I use to have a book of "etchings" from the 1700-1800s. The drawings were of Rome and it showed all these famous sites overgrown by vegetation. They were true depictions of Rome at the time and you would see shepherd grazing their flocks among the ruins. Reminds me of that painting.

56 Ya that was gross.

I really doubt it was Ace that did the banning.

I thought Ace believed in free speech--and the person that was banned didn't violate the new rules while others did.

I have cought for free speech, as many of my family have and it's kind of gross that only an older lady stood up for free speech on the last thread.

I'd like to have it run by Ace , if he's given up on his value and belief in free speech--I'd be rather surprised and saddened.

No sun - no moon!
No morn - no noon -

No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds! -

80 52. They can't raise interest rates by more than a tiny fraction. They'd never be able to pay the interest on the national debt. It would a super booming economy first.

Posted by: PaleRider at October 16, 2015 11:42 AM (iA/+T)

81 I have a good friend from high school who was a political science major. He likes to make a distinction between being conservative and republican, quoting Buckley. His problem is he's an elitist, an open elitist, and his brand of conservatism is finding nuanced, elitist reasoning to back up mainstream liberal positions, which he holds. "Obamacare is great, but not for the reasons those stupid LIBERALS trot out."

It's just about feeling superior by cutting against the grain. In the same way many libertarians are conservatives who don't have the courage to confront liberals on how leftist social policy is weaponized to silence dissent on fiscal and government policy, "conservatives" like him get to look smart by arguing with liberals over what color the zippers on our straitjackets should be.

This also explains the positions of practically everyone at the National Review.

90 Wasn't someone just the other day invoking the hunter figure depicted in the "Bear In The Woods" political ad?

Whomever it was claimed that it was the ad which got Reagan elected.

Nope. Re-elected. 1984 election cycle, not 1980.

The "Bear" spot was cooked up by longtime San Francisco ad man Hal Riney. A limousine liberal who wasn't averse to cashing big checks from conservatives. And who actually delivered value for money.

Posted by: torquewrench at October 16, 2015 11:45 AM (noWW6)

91 Trump on the interest rates in the sidebar: yep. This is one of several time bombs waiting, stuff that Obama has been kicking along the curb until the next president takes over. Its one reason I don't want a person I respect and admire in office in 2017. Whoever takes over is going to eat a gigantic crap sandwich. Obama will do anything to prevent it from happening on his watch, and the forces that triggered the crash at the end of Bush's presidency are on his side.

Don't look at me like that. Everyone knew a crash was coming, but when it happened was largely up to a small group of very rich, powerful people that pulled the lever when they did. Someone started selling off and pulling money out of banks in huge sums and that triggered the meltdown. They did it right then, on purpose, for a reason.

110 I don't like how people on the internet these days use "troll" to mean "people who say stuff I don't like."

Troll has a pretty specific and useful meaning, and its not simply someone that annoys you. They are people who post deliberately provocative things in order to frustrate and annoy people for a negative response. Honestly posting what you believe to be true isn't trolling simply because someone doesn't care to hear or read it.

116 "But it certainly offered a stark contrast between the two nominees."

The moment you could see on Fritz Mondale's face the sudden horrified realization that he was going to lose was while he was debating Reagan, and Reagan observed that Mondale had cut a TV ad describing himself as tough on defense, while standing on the deck of an aircraft carrier.

Reagan went on to say that Mondale in reality would have been swimming to shore, because Mondale had, while in the Senate, voted against funding for that very same ship.

119 Right now, with all of the nonprofessional political candidates, it is probably safe to say that there is a bit of a voter revolution going on.

In the area of business, I think that the next potential revolution is going to be of shareholders.

It has been brewing for a long while, but recently, with the overt foray of CEO's and other business leaders (following evidently people like Soros, Buffet, Zuckerburg, Page, Cook, Bezos and a raft of others) who have become so outspoken in the social and political arenas, company results are coming under more scrutiny from share holders.

Piss poor continuing bottom line performance is starting to piss people off and I wouldn't be surprised if another major round of shareholder lawsuits didn't kick off in the near future.

Shareholders (I believe) would kind of like to see CEO's and other business leaders start tending to business and start performing their fiduciary duties.

yeah that sounds right ... then the Goldman Sachs Gang comes in and says we need TARP, etc. The GS Boyz run the DC/NYC hood, as their leaders drift between the federal reserve, GS, IMF, and so on, pulling all the strings. It is not conspiracy, their resumes show them moving back and forth from year to year. Corzine gets in trouble gambling and crosses the forbidden line to "borrow" $1.5Billion from clients that thought they were safe. No jail for Corzine though, and now it is all cleaned up.

I'm still not quite clear on those muddy waters, but it seems that $600Trillion unregulated derivative market somehow got magically underwritten by taxpayers, and these gamblers got to call themselves banks. Then they "rehypothecate" billions, another trick where they gamble against funds while only hypothetically using them as collateral. (or something mysterious like that). Rehypothecating was limited finally, unless one goes to London, where the sky is the limit ... or the moon.

And most have no clue ... just keep spending and obeying the GS gurus, so stupid voters will keep voting the party line. We are set up for really bad stuff ... we just have to hope these GS Gods don't want to turn America into a third world hellhole ... or their version of a new kingdom.

But, it balances to the rear really well and swings fast while being very short and light overall. It's really a perfect firearm for working checkpoints, and a pretty good one for home defense.

However, there are a few things it just doesn't do as well as a much cheaper well built AR.

187 It just occurred to me, how similar the election of 2016 is going to be to 2008 with everything reversed.

Young minority senator paired with old white Senator (I'm assuming Cruz/Portman) going against old out-of-tough politician who doesn't reflect the base paired with young new face most people don't know. In-party has just been decimated due to actions of the President.

Of course, in this case, the GOP at least nominated a war hero and a sitting govenor, while the Dems are looking to nominate a criminal and some mayor who has no real power.

I HATE passive voice. I work with a developer who can't speak in active voice to save his life.

"It was decided that..."
"It was implemented in such a way..."

It pisses me off when I have to pull teeth to find out that the reason he implemented a function a certain way is because of reasons that no longer apply. And now we don't have to accept a crappy trade-off, we can do it the right way.

But he plays his games to hide information that, once clear, make it obvious the present situation can be changed for the better.

258 Good Koch interview with Megyn, though the YouTube video cuts out right at the free trade comment. Charles Koch says "tariffs are a disaster, and the principle way human beings have gotten out of poverty is free trade".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0O6q-3OQDw

Well ... Genghis Khan might argue with that. His marauders got rich. I mean, free trade is a great standard to aspire to, but most of the world are liars and cheats that will go to war if necessary, to get what they want. We constantly use trade status as a weapon against that world, and rightly so.

The last five "5-year plans" have promised that the trade deficits would in time balance naturally, but they only get worse. We now know that our alleged comparative advantage itself can be exported. We still have some advantages, but not enough to fully employ the lower half. Regulations are part of the problem, but our much higher standards (health care, pollution, welfare, etc.) mean costs are higher here. Those costs aren't magically eliminated by economic theory ... costs which countries with disposable people and no pollution standards or trial lawyers don't have.

Free trade is theory, that works in controlled environments. Even the US is not so controlled, as we see in education, for instance, where parents must pay double if they want to home school or privately school. "Free trade" works best when we had all the advantages, like after we destroyed the competition in WW2, or when we owned the patents on all the best stuff.

Anyway ... "free trade" is only theory, and every deal and its consequences have to be considered in detail. Corporations of course want to eliminate all barriers, but enriching enemies can have terrible consequences, which is what our government must consider. "America first" is about "protecting" our fought for values and freedoms, not "freely" competing with communists or Islamists that will in time use their gains to kill us.

To me the "free trade" mantra belongs in "make love not war" category of slogans.

The derivative market was something they needed to create, so they can use it as the reserves they are supposed to have on hand for fractional lending.

Because they do not WANT anyone to have savings (Keynes economics says savings are bad, its only the flow of money which is good)... thus they have created a system where inflation is greater than interest on savings... (blatant theft by the government of the peoples wealth)...

but they needed something else (vice said savings) to use as the reserves... thus they created the whole derivative market...

Which has now become nothing more than a virtual Vegas.... with no real ties to real world assets (they don't know what assets are in which derivative...)...

Note, the Fed Res Bank balance sheet went from about $100 billion 10 years ago... to $4 TRILLION today.... without creating a single product... without creating anything tangible... by just adding Zeros to a few computer files in banks (quantitative easing).

Hollywood Production Spikes after Tax Breaks

In May, the California State Assembly unanimously passed AB 1839, a bill that expanded California's existing film and TV tax credit and incentive program. According to a new report, the move is working, as Hollywood has seen a resurgence in the number of TV programs being filmed in the state.

California's new rebate program is based on a production's ability to create jobs and boosted annual incentives from $100 million to $330 million, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

381 @317 - partly. Right now the biggest threat to effective Latino control over state government is probably Asian voters' hostility to affirmative action, particularly for school admissions.

The Latinos want it, the white Democrats will happily give it to them because that's the only way they stay in power, the blacks want it but don't represent a significant power base in the state any longer.

But the Asians, Indians, Russian Jews, and other immigrant groups - who may not have the numbers, but have some money and are beginning to show the willingness to organize - will kill to prevent it.
