Overnight Open Thread (30 Oct 2015)

So for those of you going to some costume parties, what are you going as?

Drone Lawfare

Update on the Kentucky drone shoot down story. Judge rules man had right to shoot down drone over his house.

Speed Camera Danger

Not surprising. You see the same thing here with red light cameras. UK analysis identifies speed camera danger as there is an eleven fold increase in panic breaking within 50 feet of camera.

Hornet Ball 2015

Our Future

American millennials are stupid.

the study’s conclusion states "the comparatively low skill level of U.S. millennials is likely to test our international competitiveness over the coming decades… that future looks bleak."

If that's not depressing enough for you, then here's the 2016 Military Power index.

Winter Update

Substantial increase in Siberian snow cover bodes well for east coast snow potential.

Weird Al

Ronda Rousey

Ronda Rousey's fighting tips.

How to Win a Bar Fight

"Grab a chair. That's what my mom (judo champion AnnMaria De Mars) told my sister when she went off to college. She didn't give her advice on how to do laundry. She said, 'Listen: You're a small person, so if shit goes down at a bar, you grab a chair and you just start swinging it around.' She never taught us how to put makeup on, she never taught us how to cook, but she did teach us that if you get in a bar fight, you grab a chair and swing it around."

VW Fraud

Ok, this is getting a bit ridiculous. VW emissions fraud will cause about 60 premature deaths in US. I'll go one further. VW's driven by drunk illegal aliens will cause even more premature deaths.

Halloween Fireballs

We're in the viewing window for the Taurid meteor swarm.

However, no viewing chance for the SMOD tease tomorrow unless you have a decent telescope and some skill.

Insurance Rates

You're already paying for global warming. Insurance companies raise prices because of exaggerated global warming threat.

Hollyweird

Boo hoo Harvey Weinstein. You're only pissed at Tarantino because it might hurt your bottom line, not at what he actually did.

Dog Video

Tonight's ONT brought to you by roller derby:

8 Evening morons, how fares the horde?

Preparing for the Armageddon that is the Halloween festival in Athens, Ohio. 40,000 students plus another 25,000 coming in from out of town for the biggest block party in Ohio on Saturday. It's going to be epic suck.

What all of these people are flying are not "drones". Drones are Military craft. The Hobbyists are flying UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles).

I would not normally pedant this, but rules and regs are being written around these descriptions.

28 Apparently there's a new deadly gay amnesia drug out there. At the Daily Mail they've got the story of some boxer named Yousaf something or other, who was discovered to have starred in a black gay porn video on some website.

He claims that of course he's not gay, not in the slightest, and is, hey, totally into women. In fact, he says, he's what you call a whoremonger. He claims they drugged him and he has no memory of making the video and having sex with those other two dudes.

No memory at all. They told him it was gonna be with hot chicks, slipped him something in a drink and next thing he knows, he wakes up with no memory of anything.

So watch out for this new deadly gay amnesia drug.

How did someone this stupid get so much power, influence and money in Hollywood?

After the Charlie Hedbo shooting, he wrote what could possibly be the dumbest Op-Ed column I have ever read. Equating Charlie Hedbo cartoons to Bugs Bunny and Donald Duck.

This guy is frankly world-class stupid. Yet, he has a significant influence on our vulgar and disgusting pop-culture.

Posted by: Rosemary Kennedy at October 30, 2015 10:32 PM (+lVUW)

63 This may be a lot more serious than most morons are in the mood for at this time of night, but here goes.

Lately I've been reading a lot of the "neoreaction" (or whatever the kids are calling it) sites -- Vox Day's blog, MPC, Moldbug, etc. The hip new far right crowd. And I've noticed something which bothers me.

No, not the guys saying "n----r" or making Jew jokes and feeling all bold and transgressive for it. That's the equivalent of middle-schoolers saying "fuck" when Mom and Dad can't hear them.

What bothers me is how frankly un-American the far right crowd has become. They scoff at all our military operations as nothing but shakedowns for the big corporations and/or Israel. They scoff at democracy and yearn for the good old days before Cromwell (seriously!). They scoff at modern capitalist industrial society.

In fact, except for using the word "n----r" a lot, one would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between the new far right and the Occupy Wall Street exhibitionists of a few years back. The only difference I can see is that lefties don't have such a fanboy crush on Putin.

So . . . is classical liberalism really dead? The left abandoned it a century ago, and now it looks as though the right's giving up on it as well. Where does that leave those of us who really do believe in the ideals of America's founders?

We can spend the night trying to map the seating chart of the first French National Assembly onto modern political factions, or teasing out the real definitions of "liberal" and "national socialist" but at the end of the day most normal people know that Commies and Progressives are considered the "left" and people who oppose them are considered the "right."

135 Not surprising. You see the same thing here with red light cameras.

Which are totally un-Constitutional and illegal, BTW.

One has to wonder how red light cameras could be legal anywhere when the cops still seem to feel obligated to stop you in order to issue you a ticket. It seems that the cops were just being silly gooses when all they had to do, evidently, was jot down your license plate number and mail the ticket(s) to your house, at their pleasure. I mean, why would any cop bother pulling anyone over when it's so much safer and easier to just mail them the ticket and be done with it?

The answer to that is part of the proof that red light cameras are illegal (locally) and as to their un-Constituonality, that is even simpler to surmise.

There was a big investigatory effort around the red-light cameras installed in Columbus (Ohio), and it was found that the company selected to install and operate had bribed city officials. It was actually pretty funny.

The cameras are still in place, but they have all been turned off. By court order.

In the last "Back to the Future" movie, Glover did not want to be in it. He had a small part, so Spielborg hired and actor that looked somewhat like Glover, and he wore a mask to look exactly like Glover.

Glover sued Spielborg and won. Spielborg is incredibly rich, and the million dollars he had to pay Glover was nothing to him, but he is just a rich ass.

We're doing pretty much an all day thing tomorrow. Going over to friends' early afternoon for a big party for FL/GA game. Then home to change the little ones into costumes. Over to my parents for a little bit so they can see them. Then back to the same friends' place for a block party/trick or treating.

The Luger wasn't popular in WWI because they require the best quality bullets and absolute clenliness to function. Very good gun if you have those conditions... but not if you don't.

I know the P38 wasn't exactly widespread at the time, but still, those Luger's are tempermental bastards... unlike the c96 (one of the most reliable semi-auto handguns ever).

In 2/14, Army pushed the adoption of 273 dogs, including Howard, within 2 weeks, apparently ignoring the law (HR 5314) and the adoption papers filed by former handlers. Unfortunately, a real jerk, who was a deputy until he was fired earlier this month, managed to get Howard and refuses to return him. There is a Bring Howard Home FB page with all the details.

This is happening in Fayetteville, NC and the locals are working hard to stop Alex and Howard from being reunited. Terrible pictures of Howard being kept in a cage while muzzled on FB, with family members laughing over Howard's obvious fear. If anyone knows a vet friendly State Rep or Senator in NC to help get the SBI involved in this, please visit the page and offer some advice. I believe the SBI could be involved because if the town (in this case, Taylortown) was the official recipient, it could not legally gift/transfer ownership of these valuable dogs (even small towns have Municipal Asset Transfer regulations.) The Army, even though it is apparent these small towns only claimed to have a K9 force that needed bomb-sniffing dogs (Taylortown pop, 722), but were handing the dogs out like party favors, is not doing anything to make this right.

266 Hi all from the Delta country. This our first time here and very different than IL, as expected. Having a great time.

Today we drove from Vicksburg (the battle site is awesome!) to the middle of nowhere in central LA. Went thru Waterproof, LA...WTF? They have strange town names down here.

Not like at home where we have towns like Woosung in IL.

Checking in here while checking on the wife, she won a $320 jackpot and quit, TG. I'm heading back to the blackjack tables to recover my $100 losses today, wish me luck, I think I'll need it.

I would normally start to bitch about this, but what it means is that the feral street predators are going to go after the easy prey who are numb to their surroundings, and won't be going after the likes of me, so from my entirely selfish perspective, that's all right.

Yeah. Tonight I was driving home from work, and stopped at a red light. I looked over at the "right turn only" lane and saw an attractive woman in a minivan engrossed in her phone. "She's stopped at a light, so I guess that's OK", I thought.

The light changed and I proceeded on ahead, then saw her making a sudden lane change into my lane in the middle of the intersection, in my rear-view mirror.

294 MWNP, I think there is too much flux in the technology and the usage for pedantry to be useful. Is a cruise missile a drone? Was a V1 flying bomb a drone?

To the best of my recollection, "drones" were originally unmanned aircraft primarily used as targets, or target tugs, for training fighter pilots. Usage circa WWII.

The Predator drones, and the toy drones as used by members of the public differ mainly in their size and capacity for carrying weapons. What they have in common is that both are piloted remotely in real time, by operators over a radio/satellite link.

My understanding of the original use of "drone", like the aforementioned target drones, is that they were autonomous, and flew either a programmed set of maneuvers, or else simply flew a straight-line flight, with simple servomechanisms to correct for instability. Remote control was either not possible, or else rarely done for practical reasons.

Perhaps we need to coin new, more specific terms for unmanned aerial vehicles. How about "military drones" vs "civil drones"?

I'd imagine that a late version F-4 Phantom, with all the upgrades of the past 20 years, would still be one hell of a contender.

With modern radars, computers and datalinks, it would still be a strong, and very, very fast airframe.

Sure, it lacks stealth, and won't turn with the 4th generation teams..... but with a skillful pilot and effective AWACS, I'd imagine it'd still be a mistake to take it lightly.

To my eye, it's still visually the most menacing, threatening lookin' jet of the supersonic age.

The Mig 31 variants and various Sukhois are close in their hunched-shouldered, big nosed way, but they're just not quite the Phantom.

Hell, it looks like it's pissed and you owe it money, even when it's just sitting on the ramp.

The former deputy has refused to show any official adoption papers and the Fayetteville PD refuse to state if they saw any or not. His story has changed from "he got the dog from the chief", to his claims he, as a civilian, adopted him (which would be impossible because of the home visits, etc.) I have seen the pictures from the deputy, Fuller's, family's fb pages of Howard stuffed in a cage, muzzled. Howard saved Alex's life and LEGALLY under HR 5314, Alex's adoption papers should have been this a no-brainer. But, the Army wanted to rid themselves of these Military War Dogs in 2 weeks and couldn't be bother with legalities, apparently.

The deputy was not fired because of Howard. This "deputy" threatened to use his job to research the ip's of everyone that was posting on the BHH fb page and sue them (for what, I have no idea) and then said he would be willing to part with Howard if the 17,000 that liked the Bring Howard Home page gave him $10 apiece because $5000 wasn't enough. This same guy has multiple FB pages: he was the good-guy deputy by day and the "playa" by night. Howard is just a payday for him. Please check out the WRAL articles where he admits he attempted to extort money and abuse his authority to attack those who want Howard with someone who loves him.

A small victory against the corruption of the State.

Are there any good countermeasures to use against red light cameras? I thought perhaps a license plate frame made up from retro-reflectors to bounce the light from the flash right back at the camera might work, but have not tried it. Test fails can run into money.

Yes, that's the part that made me suspicious of him.

UAV-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (just the plane)
UAS-Unmanned Aerial System (plane, launcher, controller)

There are 5 groups of UAVs based on weight, altitude and speed.

Then you have things like Lethal Miniature Aerial Munition (LMAM) like AeroVironment's Switchblade. Pretty fun system that packs a punch.

Drone probably shouldn't have been used in the above article.

The Angels flew the A-4 as an "economizing" measure, in the aftermath of the late '70s "fuel crisis".

No afterburner on the A-4. No smokin' J-79s shaking the tarmac, either.

The thrill was gone.

Of course, the F/A-18 is a vast improvement over the A-4, but I do believe that those old Phantoms gave the best air shows, ever.

Same for the USAF Thunderbirds. They flew the Phantoms for a while, to great effect.

And as much as total Blue Angels fan as I am, I must say that the USAF T-Birds are giving a better, ballsier show in the their F-16s, these days.

The Solo Act F-16 will "tail walk" a Viper down the runway at stage-one afterburner, at about 40 knots over the ground, showing something like a 70 degree angle of attack.

And then just roll the throttle up to Stage Four, and vertically accelerate to about fifteen thousand feet AGL.

The Hornet might be able to do that, but the USN won't let the Angels or Marines attempt the maneuver, anymore. Not after a couple of fatal accidents involving the same flight evolution.

But the Blue Angels in the Phantom..... very nearly aerobatic porn in tight formation. What they did in the mid-'70s would be entirely verboten under today's safety rules.

Dear Lord, did they ever put on a show back in the day. I'm glad I got to see it, once.

Posted by: Colorado Alex at October 31, 2015 12:50 AM (fC9RO)

340 The deputy got Howard in 2/14, and Alex has been attempting to get him back for close to a year. If you think the Army helps handlers try to get their dogs, you should read the story of Brent Grommet. He was actually threatened, when he tried to find his dog, Matty, who was also in this group. There is no legal way that Fuller can "own" Howard because of the adoption process of MWD's. Fuller has this nasty habit, along with his multiple-felony class-act sisters, of posting on the BHH with taunts of "you will never get Howard." I suggest you google Bring Howard Home, look at the fb pages and the pictures of Howard, and, then, determine if a decorated military war dog is being honored in his new "home" or not. Howard is an un-neutered, pit bull, former bomb-sniffing, status symbol and that is what this "playa" wanted, imo.

344 "In 2/14, Army pushed the adoption of 273 dogs, including Howard, within

filed by former handlers."

Something has to be going on inside of Big Army, because this is just the latest in a long string of facially illegal MWD outplacements by them.

Looks like it's time to make some flag ranks sweat under the hot lights of a pissed-off Congressional committee to get them to do the things that they ought by rights to have done in the first place.

The celebration is a wonderful highlight of your year, since you are alive. If you are alive, a Marine probably stopped a bullet for you. The "gratitude Attitude" is the best one for humans, studies prove.
Have some roast beef (grass fed for best flavor and health), some green beans, some chocolate cake, and some punch.
My favorite punch recipe?
A dense tea of "Jamaica" or hibiscus petals (available in your local WalMart in the Hispanic foods section, spice area), chilled; pomegranate juice; rum. I personally like a Barbados rum that has spent a little time in the cask to acquire an amber color. If you have the means, an aged Jamaican rum will be delicious. The alarmingly spelled Mount Gay (pronounced "mung-gee" where it's made) may be the best match. I have not tried this with an "agricole" rum, but I suspect you may want to increase the proportion of Jamaica tea (chilled) to make this concoction especially delicious. I'm just about to try it.
So, celebrate our Corps. Live long, unless you fuck it up. Have many children.
He who finishes with the most grandchildren wins.

Just in my classes I have to push them and push them just to do practice problems in the text in order to learn the material. I have been reading some posts from people who are working their butts off to get these two war veterans back together and it seems that there is a LOT of prejudice/snobbery concerning MWD's. Seems insane to me, since any dog that saves just ONE life is a hero and deserves dog cookies and belly rubs.

One of the things most telling about the deputy was his claim that having a dog slept with you is nasty (he, of course, made "nasty" all caps) and no one should ever have a dog in their bed because they were dirty animals. I'm sure Howard feels the same about him.

387 "But the Blue Angels in the Phantom....."

The Phantom, brilliant design and awesome jet though it was in many ways, was not a champ for outward visibility on the part of the pilot. The assumption was of a radar-controlled long range missile fight. Why worry about seeing anything other than instruments and screens?

Vietnam-era naval and Marine aviators complained a lot about this not well thought through layout. Note that follow-on US fighter designs had bigger canopies and seated the pilot higher for an improved view.

This probably didn't matter too much for the main body of the Angels' flight in the F-4 era, but for numbers five and six, flying their rejoin profiles while not being able to see very well in certain directions must not have been much fun.

390 My beautiful and witty ex-wife, of impeccable lineage, and I were walking over the Houseforts ruins near Hadrian's Wall when a Tornado buzzed us at about 7' above the terrain.
Not supersonic, but the Doppler did f**k us up.
Her dad relieved McAuliffe at Bastogne, so she was a cool customer, but she was shaken, too.
A couple minutes later, after I ruled out the personal possibility (this was Her Majesty's air warrior in defense of the Realm), I though, "Fuck, yeah! Get some!"
The normal reaction, if a bit retarded in my case.

Drilling Engineer. The company I work for just had a big round of "voluntary" early retirement. It really hit our operations in the middle east so they took our most experienced foremen off of our rig in West Texas and sent them overseas. And instead of hiring consultants to backfill those positions they're rotating engineers from the office as night foremen. 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off, 2 weeks in the office. Not the worst gig in the world.

394 I have the pleasure of watching the Blue Angels most years from a boat in S.F. Bay. They fly right overhead.

When I was a kid, my dad was stationed at Hamilton A.F.B. In 1964 the Thunderbirds were putting on a show for Armed Forces Day and the day before the show they were doing practice runs.

We lived in base housing, on a hill that overlooked the runway. I was mowing the lawn, watching them practice when one of the F-105B aircraft just disintegrated. I saw a chute and was hoping the pilot was able to eject, but it was the drag chute. It was a tragic day.

Well, in his defense, my Daddy felt the same way. He loved dogs, but he didn't want them in the house. Some Southerners are very put off by animals inside and most black folks I know don't like it either.

I bet if the handler told the guy he was done trying to get Howard back, the dude would be begging him to take him in a month. He probably enjoys the aspect of keeping Howard from him and all the attention he's getting.

396 AOP.

The '104 used a version of the same J-79 that powered the Phantom. So, loud, yes.

And would out accelerate everything but a guided missile in those days, too. The Phantom was faster, at Mach 2.2

But the F-104 could hit Mach 1 faster than anything else flying at the time, and for decades after, too.

Hmmm..... put some Mach compatible airfoils on a B-52, hang eight J-79s under the wings....

Any 'ettes at that airshow would go home rather satisfied, I'd imagine?

399 One of the things most telling about the deputy was his claim that having a dog slept with you is nasty (he, of course, made "nasty" all caps) and no one should ever have a dog in their bed because they were dirty animals. I'm sure Howard feels the same about him.

Posted by: Ever at October 31, 2015 01:19 AM (QZdJj)

I don't think you are doing your cause any good by casting aspersions against the deputy who wound up in possession of the dog. The crux of your complaint is that the Army screwed up by adopting dogs out, and not giving their in-theater handlers right of first refusal to adopt them upon return to civvy life, right? Then why muddy the waters by throwing mud at the individuals who did adopt those dogs? Maybe they weren't aware that there were any prior claims on the animals.

If the whole policy is reversed now, maybe many innocent people who adopted dogs in good faith will get pets taken from them. There is no easy answer for this. Sometimes, there is no way to undo a bad decision, without hurting even more people.

411 Hank,

I saw some USAF ANG '105s flying in 1976, out of Kelly AFB, TX. Single stage afterburner, either OFF or ON, with no stages.

Louder than a Phantom.

But also, the worst choice the USAF could ever use for a Thunderbird plane.

It was optimized for high speed, low altitude penetration bomb runs.

As for yanking and banking? Notsomuchguido.

Frankly, it was the FB-111 of it's day. It's an ENORMOUS aircraft. With iddy biddy teeny tiny wings.

It preceded the Wham-O Lawn Dart kid's toy by a decade or so, or that's the name it would've earned. Even the wings looked strangely similar in plan form.

Look, I think you have the right of this, but concentrate on the wrongness of the procedure, not on the assholitude of the adopter. Because if you make it a battle of personalities, then, to the other side, you are the asshole. And to a disinterested third party, it's just two assholes arguing over a dog.

I think one problem with relying on animal control to ensure there was no abuse is that when this was investigated Fuller was still a county deputy. I wonder if there is not more lee-way automatically given to your fellow county officials? Too, this is a dog-fighting area, so they might just look for physical injury and ignore anything less. I am sure they have a very difficult job.

All the Blue Angels talk, as noted a few months back I now skip the big show at Miramar (used to volunteer at it) and instead go to their first annual show in early March out in El Centro (the Angels' winter training home). Nice little old-fashioned, tiny air base, just drive right in (the Miramar show's 3 days make it the largest event, by attendance, on the west coast - at least that recently was the case).

Friend lives just west of the base, usually has a nice outdoor party on his huge deck out back - No. 5 or No. 6 (the two planes that fly mostly apart from the diamond) fly right over his house - you *can* see their helmets some times. So that covers the Miramar show for me now.

At El Centro you're actually closer to the flight line than at Miramar, and of course small crowd, small place, easy. Of course there are fewer static displays and fewer aircraft aloft, but still a solid show. And you get foreign military there you never see at Miramar. Luftwaffe from Holloman, Dutch/other Euro F-16s from Luke, and British Apache helicopter crews who do desert and live-fire practice in AZ.

Recall very clearly the Blues in their F-4s. We'd go to the Miramar show every year. I still have the programs from all those shows in a box.

428 ODM - Not good to hear.

Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at October 31, 2015 01:58 AM (9mTYi)

429 Best airshow moment for ME, ever.

I had the New Dawn at her final berth, at Payco Marina, Slip J-8, in Galveston, TX. Was still living aboard at the time.

There was a Wings Over Texas air show at Sholes Field, the big airport at Galveston. They used to fly B-17s & B-24s out on Naval Patrols from there in WW-II..... not a pumpkin patch of an airport.

Anyway.

The airshow was underway, and a USAF F-15-C was absolutely beating up the field, putting on one of the most aggressive solo-act air shows that I've ever had the pleasure to see.

So, I go and hank-on the boat's 24"x 36" American Flag, and run it up the Mainmast Halyard, instead of the mere 4 ft. taffrail pole.

My boat was berthed maybe one mile to the North of the runway threshold.

The Eagle pilot very obviously saw me hoist the flag, and saluted the boat.

He made a VERY tight 8 or 9 g turn, and flew in at less than 100 ft. AGL, and was very easily near the Mach on the approach.

And then stood the Eagle on it's tail, RIGHT OVER MY FUCKING BOAT, lit the burners and went straight up into the sky, with a full wing-waggle up to over 10k AGL..

And then came down in a dive, pulled up again, right over the boat, and gave the same wing-waggle as before, in salute.

I was screaming. I was HOWLING. I was crying tears of pure adrenaline and joy.

He'd put on a solitary, one man air show, for a solitary, one man salute from a thirty foot sloop.

Y'all ain't gonna fuckin' beat that one, and you never will, not in my books.

I love me some Blue Angles and Thunderbirds.

But I'll buy that Eagle pilot a bottle of whatever he wants, if ever I can find out who he was.

oops, confusing comment - my friend lives just west of Miramar, not El Centro, as my edit ended up implying.

It's also fun during the show if you're driving in areas close to the base aside from my friend's - north of it in Mira Mesa or south in Kearny Mesa - out of nowhere a blue F-18 comes screaming around doing a sharp turn, at very low altitude. Only time you get to see anything like that any more in an inhabited/developed area.

I never really could love those things; kind of an ugly duckling, but that is sure one well-preserved example. To go from the sublime to the ridiculous, yesterday I dragged out an old 36 horse 1100 (?) cc VW engine that I had got in a lot of stuff bought a few years ago. It was stuck. So, with the aid of a floor jack, I raised it 15 inches off the ground, and then grabbed it and grunted, and heaved it up onto my welding table. Didn't bust anything in the gut or spine department, either! Pulled out the wrong spark plugs, shot some penetrating oil into the cylinders, and then bolted a steel bar to the flywheel so I could work it back and forth. What do you know? Inside of 10 minutes, I had it turning freely, and all its little valves go up and down, too, and have "some" clearance at the tappets. I'm going to see if I can make it bark tomorrow.

Maybe because kids today are so cosseted that they can't burn off their excess energy by doing stupid, but normally harmless, stuff because some ninny thinks they might get hurt?

True story: When I was six years old, my Dad brought home an old Lauson one-cylinder engine. All apart, in a box. He said to me, "Here, it's yours. Put it together yourself. Don't hesitate to ask for help." So I did. Took me several days. "OK, Dad, got it all together. What are all these paper things?" "Those are gaskets, son. Help keep oil in, and dirt out. Get the picture?" So, took it all apart again, installed the gaskets. I'd been aware of the importance of the timing marks on the cam gears, so I didn't make that mistake.

We nailed that old engine to a chopping block outside, and I tried to get it to run. I don't think I ever did, because the rings were so shot, it had next to no compression. It would bark and blow smoke, but couldn't make enough jam to keep itself turning. But I learned a lot. And one day, Dad came home, and just about laughed himself silly. Because me and my sister were taking turns hanging onto the spark plug wire, and enjoying the thrill of the electric shock as the other spun the engine with the starter rope.

If kids did that today, cops would be called.

443 One of my great 'toys' as a kid was a Model T spark coil. I still have it. One could conduct lots of interesting experiments with one of those.

With that, I am off to bed.

444 297 274 Chi, I saw your earlier post. Don't need wood though but appreciate the thought. Beer? That's a different story!

No problem, Commander.
Hell - you come help me load it up & split it, I'll buy you all the beer you can drink for a month week.
I don't even know what a cord of oak is worth, to be honest. I'm tempted to bring it home, split it here, then sell it. I'd have to invest in a Harbor Freight logsplitter, but it looks like I'll be doing tree work for the foreseeable future...

If you hear of anyone that needs/wants it this weekend, say so tomorrow night. I'll be back there tomorrow to start another job next door.

Cord of red oak -- 4' x 8' x 4', cut, dried, split, and delivered, is about $170 in the Northeast. I've also heard $250 fall and winter, half that spring and summer.

445 The budget deal/debt ceiling lift includes a reallocation of SS payroll taxes, diverting more to the Disability part. This has gone cash negative for some time, and even with the faux interest, it's way negative and burning the IOUs so fast it would be bust by the end of 2016.

By law, that would mean benefit cuts automatically. So they just reallocated to, on paper, give more payroll money to the DI fund and kick it down the road. But this is at the expense of the Old Age/Survivors part, which brings it detonation closer.

I hope you all understand that when this all blows up, it's gonna be spectacular. Nobody has the balls to do what is necessary to pull out of the death spiral we're in.

Well, I did now....

My uncle seasons firewood on his five acre place in Knoxville. He repurposed one of his outbuildings and has wood stacked crossways. Most of his is green garbage wood, so he seasons it for a year for every inch thick it is -- that's probably way longer than is needed for good oak.

Also remember that using a power log splitter is one of those things that is sooooooo boring and monotonous in the middle of the bell curve, but can be soooooo nasty, dangerous, and unpredictable out on the tails. It's quite tempting to say, "I've only got a little -- and the safety gear is way over there -- and I've done it thousands of times with no problem."

448 Night all.

AoP good luck, sounds fun. If its a 36HP, then a 1200cc. Though there is the 40HP flavour 1200cc with the 77mm pistons and 20mm wrist pins.

450 G'night, Anna.

Cooth, like I said, I'm kinda thinking out loud. I just see the possibility for a few extra dollars, y'know? I could use them.
I don't even know if this will work out - i just met the guy & barely have a few days working with him. And the money is solid so far (this from the Moron that got taken for $3k by the last two contractors i worked for!)
Besides, at almost 50, I don't know how much tree work I can do. It's certainly the most physically demanding work I've done in, well, forever?
Remembering some old skills, learning new ones... I'll find out more over the next few jobs. And tomorrow night.

He seems impressed with me, I'm impressed so far. His current "right hand man" is a boob. 20 years exp & can barely tie a proper knot, much less knows any rigging or the proper way to figure out what tree to use as an anchor...

We plan on spending tomorrow night in the backyard with drinks and a bonfire, and I'll get a better feel.

As to the logsplitter, if I can make a dollar off a season or two, then sell the thing, I'd be happy.

451 good morning cool folks of the HQ. It`s always a treat to read about yalls' experiences in different things. Jim´s bit about the F15 over his boat is absolutely kick ass.
On another topic: anybody eat some good food lately? I´m fucking starving to death over here.

454 I would take a whipping on my bare ass with a wet leather belt for some gyros right about now.

455 Fine denizens of this Blogge, I and England are forever in your debt. Were it not for my regular perusal of your scribblings here, it never would have occurred to me how the dastardly Duchess of Dunham was able to utilize her own sister as the vessel by which to smuggle the Crown Jewels out of Buckingham Palace. Fiendishly clever! The Queens one regret is the lingering bouquet that continues to attach itself to the items in question.

456 fff, was talking to a bartender last week about pizza. Turns out it's easy to make a pretty darn good pizza on your own
Mine was pretty good, for a first try. You get a thing of raw dough from a local pizzeria (yess, they'll sell it to you). Hold it in both hands, let it hang down and rotate it from hand to hand, until it is fairly thin & lay it on the baking pan.

Use a rolling pin to get out the air bubbles. Add toppings.
Preheat to 500 degrees. Bake for 12-14 minutes.
Simple. No more frustration at the smaller and smaller amounts of cheese they've been putting on pizzas as Obama's wreckovery has done its work. My favorite: bacon, asparagus, red onion pizza.

457 There's a suggestion for Charlie Brown's gun control: homemade pizza thrad.

Posted by: Bruce Boehner at October 31, 2015 05:31 AM (jRs7b)

458 We have been making our own pizza mostly for years.
There are lots of dough recipes my favorite has lager beer in it for flavor. Use plain cause, spaghetti sauce makes it taste like spaghetti.
Pizza stone helps get it hotter faster and one difference between commercial and home Is you can't get it as hot as they do.
Good morning horde

460 UK analysis identifies speed camera danger as there is an eleven fold increase in panic breaking[sic] within 50 feet of camera.

Well yeah, shit gets broken when people panic *brake* in front of the cameras.

Heh.
