Supporters of the Export-Import Bank have secured enough Republican support to bring an extension of the agency's charter to the House floor later this month, according to sources involved in the whipping. More than 30 Republicans have signed on to a discharge petition, which would force a vote on reauthorizing the government-backed credit agency. Republicans expect at least a dozen more supporters. The vast majority of Democrats are expected to sign the discharge petition, a rarely invoked procedural maneuver that sidesteps the committee process. A renewal of the bank's charter would likely come to the floor after Oct. 21. There has not been a successful discharge petition since the McCain-Feingold campaign finance legislation passed in 2002. The Society of Professional Journalists is to blame for this tragedy as much as the NRA. The kid was a publicity seeker and his crimes were motivated by a desire to gain fame. The SPJ has blood on its hands for irresponsibly using its First Amendment freedom to publicize these atrocities to inspire and compel the next shooter. Recall all the bitchin' yesterday on the Russian airstrikes in Syria against McCain's pals, because of using awful 'dumb' bombs instead of America 'precision' weapons? Whoops!: A US airstrike in Afghanistan may have killed three staff members of the medical aid organization Doctors Without Borders, according to the charity. The organization shared photos of a trauma center in Kunduz that was set on fire after a bombing on Saturday morning on its Twitter page and said that three staff had died and 30 were unaccounted for after the incident. NATO later issued a statement saying that it had conducted an airstrike at 2.15am local time, and that it 'may have resulted in collateral damage to a nearby medical facility'. http://tinyurl.com/og7fuhs Airstrikes killed nine staff workers of medical aid group Doctors Without Borders in the Afghan city of Kunduz, the charity said. U.S. forces said they conducted airstrikes in the area. At least 37 people were injured in the aerial bombings early Saturday, including 24 of the medical aid organization's staff, said the group known internationally as Medecins Sans Frontieres. I received a request this morning in my private messages at Twitter. Our old pal, Juliette Ochieng, aka 'Baldilocks' has been having a helluva a time of it. Heck, I follow her on Twitter and never even knew what she's been going through. In any case, she finally has a little place of her own but is just about to lose all of her personal belongings which were stored away in the interim. She's desperately trying to pay her pubic storage bill before the auction this morning. You can donate to the cause, here: http://bit.ly/1ONBq0e or, if you like the retro look, and I think it's pretty cool, she has her old console stereo for sale on Craigslist: http://bit.ly/1j6eTPv If you feel so inclined, I'm sure she would appreciate the help. IrishEi, I'm twelve blocks up from that address, 87th St and 35th Ave. You wouldn't recognize the place now. Hell, I moved here in January of '85 and I don't recognize the place. When I first came here, it was German/Irish/Jewish neighborhood, now mostly Hispanic (from just about every Spanish speaking country). Oh, and hysteric Jackson Heights was one of the first 'gay' neighborhoods; we even have our own LGBTQWERTY parade (where they paint a stripe down the middle of 37th Ave a delicious lavender). We also have a radical mosque in the neighborhood, too, one that's made the news in the past.
I remember a story from a few years ago about a lesbian couple who were walking along 37th Ave and harassed by some muzzie for being lesbians. Caused a bit of a stink. You'd think gays would figure out the muzzies hate them but instead we get shit like 'Gays For Palestine'. Posted by: RickZ at October 03, 2015 07:54 AM (dcIVz) 80

I cant believe people defend this guy Prieto they executed in Virginia. He murdered 9 people. In Virginia he kidnapped a young couple shot the guy, the girl ran, shot her in the back and then raped her while she died. Raped and killed a 15 y/o in California. Was here illegally from El Salvador. He was not mentally retarded as the nutters claimed. The courts do not have to entertain endless appeals. RickZ: Wow. Only lived there for a couple of years. We moved from the upper West Side where I was born and raised (long before Jerry Seinfeld gentrified it.) Jackson Heights was as you described (German-Irish-Jewish) and a big improvement over the drug and gang infested area of Manhattan we moved from.
When we were in JH in the 70s, the problem appeared to be Colombian drug dealers. My parents finally decided to move out when there was a drug-related double murder in their building. I thought that most of the people moving in were Indian at the time, but looking back, and realizing that I knew absolutely nothing about the Middle East and Islam then, so I'm guessing they weren't Indian after all. The Porsche lawsuit is the deep pockets gambit coupled with emotions.
Physics don't care about emotions. Car impacted an immovable object at a high rate of speed and suffered a catastrophic failure. To design a Porsche to survive such a rare failure would require turning the car into a tank. But here is the real downer, even tanks can suffer catastrophic failures that kill the crew. Listening to Fox while driving to the airport this AM, I heard the Huckster make the excellent point (often made here as well) that Utah and Texas, two states with the highest rates of gun ownership, also have the lowest rates of gun homicide, while California, Illinois and New Jersey, all with terribly restrictive gun laws, have some of the highest.
Lefties say that's because you can buy guns in other states. But how is that even a rational response? It doesn't address the evidence (low rates in high gun ownership states) and it's nonsensical to punish inoffensive gun owners in Idaho for Newark's violence anyway. What is obvious is that the Blue social model has failed. Just like everything else about Progressivism, foreign policy, economics, centralized government generally, the Blue model in Newark or Chicago leads directly to gun violence. If people want to end mass shootings, those people should inculcate conservative values in their kids and advocate Red policies in their towns. Mostly, anyone against gun violence should vote against Democrats. Pretty straightforward. Posted by: MTF at October 03, 2015 08:25 AM (TxJGV) 104

IrishEi, back in the late '80s, there was a serious cocaine problem here. There was one time a body bodies dumped from moving car as it turned a corner. One man, Manuel de dios Unanue, ran a newspaper called El Crimen, which took on the drug dealers. He was assassinated while sitting in a bar on 83rd St near Roosevelt. The hit man came all the way from Colombia; he was caught. Also, there used to be a restaurant down around 78th St and Roosevelt called Chibcha Restaurant, which was more of a nightclub. A night there for a couple could easily cost $200-300 dollars. Back in the late '80s, I was watching some football on tv from Medellin with my ex MiL. Next to the goal was an advertisement for 'Chibcha Restaurant of Jackson Heights'. Now why would a restaurant in Jackson Heights have ads at a football game in Medellin? And just who from Medellin would travel to a restaurant in Jackson Heights?
There was a guy from Argentina who had opened a laundromat on 85th St and 37th Ave. He had on the sign the logo of a team from Argentina called Huracán, a hot air balloon. He was shot and killed right on the sidewalk in the afternoon in broad daylight (his blood was on a parking meter for a while). I never heard the reason why although I assume he didn't want to launder drug money. Fun times. Posted by: RickZ at October 03, 2015 08:29 AM (dcIVz) 107

Walker suffered a broken jaw, collar bone, elbow, several broken ribs, a broken pelvis and a spinal fracture. There were traces of soot in his trachea, meaning that he was briefly still alive when the fire started, but the report indicates that both men died within seconds of impact. http://goo.gl/c2b5Rc ---------- Alive for seconds. ___________________ The lawsuit alleges that the car was defective because it didn't have a crash cage and a racing fuel cell. Basically, the daughter is saying it should have been designed as a race car. But it wasn't a race car, it was a passenger car that was being driven on a public street as if it were a race car, at speeds of over 100 mph (LA investigators estimated the speed on impact at 94 mph). AP's story about the killer - the headline is Army dropout then:
Christopher Sean Harper-Mercer wore a flak jacket and brought at least six guns and five ammunition magazines to the school. Investigators found another seven guns at the apartment he shared with his mother. Yeah, the Army and guns that's what made him do it. he was fascinated by the Irish Republican Army and frustrated by traditional organized religion. Frustrated? Sounded more like he hated it. There is one sentence buried in the middle of the story about him asking people if they are Christian. The MFM will spin this as a gun nut even though the real reports are he singled out Christians to kill. Posted by: TheQuietMan at October 03, 2015 08:41 AM (DiZBp) 122

What shore and what changes?
Posted by: Obnoxious A-Hole at October 03, 2015 08:22 AM ~~~ Jersey Shore--is there any other? :-) The public elementary school in my town is about 70% non-English speaking students, so most of the local kids go to the Catholic school in the area. It's a strange situation because, being a beach town, homes are rented on a seasonal basis. You can get a 4-bedroom Winter rental which runs from Labor Day to Memorial Day for about $1,000/month. Then that same home will rent for perhaps $20,000 to $30,000 for the Summer (Memorial Day to Labor Day.) So these families move in after Labor Day, send their kids to school here. Where they go for the summer, I have no idea. Nearby Asbury Park (which never recovered from the riots of the 60s,) has had a huge influx of gays from New York. Most of the locals are very happy with this since they are purchasing lots of the (formerly) beautiful old Victorian homes that were sadly turned into drug infested rooming houses, and renovating them to their former glory. They have also rejuvenated the Asbury Park commercial area and there are many great restaurants and shops popping up. And slowly but surely, the gays are replacing the obscenely corrupt local government there. At the same time, there are several storefront mosques that have appeared, seemingly overnight, and more than a few halal butchers. Even a pizza shop with a "halal" sign in the window. The Porsche lawsuit is just the latest in the attack on Volkswagon.
VW is being investigated for "cheating" the emissions testing on their diesel models, even though VW did the testing exactly how the regulations are written (like every other auto maker on the planet). The "rank & file" at VW has refused to unionize in North America. The UAW (Usually Ain't Workin'), & the obama administration (BIRM) is all pissed off about that fact. All the shit that is being leveled at VW (& their subsidiary Porsche) is a direct result of their refusal to unionize. Posted by: AltonJackson at October 03, 2015 08:49 AM (ZQfW9) 135

curious anomalies concerning the black shooter who killed white students. 2 battery's, I guess needed to turn over the engine?
Not uncommon with diesels. It's the high compression ratio. Incidentally, for ethanol to produce its potential energy, you need a similar compression ratio. Can be done with a variable supercharger, but not back in the day. The batteries were not the problem. There's just no reason to think that an otherwise pretty-good gasoline V8 would perform well as a diesel. And yes it's true, GM built some awesome diesels. There's no evidence of engineers from their diesel divisions having anything to do with the morphodite. Sad chapter. Posted by: Stringer Davis at October 03, 2015 09:11 AM (xq1UY) 177

BTW, there was an article in the NYT (I think) last week, by some woman writing about how she was re-discovering her Muslim faith and celebrating EID (or whatever they call it). She wrote about how she called local Muslim butchers, but they didn't want to help her. Told her "we only do business we people we know." So, hint, hint, we're not going to do business with some random person off the street who might be setting us up for a lawsuit by the Gaystapo. When you get out of the Mid Atlantic states there are plenty of other Shores. Here I am going to go off on one of my rants directed at posters who refer to "The City". In Great Britain and most of the Commonwealth, The City refers to the financial district of London which has become a lot more important in recent years thanks to Sarbanes-Oxley. In the Chicago, New York and San Francisco areas people refer to the local metropolis as "The City". I suppose that there are plenty of other places around the world where people refer to their local city as The City. On this forum we have people from all over North America plus some occasional posters from Australia, Europe, Israel and for all I know from Asia and Africa as well. Referring to your nearby City as the City or The City just makes you appear parochial and ignorant of the larger world rather than sophisticated. OK. Rant over. I remember the Jersey Shore when I was a kid. We used to go to Point Pleasant and I remember a gift shop made out of an old sailing ship, the "Lucy Evelyn". There was also a WW I era concrete ship beached on some sand bar about a mile or so offshore. Nice white sand beaches with all sorts of interesting things for a kid to see like horseshoe crabs, dried up jellyfish, clams you could dig up when you saw their air holes when the waves went out and once a little shark that I was told was a dog fish. I knew some band members who were based on the Jersey Shore and who would go on the road every summer when the rents went up and when there were more gigs at state and county fairs around the country. I haven't been back there in a long time. I have heard that it is a lot more built up and has been for years. Posted by: Obnoxious A-Hole at October 03, 2015 09:29 AM (QHgTq) 205

The wife and I tried that last month - first time in 30 years - and neither of us could understand the attraction. We say Mission Impossible 3. It was incredibly loud to the point of being uncomfortable. The big screen experience didn't really register with us, so I'm sure we won't be back. With the screen sizes available in the home and the quality sound systems that go with it, the theaters would have to pay me to get me to sit through another movie there. I'd like to thank The Times, for Modern Man. I have a feeling we'll be referencing him for a long time, and he certainly illustrates the warped perception of the modern left.
I was surprised at two parts, in particular: 1- the heteronormative nature of several points, assuming modern man had a wife 2- modern man looking for a parking spot, instead of using public transportation. Light rail, buses, biking, or driving an all-electric car, at worst. Posted by: Grimaldi at October 03, 2015 10:03 AM (1eYr7) 246

Recently saw 'the Rock' in 'San Andreas'. Pretty decent special effects. 'Everest' was good but would be awesome on an imax size screen. There's one scene where they have to cross a 20 foot wide ravine, with a hundred plus foot drop, on an aluminum stepladder that would be bloodcurdingly scary on a big screen. Sorta like paper gold IYKWIM. The book is full of itself but makes good points. I wouldn't doubt Prince Charles had it commissioned himself. The only problem I have with people who think Obama is The Antichrist, or the ones that think Prince Charles is The Antichrist is the belief that there can be only one.

Posted by: Obnoxious A-Hole at October 03, 2015 09:29 AM Perhaps. But only in Jersey are you "down" the Shore. You never go "to" the Shore, and are never "at" the Shore. You are only down the Shore or going down the Shore. And besides, how many other "shores" have their own television show (albeit cast with Bennies from Staten Island.) ~~~ Referring to your nearby City as the City or The City just makes you appear parochial and ignorant of the larger world rather than sophisticated. Posted by: Obnoxious A-Hole at October 03, 2015 09:29 AM Oh really? I do believe I've been insulted! Well, Mr. Sophisticated A-Hole, I am hardly ignorant of the larger world and rather well traveled. I have seen many, many cities including, but not limited to: Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Tokyo, Beijing, Paris, London, Sydney, Dublin, Amsterdam, Munich, Zurich, Innsbruck, Caracas, Valparaiso, Mexico City, etc. I have no problem with others referring to their nearby city as The City because I am secure in the knowledge that New York is the only true CITY. I have seen many others and they just don't measure up. And as real New Yorkers know, while New York is made up of five boroughs, the CITY is actually just Manhattan. Point of fact: I went to high school in the Bronx, but lived in the CITY. And unlike you, I don't think of the others, like you, (who are obviously quite sophisticated,) as parochial or ignorant. I think of them as unfortunate souls making do with the city life dealt them. Vatican says Pope did not give support to US clerk in gay marriage row
Looking to limit controversy after last week's meeting in Washington between the pope and Kim Davis, Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said she was one of "several dozen" people who had been invited by the Vatican ambassador to see Francis. "The Pope did not enter into the details of the situation of Mrs. Davis and his meeting with her should not be considered a form of support of her position in all of its particular and complex aspects," Lombardi said in a statement. http://preview.tinyurl.com/qxmc5lj (pope francis also walked back a controversial photo-op with a poster calling for UK-Argentina negotiations about the Falklands. I blame lying leftist media most ... at least at the moment after watching ABC I think it was. They said Mercer hated blacks, and in covering his question on religion, said if they answered "Christian", he told them they'd see their God soon. They didn't say he shot those Christians in the head, others in the leg.
It left the impression maybe he was a Christian with issues. Not sure where they got that he hated black men, but relevant to this case is that he singled out Christians for execution. I think that's confirmed be multiple sources, but maybe not. And the conservative Republican thing .. sounds more like he was a Irish Republican, more Marxist than conservative. But the MFM has their narrative to push, and facts must be buried. Posted by: Illiniwek at October 03, 2015 10:40 AM (I6695) 293

They didn't say he shot those Christians in the head, others in the leg. The MFM is going to spin the shit out of this to make it fit the agenda. Back when I was 26 I was making 8.50/hr at the only place in town that was hiring while a single room apartment ran for 600+/month. He was evidently a loner and a loser not because he lived at home but because he was a cold blooded murderer. I was Nip Sip who said he was a loser because he was "retarded" and lives at hime. My point was that I know young people who are at home because they are unemployed or underemployed-a feature of the Obama economy, not because they are "retarded". i.e. intellectually deficient. More people are killed per month by doctors and nurses than are killed by spree killers over years. Google it and do research. Gun control is being pushed because some-people (SP) in authority have been very bad. SP are afraid what will happen when the FSA and others find out they are going to pay for what SP did. Things certainly do change through the generations, and change really fast in some. I'm always pointing out to people that if my grandfather had come home one day and said, "Mother, I've just gotten a really good job," she'd have fainted dead away because that would have meant they'd lost the farm.
Only a hundred years ago, if you didn't live with your parents, it meant to anyone watching that either you or your parents had something seriously wrong with them. In farm families and successful business families, when you got married they built a new wing on the house, or another cottage in the compound. After WWII, corporate success became the only standard of success, it became sexy to move for your job, and we all got The Wandering Disease. Live whatever life you have to, but "You suck because you're near your parents" is right down there with "Your city is a shit-hole, but the one I'm short-mortgaged in for 3 to 5 while my cubicle contract runs out is the Center of The Universe." How often we presume that the way we are living right now is the only way to live, and that other people's arrangements are either quaint or kinky. We really are creatures of fashion, in that regard at least. Not one of our more attractive traits. Posted by: Stringer Davis at October 03, 2015 11:32 AM (xq1UY) 380

I don't want to know the truth. Just as I don't want to see a dog throw up. What I do want. I ask God to remove the Psychopaths responsible for this madness from my life. I ask God for a nation of free men and women who are governed by their conscience. That have freely chosen leaders and judges. Not the corrupt decaying empire we currently have. Only a hundred years ago, if you didn't live with your parents, it meant to anyone watching that either you or your parents had something seriously wrong with them. In farm families and successful business families, when you got married they built a new wing on the house, or another cottage in the compound. Posted by: Stringer Davis at October 03, 2015 11:32 AM (xq1UY) Exactly so. Extended families living under one roof were the norm for most of human history. I think it was the rise of the youth culture and the sexual revolution that started the idea that you needed to move out the moment you turned 18. My dad lived with his parents until he joined the Navy at age 20 in 1940. He fought in WWII, then got out in 1946 and moved back into his parents' house. It was only after he got a job and got married that he bought a house of his own. I don't think anybody would have considered him a loser at the time. With today's economy and crushing student loan debt, I think we're going to be seeing more and more 26 year olds living with their parents. What other choice do they have? They're not all losers; they've been robbed. Posted by: rickl at October 03, 2015 11:44 AM (sdi6R) 386
But without the modern man your cantaloupe, watermelon and honeydew won't be uniformly shaped.
