Rubio Vs. Cruz on Amnesty

andy McCarthy has a great piece explaining that no, Cruz has not previously supported amnesty -- and Rubio knows that, but is claiming otherwise to make Cruz seem "just as bad" as Rubio on the subject.

Rubio knows he cannot make himself look better on the subject; and, in fact, it seems like he does not even want to make himself look "better" to those who disagree with him. Rubio is pro-amnesty deep in his heart. He's not just bought and paid for by amnesty-seeking billionaires -- if he were, we could change his opinion by simply changing his patron.

No, he's a true believer, and doesn't want to renounce his enthusiasm for amnesty.

So, unable (and unwilling) to make his position look better to the Republican primary electorate, he tries to make Cruz look worse.

A really interesting take by McCarthy. Do read it.

Also, Ted Cruz released his immigration policy yesterday. He has been criticized for proposing expanding the H1B visa pool; now he calls for suspending the program for six months and halting it if unemployment remains high.

That Rubio could ever be taken seriously (forget the amnesty insanity) was just the 10,000th superfluous confirmation that this is an unserious country.

A somewhat glib, otherwise unimpressive figure who stands out only because of the jaw-dropping mediocrity and degradation of the public square. He recites worn "inspirational" crap about his life story and platitudes about America that most 13-yr olds could do when American education and culture were, well, "American".

His gang of eight thing has no parallel I can think of as far as demonstrating just Olympian cluelessness, both political and substantive.

Cruz? Who knows. But Rubio is a ridiculous figure, even against the unrecognizably degraded back-drop of what American public life has become.

46 RINO Rubio can't walk back his sellout in the gang of 8.

Nor does he try.

He has never repudiated the substance of the Gang of Eight bill... which included unconditional waivers on all of its enforcement provisions, an easy path to citizenship, and unlimited refugee status for anyone in the world who claimed to be "stateless."

When challenged on the Gang of Eight Bill, Rube says two things:

1. It tried to do too much at once. (But all of the individual pieces were OK)

2. We can't do legalization until we regain the trust of the American people (Then, they can screw us over again.)

Also, the Rube has never ruled out any sort of "Provisional Amnesty" while he works out the kinks in his full-on Amnesty scheme.

55 I find the argument that Cruz was only interested in calling their bluff
too clever by half, especially when you examine the arguments Cruz was
making at the time:

Cruz went on to say that failing to pass his amendment threatened to kill the immigration bill's chance in the House of Representatives. "I don't want immigration reform to fail, " Cruz said. "I want immigration reform to pass. And so I would urge people of good faith on both sides of the aisle, if the objective is to pass common sense immigration reform that secures the borders, that improves legal immigration, and that allows those who are illegally to come out of the shadows."

Does that sound like a man who is opposed to immigration reform? Watch the video at the link: http://tws.io/1ObVQxv.

65 Also, to Rube, Jeb! and the rest of the GOP Establishment, opposition to Amnesty is simply racist and an issue of uneducated hicks who worry about the brown horde invading white America. Cruz gets that it is an economic issue, and a midddle-class is concerned about stagnating wages and lost jobs.

Posted by: V the K at November 16, 2015 01:06 PM (O7MnT)

66 Cruz has the right position for the republican primary, but Rubio has the right idea for something that is actually going to work.

Ideally, after a wall is built and you have control over the border, you want a system that allows you to deport the undesirables quickly and easily while allowing the option of keeping the ones you want to stay.

What nobody who throws the term "amnesty" around explains is that the real victory for the right will be a deal where no one who is here now illegally will ever get citizenship.

For those that stay, they receive permanent residency. No citizenship. Ever.

This is the only way this is going to work and the only way birthright citizenship is going to be ended.

But just off the cuff it seems Cruz' 6-month H1B suspension is exactly the sort of wrong signal. It basically conveys: oops, I effed up that part of things, here's my non-credible and politically/substantively non-responsive tweak to fix it!

So, provisionally, face-plant by Cruz.

Amnesty is a public policy IQ test. If one doesn't realize what a catastrophically open-ended disaster anything approaching amnesty would be, they simply aren't very smart - ina practical sense, regarding public policy. The question of "values", tolerance, etc. aren't even engaged, the practical aspects take over instantly.

Amnesty means a ramping up of the lawlessness of the last 30 years, and the unrecoverable final elimination of any credibility in dealing with this fundamental issue of sovereignty, rule of law, and common sense. Not recognizing this makes Rubio, and Ryan, who are already wrong even within their own artificial framework, effectively as stupid and reckless as Obama.

Small print leads to big trouble. Where are the definitions on this?

"Unemployment high" by which official metric?

U-3? U-6? Labor force participation rate?

Then, "unemployment high" will be defined by what hard numbers on that metric? Where are the numerical levels at which H-1B gets frozen?

If citizens keep dropping out of participation in the labor force because they can't find work, then the "headline" U-3 unemployment number, which doesn't include them, is going to eventually fall to what looks like classical full employment, even though it's not by any imaginable means full employment.

133 Very insightful article. As a Cruz fan, I'm biased, so I'm looking for any excuse to explain away the attacks on his immigration moves. Having said that, I think this is as good a defense as can be. At least with respect to Cruz' general position on immigration.

As to his stance on H1B visas, I can see him shifting in his paper that just came out. My own thinking on this has shifted, so I'm forgiving. From an economic perspective, I want skilled immigration. But I think the definition of skilled needs to change. I mean, 50 years ago the US would probably take anyone and everyone with a Computer Science degree from wherever in the world. But today that doesn't make as much sense. But then again, what about entrepreneurs and enterprising individuals.

Actually I think this all comes back to welfare. We need to get rid of it. People who come here should expect nothing but the opportunity to make something of themselves, with the gov't out of the way. This would solve all of our problems. Crap.

150 Cruz has flip flopped on immigration. The main reason for this is that it his previous position blocks his path to the nomination.

He originally planned to present himself as the top choice of evangelicals and perform well enoughin Iowa so that he could become the most appealing candidate left as people get Trumped out and the primaries wear on. The problem for Cruz is that much of the mainstream GOP support has flowed to Rubio while evangelical support in Iowa has stuck with Carson.

The flip on immigration is designed to draw support off of Trump with the hope that he can skate on his new found belief that legal immigration is bad, while simultaneously hammering on Rubio for his own evolving position.

The problem for Cruz is that he is still running third among voters in his "lane" to the GOP nomination. Rubio is pretty much unchallenged in his lane. Money spent to try and weaken Rubio doesn't help Cruz against Trump or Carson. He's sort of trapped.

The problem is, when Disney did that, there was still a pretty strong work ethic and basic moral fiber running through American youth and workers.

Today? You can train them all you want but too many people don't want to work hard, want everything without trouble, time, or labor, and throw a tantrum if it doesn't happen.

155 67 I'm not opposed to immigration reform, either. Nobody
should be, the system sucks. Badly. Its just a matter of how and what
you mean by that. "come out of the shadows" is the troubling phrase.

More from Cruz during that same hearing:

If this amendment is adopted to the current bill, the effect would be that those 11 million, under this current bill, would still be eligible for RPI status. They would still be eligible for legal status, and indeed, under the terms of the bill, they would be eligible for LPR [green card] status as well, so they are out of the shadows, which the proponents of this bill repeatedly point to as their principle objective: to provide legal status for those who are here illegally to be out of the shadows. This amendment would allow that to happen.

Why is he is offering reassurances if he opposes legalization, especially when coupled with his statement that he "want immigration reform"- including a provision to "[allow] those who are illegally to come in out of the shadows"- to pass?

*The quote at #55 should read "come in out of the shadows".

186 Suspending the H1B program for 6 months is a dodge. It is a tactic to wait for the issue to cool off and then to return to business as usual.

However, compared to amnesty and general squishiness on illegal immigration, support for H1B is a misdemeanor. The capital crime is allowing our country to be overrun with illegal aliens. While I wish Cruz had a different position on H1B, I can tolerate his politics on the issue as long as he is true blue on getting rid of the illegals.

That's why it's so great, because it's their choice.

If they want citizenship, when the bill passes they know they have to leave and go home. Start the process from their country just like the law says.

If they choose to take the permanent resident status, they are saying upfront that they don't want citizenship.

It was totally up to them.

People understand choices. They will think this is fair.

Seriously though, how much does a human being need? If there ever was an argument for the empty hollow in mankind's soul without God, its Hollywood. These people have literally every possible thing a human being thinks they want and still they want more because they feel so lonely and empty. And its never enough.

I remember an interview with some rocker where he pointed out that after a while beautiful teeny bopper nookie loses its charm and you need ever crazier and more perverted stuff to get that thrill. And eventually you end up doing things you would have shot someone for suggesting back when you started out.

Its that old Hedonist paradox: the very thing that gives you a thrill takes it away, its never as great again, so you seek ever greater experiences and highs. Charlie Sheen is Exhibit A of the depravity of fallen man and the desperate need for a savior. He's no worse than anyone else, he just had all the chances we never get.

256 This probably belongs on the previous thread but here goes.

I'm getting concerned that if ISIS does keep up their attacks on the West, even if they are countered or attacks are made back on them, that the current leaders won't take a page from the Viet Cong Tet Offensive and declare that there's no hope of defeating them and we must capitulate (well they always say "have peace talks" but that's what they mean).

If a few more attacks are bad enough, we just may start to hear this sort of crap from our modern Walter Cronkites about how they're winning and unstoppable and we must find another way to deal with them.

Anyone believe that the feckless leadership we're now saddled with along with support from the supine media will stand up to ISIS?

We can't even get our own people to agree to THINK about stopping an unwise inflow of potential terrorists in the face of just one blatant attack brought on by a similar inflow.

And btw, did anyone really think we got new leadership when Ryan was elected Speaker?

Only ones showing some sense and some guts are a few State Governors and how long will they be able (or even can they) to pressure and the courts of the Federal Gov't?

He doesn't CARE if he's blamed. Or the Democrats.

They're immune (almost) due to their possession of a gigantic propaganda machine let alone 50% of the citizens will agree with them. (that some how we deserve being killed)

It's like fighting Muslims in general; first you have to wrap your heads around the fact that most of them won't surrender. They will fight to the death. They embrace death. You can't demoralize them with the threat as they are ready and willing to die if they can take you with them.

It's a philosophy of existence that Western Civ has long had a problem dealing with during conflict.

We tend to slowly jack up the kill ratio, expecting that eventually the enemy will capitulate because they see they can't possibly win. That doesn't work with Muslims. They are not deterred.

To win, we must be ruthless and engage in total and complete annihilation of them and their support structure (women and children) if we don't we're just wasting our time.

Call me evil call me vicious but tell me I'm wrong in the face of their history.

You seem to be under the false impression that we lost the Vietnam War at the Paris peace tables. That is false. We won the war on the ground in Vietnam. We came to a draw at the peace talks. We lost the Vietnam War in Washington D.C.

After Nixon resigned, the next election in 1974 gave Democrats veto proof majorities in both houses of Congress. The very first thing that the Democrats did with those veto proof majorities was to cut off all aid to the Republic of South Vietnam. When the North Vietnamese invaded, the South Vietnamese fought like they had in 1972 when the annihilated a North Vietnamese with more armored vehicles than Heinz Guderian used to conquer France in 1940. Problem is that when the South Vietnamese ran out of ammunition, the US would not resupply them and that was the end of South Vietnam.

Come from behind victory against the Orange One in FL? Good for him.

In a lesser sense, obviously, just another Obama phenomenon. Ethnicity, style, appearance over substance (recall Obama, in 2008, "ran" on major policy points indistinguishable from a Dem of the 1980s, or most of the GOP - not on the "fundamental transformation" single-date-point statement from late in the campaign).

Anyway, his Gang of Eight stunt has no parallel, in terms of both substance and politics, as a catastrophic and laughably inept move, that I am aware of, in modern political history.

Of course, he also called out Trump for his outrageous innuendo against Carson. If Trump doesn't start getting his act together, I think that Erick Ericsson may end up being right and that Cruz will get the nomination.

The H1B visa tactics designed to kill the Gang of Eight Amnesty bill will not hurt Cruz in the least. I get it, Cruz can 'evolve' on H1B but Rubio can't repudiate Gang of Eight.

I think Rubio would be given a greater benefit of the doubt if he wasn't saying one thing in English and another in Spanish so often on the topic. And if he was a bit more focused on being conservative instead of being the hispanic guy who's good on immigration.

he should, ya know, LEAD

When Boehner was Speaker, a number of conservatives complained- and for good reasons- that too much was being decided and drafted by leadership instead of by the committees with jurisdiction, the chairmen and members who are actually experts on certain issues. All that Ryan is doing here is allowing the committees to work as intended. Besides, any bill addressing the Syrian refugees has to be drafted and passed by a committee. As far as the Conference is concerned, the matter will be addressed when members return to D.C. In the meantime, Ryan has asked that they be briefed about the Paris attacks.

True, but McCarthy is asserting that Rubio cannot claim that Cruz's views on immigration were once quite similar because Cruz was supposedly playing eleventh-dimensional chess, a claim which is proven false by Cruz's own words. Again, the bottom line is that every Republican presidential candidate has at some time or another supported legalization. Last I heard, Cruz currently refused to say whether he supported it or not. With regards to Rubio, the debate over whether he is trustworthy or not depends on whether you believe he truly learned something from the Gang of Eight experience.

Posted by: Miss80sBaby at November 16, 2015 02:06 PM (YjDyJ)

379 Let's start with the obvious. Rubio is a pathological liar. Lying is requisite behavior for politicians, but unlike Democrats, Republicans don't base their preference for a candidate on how much he or she lies. Hillary is the Democratic frontrunner because she lies so often, albeit poorly.

Rubio's initial lying was particularly pernicious given he did so to curry favor with the very people who tried to defeat him and put the equally execrable Charlie Crist into his seat. Rubio slapped those who elected him. He displayed atrocious judgment. He speaks eloquently but says nothing. Fortunately with his policy choices, he acts stupidly and accomplishes nothing. As an aside, the cucktingent which supports Rubio deserve him given how he would change positions overnight on abortion and other issues that matter to them.

In rapid, jaw-dropping fashion, Rubio went overnight from some limp-wristed Establishment type who wanted to let hundreds of thousands of jihadis into the United States and now is in opposition to this relocation. Wonder what happened?

McCarthy has Rubio's number.

I went on to say that it's the feckless leadership and the supine media that will cave.

Which is what happened after Tet.

Offensive and declare that there's no hope of defeating them and we must
capitulate
(well they always say "have peace talks" but that's what
they mean).

They will call their capitulate Peace talks but what happens will be capitulation.

And Yes, I was alive then, and no I don't believe we lost Tet, we lost when that pos Cronkite convinced the Nation that we lost during Tet. And then Congress (led by the Democrats and some useful idiot Republicans) started backing down and suddenly what was just a mirage became a reality.

Aided and abetted by the feckless supine media.

No, that's not the analogy since the media is always unfairly attacking Republicans (although they don't really attack Bush that much so the analogy fails on multiple fronts).

Rubio's claim is worse because he is saying that he and Cruz have similar positions when that is demonstrably false. People can say that Cruz was or was not playing 11th dimensional chess on the H1B visa issue but that issue is a shiny object for people who think that it is the same thing as amnesty, which intelligent followers of politics know is completely dishonest.

You can have your position on the H1B visa issue and actually, whether Cruz was for it or against it is immaterial since AMNESTY is the issue in play here, not legal immigration (which is what the visa program is).

We are always complaining on our side that the media/liberals conflate legal immigration with illegal immigration as a way to accuse us of being anti-immigrant. And then here we see some posters conflating the H1B visa issue with the Gang of Eight amnesty plan.

These things are not the same by a far piece.

Trump is a masterful marketer. And then there are those who just want an outsider, issues be damned. Cruz, while an outsider inside the enemy camp, maybe is still too much of a politician for some Trump supporters even though we'll probably find out that a President Trump is the consummate politician after all.

All I have done is provided evidence as to why I believe my junior senator (Cruz) believes/believed in legalizing illegal immigrants. Contrary to your statement, I am hardly the only one who feels that way. Moreover, I readily acknowledged that whether or not one believes Rubio is currently being sincere is a matter of opinion/trust linked to where one ranks immigration as an issue in the 2016 election.

As for my comments regarding House Republicans, one of the promises Ryan made to the House Freedom Caucus is that he would return power to the committees. I also made a number of references to process. The idea that say, the House Budget Committee oversees budgetary issues is a matter of fact, not opinion. Same generally goes for the procedure in passing bills. With regards to taking offense, the only people I have an issue with as far as this post is concerned are McCarthy and Cruz. If I was one of those people who only spoke with those whom I agreed, I would have left a long time ago.

408 Oh, Ace. Remember all those tongue-bathings you gave Rubio once upon a time? (And I am not sure that's not literal...you went through a really creepy phase right then.) And this is how it ends. Sad.

Do me a favor -- sometime next year, could you publish a full list of all the candidates you like for the 2016 elections? I just want to know who you'll be hating five years from now. Staying ahead of the curve, and all that

409 Cruz.

410 We busted Allah on Friday over his tactics to paint Cruz as the same as Rubio. Poor Allah has really lost his edge.

411 So someone tell me how Cruz is different from Rubio in his handling of the illegal immigrants who are already here?

His big, bad ol' immigration plan doesn't say a thing about those millions, yet I'm supposed to think he's the hardliner on immigration?

Yeah, go sell that crap to someone else, Ace.

412 I love how the Ace haters wait until a thread is dead and passed by to sneak in and throw a rock then run away. Cute.

413 @ 412: If you were talking about me, I haven't run away from anything. And I get to the threads when I get to the threads; I'm not on this site 24/7. If you guys haveindulged your short attention spans and moved wholly on to another thread in the meantime, well, I'm still gonna comment. Sorry not sorry.

414 And if you're talkin' 'bout me, Christopher, yeah, what Demosthenes said!
