Defense Secretary Ash Carter: We Might Be Going Back to Fight in Combat in Iraq Again (and Syria Too)

Obama fails. It's what he does.

Obama has once again proven the long-known wisdom -- of which he was ignorant, and when it was told to him, he jeered at it, because it conflicted with his "new" thinking -- that the surest way to waste men's lives in pointless warfare is to adopt a craven, cowering position and invite aggression.

All hail the Eternal Failure and Bringer of Destruction, Nobel Peace Prize Winner Barack Obama.

They are resorting to Orwellian double-speak to not call it combat, because, of course, Obama declared the end of combat action in Iraq, and Obama is a vain and weak man who mistakes himself for a god.

So they're calling it "direct action on the ground."

Like that soldier who died when entering, um, a hostile non-permissive environment. Totally different from "combat."

An American service member was fatally shot during a U.S. Special Forces raid to rescue 70 hostages--some chained to a wall--in an ISIS compound in central Iraq. The death marks the first U.S. combat death since its withdrawal from Iraq in 2011. And it calls into question President Obama’s repeated promises that "American combat troops are not going to be fighting in Iraq again."

Even after the raid, Pentagon officials, who once insisted there were no American boots on the ground, continued to call the U.S. effort a "train, advise and assist" mission, not a combat one. It marked the latest game of military semantics in a war defined as much by its messaging as by its tactical results.

At a briefing with reporters, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said the U.S. military was "not in an active combat mission" in Iraq. Cook repeatedly called the raid "unique" but refused to say whether the U.S. military had conducted similar mission before this one or whether anyone in the Iraqi government had asked for similar help in the past.

Rather he said Secretary of Defense Ash Carter approved putting U.S. troops in harm's way because the Kurdish forces asked for raid and because both Kurdish and U.S. forces believed hostages had recently been killed; more could die within hours, they feared.

...

To be sure, Special Forces are deployed in combat missions in areas officially considered non-combat areas. But until Thursday, the Obama administration had never suggested that those elite troops were exempt [from] how the U.S. defines it mission in Iraq. But White House spokesman Eric Schultz did just that Thursday, saying there are several unique missions in Iraq: "We have also delineated several types of operations that would be permitted under the President’s directive. That includes the train and advise and assist program. That includes Special Operations forces. That includes humanitarian rescues. And that includes counterterrorism missions."

Maybe Sgt. Joshua Wheeler died in a Workplace Violence Event.

I will briefly remind you all that recourse to elaborate linguistic contortionism on this subject is nothing new for Obama in these matters. It is a time-honored tradition for him.

It was the Obama administration which when it started bombing the blazes out of Libya without Congressional authorization (or asking the Nobel Peace Prize committee), described the process of dropping explosive warheads on soldiers who were shooting back as being not combat in war, but instead as a "time-limited scope-limited military activity". A "kinetic" activity, no less.

Except that, well, the fighting in Libya which the bombing helped kick off has hardly been "time-limited". It is progressing with increasing ugliness and ferocity to this very day. Nor was that fighting "scope-limited". It's spilling over borders, too. It is, however, HIGHLY "kinetic". Give them that point.

143 How badly has Obama failed the world?

Take a look at the South China Sea, and take a look at China's claims and the islands that she is building. What she is claiming is absurd. It would be like, literally, the USA claiming sovereignty of the whole Caribbean, except for 12-mile slices of coastline. It would be like us blocking the Panama Canal to free travel.

The S. China Sea is a major ocean-way for a huge amount of commerce. Not only from the region, and not only from the extended region (like Japan and Australia and S. Korea), but globally. Oil and goods from the mideast and Europe and the Americas. They all pour through that region.

And China wants to block it all. To own it.

Reagan, Clinton, either Bush... heck, even Carter and Ford would have been able - easily - to rally the world, with the possible exception of Russia, to oppose this. Large task forces of ships from every NATO nation, every SEATO nation, and even Mexico and Chile would be there.

China would back down, and rightfully so. What they are demanding is absurd.

But Barack Obama has alienated the whole world. His incompetence is near total... and now the USN, and the USN alone, with a bit of help from Japan, which only pisses China off more, are standing alone.

This could actually turn into a shooting war. With China, one of our largest trade partners as well as a foe that we certainly do not want to have ground combat with.

Why?

Because, as a people, we hired a SCOAMF. We hired Chauncey Gardner as POTUS, and are now surprised that all he knows how to do is grow roses...

The modern updated version of which would have to be enlarged. And which would read,

"Join the military. If you win your battles, watch the gains for which you paid in blood then be casually given away. If you lose your battles due to crazy rules of engagement, expect to be blamed for the failure. Because there ain't no way this President is accepting that he screwed up on anything."

Then, it was the US and its coalition inside Iraq with various insurgents and the Iranians staying low-visibility. Now, it is spread over a couple of countries with many players openly in the field, including an aggressive and hostile Russia.

With Bush a slip up could be fixed with an apology and a check; with Obama a slip-up will be fixed by spreading the war wider and perhaps a direct firing-on with Russia. Could Democrats please tell us about that "Smart Power" stuff again? I like fairy tales.

WHY are they still following orders? This whole "I'm serving my country" shit just doesn't fly anymore.

Today's soldiers aren't serving their country....they're serving an Empire run by elitist/mostly liberal scum who would kill every Christian and Conservative, and likely a lot of whites too if they thought they could get away with it.

A former USN petty officer told me he aborted his naval career and got out after a brutal WESTPAC cruise during the late Carter years. The air conditioning was out of service the entire time, and conditions below decks were absolutely brutal.

I asked if they had something impromptu set up to cool the absolutely critical sectors of the ship internals such as CIC. He said, yes, of course, but unreliably so. If they'd actually had to vigorously maneuver and fight the ship, those jerry-rigged arrangements would have failed almost at once.

Because the Left has used Political Correctness to weed out anyone in the military who WOULD rebel...

There is no freedom of speech in the military... there is no freedom of association.... even things said in private off post and off duty, can and will be used against you PROFESSIONALLY...

It started under Carter... got pruned back under Reagan.... raised its ugly head again during Bush 1.... went on steroids under Clinton.... was INCREASED under Bush 2... and has jumped the shark under Obama.

My Son (US Navy, active duty) was ORDERED not to discuss Gays in the military with Civilians... think on that for a minute...

The Military constantly talks about Following orders... you are penalized if you do not... and it programs you TO follow said orders...

They do not talk about, in even Leadership Classes ( I'm a retired Navy NCO meself) about when it would be OK NOT to follow an order...

Look, would there be some strategic advantage if, instead of playing word games, Obama came out and said, yeah, we will strike ISIS when and where we please, with whatever weapons we choose? Of course there would be. In fact, such a statement, followed up with a few strategic actions, might actually help crumble ISIS, and discourage recruitment. Make those head chopping lunatics look over their shoulder for a U.S. Marine with a sniper rifle. Time wasted on defense, especially against unknowable threats, is time not spent on offense.

But no, we can't have that, because Obama MIGHT receive a SMIDGEON of criticism, especially from the left. we can't ever have that.

331 Actually, the thing that the Army let float away, despite what the headlines say, is NOT a blimp!

It is, technically speaking, merely a "balloon" or "tethered aerostat."

It goes like this:

Things that use aerodynamics to fly -- stuff like airplanes and missiles -- are called "aerodynes."

Things that float due to lighter-than-air gasses are called "aerostats."

Among the category of aerostats, powered aerostats that can be steered are called "dirigibles."

Amongst dirigibles, those with rigid frames and generally filled with hydrogen were called "Zeppelins." Those with soft/malleable frames but which can still be steered and have self-guided power/engines are called "blimps."

However, the thing that floated away DOES NOT HAVE AN ENGINE OR A GUIDANCE SYSTEM. Therefore it is not a blimp.

Going back to the category I purposely left out of the typography, among aerostats, those that AREN'T dirigibles and CAN'T be steered and DON'T have self-guiding power are called "balloons."

Balloons that float around freely are called "untethered balloons."

And balloons that stay tied to the ground are called "tethered balloons."

What the Army lost was in that last category -- an aerostat that is a tethered balloon.

But headlines gotta headline, so everyone is calling it a "blimp," even though that is totally wrong.

Posted by: Soothsayer

the Kurds.

I don't have a frickin' clue why they are doing this.

Their base is cheering on the death of four human beings in Benghazi. They have proven repeatedly that they will ignore all of the human rights abuses and misery, and pretend that they're noble by taking in "refugees". That's it.

And now this. My bet is that the intell is far worse than we've been told. We know that Assad is resurgent, and that Iran is heavily involved, as is Russia. Is there a move to carve up iraq into zones? That might do it.

When Barky slimed into office he screwed Afghanistan up so that there were tons more fatalities there as compared with any time during the Bush years, but not one MSM outlet bothered to cover any of it. Most AMericans thought we had stopped fighting there while fatalities and casualties were breaking records monthly. And all that death was in pursuit of nothing but cutting America down to size, on Barky's part as that was always his main goal.

394 SMFH, never used Final Draft.

What I use for screenplays is Celtx because it automates a lot of the formatting for you. Newer versions are all Cloud, I have an older version that doesn't do the Cloud and it works pretty nicely. Best of all it is free.
https://www.celtx.com/index.html

Scrivener can also do screenwriting, but it is more manual than Celtx. And Scrivener costs $40 to buy. Unless you win NaNoWriMo and get a 50% off coupon.

As for literature, try Syd Field's Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting. See if the library has it. My copy is a revised version from 2005. There are other books out there, but Syd Field's is one usually recommended.

416 Tethered balloons, ok, that reminds me of a true story.

Hot air balloons are a big thing, and Albuquerque is/was the home port. So one of the local balloon guys rented his hot air balloon to a local store for promotional purposes. They were having a big sale and wanted to attract some attention. So they had this guy launch his hot air balloon from the parking lot. It was going to be tethered to keep it over the store.

on a windy day.. . .

ya

they had to close ABQ International airport when the tether broke and the balloon entered restricted airspace. The guy got the balloon down on the airport somewhere. He didn't say where.

Yeah, I wouldn't bet someone else's life on that one. Bergdahl was about getting an excuse to release some guys from Gitmo, and once that was completed and they had the Obama preening in the Rose Garden the military couldn't prosecute Bergdahl - not politically feasible.

Some other random Joe or Jane, one that Obama hasn't spent his time strutting around the Rose Garden about? That poor sad sack is under the bus so fast his ears will bleed from the change in air pressure.

At that time, according to Pillar, the intelligence community judged that Iraq had active programs for development of weapons of mass destruction.
One of the revelations after the invasion and after the inspections began in Iraq was that some of those programs had gone farther than had been believed.
The intelligence community had undershot, if you will, in its assessment of just how far along, especially on the nuclear program, the Iraqis had been".

465 Yes, I don't think we owe them anything. How can you owe someone something when they are a) ingrateful b) openly state how they will be the majority and relish the thought of oppressing you? My response to that would be to kick them all out of the country along with Jeb Bush, Sonjya Sotomeyer, RBG, and anyone else who thinks we owe some moral obligation to illegal scum who want to plunder us, rather than honest citizens.
Posted by: Bruce Boehner

it's not a matter of owing anyone anything at this point.

For several reasons, the situation in Iraq has gone south. Iran is expansive, with reason. Russia is now directly involved. Israel is being isolated. Syria had a civil war, with predictable dire consequences in the power vacuum created amidst the chaos. Turkey is having its own problems, and still no one is willing to deal with the very real aspirations of the Kurds.

The situation is far worse than it was in 2003. And the military is far weaker and its leadership is worse AND hostile to it.

The chances for any sort of success are minimal, and the chances for anything other than casualties and face saving gestures is high.

Hopefully we won't inadvertantly shoot at or be shot at by Russian forces. During the cold war, the left wouldn't stop fretting over the prospect. Now were' blundering into it.

Actually, that is because of the phoney-baloney zero interest rates. A house that is worth 200K at a normal 7.5% 30 year mortgage is worth about 350K with a 3.75% mortgage.

I know that this is part of the funny money you are talking about but it's a bit different since it's not inflationary but directly related to the manipulation of interest rates more than the direct printing of cash (though the two are, themselves, related).

Private Sad Sack here needs to be made an example of to keep others from going AWOL. Sort of like Pvt. Slovik being made an example of.

The tanker is hoisted into the air and is heading straight for a school right in the middle of a blimp-free zone as it's tracked by a heroic tv weatherman trying to reclaim his honor after a disastrous weekend forecast...

Some idiot somewhere in the first news-wave erroneously called this thing a "blimp," and we're off to the races: No amount of corrections, no amount of explanation, can ever erase the false first impression of a news story. We saw it on this very thread. Everyone is susceptible to the "A lie travels around the world seven times before the Truth even finishes lacing up his boots" syndrome.

No one cares that it is not, in fact, a blimp. All that matters is that everyone else is mistakenly calling it a blimp, based on a single mistaken original tweet or headline; the mass social grouping of the error makes joining in on the error literally irresistible, even when you know it's wrong.

Nope. Not even close to being a blimp.

The very definition of what makes a blimp is that it must have its own propulsion source (e.g. engine/propellers) and be steerable. This thing is just a balloon in the shape of what most people think blimps look like.

If you make a balloon into the shape of a guitar, for example, that doesn't make it a guitar. It's just something shaped like a guitar.

639 Blimps are manned, maneuverable, and really do not have any internal framework - the skin and the frame are pretty much one.

Dirigibles, like USS Shenandoah had a rigid metal frame, separate gas sacks, access throughout the hull, a skin placed over the frame that was not gas-tight, were manned and maneuverable. USS Akron and USS Macon were flying aircraft carriers for F9C Sparrowhawk fighters.

643 This is what happens when a thread goes on too long. We start fighting about stupid crap.

Or when it's early on the thread.

Or early in the day.

Or a long afternoon.

Or a slow news day.

Or a busy news day.

Or any day ending in 'y'.

It matters not what the aerial devise is called, but what is important is the wording on the side of the balloon that says, "President Obama For a Third Term."

From Heinlein: (Starship Troopers)

The historians can't seem to settle whether to call this one "The Third Space War" (or the "Fourth"), or whether "The First Interstellar War" fits it better. We just call it "The Bug War" if we call it anything, which we usually don't and in any case the historians date the beginning of "war" after the time I joined my first outfit and ship. Everything up to then and still later were "incidents," "patrols," or "police actions." However, you are just as dead if you buy the farm in an "incident" as you are if you buy it in a declared war."

654 I don't know if this was mentioned upthread but I believe that was MSgt Joshua Wheeler, not Sgt. Please don't demote him.

655 can someone with juice tell Ace to correct the rank of Joshua Wheeler, he was a Master Sergeant (MSG, E-8, not a SGT, E-5 type). Not done with any sort of malicious intent of course, but the guy earned those three extra stripes.

656 Obama will now be able to end the war in Iraq twice!

Posted by: cranston at October 28, 2015 06:05 PM (5TU+k)

657 Okay like the guy said above sometimes even a word that is not technically correct becomes essentially so by common usage over many years. Such is the case with "dirigible", originally an adjective meaning "steerable" and applied to airships, that in contrast to free-floating balloons, were powered by a propulsion device like a propellor and having aerodynamic control surfaces to make steerable. Sort of how we sometimes call a submarine a "submersible".

But dirigibily does not require an internal frame, and thus a blimp is quite rightly "dirigible", but not called A dirigible because the d-word became associated with the large rigid framed airships like the Graf Zeppelin, which came to be genarically named called "Zeppelins". A "Zeppelin" IS a good name for rigid airships, because Count Zeppelin's major innovation was to develop airships with a rigid frame ( he was not the first but this first met with acclaim). So the Graf Zeppelin was NOT a Zeppelin named after a guy named Graf. It was an airship named after Count (a German Graf) Zeppelin, just like the Queen Mary was not a Mary named after someone named Queen.

Anytime, don't mention it.

i doubt if Obama cares, he maintained the fiction of success long enough to get re-elected.
