1 Good Morning Morons. Today is Monday, October 19, 2015. On this day in 1781 at Yorktown, Virginia, representatives of British commander Lord Cornwallis handed over Cornwallis' sword and formally surrendered to George Washington and the comte de Rochambeau. The British band played world turned upside down during the ceremony.

What the safety guy at my old place used to say was for everybody to use good posture when sitting and get up and walk around periodically.

This is just another BS fad. If some turd told me to stand up all day I would tell him to kiss my ass. I used to have to do that in the control room when we were doing a startup or shutdown and after a few hours your back starts hurting.

The two-thirds of the population that doesn't work won't give a damn if taxes take away 100% of workers paychecks. As long as they get their free food and money.

I don't think there has ever been an election as important as the next one. There are so many supreme court justices that are on their last legs that if another Dem wins it's over.

65 Fernandez has a piece over at PJMedia dated yesterday (18th) where he says :

" The current Saudi King was once the prince in charge of funding the Jihad, and his son the crown prince Nayef, was buddies with Osama bin Laden."

Now that is probably not news, nor unsurprising, but it was a surprise to me to have names made public. There always was the suspicion that 9/11 was carried out by Wahabi extremists but no one would say it was the government of Saudi Arabia. If you can say that a country with 'strong man rule' has a government. Even in a Monarch (or strong man rule) there are still factions in opposition to the king. You might be able to buy loyalty for a time, but over generations that loyalty tends to evaporate as those who were once bought begin to believe they should be king.

Fernandez points out that the Russians in Syria, the Iranians, and Osama bin Laden left overs, all pose a threat to Saudi Arabia.

With the absence of credible American influence, brought about as a deliberate policy choice of Obama, the middle east will have no loyalty to US Foreign Policy. Add in the domestic (US) factional divide, also a deliberate policy of Obama, and one can see that the US will be a hundred years, or more undoing the damage to the US as a result of Obama's election, and that assumes the damage can be repaired.

What I've heard is that when the nutbag killer (won't dignify his name by invoking it) paused to change magazines in mid-rampage after shooting the instructor and several students, the remaining students just passively stood there and waited for him to finish reloading and to resume murdering them.

I would say "special snowflakes" and "kids these days", and to be sure that accounts for some of this, but there were also continuing-education adult students in that room who were in their forties, who didn't make a move to bum-rush the maniac.

69 Look, a president's time in office is his "administration." If you strongly feel the opposition is a dictator-in-waiting, you call it a "regime." That's an insult. It is never correct to call a presidential term his "reign." And, everybody's doing it.

In fairness, the platform for this gallows was nailed together 50 years ago, when American history was divided up into presidential eras. And here we all are, "weeping for the Republic" while spatting over which Man on A White Horse is going to ride in and restore our liberties. In his "reign."

While the people of Ukraine -- and the West -- suffer from Kerry's incompetence, his longtime "close personal friend", his largest fundraiser, Ben Barnes (pictured above) is getting very rich in the region Kerry screwed up.

A Public Relations industry news site, Everything PR News exclusively revealed today, "The Ben Barnes Group, led by Ben Barnes, the former Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives has been hired effective October 15th, 2015 by a shadowy law firm based in the British Virgin Islands with close ties to Ukrainian Prime Minister Petro Poroshenko at the fee of $100,000 per month."

the instructor and several students, the remaining students just
passively stood there and waited for him to finish reloading and to
resume murdering them.

I would say "special snowflakes" and "kids
these days", and to be sure that accounts for some of this, but there
were also continuing-education adult students in that room who were in
their forties, who didn't make a move to bum-rush the maniac.

Nation of sheep.

.
.It's not really the kids fault. They did exactly what they have been taught to do. Never confront anyone be nice and maybe you won't get shot, that kind of stuff. Parents and Society are to blame for the deaths of those kids. I mean come on young girls are taught to pee on a rapist instead of trying to resist or get away from them.

75 "With the absence of credible American influence, brought about as a
deliberate policy choice of Obama, the middle east will have no loyalty
to US Foreign Policy."

The ability of the US to alter outcomes in the region is vanishing anyway. The American military is operationally hollowed out, and is shrinking fast, and is led by preposterous popinjays more concerned with transgender promotion opportunities than with warfighting.

So what are the implications for a Middle East with no U.S. involvement?

The Saudis have said that if Iran goes nuclear, they will do likewise. Well, it looks like Barky has enabled a nuclear-armed Iran, so expect the House of Saud to follow shortly.

I would not be in ANY way averse to watching Tehran and Riyadh have buckets of sunshine both kicked over on them.

I'm from Central Florida. There's a lot of good places to eat, but I'd avoid the off-property bars. Whole damn state's full of drama queens, druggies, and crazy people. Going bar hopping in any of the major cities is a good way to get shot, stabbed, or mugged by someone hopped up on bath salts and meth - at the same time. Because to the gutter trash of Florida, one drug at a time is amateur hour.

He tried. The folks trying to tear him down are promoting these school shootings as hoaxes , ie, part of a plan.. ie, nuts. Dig a bit and they are likely to believe that fire doesn't melt steel and there weren't any planes on 9/11. Don't care to go there. Mintz stood up and fought back when everyone else accepted their fate. The more folks fight back , the easier to restore that to the default than the current sheep mode.

And they want moar socialism, I ask them? (Nervous chuckles in response.)

However, since the sum total of acceptable conservative candidates in the race is zero (0), it looks as though I may end up voting for Sanders as a thumb in the eye to Clinton, and as a let-it-burn accelerant.

It's not like voting Republican is going to make America less socialist. I got disabused of that nonsensical idea a long time ago, by voting Republican and then observing the actual outcomes.

While there are a few gutsy types with either the training or native instincts to react in this situation and go after the killer, I suspect the vast majority of people -- including you, and I -- would reacted in much the same way as those students did.

And I'm not going to pin the blame on "society" and "parents." Seems clear the situation generated plenty of sensory overload, and even a few genuine Heroes might have frozen.

Easy enough to come up with plenty of "they should haves" and "why didn't someones" on Monday morning. Much more difficult to do it on the spot.

appoint bi-partisan committees to decide on boundaries, that one is not a
good idea IMO."

Here in Commiefornia, we had Governator Ahnuld der Schtuppenfuhrer shove through one of those "bipartisan commission" arrangements to do redistricting.

The Democrats initially panicked, as the worst-gerrymandered districts in CA were all held by them.

The Democrats then realized that they had to buckle down on the business of cynically gaming the system, including taking longtime Democratic supporters and relabeling them as "Republican" candidates for the commission. Meanwhile, the actual Republicans passively and ineffectually farted about while the Democrats were working with focused determination.

End result of the "bipartisan redistricting commission"? Worse gerrymandering than ever, and a brand new supermajority of Democrats in the CA state legislature.

Deadly sea snakes showed up this week on a California beach for the first time in over thirty years thanks to warm El Nino waters.

110 I saw Darwinism in action yesterday: after a lovely hike yesterday, we drove through an adjacent county park that features an elk herd. The (BIG) bull elk was escorting his harem past the visitors center. It was a gorgeous day, w/lots of people milling around. Mr. Elk was desirous of munching acorns under the pin oaks. After 2 bluff charges, and much laughter from the assembly of idiots, he charged the crowd, and ended up with a 5-6 y/o boy on the ground. His dad reached in and snatched him before the elk could do more damage. The kid ended up w/a nasty puncture wound to his upper arm. He probably missed FAR worse injuries by inches.

111 @83 Right. And, one black sailor with an accordion made him a saint forever.
I've seen that footage more than the one where the bomb takes the B-24 wing off.

@63 'Tis pity 'tis true. When I was a junior federal civil servant, I worked with mostly retired or multi-term ex-military ("double-dippers" and "ten-pointers") and they were SDS red, to a man. Not just Nam vets, either. In the long run, I came up with two possible explanations:

There is a creature we used to call a "G.I. Intellectual." In the days before military-endorsed continuing education, guys would go to a lonely duty station (think LORAN here) with Just One Big Book, read it several times, and really think it over. With no context, comparison, or guidance, some real 'idees fixe' resulted. Of course, in modern education, the red is baked-in anyway.

Also, there is no more perfect socialist society than the military, for certain values of socialist or military. In action or in the garrison, the oddest theories can be made to yield a good-looking result if there is total buy-in, which you can get in the military by several means but you cannot get in open society by any means. Living in these surroundings for a long time can have a strange effect on men.

It's not that. They've become more aggressive over time, less spooked by people. It used to be they would bolt as soon as I walked out the back door. Now I have to walk toward them and get within about 50 feet before they even look up. That's when I take off running at them.

On a long enough time line I'm gonna catch one and punch its lights out. Though there's probably some animal cruelty law against that.

Trump did "admit" under cross examination that we were "safe" after 9/11, but he should have noted that our PC rules didn't sniff out Hissan, who killed 11 (?) just 8 months after Bush was out. And all the PC about not profiling for young male Arabs at airports is still not corrected.

142 >>The 489th is a geographically separated unit under the 307th Bomb Wing, which is at Barksdale Air Force Base. It will operate in a classic association with the 7th Bomb Wing at Dyess flying the B-1B Lancer. So using the historic name "489th" for a new configuration of people 'n stuff.

And if your magical thinking (everyone has it, it's a trait we're all stuck with) can't latch onto God, it tends to latch onto the next biggest thing that affects your life, which is Government. Suddenly instead of a benevolent, all-powerful deity, you have a benevolent, all-powerful government. The belief is even more irrational, because God can not be disproven, while all of history disproves the benevolence of government.

The longstanding repeatedly stated goal of bin Laden, his overarching long term plan, was to commit a spectacular terror atrocity that would impel the USA to commit itself to an unwinnable long term war in the Middle East.

The reason why attacks stopped in the USA after 9/11 isn't because "Bush kept us safe". Bush's blundering and bureaucratic security theater couldn't have accomplished that.

The reason why the attacks stopped was that there was no longer any reason for AQ to engage in them. Bush responded in precisely the way that bin Laden had wished for Bush to respond: by rushing into the Mideast quagmire.

AQ then reprioritized its efforts away from attacking civilians in America to attacking the military in Iraq. Again in keeping with the bin Laden long term plan.

This stuff appears to be a bit over Trump's head.

Even if Iraq was "right", we had to be in it to win it. Instead Bush left us open to a buffoon like Obama coming in. Some of that is 20/20 hindsight, but the open borders and multi-culti crap is insane.

Part of the alleged bin Laden goal is also to "bankrupt" us, with all the extra security, and the harm to the economy through fear. I guess that's why Bush told us to "go shopping". That is right in a sense, if we are buying American. But our welfare state, especially for all "minorities" is still killing us. Bush was also growing the welfare state, even for illegals.

My sister was in charge of the HR department of a huge multi-national in Singapore. They had a lot of foreigners (including herself) on work visas employed there. Whenever someone lost his job (in a layoff, etc.), the government would literally have someone at your place that day or the next to escort you to the airport.

Here, when someone on a work visa loses their job, nothing happens, and they generally just stick around.

Part of the disillusionment of the post-Bush years has been... wasn't the point of funding a large, well-equipped military so that we could win wars quickly and decisively? What use is spending billions of dollars on the military if politicians won't use it to, you know, win wars? It feeds the suspicions of some that prolonged wars just benefit the military-industrial complex.

208 Not sure you are all aware, but the Canadian version of Silky Pony - Justin Trudeau - son of Pierre Elliot Trudeau (who was Prime Minister in Canada, famed friend of Fidel and the single biggest asshole this country has ever had) is poised to take over the reins of the government. His slogan - Change and hope, or some bullshit is only topped by his plans to legalize pot. After finally achieving a SURPLUS in our federal budget he has pledged to bring back, at minimum 10 Billion dollar deficits (which in real world will more likely be 3-4 times that). He has the youth vote locked up with goodies for all. His greatest achievement in life, apart from being born with a silver spoon up his ass and the last name Trudeau is being a drama teacher. Lord help us. Between him and the NDP in Alberta Canada is in for a rough ride. If the polls are correct - and there is always huge debate on that - our beloved Stephen Harper is being sent to the woodpile. The vitriolic Harper Derangement Syndrome is peaking with this campaign. The media has basically ignored every gaffe and scandal on the Liberal campaign and essentially demonized a good man. Sound familiar? Maranatha!

Remember those signs at the rides at Disney that say "2 hours from this point"?

The guides don't promise anything, but if your group (up to is cool and doesn't have any idiots who would walk past the line of people who have been waiting hours saying "HA HA, were getting on now!", you go through the magical side doors and get right on.

Not only do you get on, but you get on the best seats on the ride. Same with shows. Once we went to the Indian Jones show, the kids were offered parts as extras and we had the best seats in the house. Restaurants that take bookings months in advance were available on a whim. People camped out for hours for a good spot for the parade, we walked right in after the barriers were up, had nice seats right were the actors do their bit.

Riding everything until you're tired of it, going backstage, doing it all, it's worth twice the price.

My kids are grown now and they still talk about the times we went there.

225 My problem in in 20/20 hindsight, was the idea that we could stand up Iraq and ignore Iran. Iran openly supported the insurgency and we did nothing. They manufactured shaped bombs that took too many lives and we did nothing. THAT is the dumbfounding thing to me. All the brains HAD to know that Iran was a problem or would be one. So why, when Iran stepped up to the plate, we acted as if it was something we could deal with via statesmanship?

AND if you say, we're not going to take them all on, fine... then that would mean, you can't fight a war in Iraq and allow Iran to stir and meddle and fight a proxy war from right next door. It should have been a no-go. Then Obama, the Persian-caliphate enabler gets to office and undermines all of it, so you have to ask, WTF? Why was this not foreseeable and since it clearly was, why the decision to just go ahead? Someday it will all come out or not, but the hands-off Iran stuff, though understandable, sure pisses me off since we had history of fighting a war with hostile neighbors deemed off limits. No Bueno.

230 "The attacks didn't stop in America during Bush's terms. WTH revisionism?"

Mainline AQ, by far the predominant professional terror threat, stopped their efforts on U.S. soil after 9/11. Per their doctrine.

What attacks were attempted were instead by ridiculous amateur sympathizer and copycat groups. Like the genius circle of radical muzzies at one New York City mosque who were planning to bring down the Brooklyn Bridge... with _blowtorches_.

Would have been funny as hell to watch them attempt it. "Abdul! The bridge steel is not melting! What is wrong? The American kuffars must have sabotaged the torches!"

Now, amateur sympathizers who don't have direct contact with an outfit like mainline AQ can still be very dangerous and can carry out lethal attacks. Witness Nidal Hasan. Or the Tsarnaev brothers.

But note as well that all of the huge, intrusive, and expensive Homeland Security apparatus installed by Bush to "keep us safe" accomplished precisely nothing in terms of shutting down either the Fort Hood massacre or the Boston bombing. Despite the sloppiness and lack of operational security by the plotters.

if I were King of the Forest-

The creation of voting districts would by law start at say, the NW corner of each state,

and have to as closely as possible resemble a square increasing in size until it holds a pre-determined proportionate amount of the state's voting population.

All other districts would branch off from that one following the same rules.

Not perfect, but that would be the end of gerrymandered districts, and it would force politicians to run on policies that include all Americans,

and not just pander to certain groups isolated in weird little spider-looking districts.
