FERDINAND BURGDORFF (1881 - 1975)
The painter and printmaker Ferdinand Burgdorff was born in Cleveland, Ohio. He studied at the Cleveland School of Art and then in Paris, where he worked with Rene Menard and Florence Este. In 1907 he settled in Carmel, California, ultimately settling in Pebble Beach in 1920, where he remained for the rest of his life.
For nearly twenty years, Burgdorff made numerous trips throughout the southwestern United States, traveling at times with surveyors and on newly-established railways to record great expanses of uninhabited territory in addition to Navajo and Hopi reservations; for a time, he used Santa Fe as his base of operations, and later toured the ancient civilizations of Egypt and Greece. Primarily a landscape painter, Burgdorff also created etchings of his favored subjects and remained devoted to romantic depictions of the Southwest and its native peoples. He died in Pebble Beach.

I was not a fan either, however the man is immensely talented and certainly not like Yoko Ono who has zero talent. He has won my admiration as a consummate professional who will do whatever it takes to get the effect he is looking for. So I am an unapologetic fan at this point.

Heh. Dated a guy with a thick accent - used to engineer conversations so he would say certain words like 'harbor' and 'bureau'. So when I took him home to meet the family I ask him to say those words I like hearing w/his accent, he says a number of off-color words. THAT is Boston sensibility + accent. At least my family thought it was funny.

Funny thing, that's the only scene in the film that isn't in the original Chinese film Infernal Affairs. As satisfying as it is to watch Damon get shot in the face, it also ruins the noir sensibilities of the story. In the original, the evil mob mole survives and thrives.
Which brings me to my standard rant about The Departed and that ungrateful fucktard Scorsese. It's almost a shot-for-shot remake of Infernal Affairs, down to the camera angles, it's Scorsese's least original film, at the end of 20+ years of making obvious Oscar-bait films to sooth his wounded ego after first-time director Robert Redford stole his Oscar for Raging Bull with non-entity film Ordinary People.
But the worst thing is that ungrateful assmunch Scorsese didn't so much as acknowledge the Chinese film makers in his Oscar speech or in the media blitz during the awards season. No one associated with The Departed did either, with the notable exception of the screenwriter, Monahan, who gave a gracious thanks during his Oscar speech.

There are indeed many shots which are identical to those in Infernal Affairs, but IMHO The Departed is an actual good movie and Infernal Affairs isn't quite. Departed is better-paced, better crafted.
Also, it has the overlay of the almost Whitey Bulger story. I had to explain to my boys how much worse the real Whitey was, how he literally owned the Boston FBI office and got cover from the most powerful politician in MA, the corrupt midget.

What surprised me when I moved from SoCal to Texas is just how normal and frankly, mundane it is to talk guns. In SoCal, the moment the subject comes up, it's like walking on eggshells.
Here in Texas, it's like talking about the weather, or your garage door opener. A welcome change, I gotta say.

One of the big 2A trends has been the rise of Gun Culture 2.0, younger shooters, more new shooters at ranges and in the sold-out first-time shooter classes, a much larger percentage of women, and with an emphasis on tactical and defensive shooting. It's been written about extensively in both the gun-oriented and mainstream press.
Pretty much incompatible with the idea that the number of gun owners is static.

Why are the Republicans waiting for obama to actually submit a proposal or bill to oppose it?? Politics is 24/7. You can't just wait around for the final bill and then pretend you oppose with some half-hearted attempt to stop it.
The answer, of course, is that Republicans are secretly on board with obama's agenda. obama will come up some awful environmental bill full of regulations and taxes and penalties, and the Republicans will kick into "failure theater." And this is why Trump is still in the lead..

Part of the worsenation, is an absolutely horrific bear attack and mauling.(not a spoiler spoiler- it's on the cover).
The movie starts slow but really picks up after the mauling.

Starts out kind of relationshipy with some nature related difficulties
the bear attack is absolutely horrific, nightmare fuel
then a survival flick.

Fair enough. But again, for the purpose of a political discussion on guns, the gang bangers on the south side of Chicago don't really come into play, since a) they don't vote and b) if they ever do vote, they will vote straight "D" regardless of how many guns they won.

Now let's say over a period of time you now have 200 households and 56 have guns.
In the first example, 28/100 = .28 = 28% have guns.
In the second, 56/200 = .28 = 28% still have guns.
But, 56 >28, so more households have guns by quantity.
Now let's sample this for a poll. Assuming you contact 20 households each time, and assuming you get a representative sample each time (yes I know about sample size and n>20, I'm trying to keep this brief and simple), you will get roughly the same result of about 6 in 20 each time.
Thus, it is possible for the gross number of cases to increase, while the percentage remains roughly constant.
( Example numbers pulled out of thin air for the sake of illustration. )

This is what happened in reality (using your simple example)
1970: 50 / 100 households had guns
2015: 70/200 households have a gun
The number of guns is higher, the number of people who own a gun is higher, but the % is much lower.
And what matters politically is the %, not the raw number.
This really isn't difficult to understand.

Simple example again:
100 people
Scenario 1: 50% of people own 1 gun each. So 50 guns and 50% ownership.
Scenario 2: 25% of people own 3 guns each. So 75 guns, and 25% ownership.
The 1970s was Scenario 1, today is Scenario 2.
And politically speaking the 25% is what matters, not the 75 guns.

Errr, your original assertion at 245 was that the NUMBER of gun owners isn't increasing. Then at your 357, you cited a poll showing that the PERCENTAGE of gun owning households (as opposed to the original assertion of gun owners) was static or decreasing.
Leaving aside the question of the poll's veracity, you really need to make up your mind. Is your argument based on numbers or percentages? Gun owners or gun owning households?

We're going to settle this here: Mccaskill is a lying sack of shit. She didn't cause Akin to win that Primary. He won because he was a sitting Congressman, which means he had name recognition and "credibility" the other two candidates did not have.
He won because pretty much nobody outside his Congressional district (mine) knew what a nutbag he was. In a three way race, he barely squeaked out a win.
He had a vague reputation as a religion guy, and I suppose there were people like Huckleberry hawking for him, which means the downstate religious right types would have pushed him over the edge, if anybody did.
But Mccaskill had nothing to do with his win.

If his speech and press conference in Mali (?) right after the Paris shootings is any indication, YES. His performance was disturbing. Not just pauses and 'ums", but uncomfortably long pauses in the middle of what should have been a single thought. Seriously started to wonder if he had a mic in his ear and the delays were to absorb what Val or whomever was telling him to say. Also, grasping for common national security words and phrases, indicating (to me) that he lacks familiarity with the subject - no doubt because he skips more daily national security briefings than he attends, and only sporadically meets w/Joint Chiefs, etc.
He is not only out of touch, but disinterested in learning anything new, anything that challenges his set views and beliefs.

The other thing to bear in mind (no reference to DiCaprio intended), is that the rules of going to war with an enemy nation are different from the rules that govern the citizens of that nation during peace time.
France has essentially brought an invading army within their borders and it makes sense to them as they would if, say, a foreign nation sent an army to make war on them.

One of the funniest episodes of the Iraq War was early on, when Saddam was still in power, a bunch of Code Pink types flew to Baghdad and loudly proclaimed themselves to be human shields to protect hospitals and schools from that eeeevil bloodthirsty cowboy Dubya.
Saddam immediately stationed them next to tank parks, ammo magazines, command bunkers and military airfields. Within a day, most had fled for the airport bitching about Saddam putting them in harms way. Laughed my ass off.

San Francisco enacted its own "Healthy SF" initiative a couple of years back and similarly stuck the taxes to pay for it on to the tail end of restaurant receipts. Without making it clearly known in advance to patrons.
In a tourist town, plenty of people come here and go out for splurge family dinners at very expensive restaurants. Not having that surcharge disclosed in advance can be a nasty little surprise at the end of the evening.

I just finished Being Nixon by Evan Thomas (yes, I know). It's a surprisingly sympathetic look at ol' Dick, and Thomas makes a good case that, as you said, Nixon was hounded because of Hiss, because Georgetown society thought he was a dumb Whitter hick who had no business sullying the house that JFK lived in, and because he hated the press so much they were bound and determined to destroy him.
