willow re-run:

New anti-gun documentary called "The Armor of Light" is being flacked as
a Disney movie, so I was all geared up to see a Disney World boycott.
Turns out it's Abigail Disney ("philanthropist") and her Fork Films
which has a long roster of Wymynz Peace flicks. She's Roy's
granddaughter.

Big Diz is kinda, sorta anti-gun, but didn't think they'd touch that one this season.

32 They banned absinthe for years because it made people insane. A few years ago they reintroduced a drink called absinthe but it doesn't have the psychoactive ingredients of what Hemingway was drinking.

Pretty much for hipsters now. When this photograph was taken it was the real deal.

so I think after the last mass shooting the MFM and government decided not to publish the name of the shooter so as not to glamorize him. Especially since he was "inspired" by other mass shooters

ok. I get that on some level

but they have still not released the name of the UC Merced stabber. and they have not said why. initially they said they were having trouble reaching the family

surely they have reached them by now. was he w foreign student? an illegal alien? a jihadi wanna be?

and what was his beef with the student in the classroom? why him?

44 Couple years back, when absinthe "came back," I looked up the psychedelia angle, having heard it from Artistes for decades. Overblown. Most tales came from one grisly murder case, where quantity seems to have been the operative factor.

Newcastle Brown was also not that strong a beer. Coal miners drank it. A lot.

Now, new absinthe has been around long enough to find a new clique of abusers, so there may be some new claims of special properties, but the old ones were pretty much Romantic fakery.

You can explain a lot of the 19th century with syphilis. It will be back, too.

Posted by: rdbrewer at November 05, 2015 09:18 AM (Iyg03)

It is a herb grown in the Northern US and Canada as well as Europe. It is used in a variety of liquors and drinks, most notably absinthe. The drug in traditional absinthe that is banned in the US and some other countries is thujone. There is no scientific basis for banning that in absinthe in small amounts. Large does can cause convulsions and death.

98 Scottish brewery BrewDog has launched what it describes as the world's first transgender beer. Called "No Label", this small batch brew will debut on November 6 to coincide with the opening of BrewDog's latest UK bar in Soho.

Brew Dog describes "No Label" as "a postmodern, postgender non-binary brew" made from "transgender hops." What are transgender hops? The company's website explains:

"Brewed with whole hop bines that have spontaneously changed from female to male, no label goes its own way. The base style, Kolsch, blurs the boundaries between lager and ale, drawing comparisons to "non-binary" individuals who class themselves as neither exclusively male nor female."

I don't like the painting very much. Degas handledthe absinthe addictiontheme immeasurably better. Of course, Degas handled just about any theme better than anyone.

The Indianapolis Art Museum is fortunate enough to have Degas' bronze ballet dancer statue--I know, he made lots of them as drawing models but this one, the one at the IMA, is the one they show in all of the art books. It's a riveting piece. You can practically feel the tension of the dancer in your own muscles and bones in a kind of sympathetic resonance. Degas is amazing.

150 " It looks like real absinthe is being sold again, after having been banned in most countries at the beginning of the 20th century "

Yep. I bought a bottle of the stuff, imported from the South of France and claiming to be the original recipe, last winter out of curiosity. It wasn't cheap - something like $65. a bottle, but I just had to try it. I had read so much about the Mauve Decade poets and writers sitting around in Paris cafes killing themselves on the stuff that I decided to spurge.

It came with a special slotted spoon - a rather fancy spoon with an Art Noveau design. It's rather fun to make the drink - you pour a shot into a little liqueur glass, place the spoon over it, put a sugar cube on the spoon and then pour cold water over it into in the glass, which dissolves the sugar cube.

If you don't like the taste of licorice, you won't like absinthe.

I had three drinks, and felt wonderful. The world was beautiful. It's a great high. It is 167 proof and I normally never drink hard liquor, only wine, beer, and cider. I had it on Friday night and it ruined my weekend. I could barely move on Saturday and still felt awful on Sunday. I don't think I've been that hungover since my college days.

I still have the bottle, and it's almost full. It's collecting dust because I'm afraid to touch the damned poison. However, I now fully understaond both how absinthe became the artistes' favorite and why they thought it inspired visions - and also why people came to believe it was deadly and banned.

That shit will fuck you up.

191 Drinking's like being a runner: you have to know your pace, know your track, and practice.

I still have a few bottles of George T. Stagg around the house which comes in at 140ish proof (depending on the year of bottling) and can drink quite a bit of it with no ill effects. If you exceed the proper dose, you're going to have a bad day, and a bad couple more.

Same with Absinthe. If you don't drink hard alcohol a lot, but start mixing a 160ish proof monster (which most absinthe is in the ballpark of) with sugar, it's going to cripple you.

So, moral of the story, read your labels and plan your drinking accordingly.

197 124 So here's a cultural divide anecdote. Morning Joe was going crazy today because Ben Carson believes that Joseph built the pyramids for grain storage.

Eugene Robinson said "no one else in the world believes that". Scarborough, a Southern Baptist, didn't correct him. I thought it sounded all of the crazypants.

So I told that to this girl I talk to all the time about these things. She was raised evangelical.

She said "I was taught that".

Posted by: Bandersnatch at November 05, 2015 09:46 AM (JtwS4)

201 162 I've never heard about the pyramids being granaries thing before, ever. Joseph had a vision of famine and helped Pharaoh prepare for it per the Old Testament, but I've never encountered the idea that Joseph had the pyramids built to store grain.
Posted by: Insomniac at November 05, 2015 09:59 AM (2Ojst)

I was brought up evangelical and am now Catholic and never heard that one. However, I'm think the Morning Joe crew made a bigger deal out of it than it is.

1. Who cares? I mean really? How does this affect us right now? It doesn't and it's stupid for them to dwell on it.

2. I've actually done a little reading on ancient Egyptian history and archeology and my impression is that they (the experts) really don't know a whole hell of a lot about it. I mean, there's been a lot of discoveries, but a very large amount of what we think of as "settled" history for that culture isn't all that settled in the community. I think we just kind of take it for granted that the "experts" "know" all this stuff when they kind of don't. Hell, they don't even have a decent timeline. There is one that is "generally accepted" but even then it's acknowledge to have huge problems. It's a weird subject, honestly.

279 IIRC, Jon Meacham, former Newsweek editor, was (is?) a Morning Joe regular who admitted any Dem in a presidential get ~15% boost because of the media. Total arrogant, smug Lefty. He may have been in charge of Newsweek when they did that Newsweek international cover with the Koran in the trashcan that inflamed the usual suspects (domestic cover was different).

Not a good choice in biographer for a Republican, I would think.

Well, pick a weekend when you don't have anything important planned.

And make sure you have the nice glass. I rummaged around for a while to find a pretty glass because it dawned on me that placing the fancy spoon over my everyday juice glass kinda killed the whole effect. You also have to pour the water slowly, slowly, since the dissolving sugar cube makes the mix gradually turn cloudy. If you're gonna murder the weekend, you want to do it the right way.

Of course, you might be much better at tolerating hard liquor than I am. Any time I drink it, it hits me very hard.

The problem with both of those movies is Tarantino is starting to pander to the audience. Think of the good guys and bad guys in Pulp Fiction. Not so clear at times. They were complex characters. Now some of his characters and plot moves depend on that "this person is X, and we all know what that means, don't we?"

If he could get back to complex/ambiguous (more real) characters his movies would be better.

284 Absolutely. Hemingway fetishized the way you pour it over the sugar in the spoon and how the water reacts to it.

Ernest Hemingway was an asshole at every level. I just finished reading 1920's heavyweight champion Gene Tunney's biography, 'Arms for Living'. Tunney was acquainted with Hemingway. One day Hemingway asked if he could spar with the champ, and Tunney said sure. Celebrities often approached him with this request, usually as a photo op,and Tunney didn't see the harm in it.

Hemingway, who it has been notedwas an asshole, made a serious attempt to knock Tunney out while sparring. One momentit was friendly horseplay, the next moment Hemingway's going for aleft hook to the chin. Tunney rolled with the shot out of instinct, pushed Hemingway back with his left, and threw a right cross, stoppinghis fistabout a half-inch away from Hemingway's face. 'Never do that again,' Tunney told him. Hemingway just nodded.

Tunney figured Hemingway wanted bragging rights, wanted to say that he had knocked out a world heavyweightchampion. As it was, Tunney felt both men had been lucky. IfTunney hadn't caught himself in time, Hemingway could've been killed, his face caved in. It was that close.

Comes down to it, I can listen to classical and watch the frigging stars--the ones in the sky--and find more worthwhile things to do with my time.

If he had tried to spar with Dempsey, Dempsey might have actually killed him.

Dempsey was an interesting dude. He could be sensitive and kind out of the ring, particularly toward his family - he was deeply devastated when his brother died - but when he started boxing, it's like he turned killer robot.

Once one of silent screen slut Clara Bow's many lovers came over to her place and suspected that she had been entertaining another man. The boyfriend knocked on her bathroom door and yelled "Come out here and fight, you SOB!" The door opened and Jack Dempsey was standing there.

Presumably the boyfriend then told Jack and Clara to enjoy themselves and apologized for the interruption.

Jack Dempsey once sparred with silent film star Rudolph Valentino as a press stunt. The champ expected Valentino to be the "pink powder puff" of his movies, but was surprised when the actor proved to be able to hold his own. It was in no sense a real challenge for Dempsey, but he later privately admitted that Valentino could throw "a real he-man punch."

Ernest Hemingway did ask Jack Dempsey to 'spar' with himwhen they were both in Paris, when Dempsey was still champ. Dempsey refused him--not only refused him but laughed at him. Hemingway couldn't forgive that. He hated Dempsey with the heat of a thousand suns.

Imagine Ernest Hemingway, who styled himself a Man Among Men, being scorned by another man in that context. According to Dempsey, Hemingway held that grudge for decades. He never let it go.

Not sure about the friend being the 'genius' thing-

he wrote/directed a movie called "Killing Zoe" (I think)
that sucked the wax tadpole.

Tarantino's great insight was to realize that-

Star Wars was a B space movie elevated to Hollywood Standards.

The Exorcist was a B horror movie elevated to Hollywood Standards.

Alien was a C space horror movie elevated to Hollywood Standards.

His whole oeuvre is writing/stealing Italian, Japanese, and drive-in movie plots/scene and elevating them to Hollywood Standards.

Whatever you think of his movies-

it was a smart idea.

Remember Carson's interview with the 'ladies' of The View? One of them was offering to teach him science. His gracious reply was that we do not know G-d's timetable -- with his sleepy look that signals stupid stuff and he is trying to be kind.

Amazed at the constant religious attacks on anyone running (on the R side, obviously). My kids were astonished that I support Cruz because he is a 'religious nut'. Makes the attacks on Kennedy for his Catholicism look tame.

Actually, I wonder more about the blacks, since Islam is growing in popularity among the black prison population and even many black Christians are reluctant to criticize black Muslims like Farrakhan. I think the mores and grievance culture of the black underclass make them much more susceptible to Islam than I think the Hispanics are. If Mexican Catholics change religion it seems to be because they have become evangelicals.

Also, there is no love lost between the black and Hispanic communities so I think the fact that Islam is attracting more blacks might actually be a turnoff for Hispanics.

(BTW, the black Muslims will be surprised when they find out how Arabs actually view blacks and what both Sunnis and Shiites think of a version of Islam which teaches that whites were created by a mad scientist. I'm sure ISIS would not be all cool with Kwaanza celebrations either.)

525 And, btw, this is *why* the libs are freaking out about Carson:

Tonight, going through all of your questions, I wanted to touch on a few issues that seem to be asked by many people.

I would like to deal with one question tonight in some detail. The issue is experience. Several people ask what they should tell their friends when people say " like Carson but he has no political experience".

You are absolutely right - I have no political experience. The current Members of Congress have a combined 8,700 years of political experience. Are we sure political experience is what we need. Every signer of the Declaration of Independence had no elected office experience. What they had was a deep belief that freedom is a gift from God. They had a determination to rise up against a tyrannical King. They were willing to risk all they had, even their lives, to be free. Today we find ourselves with an entire class of politicians. No one in Philadelphia, during that summer our nation was born, dreamed that service was a career with a pension. America was the land of the Citizen Statesmen. They were merchants, lawyers, farmers - and yes, even doctors. They were willing to stand for freedom. Today, the political class stands in the way, not for the people. They demand pensions and perks. This is not what our Founders envisioned for America. I spent my life treating very ill children. Over 15,000 times I gave my all to prolong their lives. I was blessed to do it. But when it came time for me to retire, I simply could not sit back any longer. These children became my family. What our government is doing to them is outrageous. I am prepared to risk all that I have to try and make a difference in their future. I built one of the nation's best medical centers. I served for two decades on the boards of Costco and Kellogg. I built a national scholarship program.

My experience is very different than what we have come to expect. I grew up poor. I know what it is like to be homeless and hungry. I know the pain of poverty. I also know that education and a mother's love can be the path out of dire poverty. I know what it is like to see water fountains you are not allowed to drink out of because of your skin color. I also know that once you peel back the skin, the brain is the same no matter what your skin color or continent you live on. I know that victimhood is a trap. I know that it is our Christian responsibility to offer those less fortunate a hand up. I know my faith is strong and my ego is small.

I know that my path to the White House is different than most. But I also know I bring all of the pain and joy, the success and failure, the lessons learned through love and sorrow in my life's journey. Bill Clinton was famous for saying "I feel your pain" - well, I have walked in your shoes.

I do not have political experience, I have a life journey. A journey that not only made it possible for me to relate to so many different people, but also one where time and time again I was told I would fail, only to succeed. My candidacy is different, that I grant you. I have neither Donald Trump's money or Jeb Bush's political network. However, I wouldn't trade a single child I treated for all of Trump's money. While I admire the Bush family's dedication to service, I too served -nights, weekends, holidays, birthdays and anniversaries with severely injured patients were my public service.

I didn't go to embassy cocktail parties or beg lobbyists for money. I spent night after night in a quiet, sterile room trying to save the life of a small child. That was my life's service. This is my life's experience. What I have is a lifetime of caring, integrity and honesty. I have experienced the American Dream. No where in the world, other than America, could a man whose ancestors were slaves, rise to become a leading brain surgeon and one day seek the Office of President.

The very fact that I am running is testament to the greatness of America. If all you want is political experience then I cannot be your candidate.

Thank you for staying up with me.

Goodnight,
Ben

Someone was questioning yesterday if the Hispanics would side with us if
it came down to a fight with the Muzzies. Actually, I wonder more
about the blacks, since Islam is growing in popularity among the black
prison population and even many black Christians are reluctant to
criticize black Muslims like Farrakhan. I think the mores and grievance
culture of the black underclass make them much more susceptible to
Islam than I think the Hispanics are. If Mexican Catholics change
religion it seems to be because they have become evangelicals.

Also, there is no love lost between the black and Hispanic
communities so I think the fact that Islam is attracting more blacks
might actually be a turnoff for Hispanics.

(BTW, the black Muslims will be surprised when they find out how
Arabs actually view blacks and what both Sunnis and Shiites think of a
version of Islam which teaches that whites were created by a mad
scientist. I'm sure ISIS would not be all cool with Kwaanza
celebrations either.)

556 from Ebony magazine last January, 2015

Representatives at the forefront of the movements for Black lives and racial justice have taken a historic trip to Palestine this week to connect with activists living under Israeli occupation.

Black journalists, artists and organizers representing Ferguson, Black Lives Matter, Black Youth Project 100, and more have joined the Dream Defenders for a 10-day trip to the occupied Palestinian Territories and Israel.

The trip comes after a year of highly-publicized repression in Ferguson, the Gaza Strip, and West Bank including East Jerusalem, as well as solidarity between these places.

Ahmad Abuznaid, Dream Defenders legal and policy director and a co-organizer of the delegation,
said that the goal of the trip was to make connections.

The goals were primarily to allow for the group members to experience and see first hand the
occupation, ethnic cleansing and brutality Israel has levied against Palestinians, but also to build real relationships with those on the ground leading the fight for liberation, wrote Abuznaid. In the spirit of Malcolm X, Angela Davis, Stokely Carmichael and
many others, we thought the connections between the African American leadership of the movement in
the US and those on the ground in Palestine needed
to be reestablished and fortified.

Abuznaid said the trip represented a chance to bring the power of Black organizing to Palestine

565 >>> 2. I've actually done a little reading on ancient Egyptian history and archeology and my impression is that they (the experts) really don't know a whole hell of a lot about it. I mean, there's been a lot of discoveries, but a very large amount of what we think of as "settled" history for that culture isn't all that settled in the community.

I was taught in school that King Tut was most likely killed when he was young because of his dad's crazy religious heresies and because someone was power grabbing. Well there are new theories that actually no,
he had already returned to the traditional religion before his death, has changed his name to tutankhamun, indicating he worshipped Amun again not Aten like his papa, so no need for coup. And new scans of his body show the skull fragments in his brain they thought indicated murder were actually done by Carter's team on accident when removing the body. Most likely the wounds on his body were from a chariot accident.

But science is settled forevah!

579 Tarantino has started believing his own press, which is never good for a creative personality. Instead of fun movies based on what he enjoyed when he grew up, he's slouched into making a series of identity group revenge flicks (expect a lesbian one, and a transexual one, and a handicapped one, and...). Its not very interesting or entertaining films. The man has always needed an editor, but as he became more successful and moneymaking, he was able to reject editing and the films got more and more boring.

A few minutes of guys talking about random stuff in an interesting manner: tolerable. Half an hour of people sitting around talking: not so much.

Anyway, children are such an integral part of life and family that to exclude them from anything for any reason is inconceivable. You take them everywhere and enjoy their company, dance and sing with them, tell them jokes and stuff like that there.

Nothing like how I'd been raised. I knew there were normal people somewhere, I just had to find them. And I did.

Right? Looks like he should have been hanging out with Clooney in the ER days.

And I agree he's still a very attractive man. I'd say easily the best looking of the entire field. Although that's not saying much with Bernie and Hilldawg in the race.

Bonus: one county in Oregon voted on a measure to make any federal gun control laws null and void. It doesn't mean much legally speakigng, but it's a nice fuck you to Obama nonetheless.

I think Jeb is probably a good man but his brother - also basically a good man - proved too loyal to failed underlings, and too dependent on Democrats funding his war to ever press an effective domestic agenda on them, and the end result is that no one really wants a Bush now.

It's rather like Churchill and his coalition with the Attlees and Crippses during WWII, they went along with Churchill so they could have NHS and Ground Nuts and the whole welfare state when it was all over.

The difference was that WWII was a war of necessity for the British* while Iraq was a war of convenience for us.

* - we could engage in a little revisionist history over Britain making peace with Gemany in 1940, whether Germany would be a world power or whether in the end Stalin would have just taken the whole damn continent, etc.

I believe the "Mr" usage is common among Brit physicians, not out of pretension but custom, as they do not enjoy the exalted status of physicians in the U.S. (Neither do engineers, for that matter.)
Faculty members in the sciences never make a big deal out of the "Dr." business; it'd be considered weird.

Recently minted science Ph.D.s. will invariably (jokingly, with mock seriousness) refer to each other as "Dr. X" for about the first ten minutes, after which, nada.

One and only one ATF agent spoke out - otherwise we wouldn't have known a thing about either Fast and Furious or Gang Walker. Kind of makes you wonder what other programs are going on in the background without any whistle blowers.

Oh and Senator Cornyn 700,000,000 million rounds of ammo would have supplied the 1st Infantry division at full World War II combat firing rate for 200 years - but the government needs that many rounds of 9 mm hollow point ammo for target practice?

Fortunately Obama is not going to seize our guns, he said so.

I'd be surprised if he doesn't close Gitmo and give it to Cuba -- right before leaving office, so that someone else has to clean up the mess.

My Father was a Doctor also and used the Mr except in professional situations. Never thought about it much growing up. Then I got a part time job as a cashier and started noticing how many people put their titles on their checks like it made it more likely the things wouldn't bounce or I was supposed to be impressed.

I really want to read that Theda Bara book, some day. It sounds so interesting.

Christopher, if you click on my nic, it will take you to my website, where you can read little bits of The Director's Cut and a teaser for the still-in-the-making-after-god-knows-it's-been-too-long sequel, The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of.

And don't you have a book, too, or am I imagining things?

787 I've never had it but I've heard it makes you wickedly and sometimes poisonously drunk.

Its just booze with a bad reputation. Absinthe was becoming very popular in France and the wine industry freaked out, watching their market share descend. So they started spreading rumors about how it caused hallucinations, death, etc. They were so successful that for a long time it was illegal all over the world.

In the sciences? The real ones, I mean? The only person I've ever heard of who did that was Dr. Amy Bishop. Anyone else who was ever tempted to do that would realize that he'd be mercilessly mocked.

Now in the social sciences, could well be another story, since they tend to have scientific penis envy anyway.

Another fun fact: you can't teach at Harvard without a Harvard degree, so they automatically confer an M.A. on every faculty member who didn't get his degree there (or at least used to).
