5 Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, November 26, 2015, Thanksgiving day. On this day in 1789 a national Thanksgiving Day was observed in the United States as proclaimed by President George Washington at the request of Congress. However, it did not become a national holiday until 1863 when Lincoln made it so for the Northern part of the country on the last Thursday of Nov. In 1941 FDR changed it to the 4th Thursday which is where it is at now.

Meh, not really. 20-30 years ago there was less rot. Think about things like race relations, economy, morality/culture and security?

Millenials feel less hope about their future than people thei age had felt in decades past.

Deaths among white middle aged people have *increased* since 2003, reversing a decades old trend. Half a million people dead that ought not be, due to suicide, alcohol poisoning and drug ODs.

So that common, glib sentiment is simply incorrect. There have been much better times in which to live.

I'll leave it to the 'rons to decipher What It All Means, but I find it interesting that Carson leads Trump on FB by a half a mil (I expected Trump to dominate), yet Trump swamps the rest of the field on Twitter. The stats show that Carson's (and Cruz's) more evangelical/SoCon followers prefer Facebook, I guess.

Total followers, rounded:

Facebook:

Carson - 4.9 million
Trump - 4.5 million
Cruz - 1.6 million
Rubio - 1.1 million
Fiorina - 527,000
Jeb!- 299,000

Twitter:

Trump - 5.0million
Carson - 1.0 million
Rubio - 987,000
Fiorina - 628,000
Cruz - 609,000
Jeb! - 379,000

I don't know if it's Evangelical so much as *older*. At least in my family, the oldest generation (60+ years old) uses FaceBook exclusively as their social media, if they use any at all. They also seem to all support Carson regardless of denomination. I suspect that they are concerned and looking for an outsider like I am, but that Trump's multiple divorces and brash manner are a bridge too far. None of them care that Carson isn't white, they like his story and how he represents American potential, so that, combined with his calm demeanor, seems to be what draws them. This is the first real "generation gap" I've seen between myself and my older realtives since, although Trump isn't my preference, I guess I no longer have such high expectations for a President to act "presidential" so his brasness and divorces don't turn me completely away like it does them.

I either need to get a jacket for it to concentrate the heat and block the wind, or just use it for pre-heating jars to speed up the canning process.

I told a friend when I bought it and he started spouting rhapsodical about vomiting volcanoes of burning oil, and I had to remind him that it was a turkey fryer, not a fougasse.

Thanksgiving. Rainy, cold. Battery moved up to its first position vic[inity] Piccilli, approx 4500 behind front lines. 937 [FA Bn] moved up at night. Our baptism under fire was purely Baptist. Immersion.
-The EZ Dog Diaries

Picilli is about 14 miles SE of Monte Cassino, where the German forces were dug in and heavily fortified along the Gustav Line, blocking the Allied advance up the Italian "boot". This was Dad's first real exposure to enemy bombardment, but in spite of the play on words not the heaviest they would experience. The Anzio invasion would launch less than two months later, in January 1944.

He was 24 years old.

Bitcoin is a fiat currency that supposedly has a limited supply, as such it is supposed to hold it value better than the Zairian Shilling.
What I understand is that it is a special key electronic document that uses a form of encryption, similar but way more complicated than your debit card, to both verify its validity and verify its transfer.

It is supposed to act like electronic Gold, as in it is unforgeable, anonymous and more easily portable.
ISIS could be funding its works with Gold and Silver, and it would be just as anonymous, but the main thing is that bitcoin is more portable, you can send it from here to Madagascar faster than you can get whatever you want from Madigascar here. This is a problem with Gold, since unless you trust your banker (and he trusts you) you have to physically send gold around to satisfy debts.

There are a number of crypto-currencies around, and governments hate them worse than poison - all that untraceable economic activity that is not being taxed. The ISIS thing (DAESH thing) might be the pretext to outlaw it altogether.

For a good 7-8 years I went to my Dad's (is it girlfriend when he is in his 80's and she is in her 70's?) for Christmas and Thanksgiving.
The food was terrible and Dad's close ladyfriend's family hate having outsiders and non-immediate family members at their special events and I got tired of being ignored and given FREAKIN PISSY BRAT ATTITUDE from young adults who are eternally spoiled 14 year old girls at heart. So I explained to Dad my attitude, and stopped going.

I'd suppose I could serve at the mission but there are people there I don't want to see either.

My best Thanksgiving dinner in the last 20 years was followed by breaking up with my long term girlfriend the next day, too. The two events were not linked, but it reflects how I feel about major holidays.

173 Jews worldwide are taking action to help celebrate the wedding of Sarah-Tehiya Litman, whose father and brother were murdered in a drive-by shooting near Hevron almost two weeks ago.

Litman is to be married on Thursday night to her fiance Ariel Beigel after having to postpone their original wedding date due to the terrorist attack, and many are planning to show up to help celebrate after the young bereaved couple invited the general public, with yet others donating to help.

But that effort to help celebrate was given some of its most moving illustration by five Chabad On Campus centers in the US and Canada, which decided to crowd-fund donations from students and then hold a raffle to send at least one representative from each school to the wedding.

The extra funds from are to go to the young couple as a wedding gift, and the centers involved include: Chabad Student Center At Einstein; Center for Jewish Life of Rockland; Chabad On Campus - Queens; Rohr Chabad Student Network of Ottawa; Chabad at Binghamton.

Aside from taking part in the joy of the wedding, the representatives will also visit some of those wounded in the recent wave of Arab terror attacks. They likewise will visit the mourning family of 18-year-old soldier Ziv Mizrahi, who was stabbed to death at a gas station northwest of Jerusalem on Monday.

188 As an expected three million spectators turn their eyes skyward on Thursday morning, police sharpshooters on rooftops will be peering down for any signs of trouble at the Macys Thanksgiving Day Parade.

In addition to Snoopy and SpongeBob floating overhead, there will be mobile cameras and police helicopters, specially trained police dogs sniffing for traces of explosives and officers patrolling on horseback, said James P. ONeill, the New York Police Departments chief of department, its highest ranking uniformed officer.

Observation posts, staffed by officers from the elite Emergency Service Unit, will be watching for suspicious activity; officers will use radiation detectors to seek out evidence of a dirty bomb; and teams of plainclothes officers will mix unobtrusively with revelers spread along the two and a half miles of the Manhattan parade route between 9 a.m. and noon.

I have mostly pleasant memories of Thanksgiving, though. We used to to my grandparents' house when I was a kid, and later I just went to my parents' house. As they got older, neither my dad nor me wanted to make my mom do all that work, so we started going to restaurants.

Now that they're gone, the Hungry Man Turkey Dinner has become my "tradition". It's been many years since I had an actual home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner.

Yes. Manipulating a turkey carcass so you can coat the cavity with Lawrey's and'or Mrs Dash, just before stuffing, makes a significant improvement. Also, simmered spices in a glaze or baste applied while it is roasting also cooks right in. Lots of people prefer a vigorously massaged or hammered dry-rub just before oven to the overnight soak. You're going to do just fine.

I second Stringer's advice. I neglected to marinade my last batch of chicken thighs so, as the smoker was getting to temp, I coated them (skin on) in a mix of salt, brown sugar, onion powder, and garlic powder. It was really good! Good enough that I'm going to add it to the flavor rotation.

With the whole turkey you could blend some of the mix with softened butter and spread that on the breast under the skin as well.

I didn't stuff the keg with road flares, as you suggested -- or did you caution against it? I can never remember -- but we got a good blaze going with fallen limbs collected from the yard (tree limbs!) and when I placed The Guy on top of the fire there was a magnificent WHHOOOSHH! and a pillar of fire rose into the heavens. It was a beautiful clear night with a bright crescent moon, and the moment the fire died down a blast of cold air chilled us to the bone, as if to say "Winter is here".

https://www.usamega.com/powerball-jackpot.asp

The lump sum is a ripoff. But the annuity is a HUGE ripoff. The annual payouts ARE NOT EQUAL. They increase over time. Check it out.

(Besides, you never know when a state or even obama's federal govt will just decide they ain't paying no more. See: Illinois)

The "pillow fight"? I have a lot of friends that went to West Point, one my son's father in law.

None of them ever heard of a "Pillow Fight". It has to be a made up BS tradition that is maybe 10 years old, which at West Point was yesterday.

Tanya Robertson, a member of the State Republican Executive Committee, plans to introduce a resolution at the committees meeting next week that would place a non-binding resolution on secession on the ballot.

Robertsons proposal comes after the Texas Nationalist Movement failed to gather the 75,000 signatures needed to get secession on the ballot. The Houston Chronicle reports.

370 Yes, malls and shopping centers killed real department stores a generation ago. I was pleased to get online shopping to keep me out of those damn places. Thirteen shoe stores with the same thing. But when you think of what the big stores used to be, especially at Christmas, you can sure as hell get a little shudder of nostalgia.
And keep in mind, "nostalgia" was what Civil War doctors called PTSD.

There was an arcade in our mid-size downtown, attached to Big Store, that had the biggest damn O-gauge layout you'd ever seen, with all the new accessories. Kids stood around that thing, half a block long it seemed, about 8 deep. All the way around. Whenever I smell light machine oil, or Marx's superior formula locomotive smoke, it makes me think of Christmas gone by.

And, no Muzak. The city had not one but several professional church choirs in those days, and they sang carols SATB in shifts in the mezzanine.

Following criticism from the Shura Council of America and others, he has been inspired to establish the MECCA Institute, an online school and think tank that aims to offer classes in modern-day explication of Islamic philosophy and tenets. With both male and female teachers, classes will include Comparative Quran and Gender and Sexual Variance in Islamic Texts and Contexts.

Unshielded, no conduit, just the reinforced insulation.

Bdzzap, it goes, and the bucket comes up with a 6-inch hole burned in it. The riggers were down, so the juice never got to the old man. Softened up the grease joints a little, you might say. 2% of the world's population just disappeared one day. October 14... I think? It occurred about 3 years prior to the beginning of the show, so everyone we meet, these people are the "leftovers."

No explanation for what happened, just a world full of confused humans, trying to make sense of it all.

Some of it would appear to be metaphysical, but maybe not. Different entities have different answers, and there may be "prophets" among the people, with miracles happening... or maybe there aren't.

I would say Season 1 was more of a setup, a season long preamble, if you will. Now that we know these people, they are operating in ways that seem bizarre, but strangely, real and sane.

I watched all of Boardwalk Empire, on demand, during the 3 weeks I was stuck at home because there was too much snow to get my car out of the driveway.

Posted by: Carol at November 26, 2015 11:23 AM (sj3Ax)

Amazon had one of those special one day sales where they had all three movies in Bluray for $25 and I got them. Not only is the movie quality one hell of a lot better than TV but no commercials.

It is still only $30 for all three.

409 Chicago had one of their utility service tunnels flood due to pilings for a bridge being moved, the leakage being reported, but due to a department re-organization the report got lost, and then the dam broke in the tunnel.

Or the oil rig in Louisiana drilling in a small lake hit the salt dome underneath. The lake and the rig quickly vanished.

I really hated the way they ended Boardwalk Empire. Not just the final scene, but the fact that they whole last season was just there to artificially tie everything up.

If you go into "The Leftovers" with something of an open mind, and be aware there are religious themes (there would have to be), just try to remember these people are all crazy because millions of people just up and disappeared from the planet, all at once, with no warning, no nothing. Just, one minute they were there, the next, they weren't.

Find the opening credits for Season 2 somewhere. I'm sure it's easy to find. A very twangy female singer... with still photos... it's brilliant. It will pretty much give you everything you need to know going in.
