A major Syrian rebel group is using dozens of captives in metal cages as human shields in the largest opposition stronghold on the outskirts of Damascus, a monitor said Sunday.
Jaish al-Islam, regarded as the most powerful rebel group near the capital, has put regime soldiers and Alawite civilians it was holding in metal cages, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told AFP. The group then placed these cages in public squares in the Eastern Ghouta region in an attempt to prevent regime bombardment , Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said. Weasel Zippers Ah just a point of information for that Rebel Group: The russians don't give a rat's ass who they bomb. Posted by: Nevergiveup at November 02, 2015 09:18 AM (gf8BH) 19

From the sidebar about homework, too much of homework is just busy work. It drove my daughter nuts because it was simply time wasting drudgery. After 7-8 hours at school, you shouldn't have 3-4 hours of homework. That's part of what leads to kids never getting part time jobs.
Took calc my senior year in high school. Small class and almost never had homework because the teach taught the lesson about half the class and then we worked on it the rest of the class. It obviously was good enough to get me through college calc. Posted by: WOPR at November 02, 2015 09:33 AM (LTDSy) 67

Can't use any semi-automatic handgun for hunting but you can carry one. But not if you don't have carry license. PA doesn't allow semi autos for most hunting. Only manual operated weapons, bolt or revolver. And you can't hunt with a pellet gun. No matter how powerful. I bought a pellet gun before I knew that. Was going to thin the squirrel herd a bit. But no. I can trap them and take them 450' from any dwelling and THEN shoot them with a revolver (if I have a fur taker license) but no pellet gun. 83 Btw I got jury summons. Fun.
Mornin' Votermom! I had the pleasure of being on call for the month of October and had to go only once. My area's circuit court is not very busy. They called in 49 people to select a jury of 7 from. Plaintiff's attorney didn't want any friends of the po-po since she was suing one. Answering one question honestly got me scratched off fast. After 30 minutes or so of questioning us they chose from the first 10 people. Posted by: OldDominionMom at November 02, 2015 10:00 AM (GzDYP) 130
I've got a .177 Crossman air pistol, had to shoot a rat a year or two ago. Eighty bucks to kill one rat. But I also carry it with me when the coyotes are roaming the horse pasture, we've had issues in the past. I don't know what damage it would do to a coyote, but it would probably hurt like hell with the sharp hunting rounds.

That slogan has actually been around for a while, and although I'm always ready to blame things on Obama, that sloganeering seems to have percolated up from the Pentagon marketing department (they have one) because the focus groups with potential recruits showed the recruits liked it. You see, special snowflakes like the whole idea of cool jets and helicopters and ships, and spiffy uniforms. The bit about actually fighting and killing and being killed? Eh, not so much. That's why the whole recruiting pitch abruptly changed to emphasisze humanitarian relief over warfare. Unfortunately for the snowflakes who did enlist, the whole trend is toward more warfare, not less. And the services are increasingly unready for that. Keep your kids OUT of the recruiting offices. Bad bad decision at this time. Posted by: torquewrench at November 02, 2015 10:23 AM (noWW6) 178

Then when my friend and I were riffing about Teh Fred you clowns started in with the jokes and he said go look and it's been all downhill since then. The reason I bought into Teh Fred was the sense that he was one of us. He responded online somewhere to something Ramesh Ponuru had written earlier that day. Late Morning, Glories!
Just been going through the earlier post with its amusing day-late DST-adjusting time-shuffle of comments. How izzit that this blog, the best on the web (including all the community of canny commenters), is the worst piece of technical junk?* I'm no genius, but couldn't the time-stamps all be Universal Time and then only the display times would be adjusted, all together, for DST or whatever? No re-sequencing of comments? I can't even imagine how it actually is done. Main pages and comments aren't even the same clock! It's not just DST comment shuffles and the lameness of commenter tech (e.g. no live links) - much of which I can understand in the name of avoiding abuse. With high traffic, posting pix and vids would make any page overloaded. (Not that kbdabear's compliance pix on the ONTs wouldn't brighten it up... ahem.) And not long after I started visiting, people had found ways to post words outside the gray boxes & other silly stuff, and those were alleged friends of the blog. Imagine what the enemies could do! Some of the "problem" comes from maintaining something most of us appreciate & respect, no sign-up required to comment, plus the ability to post anonymously and play with our socks. This means trolls switching IPs can be difficult to suppress, and if it's a choice between signed-up members allowed to post pix and playing with socks, I think the PTB have made the right choices. But it's also little things most folks might not notice, like, if you jump to comments from an article (not the front page) or from the archives, you go to the old minx:1080 address (which IIRC was a fix for a server crash early last year) instead of the acecomments domain. Or, there's no links to previous/next article anywhere on the comments pages. And probably other things I'm not recalling at the moment. Oh, yeah, the 500 errors on any Unicode. (bit.ly/pixyize) *Just a rant, posed as academic questions, and with all due respecks to the obviously overworked Pixy and the Hamsters. I have a question for the science types. ( NOTE: I do believe in evolution but that we only understand a
tiny part of a percentage of the whole process which is being presented as settled science to the public and shut up haters to anybody that raises any doubts whatsoever) Academia and media have insisted that we learn about evolution since understanding it is central to understanding the world around us, so we are told. (This is demonstrably BS as it would be far more helpful to understand basic economics but no such push is made. Very few people need to know much about evolution in their daily lives. The push is made because it is thought that believing in evolution makes belief in a God impossible, also false but that is what the sciency atheists think). So to get kids hooked on evolution there is always talk about dinosaurs because that is the coolest thing ever to most kids. In particular how, when and why, they went instinct is all presented as know fact. But then, in other programs/books, we learn that birds evolved from dinosaurs. And some facts are brought up to show how, when and why this happened. OK, so did the dinosaurs go extinct when the meteor hit or did some evolve into birds? And just how did a raptor, with no source of food, since the meteor, survive in large enough numbers to start evolving into a bird, a process that would take millions of years and require huge numbers of a population to allow the genetic variations to proceed. Has anybody ever though about the contradiction here? I think this would be a good question for Neil DeGrass Tyson, known expert in all things sciency Posted by: George Orwell de Leon at November 02, 2015 10:43 AM (1BQGO) Posted by: Fred Merch at November 02, 2015 10:45 AM (E5UB0) 209

That is what I was thinking but that really isn't how it is presented. I have seen programs on "reverse engineering" a birds genetics to take it back in time and you always end up with some raptor like creature, never a lizard. And the dinosaurs that were already developing feathers were large from what I have ready. Their food source would have been destroyed. It just seems to me that the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs wouldn't have left enough of a population of any meat eater to evolve into a bird, or anything else. It would have to have been an herbivore. Posted by: George Orwell de Leon at November 02, 2015 11:02 AM (1BQGO) 244

Consider a rural county that has 10 square miles, 100 cows, and 10 people. You know how many votes they have? The answer is 10.
Then there's a city that has 10 square miles, no cows, and 100,000 people. You know how many votes they have? 100,000. It's not a conspiracy. More people live in cities than live in rural areas. You know what that is called? Democracy. And that is why direct democracy is undesirable. People get offended that WW2-era Army field manuals said that, but it's true. The US is very deliberately not a democracy for that reason, although the Democrat Party wishes to make it so. Posted by: Ian S. at November 02, 2015 11:17 AM (S+N7W) 275

That was Navy. In the Gulf of Tonkin on SAAR duty (Sea and Air Rescue). We had to be on station during the day for pilot recovery and patrol. Then during the nightime we'd sail south to where the carriers and oilers and supply ships were to get resupplied. So up at 3 a.m. to unrep (underway replenishment something we lead the world in) for supplies and fuel. then back north to patrol. Normal work day was 6 a.m. reveille 7 a.m. cleaning stations chow 8 a.m. muster and to work stations 4 a.m. off duty During the 24 hours of the day at condition III you stand 8 hours of watch 4 on 8 off. During the day if not on watch you were at a work station. At night if not on watch you would get called out for unrep at 3 a.m. for about 2 hours whatever the weather. Wouldn't have been so bad if we actually were in a shooting war but we had to stand war watches with nothing to do and no expectation of being attacked. (disregard the Turner Joy/Maddox Tonkin Gulf Incident as normal) Lot's of guys fell asleep on watch. Morale deteriorated and effectiveness and readiness was zilch. 4 and 8 with an 8 hour work day was normal in the conventional Navy. If you had the misfortune to have the 4 - 8 watch your day began at 3:30 am and ended at 19:30 pm. I had that on the Saratoga and it sucked a big one. On the Enterprise we worked a 6 on 12 off rotation and you were expect to do the routine work while on watch. It was a LOT better.
And BTW the mess deck was only serving during those times you were on watch so if you wanted to eat you were stuck with mid-rats so you had to get up during your short sleep time to eat a really crappy mid-rats meal. Posted by: Vic-we have no party at November 02, 2015 11:32 AM (t2KH5) 319

Posted by: q at November 02, 2015 11:20 AM (mf5tZ) That's because our politicians and writers are not that smart. Our people pound on lowering taxes and smaller government when they should be focused on education and Social Security. The right could own the education issue and private retirement accounts as a civil rights issue, using it to show democrats want to keep blacks down and return to slavery, but they shy away from the issues. As I try to mention often, the people we elect are not geniuses. There have been Kennedys that have been elected with sub-100 IQs. I know of some on our side that wish they were that high. Our writers mistake organizing paragraphs with intellectual thinking. Instead of finding people who can use original creative ideas to get our message across, we have a stable of insufferable twits collating and recycling what liberals believe conservative ideas are. Hopefully, as the establishment right fades in the distance, the honestly conservative will rise up and establish the narrative for the future. In my little noticed self published book available world wide I often make the point 'control the food, control the animal', because, you see, the urban areas are wholly dependent on imported food and don't care where the food comes from as long as they have it to eat.
The democrat politicians understand this. Food, vie EBT cards is a chain around your neck, as is a place to sleep, and protection from your enemies. You become property of the state, and you then serve the state if you want to eat. Which is why Obama's war on cops is such going to be a problem one day. A message that would resonate with urban dwellers would be one of Free Shit for all. And we've seen how well that works out and the Republicans NEVER get credit for it so all it does is piss off the people paying the for it. Where have you ever heard a conservative say something like that? Or is it just the voices in your head? And I would bet that there's MORE people living in the country than live in the major urban centers. Your angry attitude is a bit much. Perhaps you should take that message someplace where it would fit better? And thanks for the concern about the conservative message not being crafted for urban dwellers (dog whistle). You'll never hear one of the mainstream conservatives ever recite a real conservative message. The Media won't let that happen. I never saw anybody do that. It would only work when in port and usually most people have other things they want to do.
Out at sea, if anything was fast enough to catch the bait you were trolling, it would be too big for you to land. And nasty most likely. Give you an example; Ship was 560' long. I saw either a whale shark or a great white that was longer than our whale boat (about 30') pass along side us while we were idling along. Just below the surface, don't know how deep. Maybe 6' or so. We do need to craft our conservative message to the liberal city and suburban dwellers.
At the end of conservative speech on education, I want rich liberals in tears, ready to dedicate the balance of their lives to apologizing, person by person, to inner-city youths for dooming them to a life of poverty. After the same speech, I want adult blacks to be both ashamed and mad that they've been tricked for decades and their children will suffer for the rest of their lives because of their blind trust in democrats. After a conservative speech I want blacks ready to riot over their paying into Social Security for years but not getting their fair share because they die earlier than white women. I want them to believe the only reason blacks are worse financial shape than whites is that all the money they pay into SS goes to the government and isn't inherited by their families. Make the democrats villains and blacks the victims. Posted by: jwest at November 02, 2015 11:50 AM (Zs4uk) 370

Build a message around employing the middle class, making sure opportunity for the least capable isn't absorbed first by immigrants, and reducing the impact of government regulation and intrusion into public schools.
End union dominance of public schools. Allow parents to decide where their school tax dollars go, via vouchers. Disband the VA, and give veterans previously "served" in the VA facilities vouchers to be spent wherever they find the best care. Go to Hopkins, or Mayo or the Cleveland Clinic. Why should vets die by socialism, when the best care in the world is only a voucher away? End the Education Department intrusion into local schools lunches, curriculum and testing. In fact, end the Education Department. Tax cuts for the middle class, tax increases for the crony capitalists. When I used to ride on the east coast (in a city btw) I rode on the sidewalks. I didn't like to but I had to as the cars were driven by crazy people. They had no concern what so ever about crowding me off the road. And if you're in the road and traffic behind you and someone flings open their door into your path from a parked car, where you gonna go. I went on the sidewalks because there was less traffic. I tried to be polite and would go slow when coming up on people or groups but I'm not gonna risk getting killed just because a few pedestrians are upset. And bike lanes don't do shit because double parkers screw you up and cars will crowd you anyway. It all depends on enforcement. Unless you travel downtown on the sidewalks, the cops won't try to stop you cause they're in traffic and you're gone before they can do anything. Now some bikers will act like they're entitled to be there. I never did that. No zipping along in top gear and scaring little old ladies and stuff. But I can understand how folks could get upset. there's just two sides to that story. Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at November 02, 2015 12:10 PM (Xo1Rt) 425

But, first...if I ended up President: Obama federalized student loans, so I see no reason institutions that use race as an admissions or hiriing criterion should be eligible to receive student loan or grant funds or any sort of Federal research funding. Similarly, Federal education, law enforcement, highway, and Medicaid funding would be contingent on enforcing voter ID, voter roll cleanup, immigration enforcement, eminent domain reform, and some anti-driving-nuisance policies such as eliminating photo radar, permitting radar detectors (hi, VA/DC!), and ensuring that HOV lanes do not steal road capacity from other users. You take the king's shilling you do the king's bidding. Oh, and at the Federal level - no Federal agency may spend $0.01 on any copyright enforcement action, or support for any private copyright enforcement action, for any work more than fifty years old unless and until Congress produces a bill returning the current forever-and-ten-years-after IP regime to the Constitutionally-provided 'reasonable period'. A man owned a small ranch near Great Falls, Montana. The Montana Labor Department got a tip that he was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an investigator out to interview him.
"I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them," demanded the investigator. "Well," replied the rancher, "there's my ranch hand who's been with me for 3 years. I pay him $1200 a week plus free room and board." "The cook has been here for 18 months, and I pay her $1000 per week plus free room and board." "Then there's the half-wit. He works about 18 hours every day, with no days off, and does about 90% of all the work around here. He makes about $10 per week and pays his own room and board." "But, I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night, and he also sleeps with my wife occasionally." "That's the guy I want to talk to... the half-wit," says the investigator. Most bike lanes are just a line painted on the road not actual separate paths. So you still wind up competing with 2 tons of metal for space.
One thing I wouldn't do is cross willy nilly through a light. THOSE guys used to piss me off in a car or on a bike. They just don't realize what the impact of a car at 20 mph can do. Sometimes I'd walk the bike through an intersection just so it was clear that I was a pedestrian. Being a driver made me a bit better biker but so many others can be so selfish and entitled it makes you want to spit. Do unto others. Before they do unto you. And I don't mean that in a bad way. "Disband the VA, and give veterans previously 'served' in the VA
facilities vouchers to be spent wherever they find the best care. Go to Hopkins, or Mayo or the Cleveland Clinic. Why should vets die by socialism, when the best care in the world is only a voucher away?" Trump is out with a VA reform plan which is a bit incoherent. It combines care-anywhere vouchers with a promise to fire the incompetents at the VA proper. Just two problems with that. First off, the majority of vets who get handed care-anywhere vouchers are NEVER EVER going to go anywhere near the filthy, ineptly run VA facilities for the rest of their lives. They'll flee to the far better care available elsewhere. So we'd be paying to maintain a little used VA on top of paying for the vouchers. Second, Trump seems to think firing Fedzilla personnel is easy. No way, Ray. This goes double and triple for Fedzilla personnel in protected classes. It just seems to me that the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs wouldn't have left enough of a population of any meat eater to evolve into a bird, or anything else.
