Quote of the Day II

When the left dissents, it's patriotism even though it's just the opposite. When the right dissents, it's insurrection even though it's just the opposite.

-- commenter Ralph at The Truth About Guns

Quote of the Day III - Same as It Always Was Except More So

The economy of Greece is in shambles.  Internal rebellions have engulfed Libya, Syria, and Egypt, with outsiders and foreign warriors fanning the flames.  Turkey fears it will become involved, as does Israel. Jordan is crowded with refugees.  Iran is bellicose and threatening, while Iraq is in turmoil.  AD 2031? Yes.  But it was also the situation in 1177 BC, more than three thousand years ago, when Bronze Age Mediterranean civilizations collapsed one after the other, changing forever the course and the future of the Western world.  It was a pivotal moment in history - a turning point for the ancient world.

-- Eric H. Cline in 1177 B.C. The Year Civilization Collapsed

Comment of the Day - On The Seattle Corporate Jesus and the 70K Minimum Wage

People left, were bitter that the bottom rung got a massive raise over night but they didn't, saw no future or incentive to work harder and left, etc. You know, basic Capitalism 101 and why these "experiments" always end with people fighting over toilet paper.

Why Obama is Wrong About These Mass Shootings Not Happening in Other Countries

Willful deliberate ignorance.

The French have witnessed three mass public shootings this year. January saw two attacks, one on the Charlie Hebdo magazine and another on a Paris supermarket. In the November attacks, 129 people were killed and 352 were injured. In 2015, France suffered more casualties than the U.S. has suffered during Obama's entire presidency (508 to 394).

Obama also overlooks Norway, where Anders Behring Breivik used a gun to kill 67 people and wound 110 others. Still others were killed by bombs that Breivik detonated. Of the four worst K-12 school shootings, three have occurred in Europe. Germany had two of these - one in 2002 at Erfut and another in 2009 at Winnenden, with a total death toll of 34.

Obama isn't correct even if he meant the frequency of fatalities or attacks. Many European countries actually have higher rates of death from public shootings that resulted in four or more murders. It's simply a matter of adjusting for America's much larger population.

Yeah, that's the problem. That's why we lost Iraq - not a political bugout, not a deliberate decision to throw victory away by an Administration that's ever pleased to see Islamists advance, but because we lacked the woman's touch in every rifle squad.

That's why the Taliban are back in Konduz, where SF, AFSOC and the payback of General Dostum's Uzbeks and Daoud's Tajiks of the Northern Alliance got rid of them in November 2001, and they stayed out until the current kinder, gentler social engineers took charge and ushered them back in.

That's why we not only don't have the subs to shadow Russian boomers, we don't have the sonobuoy network that we had in 1985, because we sank (no pun intended) the money into social engineering and a gossamer "peace dividend".

But hey, careers for chicks, because if you have an Army you won't let fight you might as well make it an alternative to AFDC for fat single moms.

The Marines were the only service to actually test the hypotheses that sexual dimorphism in homo sapiens has no military application, and that women could therefore perform as well as men. The Marine tests found that they couldn't keep up or pack their weight.

So while the economic explanation rings true, "we got richer" doesn't seem to be enough. Rather, we have to look at the specific way in which we got richer. Specifically, we need to look at the rise of the extensively educated professional class.

One of the things you might notice about novels from the 1950s and 1960s is how many of the affluent people in them are engaged in trades like selling insurance, manufacturing some dull but necessary article, or running a car lot. These people are rarely the heroes of the novel (even then, writers found it much easier to imagine themselves as doctors or lawyers or, for that matter, as rough-hewn working-class types than as regional office-supplies distributors). But it is telling that those novelists took for granted that the writers and professionals would be intermingled with the makers and sellers, something that comes across as distinctly odd to the residents of the modern coastal corridors. Few of my friends even run a budget outside their own households, much less a profit and loss statement, and very few indeed have ever gone on a sales call.

The change in our novels reflects a change in our economy: the decline of manufacturing; the rise in the number and remuneration of professional jobs; the increase in the size of service firms; and the resulting shift toward salaried positions rather than partnerships or sole proprietorships. As a result of these changes, the upper middle class has found itself in a curious bind. In some ways, its economic fortunes are better than ever: They make more money, more reliably, than they used to. But because they are employees rather than business owners, they have a very limited ability to pass their good fortune onto their children.

A parent who had built a good insurance business in 1950 had a valuable asset that he could hand over to his sons. As long as they put a full day in at the office, they too would be able to take home a good living. That calculation applies across a broad range of manufacturing, retail and service businesses that used to form the economic bulwark of the prosperous middle class.

An MBA, however, is not heritable. Neither is a law degree, a medical degree, or any of the other educational credentials that form the barriers to entry into today's upper middle class. Those have to be earned by the child, from strangers -- and with inequality rising, the competition for those credentials just keeps getting fiercer.

82 From the bee article:
"So if CCD is wiping out close to a third of all honeybee colonies a year, how are their numbers rising? "

I have actually had an online exchange with a guy (?) who continued to bleat that the polar bear population was not sustainable. I pointed out that the polar bear population has been steadily increasing for 40 years.

"That doesn't matter", he says, "it's unsustainable".

I ask how it can be that the population is simultaneously growing, and yet is 'unsustainable'.

His reply? I do not 'get' 'sustainable'.

It's like the AGW argument. Pointing out there is no increase just doesn't work.

86 Crazy as that ending was, it wasn't even the craziest I've seen this year, it's only 3rd.

#2 was last week's walk off blocked field goal in the Ravens/Browns game, and #1 was the Jacksonville FG to beat the Ravens-one that was made on an extra play with zeros on the clock just like tonight, except in that one the NFL came out the next day and said the whole last play sequence should never have happened.

"I don't get the point of 1177 B.C."

Cline proposes a ... synthesis(?) ... of causes for the end of most civilizations in the eastern Mediterranean: military action and earthquakes and climate change. Climate change is slow; see The Sahara Desert. How many earthquakes would be needed to level Hattusas, Mycenae, Ugarit, Knossos and others, while leaving Egypt untouched?

For a different perspective and explanation, specifically a purely military explanation (which seems to be very much closer to the truth), read :

I've always been a bit skeptical about that, since they already own about 1/6 of the earth's surface.

Maybe mess around on the edges a little (Crimea, eastern Ukraine) but stay away from the big fights, at least over land.

They can see the individual members of NATO are coming apart, so why give all something to unite over?

Still don't feel any connection, tonight, with anything in the real world. I used to think that a store that sold used books, or Christmas stuff, or whatever, should and should have an economy in which survival of the marginal was not only possible but encouraged.

But we're in the Liberal Economy now. Only things tied to Progressivism will be allowed to flourish...not through genuine interest, but through government grants. Because. That's why, because!

I'll continue to paint Lesser Giger, because that's what I do.

And I'll confess that I'm too drunk to go further. Hey, I could die from a heart-attack! That's pretty cool, right? Don't answer that.

I got a text on my phone this morning from a number I didn't recognize. I googled (well, technically, I binged it, but close enough) the number tonight, and I didn't recognize the results I got or anything, but whatever.

The scare came when I then decided to try binging my own phone number, just to see what came up. The top result gave me my full name, my address, my phone number, my birthdate, and my voter registration info.

I've googled/binged my own name before, and that didn't yield nearly as much info on me as searching for my phone number just did.

228 Okay, here's a quandary for the art of Statesmanship, protocol and custom.

So, when the Ear Leader does eventually attain room temperature, just how does the Executive order a proper Muslim funeral, what with having to dog-trot the damned casket with the un-embalmed body to it's hole in the ground, preferably while the body is still twitching?

And let's not forget the ceremonial dumping of the corpse-man, as we saw with the Ayatoilet Kumhmeni's fun eral over in I ran, They ran, We all ran?

If I were President at that time, I'd arrange a twenty-one pig salute, but that's more than Ear Leader (from behind) is actually due.

His proper memorial would be a dog crapping into his open grave.

Now then, let our resident protocol Morons hold forth on the more refined elements of the proper Mooslime Services for a departed Ear Leader.

All for Snackbar!

258 A high school friend of mine was absolutely spastic with guns, and after one little incident, I never would be anywhere near the guy with a gun. We were carrying shotguns, barrels up over our shoulders, walking along the edge of a field.

Blam! went his shotgun, making me jump and him drop the gun. What the fuck did you do, I screamed? He sheepishly said he was pulling the trigger, thinking the safety was on. He had also been pushing that safety button back and forth, on and off.

I left, and never, ever, went shooting or did anything with him with a gun again. I think I hurt his feelings, but it just spooked the hell out of me.

After that, I started always carrying my own with the barrel pointed down at the ground all the time.

Me, I'm aware all the time with guns, never assuming anything, and it's just automatic. With someone like that guy, it wasn't.

I think spoofing Caller ID is now a federal offense, so anyone who does that is obviously not legitimate in the least.

294 Yes, I am privileged by my genetics;

My parents gave me:

A nice smile with dimples, long eyelashes from Dad, nice legs from Mom, a good brain from both, and so on and so forth. My white skin is just an incidental.

The most important things that I am privileged to have from them in no particular order:

1. Good manners
2. A love of reading thanks to Mom and her endless patience in listening to me read and taking me to the library.
3. Honesty
4. A grateful heart
5. Love
6. A good work ethic
7. Education
8. Faith, hope, and charity
9. A sense of humor particularly when it comes to myself
10. Curiosity
11. Ten or twenty thousand other things to numerous to mention.

My parents had no choice in the genetic gifts they bestowed upon me, but, those other things, they worked their fingers to the bone to see that I and my two sisters had them. Any parent of any ethnicity can bestow those same gifts on their children.

I will happily own up to Fabulously Good Parents Privilege because I truly do know that not everyone gets what I got, but, White Privilege, please, that's just more useless racism working to pin the blame on accidents of birth. I OPT OUT OF THAT CRAP!

I get that. I truly do. I just wish that for once in her Hollywood Privilege life she would admit her mistakes and say I'm sorry. A couple of years ago, there was a lot of press about how she was going to finally apologize, she didn't. Instead, she released a mealymouthed roundabout bit of drivel about how her fervor for stopping the war led her to do the things she did. She never said sorry, just justified herself in her own mind for selling out POWs and giving the NVA lots of propaganda material.

349 There is no perfect solution, and you don't have to be perfect.

The perfect isn't just the enemy of the good, it's the mortal enemy of the good. People who want perfection and won't quit end up grinding everything around them to dust trying.

There's a lot of good that isn't done in pursuit.

2nd amendment experiment for the Lefties. Let's take a blue state, say California or New York for instance, and allow a temporary suspension of the 2nd amendment. A complete and total ban on guns. This will go for 20 years so we have ample time to see what happens.
And since Lefties are all about the open borders, they will be required to maintain open boarders. Also, since it is bad form to ask such embarassing questions as "Are you citizen of the United States", since they might make someone feel diminished, as if they were breaking a law of some kind, officials will not be allowed to ask if a person is bringing a weapon into the state, afterall, we want to be welcoming to new arrivals.
And finally, this ban covers prop guns in Hollywood.

It would not take too long to list all of Lee's virtues.

Fact is, we of Teh Horde would not only be raptly attentive to the listing thereof, but we would be duly inspired, moved and motivated to better ourselves, accordingly.

Much as I hate to admit it, some of my best writing has been within the realm of the Obituary.

If he was worthy of you, he was inspirational to us.

So, I'll be the one to be greedy, and ask you to share. Take your time. And if it's 5,000 words, then I beg that some COB will see it and make it a full on guest post.

If the feral government owned a football team they'd be the only ones to have women running backs and on the line and quarterback ... and then when they got trounced every game they'd claim that it had nothing to do with the women.

There is not a single professional sport that has any women operating at the top levels in serious competition with the men, let alone winning anything. For track and field the numbers are too clear to be ignored (women fall at least 10% short of the men in everything, often far more). But in the deadliest sport that our national security depends on ... the feral government forces women on the field against all evidence and reason.

There are places for women in our defense. Serious positions for them, including spywork and covert operations. But anywhere near front line combat ... not a chance. Frankly, putting women in jets is pretty silly (although, there is the single sport that a woman was able to beat all the men in - drag racing - which is a little, little bit like flying jets, though that's a real stretch) and I would love to see how the women pilots rank in that. Heck, there aren't even any women who can play golf with the men, even though there are women in the LPGA who outdrive some men in the PGA.

Well ... at least we'll have the transvestite pilots with their faux-tampons and pressure bras ....

417 Mornin' Gentlefappers!

Well normally I'm firmly on the "crossbow" side of the crossbows/longbows debate, but after seeing photos of "Mad Jack" Churchill bringing a longbow to a firefight I will allow that longbows have their merit:

From Dark5's "Five Strangest Photos of WWII.

"He is credited with the last longbow kill in action, felling a German sergeant with a barbed arrow to signal the start of an attack."

418 Does Thailand reproduce at replacement rate?

Actually, it's a bit misleading for them to hype the tranny thing, since they currently adopted the same restrictions we have. Libertarianism is dead. Ayn Rand Paul would not be amused.

421 No women will actually fight in combat units in the end no matter what the gray haired Rretards and lesbians demand. They will stay in CONUS or get knocked up like they always do.

At some point, the military will need to throw them out and put an end to the social experiments.

422 If we repeal the 19th amendment, would I still get to vote? Maybe I should rethink this.

424 I just heard that women are now going to have to register for the Draft.

And when you enlist as a woman, if the needs of the Service are for infantry, you are going to be assigned to infantry instead of Culinary Arts, or Supply Clerk.

Damn, isn't equality great!

425 People are still envisioning " combat" as like in movies from WW II
COIN is entirely different especially in Islamic culture
A woman as warrior can be highly effective anyone who thinks that the strongest guy is the best warrior hasn't seen much action

426 "University: Your Generic Soulless Holiday Party Cannot Be a Christmas Party in Disguise"

I'm going to stop worrying that *colleges* represent the "State" and are "limited" by the Constitution, until they are more serious about putting a "chilling effect on speech" and relegating free speech to *zones*.
