51 it's really Sudan and another country the French fucked up

Before the French "administered" it as part of their Sudan, it was three overlapping tribal empires that regularly starved to death. All the way to death. As usual, the westerners' great aggression was to impose the concept of nationhood. There are no Westphalian states in islam.

You never see the phrase "Near East" anymore. The old Far East is all growed up. We have the Middle East with no other Easts to frame it. Mo's Africa was the Near East. For some reason, it now has to be Saharan and sub-Saharan. This would make the new Europe "Super-Saharan." And it will be.

Take that ISIS!:

During the coming year, manning levels in the Armys major components and certain reserve programs stand to be reduced by 30,000 soldiers as a result of budget legislation awaiting President Obamas signature.

The military personnel section of the FY 2016 National Defense Authorization Act requires the Army to reach these manning levels by Sept. 30:

Regular Army: 475,000 soldiers, a cut of 15,000.
Army National Guard: 342,000 soldiers, a cut of 8,200.
Army Reserve: 198,000 soldiers, a cut of 4,000.

In what world can the minority leader prevent the majority leader from bringing a bill to the floor for an up or down vote?

143 From Mayo:

After treatment, a small number of people still have some symptoms, such as muscle aches and fatigue. 154 what i find amusing in a sick way is the moral equivalence , if a murder/or attack is committed by a presumed christian, it is the gun/implement of murder and the persons fault for badness. for others it is culture or outside threat that made them commit murder/attack.

in some communities they hold up their murderer as some type of martyr in the other communities that the purported murder must belong to, they call that community 'member'' a fkn murderer that needs to be imprisoned, punished etc, certainly not held as a martyr for any cause.

161 Up until about 1996, DOS was the "killer app". Windows was designed around running DOS applications. NT (circa 1994) was entirely different, but it wasn't until well after Windows NT 5.1 that the DOS userbase was finally marginalized. I mean, you can still run legacy DOS apps, but you will get just as good of performance out of an old 80486 running 3.11. (and for really good performance and concurrency, you can run 'em under dosbox on linux)

Hell, there are still places running DOS applications with a Novell backend. Because it works. And if you're running IPX/SPX and you don't have any TCP/IP drivers installed at all, it's pretty secure.

The details of the powder charge and the efficiency of combustion wasn't discussed in the article I saw.

That's because AQ got in trouble about 9-11 with other muslims because they didn't broadcast an opportunity to convert or give muslims a chance to flee first. 276 RDBrewer:

One of my closest friends is an accomplished painter, and you may find his work interesting. His current work is rather apocalyptic for whatever reason. But he uses paint to play with foreground-background, flat-textured, and deal with the question of why do painters even bother when there's such a thing as photography? Anyway, he's thoughtful and worth a look. http://rwmullenix.blogspot.com/ (And no, this is not my work.)

281 I was recently reminded of some old software I had, and I decided to try it out. But it only runs on DOS. No problem, because I can make an MS-DOS virtual machine under VMware. But then I open the box. I knew it was on floppies, but I didn't realize they were 5.25" floppies. Fortunately a friend of a friend has one of my very, very old computers with both 3.5" and 5.25" floppy drives.

I've still got a Jazz drive with serial port cable. Only reason is because nobody wants it.

294 I see a lot of "nice" people working themselves into an anti-Christian lather, making up imaginary shortcomings to condemn Christians for.

I'm not seeing a lot of it, but its a desperate attempt to defend radical Islam or put people on the defensive. One possible response is to accept that everything they say is true, and compare it to just the latest deed of Muslims.

Since they don't really care about your counter arguments, facts, or truth about Christians or Christianity anyway, concede and then show that even at their worst... still not as bad as the guys they are trying to protect.

Hah. If I may be permitted to chickify the blog for a second, there was a bit in You've Got Mail that covers that. That movie felt like a bunch of op-eds Nora Ephron always meant to publish but never did, strung together with a romance plot, but the godfather bit from it was one of the better ones.

[to Kathleen Kelly (Shopgirl) in instant message] "The Godfather is the I Ching. The Godfather is the sum of all wisdom. The Godfather is the answer to any question. What should I pack for my summer vacation? 'Leave the gun, take the cannoli.' What day of the week is it? 'Maunday, Tuesday, Thursday, Wednesday.' And the answer to your question is 'Go to the mattresses.' You're at war. 'It's not personal, it's business. It's not personal it's business.' Recite that to yourself every time you feel you're losing your nerve. I know you worry about being brave, this is your chance. Fight. Fight to the death."

408 I have never understood the liking the Godfather film seems to draw.

It is a tale of villains and cutthroats committing heinous acts in nice clean suits. It is a film glorifying evil.

People these days complain about criminal underground movies and gangbanger flicks, even among people I know, but love the Godfather.

What makes this film different from the crime films of today? There's woman-beating, there's murder, there's utilitarianism, theft, intimidation, and hatred all around. Sure, there's no strip joints (that I remember) or women hanging their asses out of a thong for twenty minutes per film, but I would take the hypersexed female leads instead of the glorification of evil.

Don't understand that film at all, nor the following it has.

"I'd really like to thank you." Japanese, grinning and bowing: "Sank you, sank you."
Rickles: "Yeah, I'd really like to thank you for making me spend four years in the jungle in WWII."
And following up with," So you are over here, what? Touring our naval bases?"
It was hilarious.

443 @408 It is a beautifully made film. And I agree with you about everything else.

Anyone who had to do business, or in a lot of cases, just survive, in the same city as one of those "family" organizations has nothing but disgust and horror for their ways, their style, their existence. And as a people the Americans of the Twenties through the Sixties were willing to give up a lot of freedoms to have them seen off. Union corruption, corporate corruption, and political corruption as we know it would not be possible without what they did, and in a few cases still do.

Fascinating story of truly repellent characters. Anybody who thinks there is something cool about them is seriously fucked up. Morally corrupt. And a poser.

So, yeah, great movie. Great sequel. And I hate it.

Couple things I naively thought we were done with by the mid-60's. Gangster movies. Horror movies, especially vampires. And fake wrestling.

It was hilarious.

450 What makes this film different from the crime films of today? There's
woman-beating, there's murder, there's utilitarianism, theft,
intimidation, and hatred all around. Sure, there's no strip joints (that
I remember) or women hanging their asses out of a thong for twenty
minutes per film, but I would take the hypersexed female leads instead
of the glorification of evil.

Yeah, but there's a certain subtlety about it...(spoiler alerts)
Woman-beating - Carlo beats up Connie, but it's a setup to draw out Sonny. Carlo gets garroted. Mrs Meanie says "Yeah!" every time.
Murder - All the other 5 families were lining up against Michael's regime; Michael outwits 'em all, even Barzini, who set up Sonny, and the pimp Tattaglia
Theft - Vito buys political influence; that's how things are done. It's a shortcut thru an already corrupt legal system (alludes to what they did to Lucky Luciano)
Intimidation - Again, subtle. If you're not trying to intimidate people, you're not working hard enough
Hatred - Actually, no. Michael does what he does out of love of his family.

I agree that it could have used more nudity.

True. But one must consider the difference in slug mass also, and small differences in velocity make a big difference as muzzle energy will vary as the square of velocity.

458 Don Rickles is just flat out hilarious. His autobiography is great too, especially how he met Sinatra.

Basically he was at a club where Sinatra was, with an implausibly beautiful girl (he's always been a schlub, but a funny, very confident one, so, score) and the girl was just squirming in her chair with how much she loved Sinatra. So Rickles sends the waiter over with a note to Sinatra so he can meet the girl. Sinatra, always willing to talk to a pretty girl and a decent guy about the public came over.

Rickles says "do you mind, I'm trying to talk here!" to the interruption, and Sinatra just died. From then on, tight friends and Sinatra did wonders for his career. Rickles was the only guy that could insult and rip on Sinatra safely.

Dear friends and fellow travelers in an internet box

Please keep in regular prayer Insomniac who is losing his job today and has a number of personal responsibilities. All this-for those who have gone through a job loss- is very hard and stressful and additionally so if you are not a bright, young (Well, he's bright anyway; :^) person. I am praying that rough places be made smooth for him in everyday that is needed.

I think it's great that the fellow believers- Christian and Jewish- can pray and the other folks can send good vibes and wishes, Soi don't be shy in asking if you need prayer. I certainly do and am grateful for your prayers.

Some films just bleed into the cultural vernacular. Casablanca for example. And the comments here would be lesser without them!

479 I am shocked, shocked to learn that some of you have not seen Casablanca.

There's a story about Casablanca that may or may not be true, but its too good to ignore. So during the filming, Bogie finishes his scenes and goes to relax, still in costume. The director realizes he needs one more shot, so he sends someone to go get Bogie, who is tired and wants to just take it easy a moment. The director says he just wants one more shot, he doesn't even have to talk.

All Bogie has to do is nod.

That scene? When the band leader looks to Bogie when requested to play La Marseillaise and he nods. Its the turning point in the film, his shift of character from being totally neutral and selfish to caring and being on one side. Its also one of the greatest scenes in movie history with particular significance lately. The most downloaded and viewed clip on Youtube last week.

Soros-Backed Group Launches Bid to Keep Syrian Refugees Flowing

A group masquerading as conservative but backed by left-wing foundations including billionaire George Soros's Foundation to Promote Open Society (FPOS) has launched an online advertising campaign in defense of bringing Syrian refugees to the United States.

The banner ads bear tag lines like, "Support freedom, not fear," and, "America is better when we welcome refugees." They lead to a microsite located at Americaisbetter.org with Old Glory-clothed, American flag-waving young people, with a light-skinned blonde leading the way for others who appear to be ethnic minorities partially or fully obscured behind her.

515 Way up at the top, someone asked if a cannon can fire in a vacuum, and the answer is "yes, no problem." The reason is that the propellant chemicals used in bullets etc has enough oxygen in it to fuel its own combustion.

LOL. Despite my earlier comments, I actually do understand your basic attitude. After all, I have relatives and friends who constantly badger me to watch certain TV shows but I don't. That's mostly due to my schedule, as I have to be very selective with the 3-5 shows that I watch regularly, but I sometimes will not watch a show because I'm sick of being badgered by others to watch it. But those are TV shows, not classic 40-year-old movies.

It gave me pause. Strangely enough, that's the only time I've ever felt that way.

Shortly after 9-11, I boarded a cross-country flight and a man with a certain profile boarded the plane carrying a large aluminum briefcase. Obviously, nothing came of it.

Some years later, I was on the Metro when a person of a certain profile got on and began reading a certain religious text out loud in a certain language. I changed cars.

It can be ingrained from birth or be a seizure lasting only moments.

And one can only reason that there is some guiding principle or actor that inspires it.

And much of the time those being seized are unaware of the true result of their actions.

My plan is to hide in room so I don't have to deal with him. I told husband it is his turn as I am contracted out. At the very least, someone who saw the movies would be able to catch certain references that are made as common knowledge in the course of general conversation.

Really, in any social setting a casual conversation is going to hit on some reference to a line or plot or something in one of these movies we're talking about. Not getting it will mark the person as slow or some sort of idiot.

Posted by: jwest at November 20, 2015 12:10 PM (Zs4uk)

Very good points. I occasionally will use dated pop culture references when speaking with 20-somethngs. I'm always shocked when they haven't seen the movie or TV show that I reference (the same is true regarding historical events). I know they're 25 years younger than me but I just thought that they would understand the references. Then again, at least people their age have the excuse of the reference being 30-40 years old.

Is there anyone here who thought Obama was an Atheist and now thinks he really is a Muslim after all?
I've moved into that camp. I also think he's a Marxist but that his ties to Islam are closer than I thought. originally.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at November 20, 2015 12:28 PM (No/ki)

I think he's an atheist and supports anyone or group that is anti-American or he thinks has been oppressed by the Man. So that's his support of Islam over Christianity. And add to that his rabid hatred of white people. He's getting back at us and evening the score

601 Bigger question: Should we start putting people who don't watch classic movies in camps? After all, they have no place in civilized society.

604 I thought Obama was at best a Black Liberationist. And his wife too.

Wright's "church" is very typical of small churches all around the south side of Chicago. I think Chicago it where Black Muslims originated. (correct me) But being a Black Muslim is somewhat different than being Muslim. Or so I thought.

I knew he was bad news when we could find out nothing of his past and what we did know didn't look healthy.

I started believing he was an actual Muslim after he went on his World Bow Tour. His bowing to the Saudi Prince kind of sealed the deal.

Since then, of course he's become more blatant about where his true allegiance lies.

So let me get this straight, the House passes a bipartisan bill having to do with an issue of immediate and great national security importance and the Senate promptly adjourns and closes for the holiday so they don't have to vote on it.

Worst of all the Senate minority leader has said that the bill will not be allowed to reach the senate floor.

In what world can the minority leader prevent the majority leader from bringing a bill to the floor for an up or down vote?

613 I don't believe Obama is a Muslim, or even a committed Marxist. He is Marxist Lite, the Marxist equivalent of a Christian who goes to church on Easter and Christmas. I think at heart, he is an Obamist who was recruited and groomed to act as a spokesmodel for the Reds. He is to the hard-left as Flo is to Progressive Insurance (itself founded by a Red, coincidentally), or perhaps more appropriately as Jared is/was to Subway.

I suspect the deal with him was to read whatever shit they put on the teleprompter, and in between bouts of doing that he could enjoy himself. Committed Marxists eat, live, sleep, and breathe Marxism, and work tirelessly to screw up the world. Obama, OTOH, left to his own devices, is obviously a layabout.

618 Growing up we had one TV that got 4 channels. The cultural cross over was greater than it is now I think.

Sure, but if there weren't re-runs there was no way to possibly see older shows. One of the running jokes in the Dick Van Dyke show was the closet he jammed everything into and as soon as he opened the door, he'd be covered with falling stuff. My mom remembered it well but I had no connection to that at all. Really funny once you see it, but unless you do, its just some reference.

But yeah, EVERYONE watched MASH when I was growing up, so it was shared. I remember well when Bob & Doug McKenzie was huge from SCTV, and every single person in High School at the same time loved them.

These days... there's really nothing like that any more.

619 I think Obama is an atheist (self-worshipping narcissist), but his default sensibility is Muslim. He spent his formative childhood years in Indonesia in a Muslim school, reading the Koran, hearing the call to prayer.

Think of all the atheists/agnostics here who have a sort of default Christian culture sensibility because they grew up in a Christian environment - celebrating Christmas and Easter, reading the 10 commandments, etc.

Well think back to when you were that age, not so long ago. Did you understand old people's references to The Dick Van Dyke Show or the Korean War? Sometimes its tough to keep in mind the short time period young people have been around. I mean even someone 20 years old has only been really paying attention to the world for maybe 8-10 years. That's the Bush administration.

Posted by: Christopher Taylor at November 20, 2015 12:32 PM (39g3+)

I'm actually knowlegeable about pop culture going back to before I was born but your point is a fair one. However, you would think that younger people would at least have seen the top movies of all time considering how often they're on cable TV and available through various streaming services.

Maybe parents aren't exposing them to classic movies, like my parents and grandparents did with me. For example, my father and I together rented flicks like "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Dirty Dozen" in the '80s when I was a teen. When I took a film class as a free elective in undergrad, we watched a ton of classic movies and I had already seen 90% of them, thanks to my father and grandfather.

_______

I was born 30 years after the end of WW2 but I know what happened. I also know generally speaking what went down in the 50s and 60s and 70s, before I was old enough to really understand the world around me.

Today's 25 year old thinks history started in 1990 and probably doesn't know Reagan was president in the 1980s.

That's the difference.
