I like having light to wake me up but I have flexible hours and would deal. I know a lot of folks with set work hours would like more light later in their days and a lot of people just hate the switching back and forth.

Don't use ANFO or Cheddite. Not that I think you would, but the whole point is to NOT go up like a cellar stuffed with powder and iron bars.
Road flares? They can be chopped up nicely and put into old nylons or socks, and you might want to experiment to make sure they ignite. You might get those life-boat matches as initiators if the stuffing going up won't ignite it easily.

Then whenever I see a clock elsewhere, I automatically added an hour and if in doubt or mission critical I checked my computer or the designated "real" time.
After 66 years of that bullshit, I finally said "why?" I'm not stupid, I can remember what time of the year it is and add an hour or not.
Anybody that plays this game they've got going is just getting their head messed up for no useful purpose.

Apparently the federal government has voided using a NM DL as ID ( to purchase firearms etc.) due to the fact so many were issued to illegals.
Passports are no good because they only establish citizenship and don't have your address on them. Although that didn't stop people from overwhelming the Post Offices in NM with passport applications to the point that as of today NM Post Offices are no longer accepting passport applications.
Giving illegals DL's, who thought that wouldn't end up in a FUBAR clusterfuck ?

We did it, made it through this year: The mantle clock, the microwave, the cars, the coffeemaker - didn't reset them. (Last year, it was just my truck.) Simple enough to look at the cell or computers or anybody else's clock for DSTime.
Also amusing when people were at our house, had to leave by some time, and didn't remember our... quirkiness.

So the idea caught on her. Save electricity by moving the awake time more in natural light times.
But I think the actual data showed that electricity consumption actually *increased* under DST in the summer, rather than decreasing.
Lighting is a very small fraction of the total consumption, I think, and the other sources increase with the clock change.
Anyway, there is no empirical basis for it in modern society, no matter what the Nazis did.

My newf helped pass out the candy. He stuck his head out to inspect all the costumes, and we had kids coming into the house to pet him, and see just how big he was. They actually forgot about the candy, and we had to remind them to take some.
My favorite was when he snuffled the belly of a baby, who giggled and laughed, and grabbed his head. He, of course, just stood there. The baby's mom asked where she could get one.

Sounded not too bad, no knocks, but it's very low on compression, probably still some stuck rings. But it was cool to hear it bark, and see it make smoke again.

Good Halloween this year, we had, I think,65 kids with some neat costumes and the majority were the old standbys.
Dog went nuts, she lives for 2 things, hunting ducks and playing with kids. All I do is provide food.

My newf helped pass out the candy. He stuck his head out to inspect all the costumes, and we had kids coming into the house to pet him, and see just how big he was. They actually forgot about the candy, and we had to remind them to take some.
My favorite was when he snuffled the belly of a baby, who giggled and laughed, and grabbed his head. He, of course, just stood there. The baby's mom asked where she could get one.

The Gulag Archipelago guy. He wrote a shorter book called A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, about a prisoner in a Soviet labor camp, which is where I lifted that gem.
He is not considered a classical writer, he is an epic modern writer, but nowhere as light hearted as Tolstoy or Dosteyevski - and I admit to never actually reading anything more than excerpts from those two authors.

I wonder if Georgette Heyer is why I don't like Northanger Abbey as much as I used to. Heyer is a lot kinder to her characters than Austen was with hers and, as a supporting character in other's dramas myself, I find that I appreciate that trait.

Ours is afraid of the water. He rescues "preemptively". When we lived in florida, and had a pool, if my daughter tried to jump in, he would run up, grab her arm or clothes, and drag her to the grass. If she got up and tried to go back in the water, he sat on her. He does the same with snow. If she tries to walk in the snow in the yard, he grabs her jacket and drags her back to the door. Because it's frozen water.

Thorpe was poisonous but I remember thinking what a jerk he was being last time I read it. And of course his dad was awful, but he was supposed to be. Maybe I need to read it again and see why I was thinking that. May have been more a reflection of where I was at emotionally after John's death than the book itself.

This is why I now spring for premium snooty chocolate items that are not in Halloween-specific wrapping.
It's not because I'm trying to pull status-symbol rank on neighborhood parents. And it's not because of the little kids, who can't tell the difference: to them, candy is candy.
It's because if not all the high end chocolate moves on Halloween, it'll get happily snarfed up by friends and family over the following holiday gatherings and parties. Just set out the dish without comment on the sideboard.

In the Gulag Archipelago he wrote about his life and the prison culture, as well as the establishment of the prisons and camps in the wake of the October Revolution and how they developed. He also talked about several strikes and revolts that happened in the camps. It is a three volume set.
He also wrote about Soviet Union history under Marxism.
I read it in high school and it affected me deeply. He received some sort of award for his work, and gave a number of speeches stating basically, "You Americans do not understand what you are fighting against."
I also had a co-worker tell me that he thought Solzhenitsyn whined a lot, but then I figure a tenner in the camps and being sentenced to life internal exile and being diagnosed and treated for cancer in a Soviet prison hospital may give basis for hard feelings and a basis for renouncing Marxism.

That's why I quit bothering.
Since the theif next door took off in the middle of the night, his adorable kids can't come get spolied. And the asshole across the street with the blower 4x per day? His wife left him & took the kid.
So no reason to buy candy anymore.
Besides, our block is long, the front porches are over 100 ft off the street & 100 ft apart. Most kids have done the math - "Skip that street. We can easily triple our take on the next block."

My back is in fair shape. My right shoulder is rather trashed, I'm sad to report.
If anyone has any Houston area contacts where I might bargain with cash greenback USC to get an MRI on the shoulder, I'd appreciate it.
Doc says I need to get MRI / arthogram to see if there is a "label tear".
Best price he's got on referral is about $900. That hurts nearly as much as the shoulder itself right now.
I've got a ridiculously high pain tolerance, and I'd say that the baseline level of pain here, 24/7, is about a "five" on the scale. At times it gets much worse, too.
Thankfully, plain aspirin is quite effective for me, but I still need to take a half of a vicodin tablet to be able to fade off to sleep. NO vicodin through the day, though. I wouldn't get a damn thing done if I did.
So, yeah. Shoulder wise, I'm down about 30% of range of motion, and a good 50% on strength.
In other words, I can barely hoist a glass of bourbon, but do persevere thus. It is the Moron Way.

Btw, this is why I find Obongo's trip to Pakistan to be most suspect. There are things I'd like to see in India; the Taj Mahal leaps to mind in this connection. The only thing I'd want to see in Pakistan is the airport departure lounge.

I have a beautiful tile plaque from Snowhill Tileworks ( http://www.snowhillpotteryandtileworks.com/ ) of a cicada that I picked up a couple of years ago while in North Carolina. I used to keep it in the bay window off my dining room -- now it's 12 inches to my left. Every time I look at it, I fret that it's here instead of with the family of SMFH's beautiful grandbaby*.
If the grandbaby's gonna be "cute as a bug" and named after one, it might help to have something tangible to show how lovely that can be.
*I feel stupid in noting that "with SMFH" is included in "with the family of SMFH's beautiful grandbaby." Such are the times that try men's souls.....

Back in the 80's my Spanish professor in college was a guy who fled Cuba after Castro took over. He was a lawyer for the government, and was scheduled to be "re-educated". He was going out the back door as Castro's men were busting in the front door.
All he ever talked about was how stupid anyone could be for voting for communists like the Democrats. Plus he loved the USA and made sure that he exercised his 2nd Amendment rights at all times since he always had his 45 in his open briefcase on his desk. At his house, there was a gun about every 15 feet. He was certain that Castro had a bounty out on him, and that if anyone came to cash it in, some of them would be getting flown back to Havana the cargo hold of a plane.
Nice thing about going to a small school in rural Virginia is that the campus police and school administration had a very relaxed standard on guns on campus.

--Went to Angola for a relative's wedding. Had stopovers in Namibia and South Africa. Lots of fun. Also went to India and spent time staying with a classmate's family. Also fun. Also enjoyed Peru, Bolivia, and Indonesia. My one scare was getting the runs in Hyderabad, but fortunately I had a pack of tissue given on the Virgin flight to Delhi.

Yep. I've been to many Third World countries, and they were all perfectly much OK. Egypt was (at the time) a great destination; so much to see and do (e.g., Valley of the Kings), it was wonderful. (Best part: seeing 200 year old French grafitti on top of 2000 year old Roman graffiti on top of 2500 year old Greek grafitti - "Aristophanes loves Elektra," that sort of thing). Also true of Tunisia to a lesser extent, with its Roman ruins. No way I'd go to either one now, with the feral Muslims running around loose killing visitors.
China, Thailand, etc. all A-OK.
The worst Third World country I've ever been to: the USSR. Boy, did that place suck.

That is the same time I was in college, and boy howdy was I glad that I was on a very conservative college campus. While every other college campus was having those Nuclear Freeze rallies, our campus was pretty much pushing for increased nukes.
Having a college President that was very conservative with an economics dept run by a free marked capitalist and a Poli Sci dept run by a conservative Mormon sure did open eyes.
Plus, the Cuban Spanish professor was one of the most popular guys on campus. The most popular? A French professor that was a Viet Nam vet that was fucking armed to the teeth.
Funny thing about all of this is that the current (and soon to be gone) college President is a fucking Obama clone complete with the Mooch clone. He came in with much promise and is leaving with the student body AND faculty both united against him. And yes, the student body is still very conservative, and so conservative that the black votes against Obama probably all came from the student body there.

It's not only the delay. It's that the up-front money is actual in-hand money, whereas the insurors may NEVER actually pay.
I know a guy who used to work in automation of solo medical practices.
He said a certain percentage of insurance submissions just get ignored. Deliberately so. The insurors will quietly wait out the practice. Eventually some practices lose the claim or get tired of delaying, and write it off.
Also, the rule of fifths. In a solo medical group, one-fifth of the not medically certified employees handle stuff like janitorial and restocking work, one-fifth do appointment scheduling and the like, and three-fifths code and submit claims.
If you can get 60% of your office labor cost to instantly go away with up-front cash billing? Most businesses would walk over broken glass soaked in burning gasoline to achieve that sort of an improvement.

Heh, that made me remember my first sanitary situation in China well over a decade ago.
I just landed, got picked up at the airport and got taken to a restaurant and went to the Washroom.
Upon entering the stall and seeing the little porcelain lined hole in the floor....I exclaimed "Somebody stole the toilet".
Something should have told me to look around some more but I didn't as nature was calling. Well I squatted down facing the door and when finished looked for the toilet paper. There was none. There was not even a fixture for it.
Being a quick thinking fellow I used 1 Renmibi bills I had the foresight to bring with me with me to accomplish the necessary paperwork. At an exchange rate of about 12 cents per RMB at the time it was still the most expensive toilet paper I ever used.
I wonder if doing that was some sort of "State Crime". I'm sure they intend for didn't Mao's face to be up close and personal in that fashion.
So remember kids, In China they don't provide toilet paper in rest rooms except at a major airport or in a 5 star hotel because the Chinese people steal it.

I took an internal flight in the USSR. The plane was full of Russkis returning from Ukraine (the breadbasket of the USSR) to Moscow with all sorts of produce and such. (No chickens on top of the plane, but there would have been had they been able to put them there.)
Now it turns out that Aeroflot pilots are all ex-Red Air Force, and those on internal flights don't really give a shit about the passengers, so their landing approach closely approximates a Stuka coming in for an attack.
One woman had a bunch of honeydew melons in a string basket, and this 70 degree angle of attack caused the melons to break free and roll forward down the aisle, while various passengers stuck their feet out to try to stop them.
You know, the sort of thing that happens on American Airlines all the time.

I have never had the courage to deliberately implement this in my own person, but in some quarters of the special ops community, the idea when deploying to a Third World theater with contaminated water is to get there about two weeks before assumption of operational duties, and proceed to slurp down the very worst local water, and patiently wait out the process of violently vomiting and shitting as one's system acclimates to the bugs.
The idea being that afterward, you are good to go and need not waste time with purification on the local water sources.
Those guys must have intestinal tracts made out of cold-rolled steel. I've _inadvertently_ implemented this protocol and have ended up weak as a kitten once the indigenous germs had their way with me.

I also think Jim's claim is Worker's Comp which is even worse.
The sports team I worked with's league was self insured for Worker's Comp, and it took about a year, at the earliest, before the claim was paid. First, the provider billed us, we would send the bill to our "insurance company" (really just a repricing company), about 6 months later they sent the "repriced" bill back to the provider. The provider would then go back and forth until they decided on a price. Several months later we would get a bill from our "insurance company" for the negotiated price, and then about 3 months later they paid the bill.
So in the end, the provider got about 60% of the billed price after about 12-15 months of waiting.

I said that I would have disembarked.
Well, came the response, we thought about doing that, but it is a LONG way back from Siberia if you don't grit your teeth and take the flight.
Apparently the classic shoelace "granny knot" is the way to go with this setup.

Having said that, apparently (according to some) it's not the bacterial titer per se but the antigens on the specific bacteria that cause the screaming shits, i.e., it's just the change in antigenic challenges that gets us.
I know shortly after I first got to Europe I was sick as a dog for three weeks (not GI, respiratory), and when my European-born wife first came to the States, she had the same experience in reverse.

It used to be that you didn't really need anything more than catastrophic insurance through your employer and a matching-fund IRA. Safe investment at just over the cost of an excellent plan was a better return and you wouldn't have to "deal" with insurance companies.
I have no idea what to make of the market today. Stocks seem to be "The Only Game In Town" due to government interference.

I do most of my own car maint because those guns won't buy/build/feed themselves.
I must also be super lucky because I've never had a radiator or radiator hose croak while I was driving somewhere.
Its just seems like a solution in search of a problem.

Also very hard-core. But I understand your friends' perspective: there comes a time - generally about 10 minutes after arriving in the USSR - when you basically just want to get the fuck out. NOW. And you're willing to evince a certain flexibility in your normal standards to achieve that goal.
I ended up signing over about $1000 in traveler's checks to some shitty Russian hotel (the one described above) just to get the fuck out of the country. The concierge ("cyka" in Russian, in this case) insisted I also fill in the date on each of the (numerous) travel checks.
So somewhere there's a shitload of American Express traveler's checks endorsed on July 4, 1776.

FWIW, any vehicle I have owned in the last couple decades gets a Fumoto valve in the oilpan to facilitate quick, clean oil changes. And I used to regularly send oil samples to Blackstone Labs for analysis.

Was driving a big block Camaro and got stuck on the DC beltway heading towards Philly. Radiator split and I just made the next exit. After things cooled off, used some 8 Gauge wire to wrap the radiator and then a screwdriver to twist the wire like a tourniquet. Sealed the split and refilled the radiator with straight water (all I had available) and was barely able to make Philly.

That I can understand a bit. Did an oil chance for a mini-truck and had multiple cuts and bruises due to where they put the @#$%^ oil filter.
It is true that too many people have no idea how to maintain their cars. Doing it yourself when you can saves thousands of dollars a year.

Got almost 90 victims. All the animatronics except sonny-n-cher were out and working, Gave double-handsfuls of candy all night, had bunches of people taking selfies with our backdrop. Weather was perfect, lighting was awesome -- even got to use a projection against a wall that we'd bought a decade ago for an inside as an outside.
And none of it is visible now. Teardown was about half-an-hour (which is up from our usual) -- but kids going to school past our house on Monday will see nothing that scared 'em tonight.

2: 4 barrel clogged from what turned out to be a small piece of float bowl gasket material stopping up one of the jets. Tore carb apart, cleaned it out and reassembled it while in emergency shoulder of interstate just north of Chicago.

Unfortunately, I did not see anything past the first hour ...
... Security walked in, said that we needed to clear the theater for our safety, as there had been an "incident".
Everyone walked out, past the 2 police cars with flashing light bars, and over to the Outback Steakhouse, where security then shooed everyone (probably 300 people; from all of the theater) out into the parking lot.
There was nothing on the 10:00 o'clock news ... maybe the 11:00 o'clock news will have something.
I felt a twinge of nostalgia ... for Halloween in Detroit in 1984.

We flew into San Pedro Sula (Honduras) for a day-long stopover before continuing to Roatan. We were the last flight in before the airport shut down. We saw everyone bribe the customs agents to get out quickly.....but we had no place to go. And maybe 150 pounds of SCUBA gear. So we sat and watched and smiled.
As you might imagine, we were processed last.....but we were also processed quickly because everyone just wanted to just go home.

I'm guessing that the gasket material was either visible and unreachable via tools-on-hand, the dis-assembly was a top-down or you're just three-barrels better than me!
The last time I rebuilt a carb was for a 1BBL '73 Plymouth Scamp. It took me six+ hours on a table in a well-lit basement with a Chilton's guide and every tool my Father had at my disposal!

One person there was a semi-friend, a woman I kinda know but we only occasionally do "friend"-type stuff together. Know her somewhat, but not that well.
ANyway, she lives in Alameda, which for the non-Bay Area-ites around here, is an city on an island all by itself, next to Oakland -- a former Navy base, now a quaint and highly desirable middle-class bedroom community with nice old Victorian homes.
The reason it's so desirable are:
1. Compared to skyrocketing house prices closer to Silicon Valley, it's still pretty affordable (though still high-priced compared to elsewhere in the US);
2. It always has been and remains a (laying down the truth here; everyone knows it) a mostly white enclave even though it's just a stone's throw from some pretty hair-raising ghettos in Oakland; the channel separating the island from the mainland keeps most outsiders out;
3. It has a fairly low crime rate compared to the cities all around it.
Anyway, she lives in Alameda, but was at this party in another city. During the conversation, she revealed that she came to the party because she "gave up" handing out candy to trick-or-treaters because it was "too frustrating."
I queried for more explanation, but she didn't want to talk about it any more.
Oh, I should mention that this friend is a big-time moonbat; used to work for a progressive nonprofit; her car now has Bernie 2016 stickers next to the Obama stickers. You know the type.
Anyway, after some winkle-picking, she reluctantly revealed what she was talking about:
For decades, Halloween in her neighborhood in the heart of Alameda was as safe and all-American as it is in any small town. But for the last 5 or 6 years, "they" have been bussing kids in from Oakland to go trick-or-treating in Alameda, because "it isn't safe to trick-or-treat in these kids' own neighborhoods."
"But-- who are 'they'?" I asked.
She had no idea who "they" were -- all she knows is that around nightfall on every Halloween, buses stream into Alameda and disgorge hundreds if not thousands of poor kids from the bad parts of Oakland, to give them a chance at a safe and fun trick-or-treating experience.
Now, for real, this woman is no racist. The farthest thing from it. But...and the reason she was hesitant to discuss the matter further....
With increasing and alarming frequency every year since it started around (cough cough) 2009, the bussed-in kids don't just trick-or-treat -- they trash the neighborhood, steal her decorations, strew litter everywhere, trample and ruin gardens and lawns, and act rather demanding and threatening when you open the door.
The final straw for her came last year when a mother who was chaperoning a group of kids around verbally berated my friend for coming to the door in a monster costume that the mother deemed too scary and which might traumatize the kids. My friend told us that when she defended herself to the mom, saying that no one has ever complained before, the mother replied, "I got a knife. I'm coming back here later, bitch."
That was it, my friend said. Never again. No decorations, no candy, the house dark and locked, this year and all years into the future. So she came to this grownups Halloween party instead.

You wouldn't find that phrase in the Urban Dictionary -- it's been part of English for centuries.
A "winkle-picker" is a short very sharp triangular-bladed knife used in medieval (and post-medieval) British fishmarkets to pry the flesh out of winkles (the sea molluscs -- sorta like limpets or clams).
Over time, any short sharp pointed object came to be jocularly and metaphorically referred to as a "winkle-picker" -- for example, the pointy shoes that the Beatles wore in 1964 were called "winkle-pickers."
Another metaphorical reference that became commonplace over the centuries: whenever you try to pry information out of someone unwilling to talk, it was called "winkle-picking" -- i.e. it was as hard to get the words out of the person as it was to get the meat out of a winkle shell.
I thought this was common knowledge -- hasn't everybody here heard of "winkle-picking"?

The worst I ever felt as a passenger was doing a normal descent to about 150 feet, then hitting all throttles full and climbing out. Minneapolis, about 10 years ago. They clammed down, downplayed it, and tried to gloss it over -- but that isn't done in any set of circumstances that should be labelled "good".

Half the stuff in northern California is called Alameda this or Alameda that.

I haven't heard the phrase used in that context, but it makes sense. I have picked winkles. Marine snails, at any rate. Long Beach on Vancouver Island, many years ago. We found a large colony of the little snails in the sand, locally called "sea olives" (about the size and shape of a small olive, and dark colored shells). Boiled them up, and "winkled" them out of the shells with toothpicks. Very tasty, too.
And I have used the term "winkle out" to describe the process of getting something out of a tight place. But not "winkle-picking". So I recognized the reference OK.

It earned this odd name because the first overland expedition of conquistadors discovering the land route to San Francisco Bay in the late 1760s camped on a hill in what is now San Mateo County and their party all got infested with fleas! Never been explained how or why that happened -- generally one doesn't catch fleas in the wild, but from domesticated or urban animals.
Anyway, the spot where they caught fleas naturally was named "Las Pulgas" ("Place of the Fleas") and dutifully marked on the conquistadors' map -- the first map that showed what we now know as San Francisco Bay.
A few decades later, the Spanish King gave a land grant to a nobleman seeking to settle in New Spain, and this grant included that same hill -- so the nobleman named his new place "Rancho de las Pulgas."
Must have been an important ranch, because over time, the tree-lined road that led from the local town up to his ranch became an important thoroughfare, and was called Alameda de las Pulgas.
Two centuries later, the road still exists, with the same name!

That is a good point, since the jug might be stored in a cold-soaked vehicle. Note that straight ethylene glycol will freeze solid at -30 C. I had a jug of it freeze once, and you could drive nails with it. Glycol ice is much tougher and more shatterproof than water ice. The antifreeze for antifreeze is: water!

I have heard about them, but not by that name. My big concern with such things is that they are vulnerable to being damaged by debris on the road, or by rocks, limbs, and such when driving off-road, which I sometimes do with those vehicles capable of it.
Also, if I can drain the oil from the engine without using any tools, it means that pranksters or vandals can, too. And some engines have their oil drain plug right smack in the bottom center of the pan, where it is especially vulnerable to being hit by debris.
But I could see the Fumoto valve being useful on some modern FWD cars, where the oil pan drain is hidden in an obscure place. None of my current vehicles fall into that category.

Yeah. The only vehicle I have with yuuge! oil capacity is the motorhome with the 903 Cummins in it. My Suburbans are either gas pots, or 6.2 and 6.5 Diesel, and they use oil and filters in automotive grades.
I was in Apache Junction last year with my old '88 Suburban with the 6.2 liter Diesel (still runs like a pup), and I wanted an oil change. Local fast-lube place wanted $100. "All truck Diesels, $100" they said. Sorry, Charlie, not buying that. Went to Wally World, and they did it for $33. I did have to kind of guide their tech on how to do it; he'd never seen one before.
I have a hoist here at home, so oil changes and lubes are not that hard for me to do. Couple weeks ago, I did lube-oil-filter on the '96 Diesel, and the '97 and '08 gas pots. All 3/4 ton 4X4 'burbs.
And all of them, more oil is spilled when changing the filter than is ever spilled draining the sump. The filter is the ugly part of the job. So the Fumoto valve makes the dead-nuts easiest part of the job (on my fleet, at least) just a tad easier, but does nothing to make the awkward filter change any easier or less messy.
But like I said, I wouldn't rule out using one a a vehicle where simply draining the oil was a PITA. I think they are a quality product; just offer no tangible benefits to me in my situation.

Howdy, howdy -- don't know if you saw what I had @499 -- still thinking about how to get that to where it needs to be. Been busy as all get-out with Halloween prep.
All the stuff lives in the attic and we have to bring it down and prep it. It's set-up during the day and runs from about 5:30-9:30, then it all gets torn-down and disappears around 10:00 pm.
There are a couple of reactions that make all the hassle totally worth everything -- the first is from those for which all the stuff is strange and threatening but work their way past freaking-out to the door to collect their treats. Half the stuff is motion-sensitive [and, in fact, a big challenge is setting it up so that different pranks don't set each other off], so there is ample opportunity to be rattled by things happening.
Another chunk of the stuff is interactive -- so another tranche of the visitors we cherish are those who will interact. From "step here" pads to "See Other Side!" blocks that say "Put Me Down!" on the other side, if you trigger everything and watch every full show to the end, we probably have about 15 minutes of stuff in the 50 feet between the sidewalk and our front door.

Apartments aren't very Halloween-friendly, so it isn't a surprise that you could sleep through it. Because it was a weekend, we didn't get one of our "regulars", a local day-care/school. If we were to move tomorrow to my idea of a perfect situation, our Halloween traditions would be in grave disarray. Then, again, my stress level would be so much decreased that Halloween stress wouldn't even register....
