RNC to NBC: You're Fired

Okay, they don't quite go that far -- they say for the moment they're "suspending" discussions about NBC's scheduled debate in February -- but they are taking the sorts of actions that precede a full firing.

Michael Walsh has some general thoughts on media bias.

Wednesday night's CNBC Republican debate turned out to be a tussle between the three left-leaning "moderators" and the candidates on the main stage, most of whom can safely be described as center-right. And finally -- thanks largely to the huge ratings bonanza that is Donald Trump -- the American people got a chance to see the true, ugly, partisan, smug, self-righteous face of what we used to call journalism, but now is simply political advocacy employing computers and television cameras under the shield of the First Amendment.

[T]hink of the MSM as a small Scandinavian village, so far untouched by "diversity." Since everybody knows each other, and follows the same rules, life is calm and good. It's only the outsiders -- those conservatives -- who disrupt the natural harmony. Like foreign bodies, they must be mobilized against and expelled by the progressive immune system. To quote a famous Leftist, Benito Mussolini, the founding father of Fascism, "everything within the State, nothing outside the State."
Now here’s the thing…
There aren’t that many of them. The Leftist MSM may seem like a monolith, but mostly it’s a collection of rueful men and women who wish they were doing the things they’re assigned to cover, instead of actually covering them. Like groupies, they derive satisfaction and self-worth from orbiting the heavenly bodies they watch, and around whom they revolve. As I wrote on Twitter last night:

What the candidates did the other night to the MSM should not be underestimated. At last, it was not just a lone Newt Gingrich bashing the ideological inanity of his interlocutors, but a number of them, including Cruz and Rubio. By presenting a relatively united front against the clear animosity emanating from the three CNBC hosts, the candidates were able to keep the focus off the stupid questions ("are you a comic book version of a campaign?") and onto the biases of the moderators themselves.
Which is why the morning-after headlines were not so much about who "won" but how CNBC -- and by extension the entire MSM -- disgraced itself. Bashing the media may not be a policy platform, but it's nourishment and sustenance to a long-suffering conservative constituency which doesn’t much care whom or what is being bashed so long as somebody or something is being bashed.

Let me disagree with the premise that bashing the media is not a "policy platform." Okay, it's not technically policy -- but it is imperative, and it's more important than any particular policy initiative.

I might be biased here myself, because this is what obsesses me, and this is what angers me. I could care less, to be honest, about the GOP or its programs.

What keeps me interested in politics at all is my loathing for the self-appointed Preistly Class of the media.

The media doesn't just argue with conservatives, nor does it just demean them.

Rather, the media serve as the shamans and witch-doctors of an enemy Tribe, and the purpose of those shamans is to relentlessly disgrace outsiders to the Tribe, which is pleasing to those within the Tribe, while also keeping the shamans in power (because they have no other skills which would earn them money or sex, except the denigration of those considered Unclean).

Their mission is not mere delegitimization of those who do not worship their strange gods. Certainly they do that, endlessly. But it's more than that -- their mission is the full denigration, humiliation, and ultimately dehumanization of the outsiders to the Tribe.

I'll say this three times because it's important:

Cultural Power is Political Power.

Having been promoted to a position from which they can exert their Cultural Power to thereby exert Political Power, they do so, and they are less and less concerned with pretending they don't do so.

The very rich have developed codes over the years to not be quite-so-obvious about the tremendous power they actually have, in order to keep the mobs from hanging them in the streets, and they get quite angry at those (such as Trump, actually) who do not abide by these codes, and who flaunt their wealth and power. Partly they get angry because they have internalized the code of not exhibiting their wealth (except among the other wealthy), and partly it's because they realize Trump's flamboyance is actually a threat to them -- what if people start noticing how very rich they are?

For a time, I think the media attempted to hide how much Unearned political power they had.

I always think it's absurd that the media has political power. Consider: Your doctor is one of the most important professionals you know. He is well-educated and knows, literally, the pathways of life and death.

And yet does he use his position to propagandize politics to you when you go in for a check-up? Does he tell you that the Benghazi Committee was a partisan witch-hunt as he depresses your tongue with a strap of wood?

Now, some doctors do get into the political game -- scolding parents about this or that. Guns in the house, for example.

And people quickly fire them.

The media is a weird thing because the media is not made up of experts in politics. Your family doctor is an expert in health, and if he propagandizes you about health, well, at least that's in his balliwick.

The media are not historians nor political scientists. They are literally, and I say this with all intended denigration of myself, merely fucking people who write sentences, and, increasingly, who don't even write sentences -- they just talk words on the Television.

How on earth did people whose skill-set used to consist chiefly of shorthand notation and fucking typing elevate themselves into "experts" on politics, history, economics, and foreign policy?

They are fucking morons. They have no skills nor special knowledge.

Most of them are among the dumbest "professionals" of any "professional" class, except for teachers.

Lawyers are generally acknowledged as a smart class, as a profession. Not as smart as doctors, but smart.

Reporters?

Idiots.

But Cultural Power is Political Power, and the fact that these imbeciles populate our Idiot Boxes and speak words to us at night puts them in a position where they can serve as the witch-doctors of a heathen, ugly, wicked tribe, if they choose to.

Not that they're qualified to do so -- not that they're entitled to do so -- but that they can do so, simply because they're on the Television, the Morality-Play Theater of the masses.

Delegitimizing the media -- questioning how, exactly, shorthand elevates your opinions any higher than the next asshole sitting on the next barstool -- is absolutely critical.

Cultural Power is Political Power, and to take away the latter, we need to strip the former from them.

How do we let these dumb-bunnies and prom-queens and Law School Legacy Admittances (like Chris Cuomo) pontificate to us without objecting:

Where are your credentials, you stupid nothings?

And if we're talking about credentials, should I not seek out someone with more relevant credentials -- historians and political scientists (though, come on, that last one's a joke), or at least more rigorous credentials (doctor, lawyer, scientist, engineer, author of things that are more than 700 word recaps of what someone else said)?

These charlatans, these Priests with no Religion save the dumb vanilla religion of corporate-friendly socialism, deign to tell the world what is Sacred and what is Profane, and I say to them: I don't listen to Priests, and I especially don't listen to idiot Priests whose fucking gods are Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Sandra Fluke.

They have been delegitimizing us and dehumanizing us for as long as I remember, and we've said fucking boo about it.

It's about time we began delegitimizing and dehumanizing them.

They are Enemy, they are the weird priests of strange gods, and they're not even American -- they define themselves as transnational cosmopolitan progressives who are too swank for any nationality.

They should be treated as such, and rather than play into their fantasies of being the Moral Conscience of a Nation, they should be jeered at every opportunity for the shabby, grasping failed nothings they are, and invited to go preach at different churches, to different people.

Who the fuck are these people, and what qualifies them to tell anyone anything apart from the fact that television make-up successfully sticks to their not-attractive-enough-for-Hollywod faces?

OK, I get that the RNC is eager to get its candidates in front of a national audience in a format that gives the candidates time to talk directly to the American people. If you want to get on NBC's airwaves for 2 hours, you have to give them something. And, just streaming the debates over the internet is not going to get the candidates in front of all those NBC viewers.

But, why not tell NBC that they can choose one moderator and the RNC will choose the other two. NBC gets their branded face in the debate, and the Republicans can have some serious questioners for at least 50% of the debate.

My son just turned 16. I am very confidant that he will end up being drafted if he doesn't join the military voluntarily. This administration has killed the moral of the military at the same time their other policies lead to escalating world conflict. DRG, see the fairly large survey of military families and the key takeaway: only a minority would recommend military service for their young'ins. Now, what I didn't find was any historical context for comparison - i.e., was this issues put to survey respondents the same way for many years, and if so what's the trend? The main issues driving the negative response, reportedly, were lifestyle issues (instability and financial stress), not morale or principled ones.

Anyway, I know several military sorts, incl. special forces people, who modified their career plans and would be very cautious about recommending a military career to others.

And it's not because of our currently absurd political class (GOP included). It's that this is a reflection of an unserious country, not worth risking your a** for, as any effort is likely to be squandered anyway.

Have these candidates really been damaged by the CNBC moderators? Would you be concerned if Rachel Maddow hosted a debate? Because right now the GOP is loaded with talented media politicians (including three non-politicians) who can handle and field these insane and loaded questions. Whether we agree with them on policy, there are at least six candidates on stage who can handle their own in these debates - regardless of how lefty and crazy the questions are. And how to manipulate it for their advantage.

Jeb fumbled the fantasy football. Christie knocked it out.

Cruz took time to not answer a substantive question but to attack the media for previously non-substantive questions.

Rubio called HRC a liar on national TV - which was subsequently ignored. The media pushed back on Mitt but they are not pushing back on Rubio.

So shouldn't we let the media continue to play the same game? At least this cycle? The difference is the players have changed, and the talented debaters are on our side.

You want to know why I keep getting notices in my online medical chart that hey your pap smear is overdue but when I went to the doctor a couple of months ago she was all oh yeah ignore that? Because the government guidelines on frequency of testing keeps changing and heaven forfend your doctor decide that you need a test at a time different than whenever DHS has now decided it should be.

I can go on and on and on. I am aware when I am at my doctor that what I am saying is between me, my doctor and the lowest level flunky at DHS who decides my medical records need to be reviewed for whatever reason.

And then there's HIPAA.

There are many areas that have been politicized where you simply can't avoid it because every doctor faces Federal and sometimes state requirements to ask the questions.

I don't care so much about doctors organizing to protect their own turf. That's basic human nature. I do mind, quite a bit, that doctors and plumbers and everyone else now know they must do so because Big Daddy Government is going to stick its nose in everyone's business.

I teach social studies at a public high school somewhere in the south. I do it because I enjoy social studies and learning.

Now, the liberal members of the profession are loud and obnoxious and constantly making the news (this atheist "God is a myth" dolt in Texas being the latest example). I get that. And I am in no way denying that many teachers are liberal. But that does not mean there are also a great many conservative educators out there. We just don't shoot our mouths off and draw attention to ourselves. But we are there.

So, we can write teachers off as stupid, and we can abandon the entire profession to the libs, and we can simply accept that our children will be indoctrinated with leftist bullshit in high school so that they don't at all object to the leftist bullshit they receive in college. I can go do something else with my life- teaching is not the only tree branch within my reach. I could enter a field chock full of my conservative brothers and we could sneer at the stupid progs of American academia. Other conservative educators could do the same.

Or, we could stay where we are and keep as much normalcy and non-bias in education as humanly possible. Other conservatives could hold this field up as an honorable profession for people, and we could bring more like-minded folks into the arena. We could fight back against the indoctrination we see too often, and push back against the left-wing takeover of our country's public schools and colleges.

Maybe your mind isn't going to change. But I sure as hell don't think scoffing from the sidelines is going to change the problem in American education.

I've had the...pleasure of interacting with the media on several occasions, explaining my area of expertise in regards to real-world problems.

The level of stupidity, of lack of preparation for the topic at hand, never ceases to amaze me.

Once, I was discussing a particular event that happened on the East coast. Did so with many different news entities over a three day span. One stands out. Reporter from a newspaper in the city of Brotherly Love called. Discussion was on the technical, sciencey things that caused said event. As the interview started, reporter provided his background: Normally, he writes about hockey, but was shoehorned into writing about science.

That was 2 1/2 hours of my life I'll never get back. When someone goes to school as an English major, or a J-School major, they're not exactly doing anything in math or science. Hell, as an engineer, I took constitutional law, so that I could speak with some degree of knowledge on subjects afar from my area of specialization.

I think the vast majority of my colleagues leave their politics at the exam room door. In fact, too many doctors (beginning in the late 80's and 90's I would say) abdicated their role as political advocates and have been almost entirely usurped by politicians, bureaucrats and lefty activists. Physician-politicians (Rand Paul, John Barrasso and [urk] Howard Dean are really pretty rare birds.

Used to be that hospital administrators worked for the doctors, or at least were co-equal. That equation has now been reversed.

Most docs I know just shrug and seem to think their voice doesn't matter. Or that if they do speak up they will be pilloried.

Hell yes. My last primary care visit, my doctor spent a good 15 minutes just clicking and tickying and fiddling with the records. Mind you, I was there for a very routine should be 5 minute check up. Once she was done, she turned to me and said "Okay, now I can take care of you." She hates hates hates it. With a passion.

Personally, I am fond of having to point out repeatedly that, as an adopted child, having the system automatically cross reference my parents' medical history to help fill in mine is a fantastic way for my heirs to get rich off the malpractice settlement when the false information in there ends up killing me.

It's really scary when you go to the doctors office and EVERY prescription you have filled in five years shows up on your records.
Nurse wanted to know why I had prescriptions to Lomtil, Dimox, and about twenty other drugs I take with me when I travel.
I explained to her, first it was none of her business, and second remove all of them from my records. They had me taking 20 pills a day.
I take none. Of course, ALL of this information is so secure.

They are responsible for the physical safety of anywhere from 25-30 non-accountable human beings in their charge on a day to day basis.

They have to meet state and federal regulations regarding the provision of their service.

Those 25-30 human beings teachers are responsible for may have 25-50 other human beings who are entitled to talk with you about stuff.

You have an administrative hierarchy which - in general - sucks.

Your idiot coworkers 1) cannot be fired and 2) may be your department head.

The most common thing I run into are good teachers who have a "Behind Enemy Lines" mentality. They want to teach kids, but they almost have to crawl over glass to get the opportunity.

If you look at it from the uniparty perspective, it makes sense that RNC-type Republicans put up with the bias. They need the issues alive that get them elected (gun control, national defense, etc.) and need to pass legislation, or forgo action to defeat legislation, on issues that they get beat over the head with (amnesty, abortion). In that sense, bias legacy media allows then a boogeyman to point to as reasons for not delivering to their purported constituents (while delivering to their actual patrons).

The crap that they were indoctrinating her with as a teacher was immoral, amoral, unpatriotic, traitorous, insipid, incorrect and lacking in any kind of the common sense and experience of humanity in all of it's recorded history.

And then they turned her out in front of classrooms full of kidlets to poison their minds, from the same well.

I'm sure J school is just as evil, if not more so.

Don't know if I'm in the LIB camp, but I'd be willing to have a helluva bonfire at certain institutions of higher indoctrination.

The arguments Ace uses for journalists, I use for lawyers. Look, lawyers as a class aren't as completely useless towards their profession as journalists are.

And there are great journalists although in the Big Media, I can only name Tapper and Knoller. And both of them are left-leaning but at least honest and not imbued with an overinflated sense of self-worth.

But there is no reason whatsoever that 1/3rd of the House, 1/2 of the Senate, most cabinet department leaders and a whole branch of government has to belong to lawyers.

What really sticks in my craw is SCOTUS "interpreting" the Constitution. It's not long, it's not complicated and it's in English. If you need a law degree to "interpret" it, you're not reading what it says.

I believe he meant that some departments receive subvention from the university in excess of the tuition paid by the students, so yes, it is possible for a department to receive more than 100% of the tuition paid by the students it teaches.
Where does that money come from, you ask? From overheads on grants to STEM departments, to our eternal fury.

Those are fair points, but lawyers do have a role. I think it is more of a function that people who want to get in government get law degrees because that will "help" them in government. In their case it is merely a credential.

But the country would be much better off if there were more engineers, businessmen, doctors, etc. as representatives.

The problem arises because laymen think that universities operate entirely off of student tuition, not realizing that a lot of a university's operating budget comes from overheads on Federal and industrial research grants.

So in principle it's entirely possible for a department to receive a sum that amounts to more than 100% of the tuition student paid.

The university figures out a formula as to how much money a department "earns". So if you teach a course, a certain amount of the tuition money gets assigned to your department (central administration takes off the top) but that money gets sent to the college.

At ours it's "50%" which means a third goes to the University/College. I.e. a $300,000 grant means $100,000 goes to the University. Probably 70% is computed that way too. That is 70/170 goes to the U.

My profession is so underfunded, nearly all of us would rejoice at the end of the NSF. (Well, there are some stupid ones who don't realize how badly they're getting screwed.)

And I don't want money we didn't earn. Math doesn't make grant money because we can't figure out a way to lie about curing cancer or global warming. (There are some mathematicians who try to get on that gravy train, not me.)

I just think a student's tuition money should go for courses he's taking. Not to go to departments who can't get enough grant money and whose areas the students might despise.

As to the Bond thing, Moore almost killed the brand, with his lack of hutzpah and all the really stupid stunts and poor comic relief (not his fault) they crammed into the flicks he starred in. I loved him as The Saint (I owned 2 Volvo 1800's, BTW), but as Bond, he sucked. Only one worse was PB.

Thus, no matter what they do to propagate a view - regardless of professionalism - believe it to be just.

Look at how the Occupy Wallstreet vs. Tea Party was reported. They actively swept away drugs, rapes property destruction and pissing in the street and followed the Tea Party looking for the occasional confederate flag or 1 in a 1000 lunatic.

Many have said it before, they want to be the story rather than report the story.

620 Our political culture is changed, long term, by two things:
1. Immigration and
2. Public education.

Control those two things and you control the political culture of the future, which as Ace correcty points out is political culture. Or, as Mark Steyn has pointed out, you can't have a conservative country with a liberal political culture.

So, we can "fight" the prevailing political culture, and its chief emissary the MSM. And a worthy, noble fight it is.

But we are fighting a rearguard action against an ever growing army unless we take control over ie. severely limit immigration from socialist-norm /non-individual oriented countries (i.e. just about everywhere in the world, particularly the Third World) , and unless we somehow "take back" public education.

As to public education the real, structural battle is fighting common core and federalizing the curriculum. The more local control you have, the more curricula resemble the State legislatures, which are far more conservative than those attracted to wielding the control of centralized government.

But in the meanwhile, to borrow the phrase of an AoS commenter: up the squeekhole with the whole fist, including wristwatch.

I did FOREVER. I dropped cable, and I'm here alive to tell about it. What sports I watch I do through Roku. I have a library card and read ALOT and borrow many movies. The media is inserting malware into our brains all the time. Assert our power.

More to the point we must play psych games. Don't let a week or a family event go by when you don't denigrate the media....or the government. Easy to find some examples of its stupidity. Mock celebrities and those that follow them.

Don't have confrontational arguments. That's ramming a stone wall. But chip away with snide comments and snark....e.g., Hear about that global warming mega hurricane that wasn't?? All those poor children not being educated in government schools. Did cha hear Warren accepts money from Wall Street?

Most people are followers. Leave them feeling they might be just a bit stupid and gullible.

Wear at it.

When Mary Mapes got fired, and Dan Rather "resigned" for using inauthentic documents to try to throw the 2004 presidential election to Kerry, they should have lost all credibility, status, power and privilege. They should have been forced by the market into doing some sort of menial, manual labor to put food in their bellies. Instead, they both wrote memoirs. Rather appears on MSNBC and writes op-eds from time to time. And now a propagandist movie has been produced to revise history and rehabilitate their reputations. Look at Brian Williams. He got fired from NBC and now he's working for a subsidiary, MSNBC, of the same corporate parent. At least three people employed by MSNBC are tax scofflaws: Joy Reid, Sharpton, and Perry-Harris. Why are they not ostracized from the industry? The media is actually the CAUSE of many social problems. THEY - the media - are effectively responsible for Ferguson, Missouri destroying itself. They ginned up the anti-cop hatred with their 24/7 coverage (Fox included). For ratings. They pushed the Duke lacrosse lies. For ratings. One of the important functions of markets is they provide feedback. If you make widgets, and potential widget buyers aren't buying your widgets, you are getting feedback that you need to make some changes. It is a sort of disciplinary feedback mechanism. For reasons I don't understand, this seems to not be effective in media/journalism, which is in some ways the most competitive industry there is and by rights out to be the most sensitive to feedbacks. All everybody has to do is NOT click on a channel and they are out of business. There are hundreds of other channels. But for some reason we, collectively, reward the bad actors who gin up riots in Ferguson by clicking on their channels. I agree with the gist of this essay. I have no idea how the take the enormous power held by media away from them.

In the CNBC case, as usual, dumbfuck Priebus had a golden opportunity to expose the hypocrisy of the left, but the boy-man is just not savvy enough. He, and his doofus sidekick, Sharon Day, need to go--yesterday.

He should have issued a press release a month ago (I'm sure he knew then they would not be streaming it free online) to the effect of:
"I thought you were the party for the little guy--the underdog. Yet millions of Americans cannot afford cable (preferring to be responsible and use their scarce $ to feed their family), and you are going to deprive them of the opportunity to see such an important debate that could have profound impact on their electoral decisions?"

(And I really wish Trump would have negotiated this as well. I was pissed that I couldn't watch it.)

And watch, at some point this will used against the RNC, the DNC will say the RNC did not negotiate this due to their lack of recognition of the plight of the lower class. Just you wait, they'll do it. They are master's of projection, deception, and distortion.
