Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Jeb Memo: Current Poll News Doesn't Matter, Because Voters Have A.D.D.I think there's a lot of truth there. Still, probably won't help him to say, and when you're knocking voters (even if the knock has truth to it) it's a sign you're failing. Like you needed more signs.Bush's top lieutenants convened with donors in sopping wet Houston on Monday to calm their fears and retrench for the unforgiving haul ahead. After the confab, Bush's team distributed a 45-page PowerPoint presentation to select reporters, summarizing an optimistic view of the race, touting the Republican candidate's cash and organization, and assuring supporters that early polls are rarely indicative of ultimate success. But in that leak to select media, the campaign purposely left out more than half of what was furnished behind closed doors. The full presentation, obtained exclusively by U.S. News, spans 112 pages and includes a trove of new details, including Bush's internal polling, his vote goal in Iowa and his advertising plan for January.Of course, it includes further attacks on Marco Rubio. While the slides released to the press highlight Bush's Sunshine State endorsements and Rubio's lack of experience, another page for donor edification gets dirtier. It's titled "Marco Is A Risky Bet," and it bullet-points Rubio's "misuse of state party credit cards, taxpayer funds and ties to scandal-tarred former Congressman David Rivera." When Rubio was a state lawmaker, he used the state party credit card for personal expenses, a decision he later called a mistake. In 2005, he and Rivera jointly purchased a home that later faced foreclosure. Another bullet point says Rubio's "closeness with Norman Braman, who doubles as personal benefactor[,] raises major ethical questions." Braman, a billionaire auto dealer, is expected to pour $10 million into Rubio's White House endeavor, The New York Times reports. He's also paid Rubio's wife to oversee his charitable work. The Bush team also mocks Rubio's "tomorrow versus yesterday" argument as one that would be "widely ridiculed by media" should he run against the first potential female president. The most cryptic slight is left for last: "Those who have looked into Marco's background in the past have been concerned with what they have found." A Bush aide says that line refers to concerns Mitt Romney's team unearthed when they vetted Rubio for vice president in 2012.Romney's people immediately disputed that. From Politico: [I]n an email to POLITICO, Beth Myers, a longtime Romney political adviser who in 2012 oversaw his vice presidential search, pushed back on the assertion. "As the senior Romney advisor who handled VP vetting and had access to all the vetting documents, I can say that Senator Rubio 'passed' our vetting and we found nothing that disqualified him from serving as VP,” wrote Myers, who counts herself a Bush supporter. "The Bush aide referred to in this article is simply wrong."So I guess the fact that Beth Myers is a "Bush supporter" should put this question to bed... except, are Bush supporters still really Bush supporters? Rubio is contacting Bush donors, and the Rubio camp claims they're getting positive vibes. According to one of the people, the Rubio camp is finding open minds, some anger over Bush going negative; some Bush bundlers are saying they need a "decent interval"; Rubio camp is casting the discussions as base-touching rather than "grave-dancing" and know it's a "delicate courtship"For more like that -- on the immense fallout from Jeb's performance, and widespread claims that he is absolutely finish -- see AllahPundit's quotes of the day, which read like eulogies for someone no one much liked. Generally, people in the media and commentariat overreact to things, and hype things, because that's what they're paid to do. People don't read political "analysts" because they want a sober reflection on what happened; they read they to get a hysterical overreaction, because hysterical overreactions are fun to read. Like a digest of a soap opera. Most of the time I'd look at the Quotes of the Day predicting Jeb's demise and say "Well then that's not right, if all these imbecile agree." But they may be right here. When stupid, hysterical people all say the same stupid, hysterical thing, it still creates a fact on the ground that stupid, hysterical people believe this. And these stupid, hysterical people are media writers, so their stupid, hysterical claims are read by other people (many of whom are stupid and hysterical). My point is, even if I thought these idiots were wrong as a starting matter (and I'm not sure they are), they may wind up vindicating themselves and making themselves right by simply declaring Bush dead so frequently that the two words become roughly synonymous. Maybe Bush really is done. Maybe that debate performance -- another bad one, listless and, if I may say, Low-T -- wasn't as cataclysmic as the hysterics are saying, but the fact that they're all saying it (they are cowards and are only comfortable expressing pungent, hard-hitting commentary that everyone else already believes and has already written) may make it turn out to be true. Maybe... Drew's longstanding prediction that Jeb would win is wrong. I certainly see Drew shifting his attacks to the New Half-Built Death Star (Marco Rubio). Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

There's an easier argument against Rubio (although it sideswipes Cruz and Paul too).
No more first term senators. Period. Full stop. Not one more. Jindal is making that argument and I think it's far more swaying that Bush's petty attacks which seem to follow the same line broadly but get lost in the execution. Period. Full stop. Not one more. this argument means dick to me. Obama, whether you're willing to admit it or not, did transform this country. He transformed it in a way you don't like, but he did it. So the idea that a Senator can't push his vision through is just wrong. The only way Jeb could have won would have been a 2012 type primary where the only alternative would have been crash and burn type candidates. Period. Full stop. Not one more. this argument means dick to me. Obama, whether you're willing to admit it or not, did transform this country. He transformed it in a way you don't like, but he did it. So the idea that a Senator can't push his vision through is just wrong. Of course, Obama's party unified behind him as he shoved the country hard left, and of course, the GOP establishment hid in the corner like beaten dogs and made not the smallest pretense of acting like an opposition party. What do any of us think the odds are that an actual conservative Republican (and wouldn't it be nice to have one of those in the primary race right now?) trying to move the country back firmly rightward would enjoy EITHER ONE of those key advantages? >>Of course, Obama's party unified behind him as he shoved the country hard left, and of course, the GOP establishment hid in the corner like beaten dogs and made not the smallest pretense of acting like an opposition party.
I know that is a popular position but its not entirely true. Republicans of all stripes fought like hell against Obamacare and were it not for bribery and bending of the rules it never would have passed despite the Dems having both Houses. Had Republicans controlled even one of the Houses back then there would be no Obamacare. The House has voted nearly 50 times since to get rid of Obamacare and I absolutely believe that had Romney won last cycle it would be gone by now, either through waivers or after the Republicans took back the Senate. Though it's the definition of an academic point in a dumbed-down public square, and to somewhat echo torque's comment, Obama "achieved" almost everything he did by pushing - or even stumbling - through an open door. The idiot (and he is as devoid of talent or savvy as he seems) didn't even know what "his" party's long-standing health insurance jihad was really about, and some of you commenters were more involved in the actual congressional process to "craft" the unconstitutional unworkable POS than his WH was. He just rubber-stamped whatever Congress would send him. As with almost everything else in the "transformation" - Obama was a symptom and final enabler, but hardly the author or key player. Name any significant area of public policy, he's a bystander or simply accepting whatever comes to him. As noted by others, the GOP simply disappeared as an opposition, in any historically normal sense. But then again there's hardly anything that's really "transformational" in what's happened in the last few years that started in the WH. The SCOTUS' final transformation into a rogue unaccountable legislature for dummies started long ago, and was completed by a GOP appointee. The corrosion of the civic culture is what produced an absurd figure like Obama, it's not something he created. Posted by: rhomboid at October 30, 2015 01:20 PM (QDnY+) 221

He's a Bush, he's the money-machine candidate (well, we know that Hillary's the Hollywood/Goldman candidate, but Bush is as good as it gets on the GOP side) he's barely paid lip service to any of the base's pressing issues. The problem with Jeb bashing Rubio with the non-attendance issue is that even beyond the fact that it was badly timed, from the primary voter perspective is that it's like he's shouting 'Allahu Akbar' while he charges him with a knife - he's using the enemy's tactics, and a weapon provided by the enemy. And, I think above all in this race, whether it's coming from Bush or anyone else, that's something the GOP primary voters will not tolerate. Posted by: JEM at October 30, 2015 01:34 PM (o+SC1) 264

"Fundamentals Matter"
Like reading a room and not attacking someone who has already won on an issue and taking the side of a wildly unpopular group? Those kind of fundamentals? That singular catastrophic failure to read the electorate not only ended the efficacy of that attack but dooms all future ones to failure as well. Bush has no way to attack Rubio now that won't look like blatant mud slinging by a sore loser. Bush isn't finished per-se but his ability to go straight after Rubio who is beating him is gone. Bush has done nothing but weep support since August. So let's take a look at his fundamentals. 1. He didn't telegraph, he ground shipped his attack with a tracking number. 2. When it was *OBVIOUS* Rubio was ready, and was stomping the issue flat. He went ahead anyway. 3. Even *IF* he took all of Rubios support he couldn't beat Carson let alone Trump. So it wasn't a one shot kill. 4. People choosing Rubio over him are doing so because they don't like him and that's obvious. An clear and obvious unfair attack isn't going to make Rubio's support like him more. 5. Because of this dislike those that support Rubio are likely going to move onto the most reasonable NotBush, NotTrump, left. The big winners would be Fiorina, and Carson IMO if Rubio left. 6. There are I count 6 weak "Establishment Friendly" candidates in the race whom, if they dropped out, would likely transfer a far large share of their support to Bush. He and Kasich are splitting the same electorate. 7. Currently anti-establishment is running 60-65% of the electorate. Acting like a dick to Rubio even if he is quasi establishment isn't going to shift those numbers in your favor to make an establisment win an achievable reality because it just looks like wait-your-turn politics. After that fiasco of just not understanding the fundamentals, who the voters are, what will play well, and just falling on his face the route to victory for Bush narrowed considerably, and now requires quite a bit of luck and serious errors on the part of his opponents. If I were an establishment donor. I'd seriously start looking at the Rubio campaign or perhaps the Fiorina campaign. Posted by: MikeTheMoose at October 30, 2015 01:45 PM (0q2P7) 306

So POTUS and Congress have been ruling against the majority on most issues, immigration chief among them. So the anti-DC cartel candidates are around 60%, including Trump Carson Cruz Fiorina.
Media hyped the "big win" for Rubio in the debate, but Cruz was strong, others were fine. There is no place for Jeb that said he doesn't need conservatives, and carries other baggage. I'd guess Carson will fade and Trump will collect most of those voters. Trump got a lesson in the debate when he flubbed the H1-B issue, and perhaps will "get it", that people want less immigration, and no form of amnesty. Sometimes the "populist" issues are in the right. I don't care if he only builds 1000 miles of wall, but internal policy can't reward those 30 million illegals with citizenship. He must clarify. Bush clarified on the other side, and he is toast. Rubio is still in the flipper category after his gang of eight sellout. I still see only Trump able to take on the leftist machine AND the RINO establishment. But he can't equivocate on immigration. Posted by: Illiniwek at October 30, 2015 01:46 PM (1XT+t) 310

So 40% of a very small number is an even smaller number. And it's not 40% across the board. There are a few states where it will be huge increases. But I've read the average increase will be about 6%. And in many states it will actually be a decrease for some plans. Posted by: Monsieur Mew Mew at October 30, 2015 01:50 PM (0LHZx) 325

Interesting fun fact I chance googled: Rule 40 This obscure rule passed to prevent Paul from being nominated on the convention floor in 2012, requires that candidates win a majority of eight delegations to be entered into nomination and have their delegates counted. It is almost certain to be amended in the week leading up to the GOP convention, depending on circumstances. (For instance, the minimum could move higher, in the case of a clear nominee, or lower, if theres a contested convention.) If it doesn't change, that 8 could be hard for the second tier to hit. The problem with Bush (Or any prominent candidate) attacking another candidate is this: First the attack will have no traction and the attacker will have beclowned himself, tanking his own candidacy. Then once maximum impact on his own reputation is inflicted, someone else will ask the same question, and now it's a storyline and a news item. It will end up dragging both candidates down. I hope I'm wrong.
