35 So there seems to be some shock and dismay that Ben Carson, a.k.a. Colin Powell, M.D., came out yesterday and said that it's "not pragmatic" to deport illegal aliens and that they need to be allowed to stay and "come out of the shadows".

So, amnesty by any other name. As expected, as predicted.

I'm not sure why it should be a surprise to anyone. Carson has never had much interest in the immigration issue. In his _One Nation_ book, immigration isn't even mentioned in the index in the back.

Posted by: Tim in Illinois. Old and unimproved. at November 12, 2015 09:43 AM (WVsWD)

I knew he had retired, but, his candidacy leaves me very cold for a number of reasons:

1. Medicine is a very closed field and even though it has business aspects, it's not the same as corporate experience. A surgeon has leadership skills, but, they are limited to people who are required to obey him instantly or face consequences.
2. He is not attractive on camera. He comes across as sleepy and bored.
3. Being an outsider is cool, but, he's an outsider on too many levels.
4. I think being a Seventy Day Adventist is going to be as attractive to the average voter as Romney's Mormon faith.
5. His race hurts him in several ways. There are a lot of folks who are so burnt by Obama that no Black man/woman can hope to get their vote for President--even though they are not racists and regularly vote for other Black candidates. Obama has just been so awful and overreached so many times that he has spoiled things for Blacks as POTUS/VPOTUS. The media hates Carson's type of Black success story

With all that said, I think he's a fine man, but, against Hillary, he loses to her in a landslide.

Gender is fluid, safe spaces are even more so. Today's safe space is tomorrow's protest point. I think that a big damn part of this is that these kids were coddled and slid through high school without getting any real skills for life or academia. So they get to college and they flounder and because for the very first time, they have to behave as a quasi semi-adult, they can't handle it, so they do what as always worked--they throw a tantrum for made up reasons.

And soccer just got even more sissified, if such a thing were possible:

The United States Soccer Federation has adopted a new policy prohibiting children under the age of 11 from heading balls.

In adopting the policy change, the group will settle a federal class-action suit filed last year by attorneys representing former youth soccer players who said that the Fédération Internationale de Football Association and U.S soccer leagues had failed to to adequately protect young players from head injuries.

PURDUE PRESIDENT SLAPS DOWN ANTI-FREE SPEECH IDIOCY AT YALE AND MIZZOU!!

While we're continued to be amazed by the idiotic and unfortunate events at Yale and the University of Missouri where it seems that wannabe-60s revolutionaries are taking over the joints, you can be assured that there's at least one University that doesn't take such guff.

That would be Purdue, as exhibited by this letter that went out to the entire campus, letting them know that such shenanigans won't be appreciated there:

Speaking of kollideges, can anyone answer RDB's question from the
sidebar concerning Yale's prohibition of James O'Keefe from their
campus? I'd kinda like to know what the law says.

Not that it'd be followed...

Posted by: BackwardsBoy at November 12, 2015 09:59 AM (LUgeY)

Normally private property is private property. However, some of the Yale campus may be public thoroughfare (for example, sidewalks and roads), and other parts of the campus may be generally open to the public (for example, gift shops, restaurants). It would be almost certainly within O'Keefe's rights to use such areas. Offices, dorms, etc. are likely protected. The more interesting part is whether Yale has a practice of allowing people into classrooms or lecture halls who are not students. If so, then they can't discriminate by content. But I bet there is something posted somewhere on a bulletin board that says such areas are closed to the public, except by invitation.

95 Also, O'Keefe is running a commercial enterprise, and as a property owner you have a lot of say over who can use your property commercially, even if you generally are open to the public. I can't go into the mall and set up a hot dog stand, but the mall can't prevent me from coming to window shop just because it doesn't like me.

I have to say, the Israeli female army looks pretty bad ass at times.

This is tricky, as more and more people are opting out of service to our country. They need recruits, so they are going illegals (nothing new), and women, etc.

There are places for women to serve. It would be silly to say that they are as strong as men. There are a few women who are stronger than some weaklings (see TFG tossing a baseball), but very few could cut it under normal circumstances. That said, there are still places they could serve to help, and some want to. And some do.

There are women who have served with great honor. I would never attack their patriotism.

What "generalization and innuendo?" Are you saying that surgeons don't need good hand-eye coordination and that that does not decrease with age? That's not some sort of insult, nor is it calling him senile. I know general surgeons in their 60's and '70's who now limit the procedures they do to very simple operations because they admit they're not up to more complex operations these days. Sheesh, it's not some big disgrace.

Paul is still relatively young. I have no idea if he still practices at all or if he has given up medicine to devote himself entirely to politics. It seems to me it would be very difficult to serve as a Senator and maintain a medical practice, but who knows, maybe someone has managed it.

FBI expands probe of Clinton emails, launches independent classification review

The FBI has expanded its probe of Hillary Clinton's emails, with agents exploring whether multiple statements violate a federal false statements statute, according to intelligence sources familiar with the ongoing case.

Fox News is told agents are looking at U.S. Code 18, Section 1001, which pertains to "materially false" statements given either in writing, orally or through a third party. Violations also include pressuring a third party to conspire in a cover-up. Each felony violation is subject to five years in prison.

This phase represents an expansion of the FBI probe, which is also exploring potential violations of an Espionage Act provision relating to "gross negligence" in the handling of national defense information.

"The agents involved are under a lot of pressure and are busting a--," an intelligence source, who was not authorized to speak on the record, told Fox News.

The section of the criminal code being explored is known as "statements or entries generally," and can be applied when an individual makes misleading or false statements causing federal agents to expend additional resources and time.

This is a retarded argument. People used to say this as a joke and then, somewhere along the line, people started to try and make this a real argument. It's lunacy.

You couldn't even make sense of the sentence by trying to parse it this way. But, you never got that far, obviously. Tell me, if you are trying to parse this as such, what does "at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution" modify? According to you, it applies equally to "natural born Citizen" and to "Citizen fo the United States", which means that no one who wasn't one of those two AT THE TIME OF THE ADOPTION OF THE CONSTITUTION would be eligible for the Presidency - i.e. no one after that generation died. That's just retarded.

If you're going to make some argument for someone's eligibility for the Presidency then do that. Don't try and make a mockery of English (as if the Founders were such awful writers that they couldn't figure out how to phrase some simple prescriptions) to try and make the grandfather clause (a little more than grandfathering since it allowed any citizen at the time of the adoption of the Constitution, not just one natural born to the colonies) into something it most clearly isn't and could never be.

This is pathetic. Really. You do not present a serious argument of any sort. It is intellectually offensive, at best.

Ugh. Husband had a heart attack, and was on top of wife, and drowned her. Their 35 y.o. daughter found them.

It's bad enough to lose your parents, but to find them nekkid in a hot tub? Eeek.

Which brings me to this: When you're staying in a hotel, do you ever wonder if anyone died in your room? Especially older, historic places.

However, many participants have already added expressions of solidarity to the protest, including support for the "#ConcernStudent1950" organization at Missouri, and support for the Palestinian cause.

What "generalization and innuendo?" Are you saying that surgeons
don't need good hand-eye coordination and that that does not decrease
with age? That's not some sort of insult, nor is it calling him senile.
I know general surgeons in their 60's and '70's who now limit the
procedures they do to very simple operations because they admit they're
not up to more complex operations these days. Sheesh, it's not some big
disgrace.

Paul is still relatively young. I have no idea if he still

Congress is not granted the power to define "natural born citizen". Congress does not have the power to define any first-level Constitutional language. If it did then Congress could just amend the Constitution any time it wanted by redefining the basic terms and language. That is NOT within Congress' power.

If one is a citizen of the United States AT BIRTH under provisions of a law passed by the Congress and signed by the President, you are a natural born citizen.

Incorrect.

So please, Cruz birthers, just stop it already.

Posted by: Circa (Insert Year Here) at November 12, 2015 10:42 AM (659DL)

You should stop making silly claims.

Maybe you need to speak with your boy TJ who thinks that there's no requirement to be a natural born citizen, at all? I think you could brainstorm up some good things.

The generalization and innuendo are that you have no idea what Ben Carson's eye-hand coordination and medical skills are, yet you are on this thread speculating that he is washed up as a surgeon. Why, I speculate that you are a paid blogger for one of the other candidates, because that is the kind of thing a paid blogger would do.
Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at November 12, 2015 10:38 AM (5f5bM)

Oh, good God, that is quite silly of you Carson isn't my first choice but I would vote for him if he were the nominee. I have nothing but admiration for his medical background. I didn't insult him. I responded to Tim in IL who opined that he needs to go back to performing surgery because he'd do more good as a doctor than as a politician.

I work with doctors. I know surgeons generally stop doing surgery, especially complex surgery (which brain surgery certainly is) before their primary care counterparts retire, because of loss of hand-eye coordination. Being a surgeon is more physically demanding than being an internist. That has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not he's qualified to be president, so stop acting like I'm "insinuating" anything.

My grandma died on Christmas Eve. We were all at my mother's house and did the gift exchange early (knowing she was in her last moments) and about an hour later, she died.

Honestly though, it wasn't bad. She had Elvis Christmas songs playing in the background and all of her family near her. The planning was a bit hectic, but not terrible. We had to get an out of state transfer which took a few days, but that gave everyone the time to do other Christmas obligations and then plan the funeral.

Could manage a POTUS vote for Trump, Carson, Fiorina and Paul. Would prefer Fiorina for VP because she knows the games and the old silverbacks in the Senate wouldn't con her too badly. Think she would do very well as the international representative at funerals, etc (they could not allow Slow Joe anywhere near that traditional role).

No way Jose -- Jeb, Rubio, Sicky-Kay, Christie, etc (can see the silverbacks in the GOPe salivating to get Doe-eyed Rubio under their thumbs).

Carson turning around the VA seems to me a good fit. Who better to understand some of the catastrophic brain injuries of some of our vets -- and make sure that they get the best of care?

Can you imagine if this country had taken terrorism as seriously as it had taken winning WWII? Put that level of commitment into it; considered it to be the threat that it deserved?

There would be an ISIS. Islam would have been relegated to the status it deserves - a 10th rate superstition, and some form of representative government would have taken root in muslim middle east.

Instead, and totally discounting ISIS and the rebirth of the cold war and the renewed apathy of Europe toward the threats it is facing, it is going to take an equivalent effort and commitment as was put forth for WWII to recover from eight years of Obama. (that idea is not mine. It came from James Woods' twitter, yesterday I think).

19 Trillion, nearly 200 trillion in unfunded liabilities.

I just noticed an ad for Coldwater Creek in the sidebar. Coldwater Creek filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy two years ago and their intellectual property, logo, etc. was bought by a venture group that has other retailers, such as Talbots.

I went to their site out of curiosity. Their website, their online catalog , and their clothing items are exactly the same style, presentation, etc. as they were pre bankruptcy. The parent company says there are no plans for opening brick and mortar retail , etc.

When I last visited a CC pre bankruptcy, the clothing was mostly cheap materials, targeting 70 year old Boca residents, looked like Hillary Clinton was a buyer, and was so overfilled with inventory you could hardly walk through the store. It was completely different from the unique, high quality, boutique like items their original catalog from Sandpoint ID feautred 20 years ago.

I don't understand why this company thinks the exact same formula that drove them into bankruptcy in 2011 is going to work better in 2015?

I'd be happy to make them a good deal on annexing Detroit. It's just across the river from Canada anyway.

Posted by: Jen the original at November 12, 2015 11:17 AM (E2mFK)

When the local CC branch went out of business, I thought it was just that store. I didn't realize the whole company had gone belly up.

But you're right about how the company went to hell. I used to love their stuff in the late '90's early '00's - it was unique, feminine and high quality. I wanted just about everything in their catalog. The last time I was in their store (about 5 years ago), I looked around and said "meh." I didn't see one thing I wanted.

361 Uh...sure. So, how was your gig last night?

Funny you should ax. We had no PA. Something in the somewhat expensive, computer-controlled mixing board was not working at all. The poor sound man was fit to be tied. We started about an hour later than scheduled, so we went down to The Pub and started drinking whilst we waited. I found a new beer compliments of my young guitar playing friend: Speckled Hen. Good stuff.

The sound man wound up plugging one mic into a spare guitar amp we had onstage and everyone took turns singing into it. Didn't sound too bad, sorta old school. No monitors, so the sax player couldn't hear himself well. Small crowd, even for a Wednesday.

Overall, it was pretty meh. We played well.

We got in, we got out, and nobody got hurt.

Again, I have to admire the Democrats.

A full year ahead of the election they are already readying the battlefield to get out their voters.

Now, the fact that what their voters want is objectively insane and bad for the country doesn't enter into the equation.

Their voters know that if they put the Dims into power-

then Dims will give them what they want...whatever it is.

Compare and contrast with the Republican'ts.

It's a grab-bag of random demands:

--College loan forgiveness
--$15 minimum wage
--Support for Palestinian peoples or something

Now they want to end racism, too?

I'm thinking none of the above are their true goal...

371 >>I don't understand why this company thinks the exact same formula that drove them into bankruptcy in 2011 is going to work better in 2015?

Often times what drives a company into bankruptcy is debt that is unserviceable. It doesn't mean the company isn't or couldn't be profitable sans debt.

If they got a good deal out of bankruptcy and got rid of most or all of the debt they might be making a tidy profit now.

It's one of the reasons I have a problem with all bankruptcy law (looking at you Donald). Nothing forces anyone to change their behavior, it just allows people or companies to walk away from debt obligations that still have to be incurred by someone.
