father" is currently doing).

Also curious in the "Steve Jobs was the son of a Syrian migrant" argument is the missing element of Steve Jobs' biological mother. She was not Syrian. She was an American of German-Catholic descent. And the biological mother also birthed (and raised) a daughter by the Syrian Jindali, and that daughter became a successful novelist. Maybe the real genius in the Steve Jobs' biological lineage was the American mother, and not the Syrian father who was MIA from both his kids' lives.

Anyway, that's my $.02. Just getting really tired of all these lefties who assume that Steve Jobs would have been and done exactly the same things he did if he'd been raised by his one Syrian biological parent.

Seattle Considers Measure to Let Uber and Lyft Drivers Unionize

the App-Based Drivers Association will become the first organization of on-demand contract workers in the United States to win an explicit right to unionize, albeit one that could run afoul of federal law.

Uber has two potential legal arguments against the measure if it passes. The first is that federal law reigns supreme when it comes to organizing, rendering a city ordinance on the subject essentially null and void. The second is that collective bargaining by independent contractors would amount to illegal price-fixing under antitrust law.

http://tinyurl.com/pv8oc5s

Wouldn't necessarily count on our fee/tax legal system upholding the employee/contractor distinction in any rational or consistent fashion.

It was Steve Jobs' father Paul Jobs who got Steve interested in electronics. As a kid, Steve loved to go out to the garage and tinker around with his dad. Steve loved to spend time with his dad when his dad was fixing cars in their garage, and Steve especially loved building things in the garage with his dad. Paul Jobs had a strong sense of morals, and an even stronger work ethic. He was a big part of the reason why Steve Jobs became the man he became. 125 Kind of funny that Norman Lear should say that, because Trump sorta reminds me of Archie Bunker.

When 'All in the Family' came out back in 1970 or whenever, CBS hired extra phone operators to handle the expected onslaught of outraged viewers over the character of Archie Bunker. They thought his outrageous viewpoints would shock and horrify mainstream audiences. They thought Meathead was going to be the hero of the series.

They received a grand total of two complaint calls when the show aired. Archie Bunker went on to be a national hero and beloved character. And no one could stand Meathead.

Norman Lear and the media elites understand Americans no better now than they did in 1970.

Posted by: V the K at December 14, 2015 07:46 AM

They understood it pretty well back then!

One of the driving forces behind the show's popularity was the guilty pleasure of watching characters that were supposedly non-PC. People talked about the outcry against the show, the calls and letters CBS was allegedly getting, and felt smug and hip because they understood Lear's joke.

The cost of hiring two extra people to fend off the outraged proles -- if they really did hire anyone -- was more than offset by the publicity value.

Darryl Zanuck would have understood that.

Yes, there's no doubt Steve Jobs would still have been very intelligent, but how he would have used that intelligence is anybody's guess.

He might have ended up a drugged-up loser. We know Steve liked using drugs (he particularly liked LSD). The drug use pissed off his dad Paul Jobs, which may be the reason Steve didn't go down that path too far. Steve respected his father Paul, and wanted his approval. When he got his first factory (much of which he'd designed himself) one of the first things Steve did was call his dad Paul Jobs so his dad could come and see what he'd done. Steve's relationship with Paul Jobs and their shared interest in electronics and building things was key to Steve Jobs' development into the man he became. It's insulting to Paul Jobs' memory to pretend otherwise.

I think you're good, morally. And I am a well-known bastion of morality.

Related story: back when Napster was a thing we got an e-mail from the general counsel of the company saying to delete any music we had downloaded onto company laptops.

Being a smartass, I e-mailed back and said "what about fair use? Copies of albums I already own legally?'.

He called me. "I don't care if you download the entire Beatles catalog, I just have to be on record as being against it".

263 WallStJrnl reports that this week, the last deep-pit coal mine in Britain will close.
A triumph of alternative energy, one might think? Oh no, UK still relies on coal for at least a third of energy production. They're importing coal. From Russia.

Seems to me that the destruction of the coal industry in Britain, France and Germany, 40 years ago, had little to do with natural gas and everything to do with what political pests the miners' unions had made of themselves. Thanks, Zola.

And yes, the US is exporting coal, bigtime, as "domestic consumption" plummets, "necessarily." You thought digging for old Mr Peabody was rough? Wait until you work for the Chinese. If you work at all. Coal mines for sale, fire sale prices.

272 RIP Tibor Rubin

http://tinyurl.com/hxzqfst

Rubin, 76, was born in Hungary and sent to the Nazi concentration camp in Mauthausen, Austria, as a boy. His parents and a sister were killed during their imprisonment, but Rubin survived for 14 months and was freed when American soldiers stormed the camp.

He swore to pay back the country for that freedom, and eventually emigrated to America and joined the Army. He was sent to North Korea in 1950 with the 8th Cavalry Regiment and distinguished himself for bravery in battle during several firefights around Pusan.

In once instance, Army officials said, he took hold of his unit's only remaining weapon - a machine gun whose previous three gunners had been shot - and held off an advancing force long enough for his troops to retreat.

276 The Cross That Wasn't There

For many years I operated a Christian bookstore beside our home north of Toronto, and on our lawn a large neon sign called to travelers on the busy highway that passes our house. We were accustomed to strangers dropping in.
But one July evening a man drove in and called my husband over to his car. He thrust the car keys into my husband's hands, saying, "Here take these. I'm not fit to be on the road." He confessed that he'd had several drinks.
After talking for an hour, the man said, "I need help." My husband called up an organization that helps alcoholics, and two men from a nearby chapter came by. Later, having returned from work, I made a pot of coffee, and we sat around the kitchen table, talking.
He'd been on business at the beach thirty miles to our north. He was headed home, sixty-five miles to the south of us. "I could have killed someone," he repeated over and over. I thanked God that he had reached our house safely.
In the course of conversation I asked the man if he was familiar with this area.
"No," he said.
"Do you travel this way much?"
"No."
I was perplexed, "Why did you stop at our house?"
"The sign," he said. "I saw the sign on your lawn."
The sign? How could he have seen the sign? I had given it away when I closed the bookstore . . . nearly three years before. It was gone. There was nothing left of the yellow neon cross that once stood on our lawn.
Or was there?

Oh hell yes. For those of us who actually made a living in IT back in the day, Apple was a joke. Indeed, as a computer company, from the time it was founded up until Jobs came back to Apple in the, I think, late 1990s/early 2000s, with an idea for this thing called the "iPod", the company was always just barely hanging on. The market for Apple computers was always very small, limited to that certain little group of well heeled (that is, they actually could afford the damn things) uber geeks, and two relatively small niche markets, the education establishment and the media. The most charitable thing that could be said for Apple computers was that they were "idiot proof", which given the groups that liked them is perhaps not so hard to understand. And there the matter stood for many years, with Apple just hanging on as a company.

Then when Steve Jobs shows back up, with his one share of Apple stock, and the idea for the iPod (and later the iPhone and iPad), that is what saved the company and made it the powerhouse it is today. Indeed the only reason their computers have the wider popularity they do today is, along with the brand name association with their "i" devices, is that they finally made the user interface and software more congruent with the Intel based machines that have dominated the market over the past 30 or so years. That, and they did reduce their prices a little.

Courts have ruled that an IP address does not equal an individual. So you could go out for the evening and your babysitter could use your Wi-Fi to download something. Or make terror threats. You can't be held responsible for what someone else does anymore than Starbucks can be held responsible for what their customers do on their free Wi-Fi.

So you're probably free from prosecution. Personally it makes me a little uncomfortable.

I suspect, seeing how rapidly some movies appear online, that movie studios are uploading stuff to generate 'buzz' that will drive traffic to movie theaters. Their really is -- unless you're spending thousands -- nothing like the movie theater experience.
