I know of some speed cameras here where before they get near it, people will drive 5-10 mph UNDER the speed limit.

Lately I've been reading a lot of the "neoreaction" (or whatever the kids are calling it) sites -- Vox Day's blog, MPC, Moldbug, etc. The hip new far right crowd. And I've noticed something which bothers me.
No, not the guys saying "n----r" or making Jew jokes and feeling all bold and transgressive for it. That's the equivalent of middle-schoolers saying "fuck" when Mom and Dad can't hear them.
What bothers me is how frankly un-American the far right crowd has become. They scoff at all our military operations as nothing but shakedowns for the big corporations and/or Israel. They scoff at democracy and yearn for the good old days before Cromwell (seriously!). They scoff at modern capitalist industrial society.
In fact, except for using the word "n----r" a lot, one would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the new far right and the Occupy Wall Street exhibitionists of a few years back. The only difference I can see is that lefties don't have such a fanboy crush on Putin.
So . . . is classical liberalism really dead? The left abandoned it a century ago, and now it looks as though the right's giving up on it as well. Where does that leave those of us who really do believe in the ideals of America's founders?

Speaking of hopeless millenials, my son had a little Halloween show at his school tonight, and the parents didn't have the decency to shut up and listen to the kids sing on the stage. The ones that weren't yapping or letting their little ones run around screaming were poking at their phones or picking their noses.

That is a really disturbing movie. Its one of the few films I've seen with nudity in it that was actually necessary and effective. That girl is really hot at first but she gets... really awful lying out there day after day. And the change is powerful.

I'm no longer pissy--I've had my rant and a cold one, and life has improved dramatically.
Tomorrow night I'm taking 9 year old Harry Potter to the Zoo Boo to trick or treat with grizzly bears, siberian tigers, and the new female wolverine who is currently waiting for a male suitor. It will be dark, cold, and creepy, which should work out perfectly. And candy, lots of sticky gooey candy. And an occasional wolf howl or coyote cry. In the woods.
If he doesn't come home scared and sugar-soaked, it will not be my fault.

The Luger is a decent pistol, it is light, hard hitting, points fairly naturally, and the toggle lock both gives it a good solid hesitation and absorbs a good bit of the recoil, but it also does not shift the center of gravity like a heavier slide would do.

The Luger wasn't popular in WWI because they require the best quality bullets and absolute clenliness to function. Very good gun if you have those conditions... but not if you don't.
I know the P38 wasn't exactly widespread at the time, but still, those Luger's are tempermental bastards... unlike the c96 (one of the most reliable semi-auto handguns ever).

Apologize for OT, but an Afghanistan vet and his MWD need some help from a NC moron. Vet, Alex, went home in 2013, while Howard went back for another tour. In 2/14, Army pushed the adoption of 273 dogs, including Howard, within 2 weeks, apparently ignoring the law (HR 5314) and the adoption papers filed by former handlers. Unfortunately, a real jerk, who was a deputy until he was fired earlier this month, managed to get Howard and refuses to return him. There is a Bring Howard Home FB page with all the details.
This is happening in Fayetteville, NC and the locals are working hard to stop Alex and Howard from being reunited. Terrible pictures of Howard being kept in a cage while muzzled on FB, with family members laughing over Howard's obvious fear. If anyone knows a vet friendly State Rep or Senator in NC to help get the SBI involved in this, please visit the page and offer some advice. I believe the SBI could be involved because if the town (in this case, Taylortown) was the official recipient, it could not legally gift/transfer ownership of these valuable dogs (even small towns have Municipal Asset Transfer regulations.) The Army, even though it is apparent these small towns only claimed to have a K9 force that needed bomb-sniffing dogs (Taylortown pop, 722), but were handing the dogs out like party favors, is not doing anything to make this right.

Today we drove from Vicksburg (the battle site is awesome!) to the middle of nowhere in central LA. Went thru Waterproof, LA...WTF? They have strange town names down here.
Not like at home where we have towns like Woosung in IL.
Checking in here while checking on the wife, she won a $320 jackpot and quit, TG. I'm heading back to the blackjack tables to recover my $100 losses today, wish me luck, I think I'll need it.

Roller Derby seems to periodically alternate between popularity and obscurity. I remember it being popular in the 70s, and before that in the 50s. I haven't kept track of it since then, but it seems like there should have been a spike in the 90s, and again about now.

Apologize for OT, but an Afghanistan vet and his MWD need some help from a NC moron. Vet, Alex, went home in 2013, while Howard went back for another tour. In 2/14, Army pushed the adoption of 273 dogs, including Howard, within 2 weeks, apparently ignoring the law (HR 5314) and the adoption papers filed by former handlers. Unfortunately, a real jerk, who was a deputy until he was fired earlier this month, managed to get Howard and refuses to return him. There is a Bring Howard Home FB page with all the details.
This is happening in Fayetteville, NC and the locals are working hard to stop Alex and Howard from being reunited. Terrible pictures of Howard being kept in a cage while muzzled on FB, with family members laughing over Howard's obvious fear. If anyone knows a vet friendly State Rep or Senator in NC to help get the SBI involved in this, please visit the page and offer some advice. I believe the SBI could be involved because if the town (in this case, Taylortown) was the official recipient, it could not legally gift/transfer ownership of these valuable dogs (even small towns have Municipal Asset Transfer regulations.) The Army, even though it is apparent these small towns only claimed to have a K9 force that needed bomb-sniffing dogs (Taylortown pop, 722), but were handing the dogs out like party favors, is not doing anything to make this right.

To the best of my recollection, "drones" were originally unmanned aircraft primarily used as targets, or target tugs, for training fighter pilots. Usage circa WWII.
The Predator drones, and the toy drones as used by members of the public differ mainly in their size and capacity for carrying weapons. What they have in common is that both are piloted remotely in real time, by operators over a radio/satellite link.

I remember seeing the Blue Angels flying Phantoms. They certainly had a unique look to them, with the turned-up wingtips and the turned-down elevators. They had badass written all over them.
Then the Angels had an accident, and switched to the A-4 for awhile. It seemed like a step down.
But now they're flying F-18s, and I have no complaint about that.

There was a big investigatory effort around the red-light cameras installed in Columbus (Ohio), and it was found that the company selected to install and operate had bribed city officials. It was actually pretty funny.
The cameras are still in place, but they have all been turned off. By court order.

Yes, that's the part that made me suspicious of him.
And a man who tried to use his position to stalk people via their IPs has control issues and the last thing he needs is a pit. I'm wondering if there have been any dogfight busts in the area. (I will say though that the dog does look healthy in the one pic I saw)

The Solo Act F-16 will "tail walk" a Viper down the runway at stage-one afterburner, at about 40 knots over the ground, showing something like a 70 degree angle of attack.
And then just roll the throttle up to Stage Four, and vertically accelerate to about fifteen thousand feet AGL.
The Hornet might be able to do that, but the USN won't let the Angels or Marines attempt the maneuver, anymore. Not after a couple of fatal accidents involving the same flight evolution.
But the Blue Angels in the Phantom..... very nearly aerobatic porn in tight formation. What they did in the mid-'70s would be entirely verboten under today's safety rules.

The deputy got Howard in 2/14, and Alex has been attempting to get him back for close to a year. If you think the Army helps handlers try to get their dogs, you should read the story of Brent Grommet. He was actually threatened, when he tried to find his dog, Matty, who was also in this group. There is no legal way that Fuller can "own" Howard because of the adoption process of MWD's. Fuller has this nasty habit, along with his multiple-felony class-act sisters, of posting on the BHH with taunts of "you will never get Howard." I suggest you google Bring Howard Home, look at the fb pages and the pictures of Howard, and, then, determine if a decorated military war dog is being honored in his new "home" or not. Howard is an un-neutered, pit bull, former bomb-sniffing, status symbol and that is what this "playa" wanted, imo.

Before I go, since no one, or approximately no one, gets this s**t, may I respectfully rmind my fellow morons of the upcoming birthday on 10 November of the USMC at Tun's Tavern.
The celebration is a wonderful highlight of your year, since you are alive. If you are alive, a Marine probably stopped a bullet for you. The "gratitude Attitude" is the best one for humans, studies prove.
Have some roast beef (grass fed for best flavor and health), some green beans, some chocolate cake, and some punch.
My favorite punch recipe?
A dense tea of "Jamaica" or hibiscus petals (available in your local WalMart in the Hispanic foods section, spice area), chilled; pomegranate juice; rum. I personally like a Barbados rum that has spent a little time in the cask to acquire an amber color. If you have the means, an aged Jamaican rum will be delicious. The alarmingly spelled Mount Gay (pronounced "mung-gee" where it's made) may be the best match. I have not tried this with an "agricole" rum, but I suspect you may want to increase the proportion of Jamaica tea (chilled) to make this concoction especially delicious. I'm just about to try it.

A dense tea of "Jamaica" or hibiscus petals (available in your local WalMart in the Hispanic foods section, spice area), chilled; pomegranate juice; rum. I personally like a Barbados rum that has spent a little time in the cask to acquire an amber color. If you have the means, an aged Jamaican rum will be delicious. The alarmingly spelled Mount Gay (pronounced "mung-gee" where it's made) may be the best match. I have not tried this with an "agricole" rum, but I suspect you may want to increase the proportion of Jamaica tea (chilled) to make this concoction especially delicious. I'm just about to try it.

If I recall correctly, the F-4 holds the record for the loudest fighter ever produced. I remember when the Blue Angels flew them and the noise made them quite the crowd pleaser.

I thought I was experiencing an earthquake or something. I felt the rumbling thru my entire body and the roar was all I could hear. It wasn't until it got out in front of me a bit where I could see it that I put two and two together.

I would have to agree about the general listlessness of millennials nowadays. Just in my classes I have to push them and push them just to do practice problems in the text in order to learn the material. When I was in school, I didn't need pushing to practice, I did it on my own because I actually wanted to learn chemistry. For these people, they expect it to be handed to them. It's frustrating.

I have been reading some posts from people who are working their butts off to get these two war veterans back together and it seems that there is a LOT of prejudice/snobbery concerning MWD's. We lived in base housing, on a hill that overlooked the runway. I was mowing the lawn, watching them practice when one of the F-105B aircraft just disintegrated. I saw a chute and was hoping the pilot was able to eject, but it was the drag chute. It was a tragic day.

One of the things most telling about the deputy was his claim that having a dog slept with you is nasty (he, of course, made "nasty" all caps) and no one should ever have a dog in their bed because they were dirty animals. I'm sure Howard feels the same about him.

The crux of your complaint is that the Army screwed up by adopting dogs out, and not giving their in-theater handlers right of first refusal to adopt them upon return to civvy life, right? Then why muddy the waters by throwing mud at the individuals who did adopt those dogs? Maybe they weren't aware that there were any prior claims on the animals.
If the whole policy is reversed now, maybe many innocent people who adopted dogs in good faith will get pets taken from them. There is no easy answer for this. Sometimes, there is no way to undo a bad decision, without hurting even more people.

Drilling Engineer. The company I work for just had a big round of "voluntary" early retirement. It really hit our operations in the middle east so they took our most experienced foremen off of our rig in West Texas and sent them overseas. And instead of hiring consultants to backfill those positions they're rotating engineers from the office as night foremen. 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off, 2 weeks in the office. Not the worst gig in the world.

I moved my oldest to San Diego at 3 yrs. old in 1988. The blue Angels buzzed our house and we went running out front like everyone else on the block to watch them practice for the upcoming show. I swear, we could see their helmets! Took him every year to broil on that tarmac and get chills watching that show, but he'll tell you the best was laying on the roof while they flew over.

I think one problem with relying on animal control to ensure there was no abuse is that when this was investigated Fuller was still a county deputy. I wonder if there is not more lee-way automatically given to your fellow county officials? Too, this is a dog-fighting area, so they might just look for physical injury and ignore anything less. I am sure they have a very difficult job.

Nice little old-fashioned, tiny air base, just drive right in (the Miramar show's 3 days make it the largest event, by attendance, on the west coast - at least that recently was the case).
Friend lives just west of the base, usually has a nice outdoor party on his huge deck out back - No. 5 or No. 6 (the two planes that fly mostly apart from the diamond) fly right over his house - you *can* see their helmets some times. So that covers the Miramar show for me now.
At El Centro you're actually closer to the flight line than at Miramar, and of course small crowd, small place, easy. Of course there are fewer static displays and fewer aircraft aloft, but still a solid show. And you get foreign military there you never see at Miramar. Luftwaffe from Holloman, Dutch/other Euro F-16s from Luke, and British Apache helicopter crews who do desert and live-fire practice in AZ.
Recall very clearly the Blues in their F-4s. We'd go to the Miramar show every year. I still have the programs from all those shows in a box.

Best airshow moment for ME, ever.
I had the New Dawn at her final berth, at Payco Marina, Slip J-8, in Galveston, TX. Was still living aboard at the time.
There was a Wings Over Texas air show at Sholes Field, the big airport at Galveston. They used to fly B-17s & B-24s out on Naval Patrols from there in WW-II..... not a pumpkin patch of an airport.
Anyway.
The airshow was underway, and a USAF F-15-C was absolutely beating up the field, putting on one of the most aggressive solo-act air shows that I've ever had the pleasure to see.
So, I go and hank-on the boat's 24"x 36" American Flag, and run it up the Mainmast Halyard, instead of the mere 4 ft. taffrail pole.
My boat was berthed maybe one mile to the North of the runway threshold.
The Eagle pilot very obviously saw me hoist the flag, and saluted the boat.
He made a VERY tight 8 or 9 g turn, and flew in at less than 100 ft. AGL, and was very easily near the Mach on the approach.
And then stood the Eagle on it's tail, RIGHT OVER MY FUCKING BOAT, lit the burners and went straight up into the sky, with a full wing-waggle up to over 10k AGL..
And then came down in a dive, pulled up again, right over the boat, and gave the same wing-waggle as before, in salute.
I was screaming. I was HOWLING. I was crying tears of pure adrenaline and joy.
He'd put on a solitary, one man air show, for a solitary, one man salute from a thirty foot sloop.
Y'all ain't gonna fuckin' beat that one, and you never will, not in my books.
I love me some Blue Angles and Thunderbirds.
But I'll buy that Eagle pilot a bottle of whatever he wants, if ever I can find out who he was.

I never really could love those things; kind of an ugly duckling, but that is sure one well-preserved example. To go from the sublime to the ridiculous, yesterday I dragged out an old 36 horse 1100 (?) cc VW engine that I had got in a lot of stuff bought a few years ago. It was stuck. So, with the aid of a floor jack, I raised it 15 inches off the ground, and then grabbed it and grunted, and heaved it up onto my welding table. Didn't bust anything in the gut or spine department, either! Pulled out the wrong spark plugs, shot some penetrating oil into the cylinders, and then bolted a steel bar to the flywheel so I could work it back and forth. What do you know? Inside of 10 minutes, I had it turning freely, and all its little valves go up and down, too, and have "some" clearance at the tappets. I'm going to see if I can make it bark tomorrow.

Pulled out the wrong spark plugs, shot some penetrating oil into the cylinders, and then bolted a steel bar to the flywheel so I could work it back and forth. What do you know? They'll just google it when they need it or just somehow get some schmuck to do it for them. It's all so beneath them. And they can get a parent arrested for trying to teach it to them.

One of my great 'toys' as a kid was a Model T spark coil. I still have it. One could conduct lots of interesting experiments with one of those.

The budget deal/debt ceiling lift includes a reallocation of SS payroll taxes, diverting more to the Disability part. This has gone cash negative for some time, and even with the faux interest, it's way negative and burning the IOUs so fast it would be bust by the end of 2016.
By law, that would mean benefit cuts automatically. So they just reallocated to, on paper, give more payroll money to the DI fund and kick it down the road. But this is at the expense of the Old Age/Survivors part, which brings it detonation closer.

Well, I did now....
My uncle seasons firewood on his five acre place in Knoxville. He repurposed one of his outbuildings and has wood stacked crossways. Most of his is green garbage wood, so he seasons it for a year for every inch thick it is -- that's probably way longer than is needed for good oak.
Also remember that using a power log splitter is one of those things that is sooooooo boring and monotonous in the middle of the bell curve, but can be soooooo nasty, dangerous, and unpredictable out on the tails. It's quite tempting to say, "I've only got a little -- and the safety gear is way over there -- and I've done it thousands of times with no problem."

fff, was talking to a bartender last week about pizza. Turns out it's easy to make a pretty darn good pizza on your own
Mine was pretty good, for a first try. You get a thing of raw dough from a local pizzeria (yess, they'll sell it to you). Hold it in both hands, let it hang down and rotate it from hand to hand, until it is fairly thin & lay it on the baking pan.
Use a rolling pin to get out the air bubbles. Add toppings.
Preheat to 500 degrees. Bake for 12-14 minutes.
Simple. No more frustration at the smaller and smaller amounts of cheese they've been putting on pizzas as Obama's wreckovery has done its work. My favorite: bacon, asparagus, red onion pizza.
