212 Interesting convo I had with the in-laws over Thanksgiving. They are Democrat-ish, but not crazy leftist. They're Democrast because I don't think they understand exactly what the Democrat party has become, since they still get their news from NBC Nightly News and the local NBC station.
Anyway they like Rubio a lot, think Ted Cruz is a crazy person and think Donald Trump would be a horrible president on foreign affairs because he's too mean to people and you can't do that as a diplomat. And they also think deporting illegals, while not a bad idea, is impossible to do so why even talk about it.
Not saying I agree or disagree with them, but it was interesting to get that point of view from 2 people who are the types of "gee should we vote blue or red this year honey" that make or break elections.

Meh, there's a good reason "brain surgeon" is used as an expression for "genius." Its correct that being really good in one area doesn't make you great in all areas - hence idiotic statements by men like Einstein when they leave their wheelhouse. But you really do have to be pretty damn smart to do his work, and he's shown it in other areas. That doesn't mean he's presidential, but to argue he's not all that smart for being a brain surgeon is just odd.

It's funny, I just got back from my post op meeting with my surgeon and his very attractive nurse. I had to actually push the guy to do the surgery on me, he kept advocating for a more conservative approach. That made me want him to do it even more.
He has the personality of a door knob but he seems to have done good work.

My problem with doctors is the same as the problem I have with McDonald's cashiers, disc jockeys, and auto mechanics: most people in any field are there for the paycheck and either lousy at it or just don't care much. When its a doctor, that means they tend to fall into a rut, won't challenge themselves when something difficult comes along, and mostly throw anti-depressant pills at people they can't diagnose easily.

some are brilliant, some are average, and some are moth breathing idiots who don't routinely kill their patients because ancillary staff and other doctors intervene.
not only that, but as mentioned above, many of them are useless outside of their field of specialty, and lack common sense, general knowledge or, often times, basic social skills.
you can hold them up on a pedestal all you want, but MD is NOT pronounced "G*d"...

An internist, a neurologist and a surgeon go duck hunting. They're sitting in the blind when something flies overhead. The internist jumps up, looks in the air, "Looks like a duck. That's why I like either really young doctors who haven't entered the "I don't' give a fuck" stage of their careers, or really old doctors. Why oldies? Well cuz by 50-55 years old most docs can comfortably retire. If they're still at it well into their 60s, it means they must actually like what they do and care about patients, etc.
The 35--50 year old doctor....it's a crap shoot. They could be there simply for the paycheck and counting down the days until they can call it quits and play golf full time.

Well yeah, exactly. Basic government services should be paid for out of basic taxation, without needing a dime extra spending. That's the baseline, what the government should be doing at minimum. If it wants to do more, it needs to figure out how to pay for that, not basic services and protections.
Jeb Bush seems far more interested in destroying Rubio than he does in winning. Moreover, fair or not, he does not even really seem interested in the job, period. What big-money donor wants to donate to such a campaign?
There's a theory out there that Bush is running for the General election right now, reaching out to a broader appeal than just Republican voters. Its not only stupid, but pointless: nobody except really reluctant nose-gripping Republicans are going to pull the lever for Bush no matter how he campaigns or what he says.

Walker was flat out the best of the bunch and gave up too early because he built a lousy campaign staff to work with. He should have coasted and studied, then done what is working for Trump, with some strong debate appearances and could have bee up in the top 5 easily.
It's kinda like being the triangle player in the orchestra. He just has o know when. Surgeon just needs to know where.

Cruz is a talker. That's all he's ever done in his entire career: talk, its what lawyers do. That doesn't mean he can't do, or wouldn't be any good in an executive position, its just that we don't know. We have no examples of it at all to judge from.
I like Cruz, and he is the only one of the remaining candidates that really seems to honestly and intellectually comprehend conservatism - something Sarah Palin did not seem to. But can he do the job, would he surround himself with great people to get the work done? Who knows?

You could make this case with a lot of candidates, but my biggest issue with Cruz is he's basically just the guy that always fails but does it with "purity" as if intentions were all that matters.
Ron Paul was basically the same way, just vote "no" on every single bill and have an entire career in politics with no real accomplishments where you actually ever did anything but pontificate.

First of all, I said "excepting Dr. Carson". Second, with regards to the other three candidates you mentioned, they are more talkers than doers, especially when compared with the governors I mentioned. Sens. Rand and Cruz have not actually accomplished much in the Senate. Even on ObamaCare, which is supposedly Cruz's best issue, Rubio bested Cruz by getting an actual policy win via a policy rider. As for Trump, Mitt Romney is more of a self-made man than he is and has the better overall business record. Anyhow, most Trump fans I meet like him because of his rhetoric, not his business record.

As far as proposing a budget - yes that is an explicit presidential duty.
As for the rest -
budget for bridges should be on autopilot as they are funded by user/gas tax and largely owned by state and local go.
power plants are largely if not entirely run by private power companies, co-ops, etc.When it comes right down to it - the federal go has little to nothing to do with 'infrastructure' other than tying it up in regulatory red tape.

I don't think of actors as a group. I know a lot of actors. Some are very intelligent. If I don't spend a lot of time asking about their other interests and in conversion with them I may not know if they're very intelligent or not. I also tend not to confuse people's political opinions automatically with whether they are intelligent.. I know engineers and math teachers/professors who voted for Obama-twice. When he first got in office he made a big show to tell his department heads to trim a total of $100 million in spending. As if that if that would even make a dent in the deficit, yet TO THIS DAY he still claims to have cut the deficit in half. In his mind he cut the $200 billion dollar deficit he inherited from Bush (outside of TARP) by ordering the $100 million in spending reduction.
