12 Courbet, ah back when a commie could be a realist, in painting at least.
Best known for his depictions of female genitalia and lesbians. NTTAWWT.
Member of the Paris Commune. Probably first saw snow when he was exiled to Switzerland.

18 Whoooo! Sledding! And the traditional "down-the-hill-and-stop-before-you-break-the-ice-and-plunge-into-freezing-water" course as well!

All that is missing is the other slope with the woven wire sheep fence topped with rusty barbed wire and interwoven with wild rose. Good times and high velocity!

Their faith also afforded them the ability to believe in the tactical use of "Death Blossom", a battle technique observed by US trainers in Iraq. The theory of "Death Blossom" is that when attacked, you shoot and every possible direction and God will decide who is innocent.

I remember reading the accounts of several US troops who taught Iraqis marksmanship that they'd pick it up fairly well, learning the massively deadly American doctrine of accurate aimed, semiauto fire. The moment the American troops weren't rapping them upside the head, the Iraqis would all of the sudden turn into Imperial Stormtroopers, sprayin' 'n' prayin' at full auto from the hip, like it was burned into their DNA.

What was surprising was that George put up two clips of parents of Benghazi victims accusing Hillary of lying to them about the video as being the cause, after George setup that Hillary had told daughter Chelsea and other insiders that it was actually a pre-meditated terrorist attack.

Hillary literally blamed it on the "fog of war."

271 I usually don't listen to Obama speeches but did last night.
I can never get that time back again.

First, given the noise from the White House, the gun control stuff was just that .. noise. There had already been a bipartisan rejection of using the "no-fly' list in the House with 47 Democrats saying .. NO.

I really thought he would try to go further.

But what was really surprising was that I'm sure Progressives were equally disappointed .

This speech was completely devoid to any new ideas. It could have been delivered two weeks ago to an empty room with equal results.

We all know he doesn't want to get into a ground war, but the air campaign is completely lackluster. So lackluster that many Iraqis think the US is siding with ISIL. If he had any new ideas, I thought they would enhance the air campaign, perhaps by telling us that a dozen B-52s had just flattened Raqqa.

If you take the long view, it's actually easy to see that Obama hasn't had a new ideas since he (or Bill Ayers) wrote his last book.

315 I've watched a few random sitcom-like series on Netflix lately. BBC or Australian for the most part. "Dreamland" gets a solid B, The IT Crowd also above average. Black Books gets a C, but has a few almost laugh out loud lines each episode, and Death in Paradise gets a C-, would have gotten a B+ for the first two seasons, but the third one just sucks (they replaced the lead actor). So, if you end up with hours to kill, anyone of those might make a good diversion.

I'm mystified that they haven't struck at our soft target electrical power delivery system. It should be pretty easy to identify all substations that feed a particular city and develop a plan to take it out in a coordinated attack. Hell, even a solo jihadi could do a lot of damage.

And if they want to kill people, certainly most Congressmen, Judges and assorted executive flunkies are easy to track.

440 OK, this is just a cultural note on the peculiarities of the Krautish sensibility.

Saw a thing on Twitter: GERMANY -BREAKING: Refugee shouting "ALLAH AKHBAR" attacks several police officers on a train in #Osnabrük (sic).

I tend to check out Krautish stories for verification and my amusement. So, yes, a Moroccan refugee went batshit on three police officers on a train, biting and kicking them.

What amused me is that the Krautish headline did not identify him first as a refugee, but as a "Schwarzfahrer".

German transit works on the honor system. You're expected to have a valid pass or ticket. Nobody checks when you get on a tram. Periodically conductors come by to check, but it's just a spot check.

If you are found not to have a ticket, it's schwarzfahren (riding black) and they don't take kindly to that. I just find it cute that a system based on obedience and cooperation gets outraged enough to call him out as a Schwarzfaher in the headline and only mention the Allahu Akhbar stuff in the body of the story.

447 >>Here's the problem I have with that, knowing you are on some gov't list doesn't mean you can get it fixed.

Apparently there's something like 280,000 people on the "no-fly list" - only known because of an ACLU suit against DHS filed in 2010.

Think about that - we really have close to 300K known terrorists? No. We likely have a sloppy process for getting on the list, and any even less attentive maintenance of the list after a name is added (do they ever revisit? how do you get off it).
It's a sham, and if this was linked to guns, you can bet the list would be in the millions of names within months.

Well, I'm of the opinion that requiring a license to carry a weapon, concealed or not, is unconstitutional. But the black-robed retards who think a fine is a tax don't seem to agree with me.

In any case: not all licenses are universally portable and I'm not sure you can argue that just because one license is universally portable that another should be. But, yeah, I definitely would like the idea of universal reciprocity for concealed carry. Now Vermont's laws apply to everyone!

I imagined that the burnt out Tenth Doctor found himself on the California coast and somehow got embroiled in an investigation there, with cross-cultural misunderstandings and a haunted, haunted past.

Instead it was a shot for shot remake of Broadchurch, just without the pesky British accents. I almost watched it to see Nick Nolte in the role of Finch, but that wasn't enticement enough.

I didn't see it as looking down on the locals, but in a sense it illustrates how a 2 hour movie cannot capture the magic and the flavor of several hours of unfolding story in a tv series.

The movie and both seasons of the show, they take familiar concepts to viewers, generally low-life and/or dangerous scumbag outsiders, and put them in that setting with the locals. Who may or may not be caricatures.

For example, I think Kirsten Dunst's Peg this season is a little over the top, but the guy who plays her husband, Ed the Butcher, I spot on. It works.

You just know things are not going to end well for Mike Milligan, but good golly it's fun watching it unfold.

You can't do that in a 2 hour movie. The medium is dying, and I'm not sure it quite knows it yet.

515 Any why would a DL be more valid than a Doctor's license? Or a marriage license be more valid than my lawyers?

Posted by: rickb223 at December 07, 2015 11:55 AM (MZVOx)

In the case of driving licenses, congress passed laws specifically creating universal reciprocity, predicated on all states having certain standards they must apply.

Medical and law licenses are not subject to the same standards, and so are not portable unless the state itself says they are.

Marriage is a bit of a mess, yes, but recall that Utah was not allowed to join the US until they had explicitly rejected polygamy (because the reciprocity there would be problematic to say the least).

My argument is that until and unless Vermont actually places (frankly unconstitutional) restrictions on carry, other states (to say nothing of congress) are not going to allow universal reciprocity. I mean, I'm in favour of universal, unrestricted carry, but it ain't gonna happen.

532 Whitechapel was a separate (British) series. Its first season was a Jack the Ripper copycat working contemporary Whitechapel killing as close to the original sites and using the same methods. A new toff with OCD is made commander of the area's lax Major Crimes squad with its grizzled old veteran sergeant. (The sgt is the cabbie poisoner from the Holmes A Study in Pink BTW!) There's also a bookish Ripperologist archivist who helps in the investigation.

I enjoyed them but by the most-recent season they've been pushing the paranormal more than I care for even if it is obvious what's driving the squads' delusions.

534 Read that carefully: "Congress should act to make sure no one on a no-fly list is able to buy a gun" -- the real aim being that no one on any of these lists should be able to buy a gun.

My other question: what's the prize going to be for the ten or twentieth or hundred millionth person put on one of those lists? A whistle so you can call for help when your house is broken into? Ooh, I know, you'll receive a full color sign for your front yard that reads "Gun Free Zone"
Posted by: Mallflower at December 07, 2015 12:14 PM (qSIlh)

It's a simple power grab. Change the burden of proof, from a situation where you have to be tried in a court of law, and convicted before you lose you rights to buy a gun. To one where some bureaucrat who puts your name on a list gets to decide.

From We the People, to We the Government.

That's all it is.

A little girl with hearing problems told Santa Claus what she wants for Christmas using sign language. The heartwarming scene was captured by an onlooker at Middlesbroughs Cleveland Centre on November 5 and was posted to YouTube.

At the start of the touching 40 second clip, the unnamed tot enters the present-filled grotto and sits on Father Christmas' knee wearing a festive hat. In the short video, the girl's mum is then heard telling Santa: 'Sorry, she can't talk very well.'

The kind Kris Kringle then asks if she uses sign language to which her mother replies: 'Yeah, she does animals and things like that.' Saint Nick then taps the adorable girl's arm to get her attention before using hand signals to ask her what she wants for Christmas.

In what appeared to be a scene straight out of the tear-jerking movie Miracle on 34th Street, Santa and his excited little pal are then seen conversing in sign language.

Bullet button. A button requiring depression with a tool to release the magazine. Most often by using a bullet tip.

Most non-California AR's use a button that you depress. Cali, in its infinite wisdom, decided to make the magazine release button requiring a tool to release.

Newer Assault Rifles in California have to have a special 'button' for magazine release... makes it hard to switch magazines quickly.

With the 10 round max Mags... it was supposed to limit mass shootings...

Problem is that its easy to modify...

(Real reason they did it was to drive up the price of Assault Rifles in Calif, as its now a special model to be legal here)...

Link from 12/4 ONT

https://pjmedia.com/trending/2015/12/4/ atf-says-weapons-used-in-san-bernardino- shooting-were-illegal-in-california

A "bullet button" refers to the requirement that CA-legal semiauto rifles not have a detachable magazine. From my ass, a "bullet button" is an ingenious way to skirt this requirement by forcing the user to use a bullet or other "tool" to remove the magazine, rather than just use his/her finger.

The SB shooters' rifles were modified after legal sale to remove this "bullet button" nuisance, and restore the finger-only removable mags.

My city has its very own Rachael Corrie! A few excerpts:

"I totally panicked. I noticed every deep-seated, racist-leaning (that a person with) white privilege grows up with as my mind started forming scenarios without my control," she wrote. "ISIS just said they wanted to target New York. I'm going from New York to Paris. Security barely looked at me and these boys could have snuck through, and what if they blow the plane up."
...
"I was really anxious and worried," she said. "But all of that totally disappeared as soon as I arrived in Europe, because people over here, they don't react to things the same way that Americans do."

You can download an .iso file of Mint, and burn it to a disk, or even a memory stick, and boot and run it form there, to try it out. Very, very easy. I did it a few months ago, and it was the easiest OS install I have ever done, bar none. Mint has a GUI that is very friendly for Windows-habituated folks like me. If I wasn't obligated to run various flavors of Windows for work-related programs, i would run all my PC's on Mint in a heartbeat.

Impossible. I hear every day about how practicing muslims are the most patriotic of all Americans.

And how we should be more like them.

690 Wow, still on the morning's art thread I see!

Not in love with the composition, the trees kind of chop up the canvas in a funny way. But I like Courbet's rendering of snow and the overall moodiness of the scene. Fitting for the date in infamy and the overall national mood today.

I used to live around the corner from a Coptic-owned gas station. They quickly, but subtly solved the problem by leaving a Coptic Bible prominently displayed on the counter in the store.

699 608 Crazy. Go after the weakest link. The "delivering agencies" Catholic Charities or the Council of American Bishops or the whatever and ask them over and over. Taxpayers money is being used to support their role in this and they should be held accountable if the Feds will not. Same for local resettlement offices. There are only so many.
