EMT 10/24/15 [krakatoa] Just one meal: Amsterdam

Heading to the land of nethers in a couple days on business. Should be there the better part of the week.

Any tips on places to eat, or sights to see in Amsterdam?

I'll be staying just a short distance from several museums including one with a huge Van Gogh collection. Figure that will be a good start.

Oh, how fun.
Last I was there (a long time ago), the Van Gogh museum was closed for renovations. I was so sad. It was ironic, that it was the one thing I wanted to see most of all, and I left the US to see it, and the works were being shown in the US while the renovations were going on.

What I remember most are the delicacies. Chocolate and pastries. oh yum

Spent a lot of my time in and out of galleries along all of the waterways and bridges. Pretty city when I was there. I bought one of my - still to this day - favorite paintings in one of the galleries.

Hit one of the pot bars, just to see. Now they are called "cafes" and coffee shops. I was young... it was in the guide book. So was the Red Light District, which I think they cleaned up, or closed? I walked through it, but would never again. During the daylight hours tho. With a man.

Also rented a car and drove out to other areas to see windmills and so forth. Quaint at the time.

Very fun, small country.

A Breitbart meetup in Arizona ended with a restaurant cutting off the microphone before a police helicopter strangely descended upon the gathering ordering attendees to disperse.

The second event, held in Phoenix on Wednesday night, featured Breitbart's Brandon Darby discussing border issues and AWR Hawkins discussing gun rights. A 14-year old girl could be charged with assault and battery after she threw a baby carrot at one of her former teachers. School disciplinary documents allege a baby carrot was used as a weapon in an assault and battery of a Moody Middle School teacher. The girl has already been suspended for a month.

If its a soft carrot, it may not be as offensive, said CBS 6 legal expert Todd Stone. But if its a raw carrot, you dont have to have an injury or show you were hurt to prove a battery. It just has to be an offensive, vindictive touch. Thats what the law says.

http://wtvr.com/2015/10/22/baby-carrot-assault-charge/

Of course, if the carrot is glazed, then it becomes an assault vegetable and it's use in the commission of a crime is considered a special circumstance.

100 BREITBART MEETUP ENDS WITH POLICE CHOPPER OVERHEAD

A Breitbart meetup in Arizona ended with a restaurant cutting off the microphone before a police helicopter strangely descended upon the gathering ordering attendees to disperse.

Folks are still rapid posting over there about this.

Of course, it was brought up, that "why hasn't this happened to the Black Lives BS calling out to kill cops. Where were ther helicopters, mic cuts, spotlights then? Telling them to disperse... Our country is so horrible right now.

Because one person called to complain. One person was offended. One person. How many calls would it take for the police to respond to the Black Live Terrorists?

here's the link

The name of the shitty restaurant is K O'Donnell's in Scottsdale. Spread the word. They hosted a Breitbart meet-up, which was peaceful and respectful. People were calmly discussing the constitution, another customer overheard and was "offended" (probably by the mention of the constitution, which is like water to bad witches for some people). This offended hot-house flower complained to the management, who then cut the mic the Breitbart group was using, and called police and claimed (falsely) that the Breitbart crowd was unruly and threatening.

Boycott K O'Donnell's. They deserve it.

A tragic incident at work yesterday was barely avoided after I lost my grip on a baby carrot while snacking at my desk.

Back in the early days, I was blessed to be a VP at a privately held corporation owned by an idiot. After reading an article about how European executives trick their U.S. counterparts by getting them into meetings right off the plane, while they were tired and jet lagged, our owner declared that no business would be conducted until we've spent a minimum of 48 hours in country.

Since our largest customer was in Sweden, we would fly into Amsterdam and stay there for a few days relaxing.

The junior suites at the Amstel Intercontinental were great. Right on the Amstel river, great views and just a short walk to the Centrum. Excellent restaurant too.

If you get to splurge, they send the hotel Rolls to the airport to pick you up.

________________

It wasn't the police who were at fault in the Scottsdale incident. In fact, the police behaved pretty well. Some of them even apologized to the Breitbart group, who had done absolutely nothing wrong.

The people at fault were the idiot management at K O'Donnell's Sports Bar and Grill in Scottsdale, AZ. They are the people who harassed the Breitbart group, shut off their mic, and phoned the police to report that the group was hostile and threatening (which was nothing but a big, fat, ugly lie).

The Breitbart group was doing nothing more than having a calm, reasoned group discussion about the challenges the country is currently facing from the lawless administration. Another customer in the restaurant, undoubtedly some Obama-worshipping loon, overheard the discussion and was "offended" (naturally, since all Obamaites worship at the Church of the Perpetually Offended). That's when management cut the Breitbart group's mic, and called the police and lied, in a fascist attempt to get the group thrown out of their restaurant (even though they had earlier welcomed the group and even posted welcome signs).

Must visit is De Dries Fleschjes. It's a bar in the old center of town and one of the oldest bars in Amsterdam. It features a wall of wooden casks filled with the liquor preferenceof the person or company which owns the cask. One cask was always filled for members of the 32nd Tactical Fighter Wing at Soesterberg Air Baseand paid for by the Queen. Do not pick up the glass for your first drink. Bend over and sip down so the drink it will not be spilled as by tradition the bartenders overfilled the glasses. One who picks up his drink before first sipping will elicit ohh and ahhs from the regulars. Very few tourists. Wonderful people. Oh yes, highly recommend the drink, "Walk in the Woods." 169 Amsterdam recommendations...

The Anne Frank Museum. It's essentially self-guided. Take the time to do it and reflect. And when you stand at the window to look into the garden, the magnitude of the place hits home. It's history like you've never experienced.

The Van Gogh Museum. No matter how many times you've seen his work reproduced, it will never match seeing the real thing. His use of color, especially yellows and golds are stunning up close. It's almost akin to gold leaf. Very much worth a few hours.

Dress warm. It gets bitter cold and damp.

Don't eat any halal food from a street cart. You'll be sicker than a dog, because I swear it's cat.

Handicapped parking signs are posted in one space, but tell you in Dutch that it applies to two or three parking spaces. In other words, it's not like the US where each spot is marked. I learned the hard way with a $200 ticket and $200 towing fee, not to mention a $50 cab ride to the auto pound.

Yes, you'll check out the red light district just to see it. The farther you go in, the worse it gets. It's goes from cosmopolitan to very dicey and dangerous, with narrow alleys and swarthy types looking to take you off. From models to meth heads in the course of a few blocks.

Remember, hash and pot are served at bars, like the infamous Banana Bar. If you're at risk of drug testing at work, you may want to avoid because of passive ingestion.

Any old style coffee shop is worth a visit to get out of the cold and reflect on the history.

Lastly, if you like military history, a trip to the Ardennes Forest is worth it. It's a drive from Amsterdam, but it also gives you a chance to see the countryside and meet the locals. How any army thought tanks could maneuver the forest is beyond me, but you get the sense of the hardships during the Battle of the Bulge.

Enjoy Amsterdam, it's a lovely city.

Exactly. They wouldn't have cut the mic and called the police if they agreed with what the Breitbart speakers were saying, since the BB group was very polite and well-behaved. They did what they did because they, the management, also didn't agree with the speech, and wanted to shut it down (which they did).

197 Ah, Amsterdam, my favorite European City.

See the Dam (the town square with lots of old buildings that gives Amsterdam its name).
Take a water taxi down the canals.
They have some cool museums (rijksmuseium, Van Gogh Museum).
Anne Frank House is there too.

Visit any pot bar. They give you a menu. Last time I was there only a select few served alcohol too. I highly recommend the "White Widow" strain. The hash is pretty good too.

Try the spacecake (made with shrooms) although I heard they clamped down on that in the last several years (too many tourists who were not rons and ettes trippin badly).

Oh and the old red light light district is a must see. It's a cobblestone alley (very narrow) with windows on either side displaying anything of a sexual nature you can imagine (and many things you would never even imagine). There are doors for the paying customers to enter and partake.

The club scene is pretty good too.

Leave your guns at home. No 2nd amendment there.

If it looks like a muslim it usually is, try and avoid it.

There is the Stedelijk Museum for modern art you should see. Dont miss Barney's Beanery art piece. The Van Gogh museum of course.

There is a museum outside of Amsterdam. I took a train and a bus. The station is near the "bridge too far" -- the museum which has a lot of Van Gogh is in the middle of a national park. You can get a free bike and ride around it.

Anne Frank's house is depressing, too. You see how cramped they lived and also Anne's photos of actresses she pasted on her wall. Also Otto pasted a map of the advancement of the allies.

Anne has that famous statement of believing people were really good inside. I wonder if she still believed it when she saw Birkenau. I sure dont believe it.

208 Take one of the longer canal tours. Make sure you take a decent camera with an empty memory card. If you take enough pictures as you cruise along, you can make people feel like they went along with you. I traveled there a few years ago, and that was one of the most enjoyable picture sets for my wife.

For a an unusual view of a river/canal where the water level is higher than the surrounding land, take the A9 to Ouderkerk Aan De Amstel (the town of Old Church on the Amstel) and set your GPS for Rondehoup Oost (street name). This will take you around an island. You will see boo-coo sheep and cattle farms and drive through several little villages. Note the reed grass growing along the edges of the rivers and canals - the Dutch still use it to make their awesome thatched roofs! You should see some as you drive around.

238 In Amsterdam:

Definitely take some time and walk around the Jordaan neighborhood, one of the older ones with a lot of lovely 17th and 18th century houses along the canals.

The Rijksmuseum is not to be missed - I wound up opening and closing it. Also the Amsterdam Hermitage had two very good collections when I was there in August (Napoleon and Alexander, and Portraits of the Golden Age) but I'm not sure what's there currently.

Check out the Amsterdam Museum, the one and only place where I saw any reference at all to poor Theo van Gogh. Also get a tour of the Royal Palace on Dam Square if at all possible. I didn't see either the Van Gogh Museum or the Anne Frank House (lines too long).

Also, the Vondelpark is worth walking through for the wild parakeets alone, IMO. Not sure about food recommendations, we stayed in East Amsterdam and the food was good but nothing worth going that far out of your way for.

I'd also second the recommendation for Zaanse Schans, but be aware that it (unlike Amsterdam) is touristy almost beyond belief.

239 There's this place called the Red Light District....I hear there's some lovely scenery this time of year.

240 I was in the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam abt 15 years ago. The entire lower floor was a huge mural featuring feces and vaginas.

Paid good money for shit. Literally.

meh.

Lovey city, though, but lots of street crime, don't leave a bag unattended - for a second.

241 Amsterdam? It makes a big difference whether you are by yourself or if you are with your family or coworkers. I think Amsterdam by yourself can be a bit difficult. If however you are with several other people you should be able to safely take in the sites.

By yourself or with your family there are better places to spend a week. My personal favorite is Maastricht. It's a much smaller and safer town with a large university population the only down side is that it's a bit more than 200 km south of Amsterdam but the trains run often and it's a very pleasant ride.

242 Find a so-called brown cafe (traditional Dutch pub) for a drink and/or dinner. Cafe Hoppe is a good one. And be sure to drink jenever, AKA gin.

243 Amsterdam's zoo is nice. Uncaged monkeys.

244 Great Dutch Beer bar: Arendsnest, Herengracht 90, www.arendsnest.nl

Pleasant restaurant; Brassierie Van Speyk, Spuistraat 3a.

Don't miss the Riksmuseum.

If you have time for a trip to Delft, about an hours by train as I remember visit the Vermeer museum. None of his originals are on display but a very informative museum of his work, teachers and life, including a recreation of his studio.
