I ain't paying for some dumbass lefty hypocrite lecture. Rich celebrities don't need to worry about border security because they can buy their own borders - gated communities, private guards, doormen, security cameras and more. I'd like to see the New York Times give up their very restrictive sign in policy so just anybody can walk it and see how they like it. Maybe put up a "Gun Free Zone" sign while they're at it.

At this time of the year in NE, all the leaves on the trees and vines are full of color and we have almost zero light pollution cause island, looks so perfectly Halloweenie particularly on a clear night with a big moon but alas, no kids.

Oh well, have to make a fire in the pit and have an adult beverage or two. Maybe a Snickers or 3.

49 Love the painting. Reminds me of Halloween when I was a kid: dark, probably rather cold, and SCARY so we had to work in little kid packs for protection against the SCARY stuff. Except we had a pillow case with the hope that we would get enough goodies to fill it up. Sometimes we got pretty close. Good and important and innocent times.

51 I was trying to post to the overnight thread, but the whole page reloaded and now I see this one's here, so I'm going to post here.

I have to object to one part of that Heinlein piece posted last night: "One of their favorite quotations is: 'Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.' What they never mention is that the man who made that sneering remark was a fat, gluttonous slob who was pursued all his life by a pathological fear of death."

That was Dr. Samuel Johnson, one of the most brilliant minds of the 18th century. (He wrote the English dictionary.) First of all, why assume his criticism is of patriotism? It's not - he's criticizing scoundrels. And it's true - think of our political scoundrels today, like John McCain. When they're in a tight corner, they pull out the patriotism card. If a jihadi attack blew up part of Washington, DC, wouldn't Obama haul his coward ass in front of the TV cameras to say we're all Americans, let's pull together, blah blah blah. Of course he would. Nowadays, they also pull out the religion card too sometimes, but that wasn't the case in Johnson's time. In any case, he was pointing out that you can tell a scoundrel because of his shamelessness - he'll wrap himself in the flag to save his own skin.

As for being fat and gluttonous, that's true, but that leads to the second point. Johnson was afraid of dying because he was afraid of the judgment of God. He was constantly haunted by fears that he would go to Hell, and it's because he was so conscious of his own sins, gluttony and indolence among them. Johnson was intensely religious. I don't think he was a physical coward at all, but he was hagridden by morality, and never felt he could measure up.

Anyway, I just had to say that, in defence of Dr. Johnson.

61 There is a post on FB going viral about a black guy in a hoodie getting stopped for a headlight out. CC'ing a Glock.

Shot on sight?

Nope...

Lead officer points out my registration card is out of date but he knows my registration is up to date. He goes back to run my license. I know he's got me on at least two infractions. I'm thinking of how to pay them.

Officers return with my Glock in an evidence back, locked and cleared. 'Because you were cool with us and didn't give us grief, I'm just going to leave it at a verbal warning. Get that headlight fixed as soon as possible.'
I smile. 'Thank you, sir.'

I'm a black man wearing a hoodie and strapped. According to certain social movements, I shouldn't be alive right now because the police are allegedly out to kill minorities.
Maybe...just maybe...that notion is bunk.

Maybe if you treat police officers with respect, they will do the same to you.

I read that earlier today. I think these poor fools see the pictures of babies, and assume that is what ALL the refugees are. They refuse to delve further, to see the staging. They refuse to read the reports of German women evicted from housing they have lived in for 10-15 years, in order to make room for a bunch of violent, dissatisfied raping men. They also overlook all the rape. For some reason, the SJW's who object to rape, in all it's newfangled forms (you thought about sex with me, and that's RAPE!!!111) seem blissfully unaware of the actual, violent rape that is perpetrated by these savages-on school children, on the women CLEANING their facilities, and on unfortunate women who are in the wrong place at the wrong time, through absolutely no fault of their own But that rape doesn't matter.

I am altogether sick of Hollyweird and those self righteous jerks shoving their "faith" down my throat.

Bit-O-Honey and peanut butter kisses are my very favorite! And you can only find them in the stores at Halloween so I stock up. I seriously have half a dozen bags of each stashed in my pantry. I figure that will last me till Easter when I can switch over to Cadbury eggs and black jelly beans. I think strategically when it comes to my candy allotments. I plot it out according to the calendar year.

I pretty sure there are flammability standards for pretty much all kids sleepwear. They're probably treated with a flame retardant.

The other day, me and B'Gal were talking about all the fires we'd hear about when we were little from people smoking in bed, which led to those standards too.

(My sisters were 20 and 11 years older than me, respectively) I wore that costume until it didn't fit, which was about six years. I adored it, and I wasn't going to get anything better.

My older brother would take me trick or treating, demanding a quarter of the candy as his cut. As I recall, we would bring in a pillowcase full of candy, and he would immediately take all the chocolate. Jerk.

171 I used to love Halloween a great deal. Diabetes ended the obvious fun of handing out candy, but I liked seeing the neighborhood urchins coming by. But these days the community has a huge indoor party at the center where the kids can trick or treat irregardless of weather or crabby neighbors, so the streets are dead quiet. My folks' neighborhood is going through another down cycle, although they still have a decent amount of beggars coming through.

there is a Gawker article (i know I know) from April 15, 2013 that says

1. Rubio had an affair with a loggyist in Tallahassee, she got pregnant and he paid for an abortion

and

2.Marco Rubio Has Fathered Two Children By a Woman Other Than His Wife. Allegedly Democratic operatives in Florida have heard this story, and believe it. Allegedly Rubio, who is married to a former Miami Dolphins cheerleader, has two children by another, different, former Miami Dolphins cheerleader. It's unclear whether these purported children were born before or after Rubio married his current wife. The children, the rumor goes, live in New York with their mother.

THAT is what Bush operatives mean when they say Rubio is more a Republican John Edwards

The decision Friday by a judge in Krakow could close the case in Polanski's favor, providing the U.S. does not appeal it.

But an appeal -- if successful -- could make an extradition likely, because the new Law and Justice party government to be installed in November has indicated there will be no leniency for Polanski, 83, as it makes a point of applying laws strictly and equally to all.

218 @187 Indeed there must be some truth to what you say.

It's been some years now, but something "new" that I found annoying and, basically, kind of threatening, was kids peering in the open door of the "Great Room" while collecting their bribe, and saying, "Wow, you have a nice house."

What's the point of that? Is this Neighborhood Open House Night? Are you casing the joint? Mom and Dad sent you scouting? Whether your house is nice or not should not be of interest to a 10-year-old.

Once I contrived a kind-of fire pit near the door, tripodded my cauldron, and offered hot mulled wine to the grown-ups. Half were afraid to take it, no shit.
And the year we split bratwursts (note, won't say "brats" in the context), set up the grill, and offered li'l sandwiches for the adults? They were skipping the house, presuming we were having a private party up there. In the front yard, next to the lights-on front door, on a cool drizzly last night of October. Oh yeah. Puthy.

Trudeau government promises to end ban on gay men donating blood

The current situation discriminates automatically against men who have sex with men, said Dr. Hedy Fry, Liberal MP for Vancouver Centre. Its just one more way of saying that theres something wrong with you, said Rebecca Rose, chairperson of the Nova Scotia Rainbow Action Project, in Halifax, regarding the rule. The ban is discriminatory.

The ban has been in place for decades because sexually active gay men are considered to be in a high risk group by Canadian Blood Services (CBS). Mindy Goldman, the medical director of the organizations donor and clinic services, said gay men make up 49 per cent of new HIV cases in Canada.

I don't know if he's my favorite Dracula, but the flat-out CREEPIEST Dracula has to be Klaus Kinski in NOSFERATU. Those rat teeth and long fingernails, and weird little animal noises and movements. That's a Dracula who LOOKS, sounds and MOVES like an undead creature who's hundreds of years old. He's evil yet pitiable at the same time. Great performance by the totally bonkers Kinski.

I have to watch that someday; I've only ever seen the great original with Max Schreck.

BTW, Willem Dafoe played Schreck in the film Shadow Of The Vampire, whose plot was that F.W. Murnau, Nosferatu's director, knew that Schreck was a real vampire and promised him the blood of the leading lady if he would just be in the movie.

There was a time when I had to get frequent blood transfusions. It was always harrowing to have to do the follow-up HIV testing, and testing, and testing. You feel like you have to get the transfusions because you want to stat alive, but then you're in fear that what is keeping you alive might kill you. Anyone would want to endanger the blood supply should be hooked up to an IV Pole every week for a transfusion, and go in for follow-up blood sticks for weeks afterwards, and all the worry in between.

How about worrying more about the patients' feelings? I really don't give two hoots about protecting disease-carrier feelings.

For me, I didn't look bad.

Shadow of the Vampire is super creepy!!!

Very much so. And even more enjoyable if you know the original Nosferatu - there are a couple of scenes where they blend footage from the original into the remake so seamlessly it's nearly impossible to tell the difference.

BTW, the Kino Blu-Ray of Nosferatu has an excellent documentary on the making of the movie, with modern footage of some of the locations, including Orava Castle in Slovakia, which was where the movie's Count Orlok made his home.

351 I quite prefer Halloween as an adult. I was too socially awkward as a kid to have fun and had lame parents so I never had a cool costume.

As a grown up (alleged) I make my own costumes and have quite a bit of fun. One year I went as a samurai and made my own sword out of a mahogany plank, carved with a table saw.

Last year I went as Braveheart -- with a quite good Horde-sourced method of making the breastplate -- and for the first time ever had a girl reach up under my skirt.

So, yay Halloween.

397 The saddest case I heard happened 20 years ago in Pasadena. Four young black kids - 11-14, were at a Halloween party. One of the mothers arrived to drive them home. They said they wanted to walk. It was only a block and it wasnt very late. So she says okay. When she pulls into her driveway, she hears shots fired and drives back looking for the kids. Some gangbangers had driven pass and sprayed them with bullets. All four died with. They were walking with bags of candy and stupid costumes. They were not gang members. Now the guys who did it are kicking back on deathrow and will never be executed b/c of lefties.

But that's not all. Oh no. They had had stacks of sugar cookies in those clear plastic shells with 3 containers of frosting, orange, green, and white - fall colors for DIY cookie decorating.

These had been replaced with red, green and white frostings. I mean who the actual fcuk is decorating Christmas cookies 10 days before Halloween?

Peabody's Improbable History always ended with a parade, with music like Shostakovitch at the circus, and after the elephants, at the very end, was a guy with a broom and a trashcan. Some days here are like that.

Ringling Bros is in town, and that reminds me that 50 years ago, my dad and the other dump truck drivers would knock off early from hauling crushed stone or blacktop, because the circus paid top dollar to truck out all those elephant droppings. You could really clean up on that deal. They were in high demand.

And any others who can manage it. Family lives up near the Canadian border, and say that the Canucks routinely come across for any medical treatment beyond routine preventative stuff. Otherwise they wait forever.

565 560 Story reminds me of the short story Sticks by Karl Edward Wagner, which I highly recommend for a Halloween read.

566 Duh of the day.... Don't watch that Team America clip in earshot of a three year old! Geez, didn't realize he was close enough to hear it. Stupid, stupid, STUPID me!

What a dumb movie that was. It wasn't even really a Halloween movie as there was no Michael Myers in it.

569 White House is announcing we are sending special forces ground troops into both Syria and Iraq. I wonder if they will finally admit that combat operations will be conducted in both countries?

They should get the Muzzies to protest the gay blood people.

Muzzies outrank gays on the PC importance scale.

For sure. I grabbed one almost 27 years ago, and haven't let go yet.

Welll that's the way you bring the budget and spending back into the race

And make it part of your mandate.

Plus and this is important
You put Ryan on notice early

You can't do much more than that while running
But as Prez, yeah

So make them run on your budget

577 >>Don't watch that Team America clip in earshot of a three year old!

Oh dear!
How will you explain his/her language now?

As a toddler, my son picked up "Oh, sh$t!" from me, so every time he said it (in public, of course), I would say, "No, honey that's not the ocean!"

I wish there was a video of the dad getting the news from a Publisher's Clearing House style crew at his front door. With a giant photo of his dead kid instead of a check. And lots of balloons. Because balloons are fun.

579 Years ago, my sister and BIL weren't to see Tim Curry in "The Rocky Horror Show" in Sydney. Apparently he forgot his lines and he said "Bloody hell", or something like that, "I forgotten my lines" and he sat on the edge of the stage and had a smoke until he remembered and went back to the scene. They found it amusing. When I heard about it, I found it sort of horrifying that a professional actor would come out of character in that way during a show.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at October 30, 2015 09:43 AM (No/ki)

Well, Fenelon, I'd take issue with that. It's little incidents like that which give live theater its charm. If the actors were letter-perfect every performance, it had might as well be a movie.

Same thing with live music. Ella Fitzgerald did a famous concert in Berlin, with a big-name orchestra. She was half-way through doing "Mack The Knife" and forget the words. But she never missed the beat or broke out of pitch, and improvised with, "I forget the words to the song" or a similar phrase blended right in until she got to the chorus again. The crowd went wild. I am sure you can find it on Youtube, as there was a record made of the live concert. Highly recommended!

581 Right, because it's a terrible, hateful thing to take reasonable measures to keep HIV out of the blood supply. Fuck Trudeau sideways with an AIDS-infected pineapple. And I'm not even Canadian!

They should just let the gays donate, and then flush the possibly-tainted blood down the toilet back at the lab. Everybody's happy!

582 373 Have fun, Stringer!!

We smuggle goodies into theater all the time. I have one of the purse-type backpacks and they never check it. You should be fine w/a flask.

Best is a Scott eVest. It's got all sorts of pockets. I regularly smuggle two bottles of wine into the movies.

I do buy popcorn.
