Overnight Open Thread (10-8-2015)

A bit of housekeeping: I'm off to Europe for two weeks - Barcelona, Dusseldorf, Amsterdam, plus wherever else my whim, wallet and corporate overlords take me. (I would have included a jaunt to Moscow and St. Petersburg too except that it turns out that Russia really, really does not want visitors and makes getting a visa expensive and difficult just like in the good old Intourist days.) So anyway not to worry - you'll be in the good hands of the usual bunch of last minute AoS non-credentialed subs.

Quote of the Day I

"Your salary is a way to quantify what you're worth. If men are being paid a lot more for doing the same thing, it feels shitty."

She also brought up the difference in wages between her and "Iron Man" co-star Robert Downey Jr.

"Look, nobody is worth the money that Robert Downey Jr. is worth," she says. "But if I told you the disparity, you would probably be surprised."

-- Noted economist Gwyneth Paltrow

Quote of the Day II

Boy, there really are a lot of constitutionally illiterate pieces on the Second Amendment from academics lately. Here's a hint: There's a huge literature on this stuff. The Second Amendment wasn't badly drafted or unclear, it was drafted by smart men who knew exactly what they were trying to say; you just don't want to hear that. Your cocktail-party "insights" on the Second Amendment are neither interesting nor correct. This is Dunning-Krueger scholarship at its worst.

-- Glenn Reynolds

Quote of the Day III

Putin understands this all too well, and much of his UN speech was pitched directly at the consciences of these men and women. It was impossible not to chuckle at the strongman's chutzpah when, nearing his conclusion, Putin explained his hope to partner with other nations on an "issue that shall affect the future of the entire humankind"-climate change. In his recent 60 Minutes interview with Charlie Rose, Putin parried a question about the rule of law in Russia by invoking American race relations-a tried and true rhetorical gambit of the Soviet era

...Putin understands American liberals better than most of them understand themselves, and light-years better than they understand him. This is among the reasons their assessment of his motivations is so misleading and incomplete. By presenting his actions as essentially reasonable and defensive in nature, by continuing, humiliation after humiliation, to hope that Putin will one day be their partner, they fail to focus their analysis on the dark core of his beliefs, which are ironically the very traits they believe compromise American conservatism: toxic nationalism and neo-imperialism.

He's not trying that hard to hide it.

-- Aaron MacLean

Quote of the Day IV

Whenever I've written about these issues, I get a lot of e-mails from guys scoffing, "Oh, right, Steyn. Like you'd be taking a bullet. You'd be pissing your little girlie panties," etc. Well, maybe I would. But as the Toronto blogger Kathy Shaidle put it:

'When we say 'we don't know what we'd do under the same circumstances', we make cowardice the default position.'

I prefer the word passivity - a terrible, corrosive passivity. Even if I'm wetting my panties, it's better to have the social norm of the Titanic and fail to live up to it than to have the social norm of the Polytechnique and sink with it.

-- Mark Steyn

Quote of the Day IV - A New Evil Edition

What do the acolytes of the State want to ban this week? Which bootlace eyelet will they lubricate with eager spittle? Oh, the usual stuff. Fun. Your fun. Vox writer Dylan Matthews twittered his demands, and they're quite ordinary - except for one new requirement. See if you can spot it.

To the Left All Human Lives Are Equal But Some Lives Are Less Equal Than Others

There an argument going around among leftists that if pro-life people were really pro-life they'd be calling for guns to be banned instead of being all worked up over abortion. But as Bookworm points out there is an order of magnitude difference between the two:

Number of abortions performed in 2011 in the United States1,100,000

Number of homicides using guns in 2011 in the United States8,583

Also note that abortion is an act while guns are only a means to carry out an act. To make these comparable you'd have to call for a ban on scalpels, surgical vacuums and other medical instruments used in abortions. But then they'd argue that these are also used in to save lives too. Exactly. Just like guns are.

Vox's Matthew Yglesias Loves That Hillary Is a Shameless, Law Breaking, Dictator-in-Waiting

And no I'm not exaggerating - he basically comes right out and says this.

From her adventures in cattle trading to chairing a policymaking committee in her husband's White House to running for Senate in a state she'd never lived in to her effort to use superdelegates to overturn 2008 primary results to her email servers, [Hillary] Clinton is clearly more comfortable than the average person with violating norms and operating in legal gray areas.

...Committed Democrats and liberal-leaning interest groups are facing a reality in which any policy gains they achieve are going to come through the profligate use of executive authority, and Clinton is almost uniquely suited to deliver the goods. More than almost anyone else around, she knows where the levers of power lie, and she is comfortable pulling them, procedural niceties be damned.

...She truly is the perfect leader for America's moment of permanent constitutional crisis: a person who cares more about results than process, who cares more about winning the battle than being well-liked, and a person who believes in asking what she can get away with rather than what would look best.

Theodore Dalrymple: A Bien Pensant Pope

Dalrymple is not a fan of Pope Francis. And I do think he has Francis' number here.

After all, fundamental relationships do not call themselves into question: someone must do it in the name of some doctrine, some belief, or other. The Pope's resort to the passive mood is indicative of his moral cowardice in confronting the opponents of what the Church believes in. Those opponents he knows to be militant and aggressive, and to confront them openly, in so many words, would lead to his fall in the popularity polls. Therefore he evades the issue with vague and oily declamation. It is one thing to be peace-loving and conciliatory, it is another to surrender by means of avoidance of the issue.

...At every point, the Pope evaded specifics and resorted to unctuous generalities. No one ever courted unpopularity by denouncing injustice, but many risked much by being specific about what they considered, rightly or wrongly, unjust.

The Pope was against poverty in the way the preacher in the famous Coolidge anecdote was against sin. But while no secularist will speak up for poverty, the religious attitude has traditionally been more nuanced. Moreover, when the Pope spoke of 'the unjust structures' that exist 'even in the developed world,' he was presumably referring to the arrangements that lead to economic inequality. By doing so he was first making a fetish of wealth (for why else would inequality in itself be bad?) and second he was exciting one of the seven deadly sins, envy (the concentration on what others have irrespective of whether one has enough oneself). Of course, inequality may be unjust, but is not itself evidence of injustice. Evidence that it is so must be adduced independently, and this the Pope failed to do, preferring to court popularity while rocking no boats.

In short, the Pope was playing to a gallery and to a constituency, while wanting to be liked by everybody. There was nothing of timelessness in what he said but only of the temporal, the contingent, the fashionably platitudinous. He is not a shepherd, but one of the sheep.

CDR Salamander: The Russian Navy Breaks the Seal

This was only a matter of time, and we should realize that they just started down a path we first travelled in our first combat use of land attack cruise missiles; 1991.

...The SS-N-30A is, in many ways, a superior weapon - and more flexible weapon - than our TLAM. This should not be shocking. We have been complacently living off the hard work of the 1970s for awhile.

This actions by the Russians is significant, but in this way. We were hesitant in using our TLAM, but when we finally did, we became rather fond of it.

The Russians have broken the seal on its use, and I think they will like it. Why not? For the last quarter century the USN has set a global norm on the use of this one-way armed drone. We have no room at all to argue against it use. None.

Expect more use from Russia of this weapon.

Mark Steyn comments:

It's weird. The "denier" is in command of the facts, whereas the president of an organization specifically devoted to the subject appears to know nothing about it, but instead keeps drooling over and over about "the 97 per cent consensus".
By the way, that "97 per cent" nonsense is taken apart on page 295 of my book. It means 75 out of 77 more or less hand-picked scientists. So the "97 per cent consensus" is in fact a smaller number of scientists than the more than 120 I cite in my book, all of whom cheerfully put the boot in to Big Climate's poster child, the hockey stick.

How the hell do these people in Hollywood not see the ridiculousness of their griping about income disparity? Paltrow doesn't think she's obscenely overpaid? But it also happens to be a fraudulent number, used fraudulently. But people who are, if you will pardon the term, in complete *denial* about both the facts and the process.

and in the same way there is an argument that
certain thoughts can not be imagined because the language does not allow
the thought to be expressed.

Most common examples, that I can't remember, come from Australian
aborigines. Don't ask me to explain it or give you an example.

There
is a linguistics theory, which is followed by such wonderful elements
as neuro-linguistic theory, whatever gabble Noam Chomsky posits, and
whatever the one that came from watching the Navajo burn down their
houses with "empty" gas cans, that the words in a language shape
consciousness like a jelly-mold, with the reverse idea from this that
if you control the language and the words you control the minds.

There
is another school of thought (several really) that say 1) wow, too bad
for science fiction, then; and 2) that would mean there is no way to
bootstrap yourself out if serfdom, right?

If you believe (or
think it is useful to believe) that change is impossible or not
desirable, or can ever be really self directed, then you have every reason to
believe that words change reality.
If you believe that change is possible and inevitable then you look at societies that did change.

Carlo
Cipolla had a view that it was the cultural concepts were what were limiting:
if the concepts were the basis of your understanding and valuing
yourself in your society, stepping outside of those concepts is to
betray yourself and your society. In his book, Guns Sails and Empires,
he looks at the Turks and China's failure to adopt cannon in anything
but the most limited forms for a long time.
The Turks thought the cavalry and the
sword were the mark of a warrior, not projectile weapons. The Turks
viewed cannon as fortress smashers, and used them mostly in those roles.
The
Chinese were worse, in spite of having cast bronze and iron for a
thousand years, having invented gun-powder, and having the Jesuits in
Macao willing to teach them, they still couldn't cast useful cannon until after
the Boxer rebellion.
Part of that was due to the ruling elite being
chosen for prowess in poetry and arts, but the rest of it was due to the
worldview of China that discounted science and understandable change.

To understand the technology, they had to understand the science; to
understand the science they had to accept the foreign world view. To do
that was to be not-Chinese, and many very intelligent people could not
accept that conceptual leap.

Some of it is from a view of self that excludes
you from such thoughts - treating them like "Possum Stew"
concepts that are not only distasteful in themselves, but cheapening to admit to
having knowledge of them
Some of it is like facing the idea that challenges the view of the individual in society, like an entrenched bureaucrat conceptualizing privatization.

169 For my nuclear cardiac stress test, was in a group of about a dozen, all having the same test same time at the cardiodoc's office. We were processed in batches, like sheep. Wait to get called in, then the techs read me all the dire warnings and had me sign releases, then they injected me with a nuclear dye.

Go back out to the waiting room to, get this, wait some more. Get called back in about 20 minutes later to sit in a special x-ray chair and have pretty pics taken of the ol' ticker.

Back to the waiting room while the rest of the herd is similarly processed.

Get called back in eventually and get up on the treadmill to walk. Walk and walk as they raise the elevation and increase the pace, but still walking. At about 10 -12 -15 minutes have hit the targeted heart rate and they inject me with the nuclear dye again while on the treadmill. Then sit for 1 - 3 minutes to let dye circulate and get on the special x-ray chair again for more pretty pics.

Then back to the waiting room for 20 - 30 minutes to make sure I don't seize up and throw a rod. Collect my lollipop and then free to go after about 4 hours since arrival.

1) In the first scene he has a naval aviator tattoo, so I'm guessing he went Navy -> airlines and the addiction became a problem sometime after that.

2) Because humans aren't little computers. We have a great ability to rationalize all sorts of behavior. "I'm not an addict, I have it under control!" There's a reason that the first part of recovery programs is admitting that you have a problem.

You mentioned Cook and Doran/Zimmerman, there's also Stenhouse et. al. (2014) which asked a series of badly over-generalized questions, aggregated them, and applied the conclusion to propositions not asked. Prokopy (2014) was vague, small, and used mild statements to support stronger statements. There were several student papers and I think Oreskes published one, but she's basically a cartoon character.

Almost all of them ask questions like "do you think there's some anthropogenic content to warming, and that there has been warming since 1850," and then use positive responses in the abstract to support Chicken Little versions of their panic-mongering.

Damn near everyone agrees on those hopelessly vague and meaningless statements. Anyone who knows shit about the subject should be able to explain why they're meaningless (starting with the fact that this timescale starts with the Little Ice Age, and that the athropogenic content may be so small it's literally unmeasurable, possibly because CO2's atmospheric effect has reached "heat soak" and it's doing all it can in the space it has - and then there's the lag factor).

Basically the fraud is so huge and widespread that either a crapload of people are just plain evil, or just plain stupid, or both.

I mean, *all* of these make claims they don't support and are defended by professionals whose reputation *should* rest on accuracy and professionalism.

Does make one distrustful of these human critters.

191 It's about ticket sales, Gwyneth. People will go to a movie because RDJ is in it. Nobody is gonna go to the flick because Gwyneth Paltrow's in it. Also, you forgot to mention that Gwynnie has become known for saying a lot of patronizing, ignorant things on her blog. They could make some people NOT buy tickets to a movie that has her in it. That could cause the producers to take a few million off her paycheck.

Also, when People magazine announced that she was the "most beautiful woman in the world", she became a bit of a laughingstock, because, well, not even close. Other than being really, really skinny so that clothes hang on her just right, without makeup, she's no better looking than your average meth user from the trailer park.

We can afford them, it's just that the idea of "analyst" differs from the political hacks in the Pentagon and serious military analysts.

Even if it's competent, what good is it if the elites at the top don't want to hear what the analysts are saying? Obama called ISIS the "Jayvee Team" and "Al Qaida is on the run". Lower level analysts were threatened for less than sunny assessment about how we were doing against ISIS, and higher level hacks polished the turds to a fine sheen for Sir Golfsalot.

Have they taken an echocardiogram yet? My first stress test was chemical and in a CT machine, I was lying down for it. If you can barely walk they shouldn't even be talking about treadmills.

DO NOT BE AFRAID TO GO TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM. I'm not trying to panic you, it's just that a lot of people wait out really bad stuff they shouldn't.

And talk to your doctor about a CPAP machine (used for sleep apnea), they take significant load off your heart when you're sleeping.

Other than that, I don't know details about your case (and I'm not a doctor), so I can only pray that whatever it is, it's something they can fix and get you kicking again.

Gold standard is angiogram, actual camera into the heart. I think they can usually tell from CT scans and echocardiograms.

Heart attacks almost always result in visible scarring and discrete areas of dead tissue.

There are also chemical markers but they can fade over time (or mislead).

An EKG is more for realtime events, but I'm sure it does show changes in the way the heart beats which may be permanent.

I can see it now. The actor makes the odd commercial here and there for the next year, then gets a break and plays a rapist on SVU. Does well, and gets other guest shots on TV series'. Gets the lead in a low-budget Lifetime flick - no ratings, but industry people notice. Starts to get bigger and bigger supporting roles on HBO flicks. Gets a nice second banana role on a hit Showtime series. Breaks into mainstream films, and works his way up, sort of like Bogart. Heavies at first, but then older, leads. Gets a call one day from an 80 year old Spielberg, who's making his final masterpiece, say King Lear. Shows up to sign the contract, and someone pulls out this 30 year old spot. "Sorry, but...."

Mighty curious, isn't it, that two independent studies, using different methodologies, came up with exactly the same number? I guess if they had used 99 44/100%, people would have twigged onto the scam.

But bear with me a minute. If it were really true that nearly all practicing (and retired, for that matter) scientists were convinced of the truth of CAGW, we wouldn't even be having this discussion, because most likely we would accept it, too, just as we accept that the speed of light is circa 300,000 meters per second. And pay it no more thought.

We here all know the 97% figure is bullshit, and that it is being used to bolster a "theory" that is so wrong that it is easily disproved by our own personal experience, let alone historic data. And the fact that this "theory" is pushed almost exclusively by the Progressive Left, and that the so-called "remedy" amounts to a wet dream fro the Progressive Left is simply icing on the cake.

Logistics in the area are quite challenging. There are big mountains to the east and west, and the main north/south route -- I-5 -- does some serious rollercoasters (including the highest point on I-5). It wouldn't be my first choice for barging in where I'm not wanted.

I always interrogate them about what they say.

If you normally sleep on your back, try resting on either side and seeing if it helps you breathe.

It's subjective, but try to keep track of your condition. Always keep a phone with you.

If it's a blockage and they can fix it with surgery, there's a good chance it will be "sore but mobile the next day or the one after."

Good luck.

Shorter Dalrymple: pope is a cowardly authoritarian illiterate bigot who uses his perch to spread toxic nonsense no less vile than that of the street mob driven by envy and avarice.

We are decades, if not more, beyond the point where there is any excuse for infantile moral narcissism on the topic of economic equality. Natural economic behavior (some call it capitalism) is the onlyreason that poverty is not the norm in great swaths of the world's population. It is the only reason (OK, potable urban water supplies, you can toss that in) that the developed world has the surplus to so generously help the truly needy (this would include every cent the Church dispenses).

Campanero Jorge came along after serious, rational observers had lost their patience with degrading, impoverishing, freedom-destroying crap being spewed by institutions with inertial"prestige". Which leaves the majority to coo and marvel at his, well whatever it is they find interesting or positive.

Putin. No need to explore how the less perceptive among us - who now run the country and culture - cannot understand him. Same as with any other important topic. They didn't earn the description "clueless" without reason.

But finding ultra-nationalism and imperialism in Russian thuggishness in Ukraine (essentially an integral part of Russia for over a millenium) and Syria (only extra-territorial client state remaining, vintage of nearly 50 years) is interesting.

Russian reach and influence today are at a low point not seen since a Swedish king dominated its region, excluding the chaos of the war/revolution/civil war period.

Which is why my 'umble self thinks Cruz would have better served to do something along the lines of:

Cruz: 97% of *all* scientists.

Mair: Yes.

Cruz: Which paper are you citing as reference for this?

Mair: 97% of all ...

Cruz: Again, what is the name of the scientific paper you are citing for this 97% number?

Mair: ...

Cruz: If you can't cite a piece of research, why are you certain in that awfully specific number?

Mair: (*consults with lackeys*)

Mair: 97% of climate scientists agree.

Cruz: So you are incapable of citing a single paper to back that number?

Mair: 97% of climate scientists agree.

Cruz: Mr. Mair, you aren't a scientist, let alone a climate scientist, you don't read the literature, and you can't cite a single paper in support of your reflexive comment to this committee. You'll have to forgive me for coming to the conclusion that you don't know what you're talking about.

And though there is no way of knowing for sure, one could reasonably assume that use of the Russian systems would indeed be a happy time in intel circles. First look at these things actually being used.

And - though in this case I *do* doubt it is the case any longer - for many years the mishaps suffered en route by a few of the rounds (4, I think)would definitely have been a bonanza. As in, chance to retrieve actual hardware (unless they were set for impact detonation to prevent salvage). Somehow I lack confidence that the old spirit and determination are still there.

buzzion, I'd add in the "pause" - more accurately, the 19 years of high-confidence data showing no temperature increase. Since all data prior to that suffers from lots of limitations even before it has been distorted, er, changed, er, "adjusted".

And some appropriate mockery of the (predictable) panic and silliness of the AGW industry in attempting to explain the "pause", reaching Peak Idiocy in the "idea" that the heat was somehow hiding in the ocean depths.

Actually, water polo is boring to watch because 1) it generally moves slowly - the speed of guys doing heads-up freestyle, and the speed of a thrown ball, and 2) most of the "action" takes place under water (grabbing, elbowing, punching, pulling).

But you'll never be in shape like that again, if you played as a younger person.

POP, true. Beach volleyball is very hard, but sort of dull to watch. Full-team, indoor, hard-court can be very good, in the way that exciting team sports usually are: constant action, constant opportunity to score, tremendous swings in momentum and passion. Watching two high-end SoCal college volleyball teams battling it out in a small-ish gym/arena, everyone sitting close to the action, is as good a team sport experience as I've seen. Well except for the Soviet Central Army-Pitt. Penguins exhibition game back in '89.

Yeah ... I used to like classical Olympic volleyball - not as much as they would run it on TV, but it was fun. The beach stuff ... not so much. I know it's an incredibly difficult game (especially jumping in the sand and such) but I just can't stand to watch it for more than a minute or two.

I find many, if not most, of the new Olympic sports to be uninteresting. But I really stopped watching the Olympics intensely after that fiasco in Seoul. I had never seen a country cheat so blatantly and "proudly" as the Koreans. It was unbelievable. Others have cheated their asses off, but usually they tried to cover it up. But the Koreans ... man, they were so proud of how they were cheating. I lost all respect for South Korea and their culture after seeing that. It was jaw-dropping. So, I pretty much cut my Olympics viewing by 90% after that.

Dunno if Newt could - don't think we'll get to see, either - but really the problem is mostly with the Senate GOP. If, as I am reliably informed, the Senate Dems pulled what is really an unprecedented and outrageous move and simply shut down the appropriations process, then the filibuster should have been removed. Period.

The filibuster and all the other elegant mechanisms of gridlock the Senate has developed over our history served us well, until now. That the Senate GOP won't do what's needed to return to a minimal baseline of rule of law and constitutional governance - regular order in appropriations - basically confirms that they are not serious.

The only "shutdowns" that should be occurring or looming in games of chicken should be by agency (more specifically all govt. functions as grouped in the 12 appropriations bills).

Of course it would be hard, even for the tiny little brazen mediocrities of the Beltway GOP (elected and otherwise), to pretend to believe that there was political peril in leaving the EPA or IRS languishing under short-term CRs.

Anyway, Joe makes some, *gasp* anti-homosexuality comment. I don't remember the exact quote or the exact context, but his comment was based on homosexuality being a very bad thing, and this was just common sense and the default position of any decent society.

I laughed thinking of the shitstorm such a comment would cause today. Hell, the media would be on 24-hour wall-to-wall coverage mode, demanding everyone involved be fired and sent off to sensitivity training camp to be properly programmed. I'm sure Barky would have a primetime address about it.

Hell, I even wondered if MeTV would get some flack for it, but they didn't. I guess nobody in the media industrial complex noticed. It was only old farts like me who watch it.

The House could just use the current revenues and the expenditures from 1985 and walk. Let everything crash and burn if Leviathan can't live within what was outrageous deficit spending 20 years ago. There was waste, fraud, and abuse then -- that has never been rectified. The default budget for any year should be the expenditures from a prior year that didn't exceed current year revenues. How difficult is that?

332 Yep, I've come to the conclusion the filibuster has to go as well. I can't believe it, really, as the filibuster was a important tool against majoritarian overreach. But alas, the republic is in mortal danger, and the filibuster can be used against repealing, as well as passing legislation.

They need to do away with, at least for appropriation bills. They can still allow a real talking filibuster. If you're gonna do it, the by God, you're gonna stand up there and hold the floor for real. Get you catheters and piss bags ready and man up.

Hell, IIRC, ol' Strom Thurmond still holds the record. I remember he set up plans to take a shit on the senate floor if he had to. The rule was you had to stay on the floor, and he was going to do something where he kept one foot stuck out on the floor, through the door to one of the cloakrooms. His aide were going to hold up blankets around him, and he was going to shit in a bucket, with one foot sticking out technically on the floor.

But luckily, he didn't have to, sparing the republic that spectacle. But that's what a real filibuster involves.

There should be a baseline that pays off or repudiates the National Debt in a generation. 30 years, zero debt. That's where things should start.

Quite a bit of the recent horror has been a vain attempt to make this unimaginable. Obama has spent more money than anyone else in the entire history of mankind -- most of it foolishly. Since nobody could possibly raise anywhere near the money he has pissed away, much was borrowed, with the clear idea that it would never be repaid. With a huge national debt, every baby born comes into this life with the yoke of slavery upon his or her neck -- debt slavery, to pay interest on the debts of his or her parents.

336 Gingrich led the effort to do, successfully, at least in substantial part, what we need to do now. Yes, Clinton took credit for it thanks to the lickspittle press.

Then again, Kasich was an important part of that process, and an impressive one, and now he's on the Redistribution Bandwagon.

Gingrich is also 72 years old.

I completely ignore the crap about how much the left hates him, that's a bonus. Hell, if they *didn't* that would be a disqualifier.

If he doesn't get in, he should be advising the person who does, in any case, especially in terms of how the late 90s went.

Either we're going to find a way to get a handle on the budget and abuses of power, or math will kill enough of us to balance the ledger.

And with nukes all over Asia pointed at each other, that could turn into an *awfully* big number.

No funding to implement any aspect of O-care or amnesty. Period. (yeah yeah "self-funding" BS for O-care- plenty of damage can be done thru appropriations).

Active oversight, to include elimination or conditioning of appropriations, to end abusive and illegal behavior in IRS, EPA, and DOJ. No leash whatsoever, these agencies on punitive parole.

Concrete steps to begin long overdue management of rogue, lawless judicial branch, to include specific eliminations of jurisdiction and funding cuts. Begin process to reform judiciary to end lifetime appointments.

Reversal of lawless executive "law-making" such as that which gutted welfare reform or is now destroying the coal-powered electricity industry. As in every other area, extremely aggressive appropriations posture to enforce compliance and punish defiance.

This is really just the minimum. Compare these to Brat's list.

Clinton still wanted to work and he acknowledged many of the traditions and customs of governing. Barky has no use for any of them. barky feels himself bound by nothing and dowsn't give a shit about anything. The only way to deal with Barky (other than impeachment, which is the only real and appropriate way) is to never pass anything he wants, keep putting shit on his desk that he'll veto (over and over and over) and to restrict the money he has access to - severely restrict it. If Barky wants to shut the government down (even the 18% shutdown) then it has to happen and Barky must be the one who has to give in (or, as said before, be impeached and tossed).

Dealing with Barky is like dealing with arabs. There is no goodwill in their culture so there is nothing to even try to get in that respect. All they understand is force and all they will ever respect is someone beating the living shit out of them. Barky is perfectly happy to destroy everything - as that destruction has been his main goal from the beginning - and he can only be dealt with by forcing an unconditional surrender from him or getting him to go so far that even the cowardly treasonous douchebags in the Vichy GOP start considering his impeachment.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at October 09, 2015 02:47 AM (zc3Db)

341 As I've noted before, every separate appropriations bill should pay the Secret Service for 10 days and note that it is not eligible for continued funding in "an emergency". If we're closing National Parks, POTUS should certainly be cowering in some closet somewhere -- or paying for his own damned security. Air Force 1 should also be given the lowest possible priority as far as "Emergency Services".

You're not wrong, POP. And I think my off-hand list above is the boring concrete expression of what you're saying - or could be.

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

It's all about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

That is Congress' constitutional power, above all. They simply have refused to use it. The majority has literally and of course consciously (if implicitly) acquiesced in the effective elimination of that power. Pretty stunning, if you have any experience or memory of how things were (always) up until just recently.

Oh - and the proper, and proportionate, response to the Senate Dems' outrageous packing of the DC circuit court with alien fascists (wherein they ended the filibuster) should be refusal to approve ANY more judicial appointees. Should have been the policy since Day One of this new Congress, in fact.

It wasn't always, but now it's just a knife fight in a dark alley, the other side has repellent intolerable goals and absolutely no integrity or standards in how they reach them. The country's position and future are already seriously damaged. Sadly the GOP pretty much reflects the ignorance, passivity, and cowardice of most Americans in the face of this calamity. Hard to see how the ship gets turned around.

349 Re "automatic pilot": This guarantees that spending (and the debt) will be growing exponentially. We note things like Obama will have run up more debt during his 8 years than all all presidents before him. This is a consequence of exponential growth.

Consider the geometric series of the "rice on the chessboard" parable. You put one grain on the first square, then double it with each successive square. 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, etc. You will note the each step adds 1 more than the sum of all previous squares. 4 is (1 + 2) + 1. * on the fourth square is (1 + 2 + 4) + 1.

The doubling period for federal spending and the debt is somewhere under 8 years, corresponding nicely with the the tenure of a two-term president.

Exponential growth is just something the human mind has trouble grasping. It wants to imagine linear growth. What kills you is the last steps. It seems like nothing to start with, but gets out of hand and kills you before you realize what's happening.

Dang, rickl, you're right! I forgot. Instant and total obliteration of the "sanctuary city" nonsense. That one's easy.

ODMom, I respect Brat and I mean nothing negative. It just strikes me that his list is SO tepid, it is a pretty depressing indicator of where things stand.

Nothing on my list is radical, or "extreme". Most of it was SOP up til a few years ago. Most people (understandably) have no idea how far off the rails things are, in terms of process and basic constitutional balance.

Courts that legislate, a president that legislates and chooses which laws to obey, and a Congress that rubber-stamps insane fiscal policies and sucks its thumb while its powers and prerogatives vanish in the breeze.

Til tomorrow, friends in the little grey box .....

357 You're not wrong, POP. And I think my off-hand list above is the boring concrete expression of what you're saying - or could be.

I think your list was excellent. I'd love to see ace do a post on it, to get those specifics more time in the public arena.

Hard to see how the ship gets turned around.

I'm really very pessimistic in this respect. I don't really think there is a way to recover the Constitutional Republic in this nation. I have long thought that national divorce and the establishment of a new American Constitutional Republic is the only way ... and I am still of that mind. But, until we come to that action, your recommendations (and other actions by Congress to defend the Constitution and its constraints - which would also include impeaching SCOTASS justices who are just totally batshit insane ... though I hold out zero hope of this ever happening) are the only chance, if one still exists.

The combination of the destruction of trust by having our laws stomped on by everyone in power (stomped on by some, allowed by others who enjoyed watching the stomping) and made a total mockery of, combined with the our serious and potentially fatal fiscal and monetary problems, doesn't really make for an environment for optimism regarding a restoration of America. Both of those issues are so serious and so dangerous and they've both been totally abused and publicly rejected (the Rule of Law and the ideas of fiscal and monetary sanity) that's it's near impossible for me to see them healed in this nation that killed them so blithely and gleefully, if that combination is even possible

360 A lot could be repaired if we had a speaker that had guts to use what the constitution gave them. But as I've wrote before if congress can't stop giving money to a organization who kills baby's in holocaust proportions they can't really stop anything.

I've been to St. Pete. When we went -- which was the maybe the friendliest period in my lifetime -- the Schengen guys got in with a half-page visa application while the US and UK had a four page application that included any college degrees earned by our parents. Russia is all about using the process as the punishment.

374 Gwyneth, Pepper Potts was always a red head in the comics, so rightfully the part should really have gone to Amy Adams. As it is, you're eminently replaceable in a way that Downy is not.

Replacing Downey would be like the first time they had to recast Bond after Sean Connery quit. Replacing you, on the other hand, would be more on par with replacing Moneypenny, M, or Q. Those actor held out until they shoveling dirt on them because they'd never get another gig as lucrative for how little they had to do. And just think, quitting the Iron Man franchise would free you up for another entry in the Sky Captain series. Real Soon now.
