Good Morning Morons. Today is Sunday, October 25, 2015. On this day in 1854 the Light Brigade charged at the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War. Those of you who had English literature in school should remember this from the poem by Tennyson. Also immortalized in a 1936 movie of the same name by Errol Flynn.

The Golden gate bridge may not survive a major quake. But on the other side of the bay, the Golden Bears have taken dramatic steps to protect their stadium. They're cutting it in half. When the work is finished, the stadium will rest on separate free-floating blocks of concrete, so if a quake hits, the whole stadium will roll with the punches. One side of the stadium is going to be a completely separate structure from other, and the two sides can move independently, even in a large earthquake. The two sides of the stadium are just going to move their separate paths, thereby there will be much less destruction. The job is going to take two years to complete. It'll cost the Bears a cool $320 million to carry out.So when the big one hits there's one place in the Bay Area that Roland thinks will be more than ready. According to him, the work that's been done on the stadium right now, it is going to be one of the safest places to be in the next large earthquake.

Yeah Vic, I was just reading some of the comments on the LA times story and it's crazy. I think you're right. They took political advantage of having Obama in office and doling out Federal monies. It boggles the mind how they could factor saving energy and surely not saving money on such a project. It would never, ever pay for itself and would require a huge budget to maintain, much less when the earthquakes happen, it will be interrupted for repairs AND how many people go from SF to LA? Really? Why don't they propose a underwater tunnel to Hawaii?

This new line they are building will never make a nickle despite the "law" that enabled its funding says that there can be no subsidies and it must make money. Heh heh... here's the best comment on the train I've found:
Who is going to ride this train? It would take more than the current US population (340+ million people) each paying $200 per ticket to break even at $68 billion. I don't think that the system will cost zero dollars to operate, and I don't think that there is an existing transportation system that can handle 340 million people over its mechanical lifetime. It is a farce to think that shuttling people between San Francisco and Los Angeles would be even remotely worth the $68 billion cost, which could easily more than double. And they whined and cried about the "bridge to nowhere", this is the train nobody needs. Anybody who thinks this is a good idea is a complete idiot Million vs a Billion. A million seconds.. 11 days. A billion seconds ... 32 years ... and a trillion seconds... known existence of mankind. Heh Posted by: Yip at October 25, 2015 06:39 AM (e7T6D) 41
Even if that train was built on a stable plane no one will still ride the thing. The only part of Amtrak that is close to even is the New York to Washington route.

Over at Drudge, on the right column, read about Democrat corruption and the selling of wild horses to a guy in Colorado who has connections. BLM allowed him to purchase almost 1800 horses from 2009 - 2012 and he turned around and shipped them to slaterhouses in Mexico. He paid $10/horse. The Govt spent $140K shipping the horses to him... and he made $154K in profits selling them.
It is expressly forbidden to buy from BLM for slaughter. Been the law forever. So he breaks the law. Seemingly BLM never asked what he was doing with 1800 horses over 3 years.... and no charges are being brought, no penalties and no one at BLM is in trouble. Nice, huh? Here in No. Ill, a 20 year old man tried to get on a school bus. He is in jail, for now, but the solution is to split up the bus stop so the kids don't have to walk by his house. You don't actually think that it really cost $68B to build a track between SF and LA do you? The transcontinental railroad cost just $50M to build from St Louis to SF in 1863 which by government inflation numbers would be just under $1B in 2014 dollars.
Most of that money is going into graft and corruption. Posted by: Vic-we have no party at October 25, 2015 06:58 AM (t2KH5) 47

Trump was right, although they are a small percentage of the population they are committing a very large portion of the violent crimes.
___________________________ It's not just the media; it's also the government. And they've been doing this for years. There are all sorts of federal laws and regulations that forbid government workers from asking about an applicant's "immigration status" when somebody is applying for various types of welfare. The only reason for that is to prevent the compilation of stats on how many illegal aliens are receiving public welfare money. There are similar laws and regs that say you can't ask somebody's "immigration status" when you're, for example, giving them "free" (i.e. taxpayer funded) medical care in an ER, or when you're providing them with a "free" (i.e. taxpayer funded) lawyer after they've been charged with a crime or a DUI, etc. Again, the only reason for these prohibitions is to keep the American public from knowing how much of their money is being pissed away by their government on providing "free" services to illegal aliens. It's the same with crime stats. You're not supposed to ask about defendants' "immigration status" because we can't have John and Jane Taxpayer knowing how many illegal alien scumbags are committing crimes in their neighborhoods. And the media have taken it upon themselves not to report on criminals' "immigration status" so instead of reporting that an illegal alien raped and murdered that kid down the street, they simply say that "a Colorado man" was arrested for the crime, or that police are searching for "a man from Texas" in connection with the crime, or some other such nonsense. But despite all the best efforts of our government/media cabal, we've still been able to discover some facts about illegal alien crime. For example, the state of Florida reports that 40% of the defendants who are convicted of murder in Florida are illegal aliens. Illegal aliens make up only about 6-7% of Florida's overall population, yet they're committing 40% of the murders there. But the media, and Dim politicians, continually insist that "immigrants" are more law abiding than U.S. citizens! And then these idiots wonder why somebody like Donald Trump can get so much public support for simply saying what much of the American public already knows: that our government, and our media, are lying through their teeth about illegal alien crime (and the enormous amount of public welfare spending on illegal aliens), and have been for years. the thing. The only part of Amtrak that is close to even is the New York to Washington route. . . .The North East Corridor actually turns a small profit. Conditions in New England down through Philly and DC are exactly what commuter trains are good at handling. Dense populations concentrated along the coast equals $$$ for mass transit. Vic, a lot of that money is graft and payoffs to unions, surely, but too... 22 MILES of tunneling.... in a freaking earthquake zone... heh. 22 MILES. And the article says they want two tunnels, one for each way, so that's at least 44 miles. It's a huge mess and hopefully, when Trump is elected, he can kill their Federal subsidy, and once that's done, the project would die. I can dream, right?
Posted by: Yip at October 25, 2015 07:13 AM (e7T6D) 52
If they're tunneling through mountains that's where most of the big bucks are going. I personally hate going through tunnels. The Chesapeake Bay bridge tunnel gives me the willies. The Pennsylvania turnpike has a few. I get white knuckles driving through them. They're not wide enough and you have tractor trailers coming at you, inches away, at 45 plus mph.
Maybe a fast train would be less unpleasant, maybe the thought of traveling a 100 plus mph, in the dark, through a mountain will be keep the ridership to just a handful. Posted by: se pa moron at October 25, 2015 07:14 AM (sI4OA) 53

Maybe we should just take boatloads of our illegals and just drop them off on the coast of England or France. They can send free money home from there just as well as from here, and they could certainly compete favorably in the job market with Syrians, if they were inclined to get a job. Plus, they are mostly non-Muslim, which I think a lot of Europeans would really welcome at this point. It probably would be a net savings for us, given that we would only have to deport them once or twice instead of ten times per person.

Posted by: Yip at October 25, 2015 07:31 AM (e7T6D) I posted yesterday, 85% of the so-called stimulus went to solid blue Democrat States and mostly to downtown urban cities with majority black populations. That was why it was such a failure. Not only was it a waste just like FDRs boondoggles, but we didn't even get any infrastructure out of it. They could have went out behind the WH and burned the money and got the same impact. It would just be that a bunch of Obama's best friends who his sons would look like would not have got to pocket a wad of money. Posted by: Vic-we have no party at October 25, 2015 07:35 AM (t2KH5) 76

For your Sunday viewing. Amazon is free streaming the first two episodes of its Man in the High Castle video series this weekend. Based on the Philip K. Dick novel, Man in the High Castle depicts an alternate timeline in which the Axis Powers defeated the Allies during the Second World War. The United States is invaded and divided up: Germany gets the east coast up to the Rockies, while the Japanese get the western coast. In the pilot, we watched as Juliana Crain received a mysterious film reel that sent her into the Neutral Zone. On the other side of the country, Joe Blake began to drive across the country on a mission for the tattered resistance movement. The first episode was released earlier in the year, but the second is brand spanking. Posted by: Laurie David's Cervix at October 25, 2015 07:47 AM (kdS6q) 91

Iowa goes first because the RNCe wants to stick a stake through the heart of any real conservative candidate. Iowa - blue State, NH blue State - SC red state. But we have to split SC delegates between candidates. Same for Iowa and NH but they don't have any delegates to speak of anyway. But if a conservative candidate loses Iowa and NH before making it to SC with split delegates (and a favorite son this time) that candidate is likely to drop out. Okay, who has read "Infinite Jest," the Defining Novel of The Age?
Just asking. It's about 1000 pages, the same length as Atlas Shrugged. Some people just don't like big books. It's a cultural thing. Others claim to have read all of "Kapital" (they lie), or claim to read all of the Bible every year. All of it, including The Begats. And some say Dostoyevsky is their fav"ou"rite. But they just can't manage Atlas Shrugged. Uh-huh. The Protestants cheat. They leave out the middle book. Well, that's apocryphal. Posted by: Stringer Davis at October 25, 2015 08:37 AM (xq1UY) 151
Vic,
I read at The Right Scoop that closing GITMO was one reason he vetoed defense bill. I'd put up a better fight with zero than Boner & McConnell & I'm lucky if I weigh 95 pounds. What I lack in weight I make up in bully. I know they're following chamber of commerce platform & are FOS promises. I know most of what he's done is illegal.but AA & that word would be used if they tried to stop him. Media made him & hides everything about him. Buffalo Bills in London in about an hour.
Meanwhile, back in the States, we have one more week of Daylight Saving Time. Next Sunday the sun rises at 6:29, and I'll still be at work before it is. By December 21, sunrise is back to 7:19. At least the weather is decent here for Halloween, so I can say goodbye to Mr Sun with a good long walk. Posted by: Spellcheck at October 25, 2015 08:38 AM (j+aWk) 153

When in Amsterdam, stay at the Manor Hotel on Linnaeusstraat. The tram runs right past the front door, the interior decoration is psychadelic, and Theo van Gogh was murdered just down the street.
Get a bus/tram pass for the time you intend to be in Amsterdam. They're just too handy. Try the beer here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brouwerij_%27t_IJ IIRC, there are a bunch of touristic bars around Rembrantplaatz. Couldn't be bothered with the sex shows, so you're on your own there. Good luck. Posted by: Patrick Carroll at October 25, 2015 08:42 AM (hoUpO) 156
Votermom,
I take that one & think my BP is fine but doctors office is att least an hour away & I can't find a doctor near me. If I go early & sit at takeout restaurant across the street my BP is perfect. Ronald Reagan movie is on TCM. I'm going to go in living room & watch it & hopefully fall back asleep. I hope everyone has a good day. Posted by: Carol at October 25, 2015 08:45 AM (sj3Ax) 157

Good morning.
I just got back from Walmart. Forgot to get bacon on Friday...Twas nice there at this hour. We've had 3 inches of rain and will get about that more before the storm is over. Most of it has been very gentle rain. Just perfect after 2 months of no rain! Posted by: Mama AJ at October 25, 2015 08:51 AM (nXeSu) 165

Spellcheck, envy. We had one, founded during the Late Unpleasantness when the road past it was a canal. Got urban-renoodled about 15 years ago, and a handsome weed-strewn vacant lot now marks the location. Strong men still weep when they think about missing that close-out sale. Many cool do-dads in my home interior are made of wood from that yard.
Speaking of strong men weeping, Subic! They tell me you could really get blown at the end of those runways... Posted by: Stringer Davis at October 25, 2015 08:54 AM (xq1UY) 169
I was on base the other day, waiting for someone, just sitting in a park on a beautiful fall day.
Of course it was about 2 blocks from the flight line so it got really noisy and really smelly. I have B-52s that fly over here all the time, so the noise didn't bother me much, but the smell... Posted by: Mama AJ at October 25, 2015 08:54 AM (nXeSu) 170

Whilst motor cycling on Old Thirty west of Omaha, I got buzzed and coal-rolled by a B-52. Got to see, up close and personal, just how far those wings flex when they put the balls to the wall. One of my fondest open-road memories.
And yes, you can definitely smell raw JP. For a long time. But my dad worked 30 years dispatching fuel oil tankers, so I always felt that's what fathers smelled like. Posted by: Stringer Davis at October 25, 2015 09:04 AM (xq1UY) 173
FOOTBALL ANNOUNCER VOICE: Bears running back Jerome Anderson takes the handoff and busts it up the middle. He breaks into the open...He's at the 35...He's at the 40...He's at the 45...annnnnnd...he disappears into a deep crevasse at midfield. The officials are spotting the ball at the eastern edge of the crevasse. Replacement running back Terrance Watters is jogging onto the field. Watters has been used only sparingly this season but something tells me he's going to see a lot more action from here on out.

I've read Atlas Shrugged 1 1/2 times (abandoned at Galt's Gulch). Years ago, and the I started it again in 2011. I was amazed at how similar it was to the current progressives and Obama admin - really freaked me out. Really wish it had been edited down, because she really nailed their mindset and how it is so, so wrong.

Nobody reads Cabell anymore because satire means nothing these days! As someone who lives in her own little space/time oubliette I can relate to Cabell's arch prose and fantasy realms. For Cabell, veracity was "the one unpardonable sin, not merely against art, but against human welfare." Posted by: All Hail Eris, self-aware douchebag at October 25, 2015 09:31 AM (jR7Wy) 177

What can you expense? Well, there's the story of the guy who traveled to Texas on business. While he was there he bought a cowboy hat, which he put on his expense report. Because of the cowboy hat, his boss rejected the expense report. The guy re-filed it with the note "The cowboy hat is in there; find it."
