5 Hi,

Sorry. Just dropping this here again to see if I can net a few more opinions. It won't become a regular thang.

Way Way Way OT: *

I have a nephew who was accepted into UT Electrical Engineering Program but not in his first choice area-

the area they accepted him in was the Software Engineering and Systems track.

He's extremely bright in math and so this wouldn't be a bad path for him, but-

Is this the dreaded IT career which is being decimated by H1B imports?

Can any morons in the EE/Software engineering fields put me some knowledge?

*- Yes, I asked this question yesterday afternoon and received some good answers.

But, more knowledge is more better. And the Morning Horde tends to have a different make-up than the afternoon

So, any MH EE/SW engineer morons care to weigh in?

64 Re the student interested in EE.

Is there a reason UT is the program he wants to attend?

I think switching to hardware from a software degree is a more difficult path than necessary.

How about he gets an associates degree in a related field first, then reapply to EE programs? Has the added benefit of providing him with trade skills.

Whole lottacomprehensive state universities offer those sort of programs. (Do not recommend a for-profit) And associates would make him more competitive. Might even get into a better school and/or get a great scholarship.

90 5 - naturalfake question about SW engg and the H1B issue.

Computer Science prof here.

(1) Yes. It is an issue.

However! UT-Engineering is a great school, so the chances of your nephew being squeezed out are fairly small.

(2) He won't be using much in the way of math skills in SW engg. Systems is a different story -- Systems programs tend to have a lot of variability (I came out of a Univ of Mich systems engineering program; it was insanely math-flu).

(3) Possibilities for internal (within UT) transfer exists. Your nephew should aim to crush his first year classes, then try for a transfer to the program he wants. Engineering programs have the first year, yeah-and-a-half common across most disciplines.

Ok, time to trot this out again:

"In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is...in some small way to become evil oneself. One's standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to."
- Theodore Dalrymple

So, not dumb. A deliberate poke in the eye to everyone who heard him, in Paris and here. I take it no one booed him down.

Ownership is overrated: the joys of communal property. Its not about giving something up: owning less means buying less means having to earn less means working less means having more of your life to actually enjoy

One year ago I owned a house. Today I rent a one-bedroom suite with my daughter. There were dozens of factors contributing to this drastic shift in my life, the majority of which were beyond my control. But from where I stand now, even after what might be called a downgrade in our living arrangement, I feel oddly happy.

There is a ton of demand for people 1) with the skill set he's looking at and 2) who can get (and maintain) a clearance. Have him just run a job search for "Electronic Warfare engineer." That's not the case though. The road to $150K starts with $70K out of college typically. The $40K entry level people don't get to $150K often.

Again not making a judgement call, just saying how it is.

Watched a documentary called Last of the Unjust by Claude Lanzman. It's about Therienstadt mostly interviews with the last elder of the jews as they call them. He also re -released Sobibor. Neither is the quality of his earlier work. I suspect that he had these interviews on tape and wanted to get them out there. All the survivors are dead or have one foot in the grave. Lanzman is 90 and Marcel Ophuls is 88. Neither will be around much longer.

179 RE: So, any MH EE/SW engineer morons care to weigh in?

It's mostly only bigger companies trying to import low-wage workers and it's generally pretty short-sighted. You get what you pay for.

Eventually they figure that out and have to re-hire competent engineers again, so it goes in cycles.

In the startup world small companies are always looking for good talent. (though proving you have that talent is hard)

Software jobs are mostly good and pay well but they're not generally safe or easy. Long hours, a lot of responsibility, constantly having to learn new technologies to keep up, companies come and go quickly, etc...

It's one of the few fields left where America really does dominate. And if marc andreessen is right it's only going to keep growing (http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424053111903480904576512250915629460).

215 There is really no such thing as SW engineering. It is a disservice to disciplines such as EE, where objective standards exist, where best practices are known and followed and where failures and errors lead to really bad consequences for everyone, to even consider thinking of software development in the same terms, at this stage of its maturity. People are attempting to bring the field under control, but that would require a much more mature industry. SW is such a moving target, and the changes are so rapid and disruptive, that it is difficult to suggest anyone try to get involved ... unless, unless, they love it. Then, it is the most rewarding and frustrating and mentally demanding thing that one will ever attempt. It is a continuing education process, forever.

And the wild west is what makes it a good money maker potentially. If you're only 1 of 100 people on earth who knows some obscure language, you'll get top dollar for it.

On the other hand if you're' a C++ coder, there are 28 billion others who know it as well. And that's where the H1Bs dominate, in the routine stuff.

The problem is that the obscure language that's making you big bucks today will be gone next year. On the other hand there is always a C++ job somewhere. So there's that balance you have to walk all the time.

324 Russia has expanded its military operations in Syria to include a second airbase as well as other posts, according to a U.S. official briefed on the latest intelligence from the region even as President Obama expresses muted optimism that Russian President Vladimir Putin eventually will shift his strategy and work with the West.

Moscows presence has grown to a total of four forward operating bases, including recently added bases in Hama and Tiyas. But the most concerning to the Pentagon is the second airbase in Shayrat which can support fixed wing aircraft, greatly expanding Russias capability for airstrikes, which began on Sept. 30.

And Fredo essentially invited them in and held the door for them.

Nobody seems to be getting this with Trump. They're either freaking out that such a person could possibly be allowed into the clubhouse, or yelling that he's said the opposite in the past. OK, so what? The GOP is missing the point: he's succeeding where you're failing, learn why so you can stop failing instead of just getting the vapors with outraged indignation.

Watching how people just will not learn from his example is just frustrating and shows exactly why they call it the stupid party.

I'll say it again: the presidential election has turned into a reality show competition. Trump is the guy who games the rules and system really well and connects with the audience so he's a favorite. The Democrats are the guys that the network wants to win and favor, so they get the best camera angles, best reaction shots, the best quotes during the little interview sections between segments, etc.

All the guys that should have won were voted off the island in the first week.

the black pastors are the gatekeepers for the Dim GOTV effort in the black communities. If Trump's spending time now working them - then:

1. He already has his eyes on the prize.

467 Why would the people who pay for polls want to fund a poll that gives results they don't want?
Posted by: Azenogoth

_____________

I'm open to the theory that polling is slanted at the margins, usually this is done where they assume especially high Democrat turnout models. Or the fact that conservatives (unfortunately) don't like to participate in polling like liberals do (shy Tory factor)

But what I think is tin-foil hat territory is the idea that these pollsters are going to make polling look like Hillary is getting beat by some Republicans, but not others. Just singling Trump out, and every polling outfit is "in" on this deception. But they will then go on to show Trump ahead in the GOP primary.

It's a lot of conspiracies to keep up with

468 Teh Donald may not be my piece of cake, but I am loving the screeches from the GOPe bitches who bray about "party unity" when it's their Establishment hack set up to be the Dems' tomato can, but who threaten to leave the party or the country if Trump gets anywhere near the White House.

"Hey! Sell me a hand grenade so I can blow myself up!"

"Uh, why would you do that when you can prosper by..."

"I have a budget to make, you're no good to me! You, second guy, sell me a hand grenade!"

"Heh, sure thing...pleasure doin' business..."

***BOOM***

"...holy s*** what a mess, I need a broom now..."

"Well since we have such a great business relationship, I can offer you a deal..."

Sorry. I've been around humans too long to expect it to be any other way by now.

Trump put a lot of blue collar workers to work in Construction and Hospitality when Trump did his deals. Romney moved money around with bankers.

People SEE Trump employing people directly at TRUMP Hotel/Casino/Resort.

471 In 2008, Obama got 96% of the black vote. In 2012, he got 93%. Highest totals ever and it was because of historic first.

What is more important is that a higher percentage of eligible black voters voted in 2012 than eligible white voters. That was the first time that happened since 1968. Romney also had one of if not the highest percentages of white voters ever.

Obama won't be on the ballot this time around so whomever is the nominee will get a higher percentage of the black vote and the black vote will be less valuable. This is why Dems freak out all the time and accuse Republicans of trying to suppress black and other minority voters.

The Dem party is rapidly becoming a minority ruled party so anytime those votes totals go down it is good for Republicans.

477 Since the biggest, most established polling organizations are all saying "polling doesn't work like it used to and we're struggling to find more accurate methods" the time has come for the poll-worshiping pundits to realize they aren't all that and a plate of bacon.

It was really shocking to me in 2012 watching people claim the polls were all accurate when none of them gave the outcome. They generally had Obama winning, and that's as accurate as it came, none of the numbers were close.

And each election that goes by, worldwide, the polls are further and further off. Witness British election last time, or the 2014 congressional election, etc, etc. Polling skewed? Its not really even a useful metric any more. The tea leaves lie.

478 I went through a bunch of bond movies last year and learned that I'm apparently one of the weirdo's who loves Timothy Dalton as bond.

Lea, he was the best James Bond yet, at least based on the books. He was great but he was handed an awful script for License to Kill and the producers blamed him for the dismal performance of the film. It wasn't his fault they forced him into a crappy Miami Vice episode.

---

oh me too! He did the best Bond! Suave with cold killer eyes coz he likes dames but it's all about the mission in the end.

I think the media wants to believe Hispanics hate the guy but I'm not seeing any evidence of it. Hispanic activists, yeah.

Look folks, we all know why the GOP establishment hates Trump - mostly the same reasons I don't like him as a candidate.

But why do the Democrats? Why do they seem to want to stop him so badly? If he's such as crappy candidate and buffoon nobody would vote for, they would not care if he was the front runner.

481 This is one of the things I figured would happen
with Obamacare. Once you have access to citizens' health records you can
make all sorts of legislation based on what was formerly private
information. They could simply say anyone who has taken any of the
following drugs (for depression, schizophrenia, bi-polar, etc.) in the
last X number of year cannot have a gun. How do you fight that?

Posted by: Lizzy at December 01, 2015 11:51 AM (NOIQH)

Behold the joy of government control of healthcare ("single payer," a euphemism to avoid calling it what it is: socialized medicine).

First, the government has access to every citizen's health records.

Second, it's in a position to make decisions about every citizen based on those records.
Third, and best of all, there's absolutely no recourse for the citizen.
Sounds delightful. What could go wrong?
(Btw, I always think this when a stupid chick bitches that no insurance company or anyone else should have a say regarding "her body," etc., and therefore she supports having the government in charge of health care. WTF?)

482 I can see Trump working with big cities and businesses to implement Jack Kemp's idea of enterprise zones or whatever he called them. He is really smart in the way he communicates. He repeats the same phrases and sentences over and over again. He does it to get in the heads of the LIVs. Also, his conspicuous consumption is t a turn off to most people. Americans admire wealth and success when it is earned through hard work and ingenuity. Jeb! and Rubio are bragging about sleeping at the Motel 6 to impress voters. Trump is right that nobody wants to see their president carry his own bags off Air Force One like Jimmy Carter. His wealth is positive for him. People love his plane and heli. He shows up at rallies in French cuffs and a sportcoat and his red hat. It all works for him in a way that wouldn't be possible for any other candidate

Posted by: Jean at December 01, 2015 12:00 PM (fBkaR)

This. And the fact, or at least the impression, that Trump polls well amongst blacks could help him two ways in the primary, too. One, it's an advantage that the GOPe crowd cannot claim with a straight face, and two, it makes him more of threat to them as a third-party candidate if the party screws him over and installs a GOPe toady in a brokered convention.

I spent a few years in preparation for a figurative painting series by going to the Arts Center in Indianapolis and drawing live nudes in studio every weekend. The best subjects to draw (in my experience) were those people who have interesting bodies, and many of those folks were not beautiful, per se; that is, they weren't perfectly Golden Section-proportioned like Greek statues.

Of course, classical nudes are one thing and making a pinup calendar is entirely another. It's clear Amy Schumer isn't about being beautiful, but I think she's got an interesting face and would be fun to draw.

488 I'm not sure where Hispanics shake out on illegal immigration. Sure, Hispanic activists are for it, but they're a self-selected group (and probably have no small number of leftist agitators stirring the soup).

But the Hispanics I know here in SoCal do not support it, any more than Cesar Chavez did, and for the same reason.

495 Jeff Sessions
is warning Americans that under newly minted House Speaker Rep. Paul Ryans
and Senate Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnells
planned government funding bill, President Barack Obama will be allowed to bring in 10,000 Syrian refugees and place them in American communities.

Session said in a statement released this morning:

As currently written, this years appropriations bills which will be combined into a catch all omnibus by December 11th amount to a blank check for the President to carry out his refugee resettlement plans.

Not only will the President be allowed to bring in the 85,000 refugees he has announced on top of current record immigration levels, but this will include at least 10,000 refugees from Syria who will subsequently be able to bring in their foreign relatives. All refugees are eligible for lifetime government benefits and Social Security and Medicare access, and are on a fast-track to becoming voting U.S. citizens. More than 90 percent of recent Middle Eastern refugees are on welfare.

Technically, the bill hasnt yet been released likely, it won t be released until mere hours before the vote but its pretty clear at this point, from the public statements of the GOP leadership, that the plan in Congress is to pave the way for Obama.
