Harwood debate prediction status: CONFIRMED

I still can't believe how incredibly awful that was.

1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Thursday, October 29, 2015. On this day in 1618 the English adventurer, writer, and courtier Sir Walter Raleigh was beheaded for conspiring against James I of England in the "Main Plot". He had already been placed in the Tower of London for that but was released so it must not have much of a conspiracy. The actual reason for his execution was to appease the Spanish because his soldiers had ransacked a Spanish settlement in the new world while looking for El Dorado. Raleigh NC is named for him.

71 Seeing reactions this morning reinforces my decision to never watch debates. The candidate who can talk real purty is judged the "winner," even if his amnesty-loving, other-guys-have-worse-attendance-records-than-I-do, Democrat-lite beliefs are anathema to everything I (and, IMO, other rational humans) believe. It's like having a swimsuit competition in a baking contest.

Some fool at the NY Post said Teh Rube was the winner!! last night. Other people are gushing about Krispy Kreme and Cruzer. I wouldn't let any of them visit the White House. They are, in varying degrees, representative of the worst in American politics.

All debates are is an opportunity for the lefties to slag on their opponents. I'm sure more is to come from the teevee talking heads today. There is no substance, no compelling reason to support any of the chumps up there on the stage. And certainly absolutely no reason to allow John Harwood in front of a camera again.

The Homestead at 3218 will feature "a primitive campsite, outdoor pool, climate-controlled accommodation options and indoor/outdoor playground for gay/bisexual men," according to the website. 79 Detroit could solve it's school problem and it's other problems by simply giving a $17,000 voucher to each kid.

People would climb over each other to move into the city so that their kids could get that money. New private schools, from one room operations with 10 kids to 500 student more traditional schools would spring up overnight.

On top of that, homeschoolers would get to keep the money. As long as the kid proves residency and passes the test each year, the parent gets the check. Of course, if the parent is home schooling, it's taxable income.

Let's see if LaShawda and D'wan are out on the street at all hours or at the kitchen table studying to pass that yearly test.

If they don't pass the test, they get one chance at a makeup then a state education advisor spends the voucher on the kid's behalf.

gets a clear glide path.

I'm convinced the GOPe plans it this way.
.
.
.While there might be some truth in that statement, I am not convinced that is what happened. The RNC had no idea Trump and Carson would be so far in the lead at this point when they set up the debates. As far as they were concerned Jeb! would be in front by a comfortable margin when they set up the debate schedule because that's what everyone was telling everyone else.

I am still not sure why they agreed to a debate on CNBC. It defies logic and maybe that's the simple answer; Stupidity.

93 I have never understood why debate moderators should be journalists. Few, if any, are experts on the issues and their job is to get ratings (and promote the Dems). The moderators should be experts in defense, economics, foreign relations, etc... I'd rather see an ex-president or senator up there than any MSM hack. The primaries should have moderators that will ask questions of interest to the primary voters so should have the same general ideology as the candidates. In the general election the moderators can/should be partisan as long as they are represented from both sides and it is acknowledged before the debate, which would eliminate most supposedly neutral journalists. This current "debate" format is farce and should be canned.

I clearly do not have the Massive Brain Power and Political Strategy Chops of, say, Prince Reebus or Rover Boy, but I'm guessing they might think letting the liberal wack-jobs run the debates makes them look Fearless and Strong.

There's no doubt they have been plotting the ascendancy of Heb! for a long, long time. They probably predicted that any debate moderator who attempted to wring substance from him would look like they were kicking a puppy.

And, of course, this meshes perfectly with the Boner/Bitch McConnell/Ryan strategy of handing total power to the Democrats so they wouldn't have to expend any effort at governing, but could just sit back and nibble on the fat.

125 Way back in olden times candidates who were Senators or Representatives used to resign when they decided to campaign for higher office. That did two things, one it assured only serious candidates and two it gave the State they were from the chance to run somebody else while an interim was appointed by the gov to assure the "people" and the State were Represented.

My has that changed now. Candidates never resign. Why should they? The don't represent the people or the State anymore. On the Republican side they Represent the Chamber of Commerce, corrupt cronies, and the Party. Much the same for the Dems except they only represent themselves, the Party, and corrupt cronies while pushing their socialist agenda.

FS, I don't recall either Choom Boy or Lurch being as openly disdainful of their well-paying Senate gigs. The Roob has really set himself apart by -- in essence -- saying "hey, the Senate isn't good enough for me." I'd say that's worthy of kicking anyone's[ butt out of office, especially when he's still grabbing his check. Bet he'll still take that cushy pension, too.

I've never liked the finger-pointing defense, either. Just because someone can fail more miserably than you doesn't qualify you to be a taxpayer-supported flake.

It's too bad Rubio can't be fired, IMO. With an attitude like his, he doesn't deserve to quit.

And yes, I think the same goes for Cruz. People who want to be president should show a little integrity first.

Replacing public schools with vouchers (I'm for it!) is going to require a real cagey oversight detective force. There will be fraud. Storefront churches first. Sad experience: La Stringereuse was part of a federal investigative agency, and when they let out grants for day-care programs, phantom chilluns came out of the woodwork. A lot got popped; law of averages assumes many did not.

Just a cost of doing business, though. When there's public money being handed out, Things Happen. The system as it exists is fraud from stem to stern.

Rubio lost me permanently back when he started saying one thing about amnesty in English-language interviews and something entirely different about amnesty in Spanish-language interviews.

But, that said, the Rube got genuinely awful treatment from Harwood last night, with Harwood repeating a bullshit claim about Rubio's tax proposals that Harwood himself had previously had to correct -- and Rubio then called him on it -- and Harwood denied having made the previous correction! Unbelievable.

Harwood should be fired, and Reince Priebus should be fired for having agreed to allow someone like Harwood to "moderate" a GOP debate. Of course, the system is now so rotten that both of these bad apples will stay put.

Republican presidential hopefuls will need to clear a 2.5 percent average in the polls to secure a place on the main stage at the November 10 debate.

Fox Business says that candidates placement will be determined based on an average of the four most recent national polls conducted through November 4. Those who score 2.5 percent or higher will participate in the prime time 9 p.m. ET debate, while the remaining candidates will take part in a 6 p.m. ET faceoff.

Christie is averaging just 2 percent in the four most recent national polls, with eight days to go until the polling window closes. And he isn't the only one on the bubble: Ohio Gov. John Kasich is averaging exactly a 2.5 percent.

The only simpler part of renewal is that you can do it by mail, don't have to appear in person. And I think ypu don't need to submit the docs anymore (not sure, I can check).
This only applies if your son was older than 16 the last time he got a passport, btw. Otherwise it will be treated as a first time application, basically.

229 "My son's passport expired last year. I went to the post office and they
gave me a long form-Application for US passport. Isn't there any simpler
way to do this if you're just reapplying?"

As I recall the process, if the passport has been allowed to expire, it's not considered reapplication in the eyes of the State Department. Either get the renewal in on time, or apply _de novo_. Those were the only two options.

Also, get ready to be bent over hard on the fees. They have gone up sharply relatively to what they were a few years back.

Yes, if you're in the serf class in 21st century America, you have to pay through the nose to your own government so that it will magnanimously allow you to exercise your right to travel abroad.

They say that all this is in the interests of "security". While at the same time the same government allows tens of millions of individuals, unchecked and without papers, to wander in over the southern borders. It's Dr. Pournelle's "anarcho-tyranny" on display.

I didn't watch because I really don't find political debates informative or worthwhile. The Democrat "debates" are more like infomercials. 255 OT Question-Yes, i could find this out on line, but figured somebody here would know. My son's passport expired last year. I went to the post office and they gave me a long form-Application for US passport. Isn't there any simpler way to do this if you're just reapplying?

Years ago you could get a passport issued right away on an emergency basis if you had a plane ticket. I don't know if that works anymore, but you could get a ticket issued from a friendly travel agent who would let you cancel it.

Barring that, I would never go through the Post Office. You can make an appointment at a Passport Office in your nearest big city and get it handled on an expedited basis.

258 "GDP at 1.5% in Q3."

Remember, after 2013, the GDP calculations were hastily rejiggered in order to artificially add about 2% worth of "intangibles".

So, reckoned under the old system, without that Obama thumb on the positive side of the scale, 1.5% growth would actually mean recessionary territory.

By the way, howdja like Harwood's characterization of the U.S. economy last night as the "strongest in the world"? The guy must have the Kool-Aid shipped to him in 55 gallon drums.

It would if we did it.

Right now, a single welfare mother of 4 gets food stamps, subsidized housing, heating, and other stuff along with her kids getting an education at a public school that doesn't actually teach anything at $19,000 ea.

With my plan, the mother would probably home school the kids, getting $68,000 total. She no longer is on welfare, she has to pay income taxes and she knows that if the kids don't pass the test each year, her income is going to take a big hit.

So, when the kid goes to hang out in the 'hood for awhile, the mother finds him, smacks him upside his head and drags his ghetto ass back to the kitchen table for a little math.

Sounds like a plan.

Posted by: Misanthropic Humanitarian at October 29, 2015 09:05 AM (+c55T)

271 The MSM covering the debate as "news" all hit on Repub in fighting, no mention of the attack questioning, and arguing by moderators, or lies by moderators.

Establishment types from the right seem to have chosen this as Rubio's coming out party, and crowned him the glorious winner. Rubio was solid but definitely seemed scripted. Bush's attack almost seemed like it was a set up, to turn the establishment choice mantle over to Rubio. Rubio at least did well countering Harwood's assault, but he'd join with Ryan and the RINO team to push through amnesty on day two or three.

Most of FOX try really hard to dump Trump, and even Megyn seems to get a visceral joy out of slamming him. Many of these attack are phony and misrepresent what Trump has said, which has been a major disappointment. But Trump himself is still learning to articulate some of his policy papers, that seem heavily borrowed from others like Kudlow.

Cruz should get a bump, but the establishment states that Rubio was the clear winner, case closed, for them. He was handed the "Prime Choice" award by a more unified RINO establishment, as I see it.

Posted by: jwest at October 29, 2015 09:20 AM (Zs4uk

I know exactly what you mean. But, you can't just give out vouchers to every child with a teacher union present. Jindal has been sued by the Louisiana teachers unions. Scott Walker has been sued and recalled by the teachers unions.

I'm not saying school vouchers and school choice is wrong. I'm saying is you have a lot to overcome if state wide or city wide vouchers are ever to be implemented. Thats all.

Somehow I think we are in the same church, but different pews.

325 313 Idiots in Detroit would sell the vouchers and dump the kids in public schools anyway

Posted by: Bigby's Fistful of Dice at October 29, 2015 09:20 AM (NF19W)

There wouldn't be any public schools to dump the kid in.

If the kid didn't pass the yearly test, the state would engage a private school for the kid.

328 Reince Priebus came out to condemn that clusterfck of a debate and said he would "fight" for improvements. Whatever the hell that means.

You just fucking failed to even lie well.

It's your party.
These are your debates.
Either you're willing to run them, or you're not.

I agree with the comment above; this was meant to knock out the ones who were not anointed, and remain chummy with the beltway crowd.

he fucked up again by trusting in MFMers to rise above the 7th grade level, which they refused to do.

The candidates were mostly smart enough to realize that they had a great, ugly target in front of them, dumber then them, more dishonest than them, without any pesky Senate rules to restrict them.

And away they went.

Wouldn't you move to Detroit to get an educational benefit like that for your kids?
Posted by: jwest at October 29, 2015 09:21 AM (Zs4uk)

No, hell no.
I sent my kids to parochial school here in WI.

There is no way in hell I would ever move within the City Limits of Detroit

If this plan was put in place, within 10 years you couldn't afford to live in Detroit.

The free market has a way of sorting things out. Property would continue to rise until an equilibrium was established with other areas without the vouchers. So, if families averaged 3 kids, a comparable area would have household income in the $105,000 range.

332 Cruz should get a bump, but the establishment states that Rubio was the clear winner, case closed, for them. He was handed the "Prime Choice" award by a more unified RINO establishment, as I see it.
Posted by: Illiniwek at October 29, 2015 09:06 AM (1XT+t)I still think Trump will implode at some point, that'll he'll have a 'Bitch, make me a sammich' moment with a female reporter or some such thing. Trump is his own worst enemy. Of course, Trump supporters would be unswayed by anything he says or does, no matter how outrageous or wrongheaded. That isn't true for those who are not Trump supporters. I think Dr. Carson will fade, too. His base consists largely of evangelicals, I think, but goes littlefarther.I'm a Fiorina supporter but don't thinkCarly has the campaign organization to pull it off. In the end, I think it'll come down to Cruz and Rubio: both are well-funded, both are strong retail politicians, and are both scary smart and secretly as cutthroat as it gets.Never undervalue ruthlessness in a candidate.Ruthlessness is Hillary's single greatest asset.

"Strong retail politicians", yes, just what America needs.

Hell I'm not even sure what that term means, but based on Rubio's history, I guess you are saying, "lying back stabbing scumbag."
