If you wanted to start your own island nation-state, where would you go?

Someplace in the tropics would be sweet, but I've spotted a couple high-spots in the local river that would do in a pinch.

Good news, everyone!:

El Nino bringing poisonous sea snakes to California beaches

Heal The Bay, a Southern California environmental group, is sounding the alarm about the highly toxic the yellow-bellied sea snake being twice found late this week on a beach in Oxnard, the first sightings in 30 years.

With what the group calls some of the most poisonous venom in the world, the exotic species is descended from Asian cobras and tiger snakes from Australia and can stay on land for more than an hour.

4 Tears of the Kyriarch

A recently trending hashtag on Twitter was #MasculinitySoFragile. While there is much to belittle said hashtag, the online rag The Frisky ran an article making fun of men using that hashtag.

Interestingly enough, the tweet they originally sent out included an image of a coffee cup that said "White Tears". Not "Male Tears," but "White Tears."

6 There's some large islands for sale off Belize, Greece, and Chile. If you were able to talk any of those governments into selling the sovereignty along with the land, any of them would be a good place.

Or to put it another way, any place where you can live and be free is a good place. Freedom can turn a barren hellhole into paradise, and tyranny turns paradise into hell.

The best place for that would be Koko Seamount, in the Pacific. It's a distant part of the Hawaiian chain that's been submerged for quite a while now, but the head of it is a large as Hawaii's Big Island, and the highest point is only +/- 50 meters down. You could make a platform city or an underwater colony (or some combination of the two) pretty easily there...

Bonus, it's about as far from the rest of the world as you can get. Don't have to worry much about the neighbors.

The Palm Beach Post reports former Florida governor Charlie Crist is going to jump into a congressional race next week. Christ will run for what's currently known as District 13 and constitutes most of the Pinellas County suburbs of St. Petersburg. The seat is currently held by Republican David Jolly, but Jolly is one of the Republicans now running for Rubio's Senate seat.

District 13 is also one of the districts that will likely be affected once court-mandated plans to redraw Florida's congressional districts are actually completed. The new district will likely include the actual city of St. Pete along with its closest suburbs, making it much more favorable for Democrats.

26 "Heal The Bay, a Southern California environmental group, is sounding the alarm about the highly toxic the yellow-bellied sea snake being twice found late this week on a beach in Oxnard"

Or the snakes could have been placed as greeniac agitprop. With press releases tuned up in advance.

If you don't think that the left would stoop to such things, I would counsel you otherwise.

Talked with a guy who had been involved with one of the SF Bay Area's longtime shooting ranges, this one at Coyote Point hard on the Bay itself. Publicly owned and operated. The local leftist anti-gun-rights community pressured local pols for years to curtail shooters' access to the range.

Then an expended pistol bullet was magically found lying on a nearby stretch of bayside beach outside of the range perimeter, and the local pols panicked about "safety concerns", and gave the leftist loons their demanded wishlist.

Afterward, it came out that the bullet had been deliberately planted. Anti-gun-rights activists still openly talk about their sleight of hand on that one, and call it one of the least expensive and most productive campaigns they have ever run in this state.

So did the range return to full public access after the grounds for the curtailment became known to be a pile of lying crap? Did the local pols apologize for their hysterical overreaction and rescind their action? Man, this is Commiefornia. Of course none of those things happened.

So when I hear about strange stuff being suddenly "discovered" on Commiefornia beaches, where the presence of said stuff aligns with the political goals of the lefty movement who purport to have made the discovery, forgive my instant immediate skepticism. Been there. Done that.

Meanwhile, in Serbia:

The union representing workers at the Fiat 500L factory in Kragujevac, Serbia has a big job ahead of it. Workers are demanding raises, bonuses, and a steady work schedule. In its most recent newsletter, the union listed those demands once again, but instead of news of a pay negotiation the union told workers theyve negotiated a chicken discount at a local butcher.

Workers can get chicken drumsticks at a discounted rate equivalent to $1.14 per pound.

29 "Why are the Republicans not fighting this crap harder? Because their tue constituency wants that cheap labor."

And because that constituency foolishly believe that they can have the cheap labor without also getting destructive antibusiness leftist politics along with it.

Which is NOT the case.

Look at Commiefornia. Whose politics have been dominated and transformed by mass immigration. CA has cheap labor, but what the cheap labor also created was a political machine which leaves CA stuck with a _dead last_ position for business climate of all fifty states.

A must-have utility for a mobile phone is Wifi Analyzer. Free download, but after a month it will display some small innocuous ad. It has a cool meter display which updates every couple seconds with a beep. You can pinpoint the very best location for reception within inches. Sometimes those inches are the difference between getting good reception and having problems.

It also will, on another display all the wifi in the area, hidden or not. I thought I had a second wifi that was hidden from view but it found it. I walked down the street and was amazed how many of my neighbors had more then one wifi broadcasting. I think it was also finding our electric meters which now only require a drive-by by my utility to read.

I'd rate it four plus stars.

80 "I have lived by this sentence"

By Joseph R. Sizoo, former President of New Brunswick Theological Seminary, the oldest seminary in the United States-Quoted in "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" by Dale Carnegie

Years ago, in a day of uncertainty and disillusionment, when my whole life seemed to be overwhelmed by forces outside of my control, one morning quite casually I opened my New Testament and my eyes fell on this sentence, "He that hath sent me is with me-the father hath not left me alone." (John 8:29). My life has never been the same since that hour. Everything for me has been different after that. I suppose not a day has passed that I have not repeated it to myself. Many have come to me for counseling during those years, and I have always sent them away with this sustaining sentence.. Ever since that hour when my eyes fell upon it, I have lived by this sentence. I have walked with it and found in it my peace and strength. To me it is the very essence of religion. It lies at the rock bottom of everything that makes life worth living. It is the Golden Text of my life.

100 Roger Barson-economist

When I find myself depressed over current conditions, I can within an hour, banish worry and turn myself into a shouting optimist. Here is how I do it. I enter my library, close my eyes and walk to certain shelves containing only books on history, With my eyes still shut I reach for a book, not knowing whether I am picking up Preston's, "Conquest of Mexico" or Suetonius' "Life of the Twelve Caesars." With my eyes still closed I open the book at random. I then open my eyes and read for an hour; and the more I read I realize that the world has always been in the throes of agony, that civilization has always been tottering at the brink. That pages of history fairly shriek with tragic tales of war, famine,, poverty, pestilence and man's inhumanity to man. After reading history for a while, I realize that as bad as conditions are now, they are infinitely better than they used to be. This enables me to see and face my present troubles in their proper perspective.

155 When Kenneth Altazan walked into his first reunion almost 12 years ago, he expected a lot of smiles and lively conversation with his fellow Vietnam veterans from Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 364. Instead, he was given a gift that changed his life.

Former Marines in attendance gave him an audio recording the product of a chance exchange he had with a surveillance plane pilot during a heavy firefight with the North Vietnamese Army in 1969. It captured the incident during which then Sgt. Altazan helped rescue 10 Marines, earning him the Silver Star.

But that award has now been upgraded to a Navy Cross the Navy and Marine Corps second highest award for valor, behind only the Medal of Honor after the recording brought new details of his bravery to light.

I don't give a rat's ass about Jeb and I give Trump full credit for his part, and it is a rather large part I think, in putting a cross in Jeb's heart. But blaming President for 9/11 is a distraction at best and detracts from all of Trumps other important arguments.

220 Krakatoa, are you talking about setting up your own pirate enclave, a la Dry Tortugas, in your local river, or are you talking about a Belle Island concept

http://preview.tinyurl.com/qznaxza

Belle Isle is a 982-acre island in the Detroit River, located between
mainland Detroit and Windsor, Ontario. It is owned by the City of
Detroit, [and] has historically been a beautiful public park, but has
fallen into disrepair due to Detroit's financial troubles.

[The] vision is that it be developed into a vibrant community of 50,000
residents, borrowing ideas from Singapore, Monaco, and Liechtenstein;
Singapore for its free and business-friendly markets, Monaco for its
hosting a Formula One race, and Liechtenstein for its transparent,
effective, and accountable government.

In short, a giant gated community with its own government and taxation. A sort of City as a giant mall concept.

The Atlantic City casinos transformed an urban slum into a wealth factory of money and jobs. Property values soared. People were offered large multiples of assessed value. What do you call someone who refuses an offer that good? I think they were insane.

In one case they built right around a holdout.

As a postscript Atlantic City is slowly returning to its former shabby condition as casino after casino shuts down as neighboring states enact their own 'gaming facilities'.

I'm by no means in favor of eminent domain, especially as practiced by government agencies offering assessed value only. But there's nothing I ever saw that indicated that the Atlantic City real estate developers were not rewarding people handsomely for their properties. Usually the ant-prosperity folks hang out at Kos or DU. Don't expect to see them here.

Can the real people move back and live the lives they had? I understand your arguments but one guy's slum is another guy's way of life. Isn't that the rationale for Kelo?

Eminent Domain is properly used for works that benefit the general public....roads, dams, critical infrastructure.

When the primary driver of the seizure of property is commerce....as well meaning as Atlantic City's might have been....those who benefit are not the general public, but the developers. And that reeks of corruption and cronyism.

The question for those multiples of value that some people received for their property is: how much would the properties have been worth had the power of government not been behind the sales.

326 For those who are thinking about seeing "Crimson Peak', here's my quickie review from one of yesterdays threads:

I just saw "Crimson Peak".

Bad movie. Beautiful to look at but bad.

They must've changed the movie mid-shooting or tried to edit around problems because there are a lot a lot of non-sequitur scenes and information dumps.

Oh, and the ghosts?

Absolutely, unnecessary to the story. Story could've happened almost exactly the same without ghosts.

It seems clear from the non-sequitur scenes and info dumps that the ghosts were meant to play a part but Nope.

So, to wrap up.

"Crimson Peak" is a "Jane Eyre" "Rebecca" "Gaslight" sort of mash-up with ghosts that don't really do anything. Sort of like the ghosts who watch you fap.
You know they're there. But you're gonna fap anyway.

330 This movie is really bad. Thor: Hammer of the Gods on Netflix. It's a 2009 non-Marvel flick. It is MST3K worthy. Uneven accents, ridiculously lame dialogue, clumsy, boring fight scenes, nonsensical plot points, crappy special effects (very few, thankfully) that look like they're out of an old video game. Thor looks like a couch potato with a scruffy beard. Only a half hour left, worth watching for laughs at this point, I might as well finish it.

361 Side note that probably no one will care about but me, but oh well whatever.

Yesterday I listened to a man, muslim by birth, Christian by choice, who runs a mission targeted to reach muslims with the Gospel, and turn their hearts to the one true God. He was talking about one man he recently spent time with who was a fighter for ISIS. He said that the ISIS guy broke down in tears when the muslim/Christian pastor read John 3:16 to him. The ISIS guy said he had never ever before heard that God loves people. He said that in the Koran, there are 99 names for Allah, but "love" is not one of them. He said that the Koran teaches all will be sent to hell, unless they kill and die for Allah. This is why they kill and blow themselves up. The ISIS guy said he was so afraid of going to hell, that's why he joined ISIS. He converted to Christianity on the spot once he heard the good news of the Gospel.

The muslim/Christian pastor says he has personally seen this happen in the lives of over a thousand muslims. He said the underground church is much larger in the muslim world than we might think. Many terrorists have turned away from the killing because of these brave Christians that are not afraid to read the Bible with these terrorists.

Oh yeah, he also talked about a guy in Boko Haram who had the same experience but I didn't catch the whole thing about that because I had to play Lincoln Logs with my grandkids.

You anti-Trump folks will try to take anything he says and claim it's a deal breaker. For whatever reason/justification you can come up with sensible or not.

You Trump folks will not care about what he's done in the past because he's made promises about things we want done that no one else has made. We have yet to reach a current comment that creates an imbalance.

So how about you folks stop trying so hard and wishing so much that he'd die and disappear and we'll stop grinning and being smug as his numbers increase. m'kay?

I think that has always been a requirement. I admire George Washington but I see no evidence he wasn't narcissistic. I would still vote for him. Washington had a sense of honour and decorum. The US lost it when Bill Clinton wagged his finger in our faces and said he didn't have sex with that woman, that Miss Lewinsky. Now we know the meaning of ISIS.

377 "Can we agree on one thing?"

No. :-)

I think the reason Trump is winning is the same reason Bill Clinton won. People believe that as a whole Trump will do what they want. Doesn't matter if it's true. As long as they believe it. Bill Clinton means tested SS (research it if you don't believe me). SS payments to the elderly have been cut the last few years (and will be cut next year) because of Bill Clinton and Obama's (CPI, Obamacare) changes. The people who won't research the above facts don't want to believe those facts. Trump is using that same mechanism. Trump tried to run against Obama and gave up because Obama is better at this style than Trump or Clinton. We are lucky that Obama doesn't have Mitt's analytical abilities or we would be in bigger trouble.
