Uh, have you not seen all the photos Palestinian parents take of their lil' munchkins dressed up as terrorists holding AK-47s? Also, the children's programming that teaches toddlers to hate Jews. A 16 year old Palestinian doesn't just break bad and attack random Jews, he/she is trained to want to do this from birth.

52 Depends on the model, Cicero.

If it's a Glock 27, and it fits her hand okay, the gen 3 is just fine. The only real difference is the changeable backstraps, grip texture, and mag release. My 27 is a gen 3 and I'm perfectly happy with it.

If you're talking a Glock 22 or 23, the dual recoil spring redesign in the gen 4 is worth buying that instead of a gen 3.

66 Columbus day was traditionally a day for parades and such. I remember seeing pictures when I was a kid.

Columbus day 1962 where I grew up was the Columbus day storm, which was where the Pacific NW got pasted with the tail end of Typhoon Frida. When I was a little kid there seemed to be always some mention of "the old trees out front that were knocked down by the storm, or how they re-routed the power line after all the poles got knocked over, or the buildings and barns that got blown over.

That was a really unusual storm.

97 To be specific, a 'Saucer Magnolia'. Very popular at the turn of the century. IMHO, quite possible one of the ugliest ornamental trees on earth. Pinkish-white flowers are very short lived and just fade into splotchy brown mess while still on the tree leaving you with a splotchy brown and pink mess on the lawn when they fall.

202 >>I apologize if anyone here tweeted "Happy Anniversary" to their spouse, but I have to tell you, I still think it's tacky!

It's something that's crept into our politics - the expectation that all Americans will celebrate important days, such as birthdays and anniversaries, of our politicians. Think it started with Obama - how OFA has their fundraisers where they ask people to send Michelle birthday wishes (and kindly enter your home and email addresses). Just as insipid are the fundraisers where they want you to ask people to donate to Obama in lieu of a wedding or birthday gift. This is creepy Dear Leader stuff, definitely *not* American type of behavior.

265 Today is the 100th anniversary of the execution by the German Army of English nurse Edith Cavell (1865-1915) on 12 October 1915. Born in Norfolk the daughter of an Anglican vicar, Cavell had moved to Belgium in 1907 to administer a school of nursing. With the coming of World War I and the German occupation of Belgium, she was put in charge of a Red Cross hospital that treated both Allied and German wounded. Simultaneously, she was active in a clandestine effort to assist nearly 100 English soldiers caught behind the lines to escape captivity and return to Britain. When the plot was uncovered by the German authorities, Cavell was court-martialed and executed by firing squad. The resulting world-wide outcry of protest against German "frightfulness" became an enormous propaganda victory for the Allied cause. Nurse Cavell is honored by a memorial statue in London's St. Martin's Place, just off Trafalgar Square. After the war, her body was returned to England and buried outside Norwich Cathedral.

There is a lot of debate among the scientific community as to the origin of syphilis. But new research has uncovered a skeleton from the second to the sixth century in Croatia that shows signs of syphilis. Other researchers though dispute that finding maintaining that it did come from the new world. It is dammed hard to get scientists who have made up their mind to change it.

308 During the French Indian War, a brit officer sent a letter to his commanding officer about giving the indians infected blankets. This was before we became a country and there was never any evidence that it was done. Even back then people were aware that diseases did not favor one race over the other and to intentially infect one race would result in other races being infected, too.

309 So I'm really, really not one for reading self help books, but I have to say that I just tried the whole KonMari thing for my clothes, and it has literally changed my life.

If you are overrun with clutter, which with 5 kids, I obviously was in spades, check out the crazy Japanese lady and her crazypants system.

Yes, she tells you talk to your clothes. Yes, she almost certainly has a diagnosed mental health issue, but going through every item you own, deciding if it makes you happy or not, and purging like a crazy person, really does help clear things out.

And her folding methods? OMG. I cleared out two full drawers. They're completely empty. The other drawers are like 1/3 full. My dresser had been completely stuffed to capacity.

My closet? Looks like a freaking Martha Stewart magazine.

Seriously guys, go check it out. Again, she is crazy. This needs to be said up front. Certifiable. However, she is a crazy chick who has dedicated all of her crazy energy into devising the best way to store your shit and it totally works.

/plug (I just seriously feel the need to evangelize because the difference in my house is already amazing after just clearing out about 15 bags (across 7 people) of clothes and bedding and all the other crap that was in our closets.

DO IT.

Rare TWD comment. OK nice overall job but last night's basic premise was the worst shark-jump yet in the series. Leading the zombies OUT of a huge quarry where they could easily be trapped by reinforcing/building barriers? Ridiculous.

They didn't show a lot of detail, but I think enough to back that up. Dynamite the access roads? Place noisemakers in the place to keep attracting zombies who fall in (this was seen happening in the CGI portion)?

Come on. Elaborate plan to lure them out and lead them away (20 mi? that's a "solution" vs. leaving them in the *perfect* trap?) vs. leveraging the quarry that was obviously highly effective?

Only thing dumber was the only humans on Earth who knew the full story of the epidemic (remember the group's little stay at the CDC before it blowed up?) acting on some nobody's claim that he knew a solution but had to get to DC (last season's silly thing with Eugene and his quest). Lots of lazy/silly plot writing in that show, though maybe it's the norm now, don't watch much of anything any more.

Dyson is also deeply concerned that the world appears to be experiencing a hunger for apocalypse, comparable to the buildup to World War 1.

The years before 1914 were a tremendously promising time. Russia was getting richer, [but then] the whole thing fell apart. It's comparable today -- we've done a much better job with feeding the world and if you look at the number of desperately poor people, it has been decreasing quite steadily.

"More likely the EU legalizes Heroin"

Some may recall that bright new dawn back when the George W. Bush administration were first proposing to do "nation-building" in Afghanistan.

You know, the stuff which Bush had specifically promised as a candidate to abjure as being a waste of lives and money. Wherein it was seriously being proposed by grown adult individuals to somehow transform Kunduz into Kalamazoo.

I thought it over and said, "Nah bro. Stay out of that place. Legalize heroin and other opiate drugs of abuse by prescription, subsidize the cost, and stand up controlled local sources of Stateside production. Destroy at a stroke the most lucrative single export market the Afghans have."

Under this proposal, AFG would have continued to be a backward shithole full of radical muzzies. Just as it continues to be today. But they would be up to a lot less trouble. America would be several trillion dollars richer today, and a bunch of America's finest fighting troops would still be alive and/or uncrippled. 446 Scandis discovered America. Or the Irish. I know, a distinction without a difference. Youngest daughter informs me that her college celebrates Leif Erikson day on Oct 8.

*wanders into thread*

This may have been covered.

St. Brendan (Ireland) allegedly visited the new world in the early 500s. That's likely legend, as he also camped out on a whale's back and built fires there for a couple of weeks.

Leif Erikson indisputably visited the new world in AD 1000. The Icelandic sagas have been backed up by physical evidence, including L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland where the filthy Scandis overwintered for two or three years.

Those heathen Mediterranean deniers who say that Norse contact in North America doesn't count because the knowledge didn't reach the real Europe are full of shit.

The Vatican -- a place in Rome -- appointed Bishop Henrik as bishop to Iceland, Greenland, and Vinland in something like AD 1113, so they certainly had heard of Vinland.

The Vinland Map of 1347 is totally legit and was circulating in southern Europe.

The Basques were fishing off Nova Scotia and drying their cod on shore way before Columbus (see Mark Kulansky: Cod, a Biography of a Fish that Changed the World).

Some of the 19th century American Vikingphanalia may be bogus, like the Kensington rune stone, or not. But the filthy Scandis were all over this continent like fleas with herpes way before that Spanish-paid guido found Haiti.

Following their Hart To Hart remake with a gay couple, Sony TV is rebooting another classic 1970s drama series from the Spelling-Goldberg catalog, Fantasy Island.

The new take shakes up the original concept about a tropical island where people pay to go and live out their fantasies. Gone is the island where both series were set, with Fantasy Island is now the name of a company that designs and executes fantasies for clients. In another major change, the enigmatic Fantasy Island owner Mr. Roarke, played by Ricardo Montalban in the previous versions, will be a woman.

The new Fantasy Island centers on a brilliant, dynamic and sexy woman who runs a San Francisco-based company that provides clients with his or her most intimate, dark or outlandish fantasy. Like the original series, each episode is expected to chronicle two fantasies, with an overarching serialized arc involving Roarke and her personal life.

Funnily, most of these girls will keep a bat next to their doors, thinking that somehow they'll be able to bring a club to bear in a hallway.

But these wilting flowers require a big, strong, man to save them rather than take responsibility for their own safety.

472 "The hoplophobes have come back around to the 'you only have guns to compensate for a tiny penis' shtick."

I've gotten that before.

What I said in response was that when I was confronted with a feral tweaker prying open a back window with a tire iron at three o'clock in the morning, my penis _did in fact_ immediately shrink into near insignificance, and that my balls both made a determined attempt to retreat up to hide behind my appendix.

So I concluded that trying to use said penis and balls as weapons against the intruder was probably not a good plan, and I went and got my 9mm instead. Which, wouldn't you know it, caused the tweaker to flee at once. I don't think displaying the dick would have produced the same outcome.

And in the case of SFPD, those are some of the most aggressively pencil-whipped numbers you will ever see from any major metro police force.

Near as I can figure, it's unofficial but strictly enforced departmental policy to compel beat officers to write as few reports as they can get away with.

I've heard SF beat cops present ridiculous and completely unfactual excuses like "we can only write up theft if it's grand theft, otherwise it's between you and your insurance company".

They even have described one plainly obvious murder case as a suicide. Gotta keep those numbers looking good and the tourists and techies coming in.
