I don't know if it's Evangelical so much as *older*. At least in my family, the oldest generation (60+ years old) uses FaceBook exclusively as their social media, if they use any at all. They also seem to all support Carson regardless of denomination. I suspect that they are concerned and looking for an outsider like I am, but that Trump's multiple divorces and brash manner are a bridge too far. None of them care that Carson isn't white, they like his story and how he represents American potential, so that, combined with his calm demeanor, seems to be what draws them. This is the first real "generation gap" I've seen between myself and my older realtives since, although Trump isn't my preference, I guess I no longer have such high expectations for a President to act "presidential" so his brasness and divorces don't turn me completely away like it does them.

Bitcoin is a fiat currency that supposedly has a limited supply, as such it is supposed to hold it value better than the Zairian Shilling.
What I understand is that it is a special key electronic document that uses a form of encryption, similar but way more complicated than your debit card, to both verify its validity and verify its transfer.
It is supposed to act like electronic Gold, as in it is unforgeable, anonymous and more easily portable.
ISIS could be funding its works with Gold and Silver, and it would be just as anonymous, but the main thing is that bitcoin is more portable, you can send it from here to Madagascar faster than you can get whatever you want from Madigascar here. This is a problem with Gold, since unless you trust your banker (and he trusts you) you have to physically send gold around to satisfy debts.
There are a number of crypto-currencies around, and governments hate them worse than poison - all that untraceable economic activity that is not being taxed. The ISIS thing (DAESH thing) might be the pretext to outlaw it altogether.

For a good 7-8 years I went to my Dad's (is it girlfriend when he is in his 80's and she is in her 70's?) for Christmas and Thanksgiving.
The food was terrible and Dad's close ladyfriend's family hate having outsiders and non-immediate family members at their special events and I got tired of being ignored and given FREAKIN PISSY BRAT ATTITUDE from young adults who are eternally spoiled 14 year old girls at heart. So I explained to Dad my attitude, and stopped going.
I'd suppose I could serve at the mission but there are people there I don't want to see either.
My best Thanksgiving dinner in the last 20 years was followed by breaking up with my long term girlfriend the next day, too. The two events were not linked, but it reflects how I feel about major holidays.
I am not the person to talk about life-skills or relationship advice.

My poor sister has been living in a hotel (with her family and pets) for several weeks after having a major sewage backup into her house. They're too far away to come her for Thanksgiving, but have inlaws who are taking them in for the day.

I had a similar experience with Valentine's Day, which is why I'm likely to assault anyone who wishes me "Happy Valentine's Day".
I have mostly pleasant memories of Thanksgiving, though. We used to to my grandparents' house when I was a kid, and later I just went to my parents' house. As they got older, neither my dad nor me wanted to make my mom do all that work, so we started going to restaurants.
Now that they're gone, the Hungry Man Turkey Dinner has become my "tradition". It's been many years since I had an actual home-cooked Thanksgiving dinner.

I reposted it in this one because it just got my blood boiling. He punched the cop but was let go "for the good of the city", according to the judge and state's attorney. Utterly lawlessness is good for the city. And the "protests" ended up about 3 blocks from my place last night. It's supposed to be much worse tomorrow. I also read they aren't issuing riot gear for the cops

We have many happy memories of Marshall Fields from the early days of our marriage. Living in Chicago with no car, it (and the loop) was where we did most of our Christmas shopping for each other. Cold as heck dashing around, but there were always roasted chestnut vendors. Very magical.

Yes. Manipulating a turkey carcass so you can coat the cavity with Lawrey's and'or Mrs Dash, just before stuffing, makes a significant improvement. Also, simmered spices in a glaze or baste applied while it is roasting also cooks right in. Lots of people prefer a vigorously massaged or hammered dry-rub just before oven to the overnight soak. You're going to do just fine.

I second Stringer's advice. I neglected to marinade my last batch of chicken thighs so, as the smoker was getting to temp, I coated them (skin on) in a mix of salt, brown sugar, onion powder, and garlic powder. It was really good! Good enough that I'm going to add it to the flavor rotation.
With the whole turkey you could blend some of the mix with softened butter and spread that on the breast under the skin as well.

The first 7 yrs of our marriage were spent there. Took a couple of years to adjust, but loved it. We were pretty broke, but what little spending money we did have we'd spend on restaurants and "culture."
It really saddens me what's become of that town.
That said, spent a nice long weekend there a couple of years ago. Had a couple of really good meals and enjoyed the city (it was in November).
But even then it doesn't feel the same. When we lived there it was a friendly town. It's been much more uptight and NYC'y since September 11th, really.

I didn't stuff the keg with road flares, as you suggested -- or did you caution against it? I can never remember -- but we got a good blaze going with fallen limbs collected from the yard (tree limbs!) and when I placed The Guy on top of the fire there was a magnificent WHHOOOSHH! and a pillar of fire rose into the heavens. It was a beautiful clear night with a bright crescent moon, and the moment the fire died down a blast of cold air chilled us to the bone, as if to say "Winter is here".
Very pagan. Hope my Catholic forebears will forgive me.

Yes. My recycling pickup day is Thursday, so there's no pickup today.
The absolute worst is when Christmas falls on a Thursday, as it did last year. That means that New Year's is also on Thursday, which means there's no pickup for a full three weeks and I'm up to my ears in beer bottles.

They changed the composition of cigarette papers so cigarettes won't stay lit unless you puff on them. So if you still want to use a cigarette as a slow burning punk, you have to dab them with a dilute solution of saltpeter and let them dry.

There was an arcade in our mid-size downtown, attached to Big Store, that had the biggest damn O-gauge layout you'd ever seen, with all the new accessories. Kids stood around that thing, half a block long it seemed, about 8 deep. All the way around. Whenever I smell light machine oil, or Marx's superior formula locomotive smoke, it makes me think of Christmas gone by.
And, no Muzak. The city had not one but several professional church choirs in those days, and they sang carols SATB in shifts in the mezzanine.

Why? I needed a lightweight jacket, and searching online was not getting me what I needed. Not the right length, not the right temp level, not even the right look. And no matter how I changed the search terms, I couldn't find what I was looking for.
I walked into Sears, not expecting much, and walked out half an hour later, not only with the right jacket, but a handful of shirts as well.

Everybody keeps saying that, but I'm generally not a fan of alternate history. I guess I'll check it out anyway.
I tell everyone though, if you aren't watching HBO's The Leftovers, including if you watched Season 1 and were kinda turned off by it, you have no idea what you are missing. I swear this is some incredible television being done here.
Really transcendent stuff. I don't throw out superlatives easily, but every week I am astounded and emotionally spent. I don't know where they are going with it, but this is some deep, deep sh*t they are doing, even this past week, which was kind of silly... until it wasn't.

You sound like you may be talking from experience here. About 40 years ago, Dad was on the rig, the [US Gypsum in this case] plant engineer had just been out to double check his charts, and when he broke ground there was a 700-volt line not two feet down. Unshielded, no conduit, just the reinforced insulation.
Bdzzap, it goes, and the bucket comes up with a 6-inch hole burned in it. The riggers were down, so the juice never got to the old man. Softened up the grease joints a little, you might say. Plant manager came out when he heard about it, obviously in PR mode, and asked "Where'd they take the operator?" Dad goes, "I'm him." Manager says, "You are the luckiest SOB I've ever met."
Thanks for reminding me of that. I'll mention it at dinner. Dad's 93.

No explanation for what happened, just a world full of confused humans, trying to make sense of it all.
Some of it would appear to be metaphysical, but maybe not. Different entities have different answers, and there may be "prophets" among the people, with miracles happening... or maybe there aren't.
I would say Season 1 was more of a setup, a season long preamble, if you will. Now that we know these people, they are operating in ways that seem bizarre, but strangely, real and sane.

I really hated the way they ended Boardwalk Empire. Not just the final scene, but the fact that they whole last season was just there to artificially tie everything up.
If you go into "The Leftovers" with something of an open mind, and be aware there are religious themes (there would have to be), just try to remember these people are all crazy because millions of people just up and disappeared from the planet, all at once, with no warning, no nothing. Just, one minute they were there, the next, they weren't.
Find the opening credits for Season 2 somewhere. I'm sure it's easy to find. A very twangy female singer... with still photos... it's brilliant. It will pretty much give you everything you need to know going in.

I wish they would give her character more to do. We see her chiefly as a cancer victim, but you know she's capable of a lot more.
And I'm not sure I understand the connection you're making between this season and season 1. Perhaps there's some details about season 1 I've forgotten.

When a backhoe operator hit a gas main in Cheyenne, WY we could see the flame tower from Windsor, CO (over 50 miles away) in daylight. John called to make sure it wasn't that the ammonia nitrate plant he worked at in Cheyenne had blown up. They never found the operator, of course. Not sure how much was left of the backhoe either.
