Overnight Open Thread (11-9-2015) - Surprise Edition

Confluence of events, sudden work-related stuff, yadda yadda yadda = hurry-up, barely-par ONT. On the other hand it is early so you have that going for you.

Quote of the Day

On Twitter Yair Rosenberg calls it "[t]hat awkward moment when you're praising the mother of terrorist who stabbed Israelis & she pulls a knife on live TV." Rosenberg adds this mordant footnote: "This is why all good TV hosts *always* ask during the pre-interview: 'are you secretly carrying any deadly weapons?'"

-- Scott Johnson

Quote of the Day

A few years ago, a Daily News report found that 70% of elaborate subway car graffiti is created by Europeans. And at the end of 2011, a 25-year-old French graffiti artist named Maxime Bezat was charged for tagging subway cars and stations in both NYC and Boston.

While Dobkin appreciates their moxie, he has some criticism for their form: "I find it kind of weird that we exported this art form to Europe, and it comes all the way back to write on our trains looking exactly the same. Why can't Germans come up with their own style of vandalism?"

Quote of the Day

Whenever some guy called Mohammed - sometimes Mohammed is his first name, sometimes it's a surname, sometimes it's both names - and the first thing that anybody does anywhere around the Western world is rush to assure us that this has nothing to do with either Islam or terrorism. So there's nothing, no reason to worry, folks - because if someone suddenly decides to come at you and he's shouting 'Allahu Akbar!', that's just Arabic for 'there's nothing to see here'... The headline in the newspaper, on ABC News' website, it struck me. It said: 'Suspect in UC Merced stabbng ID'd as 18 year old from Santa Clara.' So this is the way it's presented now. It's like 'You know, those crazy teenagers from Santa Clara... these juvenile delinquents they've got down there in the leather jackets, these Santa Clara teens, beware of them. They're crazy guys. The Santa Clara community, you don't want to go near any of them.' And we all know the reality of what is going on here...

Law Students Wrote This Unconstitutional, Ungrammatical Speech Code: 'Do Not Comment Despairingly on Others'

Yes actual law students who supposedly have studied the Constitution created a speech code for the University of Missouri so restrictive that it would be a violation of it just tweeting about how bad it is.

It is easily the worst social media policy I have ever seen. It is probably the worst social media policy you have seen. It is so bad that a University of Missouri student could get in trouble for going on Facebook and talking about how bad the policy is.

I'm afraid to actually quote directly from the policy, lest somebody send it to Kim Jong-un to give him new ideas on how to crush the freedom of his people. But the policy is so disgustingly anti-intellectual and anti-expression that it's worth the risk.

Oh and it's also your duty to narc on anyone violating the code:

It is the duty of each member of the SBA to report instances of possible non-compliance with this policy to the Vice-President of the SBA-all reports will be kept anonymous and in confidence.

The Secretary of the Army's Priority List for 2014

  1. Prevent Sexual Assault
  2. Balance and Transition the Army
  3. Champion Soldiers, Civilians and Families
  4. Bolster Army activities in the Asia-Pacific region
  5. Ensure personal accountability on and off the battlefield
  6. Tell the Army Story
  7. Implement Army Total Force policy
  8. Prudently manage reset, modernization, research and development
  9. Strengthen information assurance and cyber security
  10. Develop effective energy solutions

None of these are about winning wars. And the 2015 list is basically the same.

Hey Remember How Angela Merkel Was Outraged that the US Would Dare Spy on Its Allies....

On That Study That Proves That Religious Kids Are Less Nice Than Non-Religious Kids...

How the MSM is One Giant Hillary SuperPAC

The entertainment media plays along by making the headline as innocuous as possible: "'Fair And Balanced' News Channel Comedy Starring Kal Penn From 'Harold & Kumar' Writers In Works At ABC."

The story doesn't tell you much more.

Here is what is really going on:

Kal Penn is a former Obama White House staffer. Sure, he's made a serious splash in the world of entertainment, but he is a political animal to his core, and a cunning one.

The sitcom in question, "Fair and Balanced," is going to ridicule and attempt to further marginalize Fox News, possibly sometime next year.

If so, next year is a presidential election year.

If not, the sitcom still benefits Democrats.

If it is next year, Democrat Hillary Clinton will be running for president and every television news outlet, other than Fox News, will be doing everything in its power to elect Hillary Clinton president.

Here's where it gets especially juicy.

The sitcom is going to be developed by and air on the ABC television network.

ABC News has made former Clinton staffer, George Stephanopoulos, the face of its brand.

ABC is part of the Disney-ABC Television Group.

The Disney-ABC Television Group president is Ben Sherwood.

Ben Sherwood worked closely with Stephanopoulos for 10 years as executive producer of "Good Morning America" and later as president of ABC News.

Ben Sherwood's sister, Elizabeth Sherwood, is a Special Advisor to President Obama.

Read the rest to see just how incestuous and connected it all is.

9 Cops Who Had Secret Criminal Lives

In the late '70s, Andre Stander, a disillusioned Johannesburg police officer, started robbing banks. A master of disguise who was never recognized by witnesses, he'd rob banks (sometimes on his lunch break) then return to the scene with law enforcement to investigate the crime. He went on to become one of the most infamous bank robbers in South Africa's history.

Stander's charade had lasted for about three years before he was caught in 1980. He was sentenced to 75 years in prison. Three years into that sentence, Stander and two inmates, Patrick McCall, and Allan Heyl, managed to escape from jail, and formed the "Stander" gang. The trio robbed up to four banks a day during their short-lived crime spree.

187 Here's a doozy. My landlord has decided she will not renew our lease because we chose to try to unclog the kitchen drain BEFORE we called her to have her come and do it. WTF?

This woman is a serious scrunt.

When she offered us a the renewal in the first place, she asked for a $100 nonrefundable pet deposit. I have no idea what for. Or why it would be a deposit if she isn't going to refund it.

I'm looking into how to let folks know on Craigslist to avoid renting from this, this, this, .... woman. She has a serious reality gap.

She also left us with leaky windows that grow black mold, a broken ice maker in the fridge, etc., but she swears she is the best at having things fixed promptly. This last go round, it took her six days to get the pipes roto-rootered so we couldn't use the kitchen at all. But hey, she SAYS she is the best.

If I had a lawyer on retainer....

I will be glad to see her dump in the rear view mirror.

That is true Moron Lifestyle living right there.

I was trying to warn one local liberal cat owner about this, and she flatly refused to believe me, because she had never herself seen a 'yote in her suburban neighborhood. They ipso facto did not exist in her view.

I later on laughed and quoted an article to her from the local fishwrap about coyotes showing up among the mutts in Dolores Park, a popular dog walking spot in the deep heart of San Francisco proper.

However, I did manage to refrain from saying something along the lines of, "All right, will you believe THIS, you damn dizzy dame?"

In seriousness, it is an advantage, but the problem is that the threats they're blind to are ones that get a pass for PC reasons. Since nature is an unalloyed good to lefty lunacy, no dangerous wild animals will ever be reported. Unless a community organizer gets eaten. Likewise with Muslim immigrants. Since immigration is a positive, all negative aspects must be repressed.

That's perfectly valid. If you identify as a deity, smiting the nonbelievers is part of your culture and preventing you from doing so is the oppressive norm of the kyriarchy or some bullshit like that.

Likewise, if you identify as an Emperor, you get to make pronouncements and decrees that must absolutely be followed on pain of death. For cultural reasons. Stop oppressing me and bow!

The insanity stops when they see just how far the rabbithole goes.

Trumbo's ideology still too hot to touch, so they passed him off as a lovable loser, and concentrated on the acting art of bringing his v.annoying voice back to life.

Poor Dalton. So misunderstood. Joe Stalin just plain misled him.
And that lost him work from those darned conservatives in Hollywood.

I know I would do that because those two fuckers can't be trusted.

Don't fall for the hype. They'll claim that you'll get more by waiting till the full retirement age.

They don't mention; what if you don't live that long?

Not only that, I did the math and the totals don't start evening out for about 7 years or so. Your's may be different depending on what your points are now and when you're retirement age. Also if you can continue to work until full retirement age.

I couldn't but looking at the numbers the full retirement (because it started later) didn't net you more until after about 6-8 years of collecting the partial of 62.

Also, I reasoned that what were the odds of dying before I reached that time (not full retirement but when you started to break even) and looking at the age scales, it was a distinct possibility that I wouldn't make it. I'm coming up on the break even point but I had 4 years of drawing money when I had no prospects for a job and my UE was gone.

Do the math to see which actually works for you and gauge your possible age of death to see if you want to wait for more or not.

Well, our house is Southern Coastal Traditional, so it's a mix of modern with some pretty old, antique pieces.

I used Benjamin Moore when we moved in.

The family room, breakfast room and kitchen are "cornsilk" which is a soft yellow. The living room is red, and our bedroom is a soft green.

It's actually really pretty and soothing, considering the loud blue floral wallpaper and heavy drapes that covered this house.

I've had superb results from Behr interior paints, but their exterior product is made of pure fail.

Sherwin Williams is a better exterior paint. Way too expensive for their interior product though.

Benjamin Moore is a national brand, but not what it used to be.

The ICI / Devore lineup was always superb, but has changed ownership so many times since the '80s, I've lost track.

Olympic has consistently been the worst excuse for paint I've ever dipped brush to. Avoid.

Oh, and I get to do a full exterior paint here on the house, in the spring. Yay, me. *shudders*

Posted by: ManWithNoParty at November 10, 2015 12:02 AM (fdp9r)

Maybe it was a dealer who knew what he could get for it off his lot? I am really delighted that I missed it by such a huge margin, because it means it was never meant to be. I offered what it was worth to me, sight unseen. If the market decides otherwise, so be it. And my credit card no longer whimpers in fear. So there's that.

So today, I spent time futzing with a 1974 Vogue 26' motorhome that a nearby farmer laid on me. "Get it out of here" he said. So I drug it home on a towbar behind my Suburban yesterday, a whole 8 miles. Never had a lick of trouble towing it. I had the engine cranking over on the starter today, but it wouldn't fire up. It's a 440 Mopar on propane. The mice have had their way with the interior, and it is nasty inside. Damn shame, because it was a deluxe unit back in the day. Even has a built-in food processor on the kitchen counter! I am going to gut it out, save the useable appliances and the power train, and make it into a storage shed. It's too far gone to make it roadworthy (and livable) again, especially considering you can buy working and clean units in that category for a couple of grand, which would be just about enough to put a set of tires on this beast.

635 Trump's comments about Carson are being framed by the Media as an "attack" yet if you read exactly what he says, he's not "attacking" him. He never makes a flat statement that Carson IS lying or that he IS a liar or that he LIED. He says stuff like "well if this is true...." and phrases like that.

People are making the assumption about what he means and they may be correct. The media is framing what he says that way but we know they have an agenda.

Just parse what he says carefully.

As far as his politics before now were in the past; he's a businessman and he works/lives in a Democrat run liberal city.

He's not going to come out as a stone cold conservative even if he was. Not good business. He has said some conservative stuff before this though and he's said stuff in the past like what he's saying now. So he's not all faking just for the election.

The main thing to me is that he has a chance against Hillary and he knocks out Rubio and Bush and that's worth it right there. AFAIC.

653 Cutting Edge update:

I listened to Disc 3 tonight and it was a total hoot.

The whole CD consisted of various takes of four songs: "If You Gotta Go, Go Now", "It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry", "Sitting On A Barbed Wire Fence", and the early rehearsals of "Like A Rolling Stone".

The first song was the end of the very productive 1/15/65 session, in which the last of the album "Bringing It All Back Home" was recorded. (Most of that session was on Disc 2.) "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" didn't make the cut for the album, but it would have made a great single in the spring of 1965. However, I suspect the lyrics were considered risque at the time:

It ain't that I'm wantin'
Anything you never gave before
It's just that I'll be sleepin' soon
And it'll be too dark for you to find the door

But if you got to go
It's all right
But if you got to go, go now
Or else you gotta stay all night

The rest of the disc was the 6/15/65 session, none of which was officially released at the time. The rehearsals for "Like A Rolling Stone" were fascinating, with the musicians talking about the chord progressions and stuff. On the last run of the day, I thought I heard Bob sing, "threw the dums a bime". I paused, went back and relistened, and yes, he actually sang that. It was the end of a long, long day in the studio.

The user interface is unusable if you're left-handed or don't use WASD for any other reason. AGAIN. They did the same thing with Skyrim and had to patch it (and people had to hack the files and mod it *anyway* after their half-ass patch).

Whoever does their half-ass console ports needs to seriously reconsider that short-order cook career. It was the right way to go.

For now, I'm just glad I didn't pay full price to be a beta tester - at least I got a discount.

It's funny, I beta tested ESO and didn't have to pay for the privelege.

Bethesda needs a new motto: "You had *one* job!"

718 710 Geek question: I have to get 20Tb in data from a customer.
I can ship, drive what ever size or packaging. The data will used frequently. What are my best options?

Just build up a RAID5 box with 8x 5TB drives?

Posted by: Jean at November 10, 2015 03:34 AM (4U131)

First -- your best method for transporting the data is not necessarily the best method for using it. Second -- using it, how? Third -- will you need to give it back?

For transport, you might best use encrypted archives -- you need not use very secure encryption, because you're only ensuring that bad transport leads to utter failure and re-transmitting.

You'd want to investigate several ways to implement working storage -- is caching a thing, is RAID5 a thing? I don't see doing this part outside of Linux -- which, believe it or not, is a significant concern -- prebuilt RAID5 arrays by WD were downgraded off of NFS a while back and left with SMB access only.....which means that they're essentially Windows drives.

Finally, you have to plan for how this will go back (if ever) .

721 How about Solid State Drives? Are there externals that use USB. If they are as fast as advertised, I could use one for my Mapping projects.

731 Oh, great, it looks like the debate will be about issues and not about personalities. Yeah, right! The moderators will not even be able to be blamed this time. Idiots. Foolish, foolish idiots. We are just going to get our asses handed to us by Hillary's machine...or by some other communist. Just great!

732 cuth, if your still here (I fell asleep at the keyboard). I knew there were going to be issues. The data goes to me, I carry it home, re-use often on local network (MATLAB, etc.), never give it back.

Not going to solve this one overnight.

733 loop, its not SAR data - I have lots of that, too. But it comes in nice pulled drives because you have to get it off the airplane somehow.

So, 'assume the position' for the next debate?
As in circular firing squad?

I watched the first debate, bits of the MSNBC clusterfvck, probably just wait for blog post reports and Youtube video's of the next one while I do something productive with my time, like sleep.
