Morning Thread (10-28-2015)

There's a GOP debate tonight on CNBC, which will likely have more viewers in the first hour than the network gets in an entire quarter. Word is that moderator John Harwood received a new pair of kneepads directly from DNC Headquarters as a gift for this special occasion.

1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Wednesday, October 28, 2015. On this day in 1919 the U.S. Congress passed the Volstead Act over President Woodrow Wilson's veto, paving the way for Prohibition to begin the following January. This was one of the worst laws ever passed in the United States. Vetoing it the first time is probably the only thing Woodrow Wilson got right. The act was passed to give laws to carry out the equally stupid 18th amendment, which was ratified that same year.

2 Northrop Grumman will build the next B-2 bomber which is estimated to cost $80B to replace the existing "aging fleet". Aging huh, we're still flying those old Buffs built in the 50s. Now that's aging.

Gains in the American life span have slowed in recent years, according to a new report, with average annual death rates flattening for the first time since researchers started measuring them in the late 1960s.

Researchers from the American Cancer Society used federal mortality data to analyze trends in longevity from 1969 to 2013. Death rates in the United States have been declining for decades, an effect of improvements in health care, disease management and medical technology and the researchers had expected to find more of the same.

Instead, they stumbled upon a disturbing development. The declines in death rates flattened in the most recent period, from 2010 to 2013, dropping by an average of just 0.4 percent annually, a rate so slight that it was not statistically significant. The rate had slowed in previous periods but never this substantially, researchers said.

Oxford University scientists investigated how comfortable people are being touched. In the largest-ever study on physical contact, they asked nearly 1,500 men and women from Britain, Finland, France, Italy and Russia to color in human body outlines to show which parts they would allow someone to touch, front and back.

Not surprisingly, they found that the more you know someone, the more likely you are to be happy to be touched by him or her. Erogenous zones, however, were out of bounds to all but partners, with one exception. Men indicated they were comfortable with female strangers touching any part of their body, even their genitals.

64 Re Walgreen's and Rite Aid: My town has exactly ONE drugstore -- and no markets or liquor stores, though the locals are all hot to add the latter -- and it's a Rite Aid. There's a Walgreen's in the next city, but that's a bit of a drive if all you want is a bottle of aspirin.

The pharmacists and counter help at the Rite Aid are nice people, all locals. One pharmacist was particularly helpful when the automatic (and traumatic) shift from MassHealth to Medicare popped up and screwed up my 'scrips. The Walgreen's is the usual faceless Big Drugstore. Have only been there twice in five years.

The one good thing about a small town is the up-close-and-personal service you get from whatever retail outlets may be there. I get that from Rite Aid.

So if there's any conflict during the acquisition, you know which side I'll be rooting for.

There has to be a possibility that this is one of those social experiment projects, like Birchers and "Objectivist Summer Camp" used to do, wherein students get a little taste of what life under totalitarianism would be like. Those were widely misunderstood by students, too. It just pissed them off.

Or, maybe face value, and just real totalitarianism. Either way, the girl's "faith was strengthened" by the exercise. Hard to believe any college-trained pedagogist wouldn't see that coming. Further details, guaranteed.

In news CAC used to post, before he joined the Church of Scrantontology:

After a dozen years exploring Saturn and its neighborhood more than a billion miles away, the unmanned spacecraft Cassini is about to fly directly through Enceladus icy jets in a final mission to learn if conditions for life might exist in the ancient salty ocean that scientists say lies beneath the moons frozen crust.

Carolyn Porco, the leader of the Cassini spacecrafts imaging team said that this flyby only 30 miles above the moons surface could mean "an encounter with the most promising place for astrobiology in the entire solar system." Cassini has already flown twice through the frozen vapor jets at higher altitudes, but on this final pass it will speed directly into the curtain of misty ice at 19,000 miles an hour. There was also the unapologetic capitalist, Larry Kudlow, as well as Trish Regan (who has immigrated to FBN). I used to even enjoy Kramer, until he lost all credibility by endorsing Obama. Thankfully, FBN came along...

78 The RNCe is really stupid for holding a debate on MSDNC. Posted by: Vic-we have no party at October 28, 2015 07:15 AM

Fixed it for ya, Vic.

The GOPe has screwed up so totally that on those rare occasions when an admitted "Republican" opens his mouth and says something sensible, pro-America or in support of the law, I tend to think he's lying.

After all, what have we gotten from all the high-and-mighty "conservatism" of, say, teh Cruzer? Nothing. At. All.

But he's made out. He's raised some dough and a few people (not really very many) think he should be the next Preezy. He pulls a regular check, and a pretty decent one, from a job he doesn't bother to do very often.

Add to that the GOPe's fondness for Entitlement Boy Heb!, their visceral fear and hatred of the Dreaded Non-Politician who, at present, is attracting favorable notice from a fairly sizable percentage of the public, and their willingness to bunk with the Democrats on every issue of importance, and you have a party that is ripe for being sent off to the knacker's yard and turned into dog food.

On my way home yesterday, I was listening to Howie Carr (local MA talk host). In his bumper, he had a clip of some MFM asshole asking Teh Donald, "imagine a man comes up to you and says I came here illegaly 20 years ago and started out picking fruit. Now I'm the foreman of a company and have a family and make good money. Are you really going to deport me?"

Trump whiffed, saying "I'm not going to answer that," which, IMO, is a YUUGE mistake. He could have slammed that out of the park, as Candidate Poppins would have:

"I'd say to him, 'you mean to tell me you've been here for 20 years, profiting off our generosity, and not ONCE in all that time did you lift one finger to even TRY to become a legal citizen? Goddam right I'm deporting your ass and your whole filthy brood with it!"

If a retiree, age 67, who has been working since 18 and making the median income for each year was in a private retirement account using the S&P index and taking all crashes into account, he would have 1.9 million in an account.

At 3%, he could draw $4700/month and still leave the entire 1.9 million to his heirs.

If he had a working wife, double it.

At some point, republicans should bring facts like this up.

127 "I have lived by this sentence."

By Dr. Joseph R. Sizoo-Former President of New Brunswick Theological Seminary-
quoted in "How To Stop Worrying and Start Living."

Years ago in a day of uncertainty and disillusionment when my while life seemed overwhelmed by forces beyond my control, one morning I casually opened my New Testament and my eyes feel upon this sentence:. "He that sent me is with me-the Father hath not left me alone." My life has never been the same since that hour. Everything for me has been different after that. I suppose that a day has not passed when I have not repeated it to myself. Many have come to me for counseling during those years and I have always sent them away with this sustaining sentence. Ever since that hour when my eyes fell upon it, I have lived in this sentence. I have walked with it and found in it my peace and strength. To me it is the very essence of religion. It lies at the rock bottom of everything that makes life worth living. It is the Golden Text of my life.

Posted by: Kreplach at October 28, 2015 08:02 AM (2yquu)

No, it has not always been a welfare program. When it was originally approved you could not draw SS unless you had worked and paid into the system for at least three quarters. My mother never got to draw a dime of SS because she got married after two quarters worth and never met the three quarter requirement.
The Democrats changed that back in the 60s when they removed the requirement to have paid into the system. Now their goad in creeping socialism is to remove the lower limits on payouts for those he get low amounts due to low wages or no wages and to also make it a "means tested" benefit. Which their definition of rich people would get nothing. They have already got a carve out for people who retired with good savings and who have their own sources of income other than SS (and I am subject to that carve out and am not rich at all).

So it didn't start as a welfare program but since LBJ and his Democrat congress they are sure making it that way now.

My M-I-L and her now deceased sister both had very bad reactions to generic Synthroid (thyroid hormone). M-I-L lost close to 20 pounds (she's about to be 90 y.o. and only ~4'10") and was just feeling tired and rundown. Wife and I were really getting worried. The use of generics is pushed hard by the MA "health"care system as well. My doctor -- an assembly-line type who gives patients 15 minutes and spends most of it staring at the computer screen -- routinely goes for them.

So far, I haven't had any problems with generics; most of the time, they are fine for most people. But I know there are instances when they are either ineffective or downright harmful for some people. Doctors need to pay attention to that, and should be allowed to change the Rx whenever it occurs.

I'm willing to bet Choom Boy and members of Congress get the full-price Big Name drugs whenever they want.

177 Somebody sent me a link to some atheist musician yapping on about how much moral countries with high rates of atheism. He cited 5 countries: Sweden, Netherlands, Australia, Canada and Germany. Then some statistics that show they are more prosperous, less crime, higher gender equality not to mention wonderful things like free education, health care and of course gay marriage and abortion.

Of course we have all seen this type of thing. What really stands out is the inability to distinguish correlation from causation, especially from this "I F*ing Love Science types. Not to mention all the statistics on prosperity and happiness are dubious to say the least. I'm sure these countries probably all have high rates of atheism and are more prosperous than most other countries that could there be something else a play here? Let's see, Hmmmm,... no, absolutely nothing in common in those 5 countries beyond their atheism.

Reading the comments of course plenty of America and religion bashing and "aren't we wonderful and enlightened" but one stuck out from the crowd. Some young lady dared to point out that massive Muslim immigration was occurring in those countries and it would not be good for the secular humanist ideal. She had even heard somewhere some of the immigrants were not only very religious but might have beliefs that were not at all in line with the progressive ideal and destabilize these liberal Utopias. Surprisingly she was not shouted down and even got some support but the topic quickly returned to how much horrible and stupid Christians are. Still, a small ray insight in a vast pit of liberal ignorance.

One of the best things about Trump -- I am a supporter, but not a fan, if that makes any sense -- is that the people who despise him are enveloped in the stench of fear. It is inevitable that at some point (maybe not '16, but soon) that an outsider will come along who points out the horrid mess Real Politicians have made of our government, and convinces the public he will clean it up.

It goes beyond political party: as the Democrats recoil in horror that someone who is Not a Member of the Club might take power, so do the GOPe types and the alleged "conservative" media. Their livelihoods -- from cushy Congressional seats to a fat commenter's gig among the Salem Witches -- are at risk.

So yes, the Game of Politics crowd will be all-in for destroying Trump and Carson. By any means necessary. If either candidate wins, they may well be out of a job.

A lovely thing to watch!

The little guy not only has no representation, but is in fact subject to the whims ever more totalitarian State. Fear is a normal and understandable response to this condition.

Theory was that they could then track down firearms used in crimes by recovered and compared casings.

Obama polls the Democratic Money Bags. "What about Joe Biden instead of Hillary?"
Democratic Money Bags - "But Joe Biden is a paste-eating moron!"
Obama - "Yes but he has agreed to allow Valerie to keep her office so having Joe would be just like having me.
Democratic Money Bags - Thirty seconds of silent stare then "But Joe Biden is a paste-eating moron!"

"Valerie, the Bags are not buying it."
"No worries, have Joe pretend to bow out. We turn the screws on that bitch. Have the NSA trot out e-mails that show she was taking donations for decisions at State. Pretend the FBI recovered them off her server. Just before Iowa, have Lynch announce prosecution. Then Joe can jump in "For the good of the Country". We will have Sanders and O'Malley drop out and throw there support behind Joe. The Primaries will be a foregone conclusion and we can save all the money for the General Election. Besides, the less we have Joe making speeches, the fewer opportunities for the country to realize he is a Paste-eating Moron."

either staying here in Pennsylvania or moving to North Carolina.
Neither state taxes ss.

Posted by: se pa moron at October 28, 2015 08:45 AM (sI4OA)

SC taxes are based on your federal taxable income. So if SS was taxable on your federal form it will be taxable in SC, but

OK here's the deal

I pulled up the instructions from their web site. Last year I got a $5K deduction for SS which left some still taxable because I was under 65. This year (tax year 2014) because I was over 65 I got a $10K deduction for SS which totally eliminated my SS taxable income. So none was taxable. This happens because not all your SS is taxable on the federal form.

Yes, it gets complicated.

So in the end if you are under 65 you will be taxed on some. If you are over 65 you most likely will not be (I am receiving maximum SS benefit per the SS lady because I paid in so much.

This goes hand in hand with the BLM story about that agency illegally selling thousands of wild horses for slaughter.

The government and arms of the government, now have the sense that in an oligarchy, there is no cause for accountability - they answer to no one. Republicans in congress are every bit as guilty as Dems for permitting this rapid evolution away from representative government.

So a black girl just slammed on the ground and it's national news.

No agenda there.

Antiquated concept that is.

Yep and
My wife is waiting to start drawing hers because she doesn't need it now and she will get paid more if she waits. I told her that calculations show that unless you live forever you will never recoup the amount you would have got if started early.

Here's another rub, because I paid in the max for decades, contrary to what some Morons say, I will NEVER get back the amount that was paid by both me and my employer.

It's probably not a good idea to combine dueling experience with legislative immunity.

Maybe not exactly never, but if she took the money, bought some safe stock every month that paid dividends, then almost certainly never.

Then worse case is there's more money and stock to pass down to kids and grandkids. Tax free. SS stops with death.

I hope you can get her to reconsider.

She should have been.

My prediction: Shaqueenwa will get a huge settlement (and probably a 'scholarship' from some left wingers), blow it on drugs and weaves, and end up in jail or on welfare.

I recently got the approval letter from ss. It listed my 'contributions' and my employer 'contributions'. Adding the two together I'll get it all back in seven years or less. Of course it will never have the value of the money I 'contributed' when I first started working. Nor interest on that money.

probably not a chance, not worth the arguments. I already tried once.
BTW overall SC State taxes are pretty low. The income tax is more of a nuisance than a hardship. The local and county taxes are where you get the aggravating taxes. So look at which county you are considering moving to. My county is fairly high, adjoining counties are low. Counties along the beach, particularly down around Charleston are through the roof.

Damn, that's a shame. If she took the money, bought multiple shares of a 'safe stock' like Verizon every month (under $45 a share last time I checked), reinvested the dividends, she'd be so far ahead of the game as opposed to waiting years for a higher payout it's not even funny.

And it's safely in your hands under your control, not in some phony lock box. I sold my wife early.

I get about three invitations a week for free dinners out by investment firms eager to point this stuff out to people.

She took the money from her retirement stock payout from the company and invested it with a "financial adviser" in a mutual fund. The stock was paying a 6% dividend and it was blue-chip safe as hell. She is making peanuts now.

But that is even better than the time she and her mother went to a seminar on "investing" and bought $2K worth of shares in a mutual fund he controlled. I knew nothing about it until she brought me a massive folder while I was doing income tax. The guy was a con artist who was churning stocks and charging her a fee for every transaction.

I did some research and found out this guy had already been convicted of fraud and had no license. I told her to call this guy up sell her shares for whatever she could get and get the fuck out and never do this shit again without talking to me first.

And her "last" investment was somewhat w/o my knowledge. But again she has learned I hope. She would be drawing more money on those dividends if she had left it alone. Heavens I hope she has learned because when I croak she will get her hands on a massive amount of stock.

306 If Harwood really has no business moderating a GOP debate...he doesnt...then it is incumbent on the GOP candidates to offer rhetorical pushback on him & slam his head into the sidewalk everytime he brings the lib partisan commie garbage.

Stop the debate in its tracks & tear the guy apart right on the air in real time.

Unless and until the GOP Fauntleroys are able and willing to do this...ie calling out lib bias on the air as it happens and demanding that it stop while at the same time embarrassing the shit out of the lib reporter...I have zero sympathy for whoever they allow themselves to get saddled with as debate mods. They don't call it the Stupid Party for nothing.
