Overnight Open Thread (2 Oct 2015)

Time to talk about gun free zones. Yes indeed.

Lone gunmen have a fondness for places where victims won't shoot back.

Peace Prize

Nobel Prize rumors put focus on Kerry-Iran craziness. After Obama got one for just being elected, they might as well do this too. The award means nothing now anyway.

Selfies

Selfies have killed more people this year than sharks.

News Bloopers

Drunk Sailor Story

Not true but entertaining. Sailor did NOT use raccoon to bypass breathalyzer.

Laser Razor

Hmmmm. Using a laser to shave.

In other laser news, supposedly this vagina laser will improve your sex life. It'll only cost $1,150 per treatment and they recommend 3 to 4 of 'em.

VSPOT, a ladies-only spa that recently opened on the Upper East Side, uses a new FDA-approved fractional CO2 laser, dubbed the "FemiLift," to increase circulation and lubrication while tightening the area, all of which can improve a woman’s sex drive, according to VSPOT CEO Cindy Barshop.

More Iconic Movie Quotes

Fast And Furious

Don't seem to recall the President jumping up to the mic to talk about these guns. Two illegal aliens using Fast And Furious weapons (provided by the Obama administration) convicted in killing of Border Patrol agent Brian Terry.

Syria

Russia action in Syria is 'recipe for disaster' says the guy that let Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya fail and whose foreign policy has been a disaster everywhere except for his one victory in giving Iran everything they wanted.

Remote Weapon System

I think I need a few of these for the house. Remote-controlled weapon system augments soldiers on perimeter guard.

While just about any gun system can be mounted on the tower, the two Scott pointed out were fitted with a Browning M-2 50-caliber machine gun and a 338 Lapua sniper rifle.

The weapons can be raised, lowered, rotated by 360-degrees and fired remotely, he said.

The raccoon story rang false. From experience, if you find a raccoon in a park and if you are able to catch it, you'll have the heaping helping of scratches and bite marks before you come within a country mile of your car.

A raccoon in a park is looking for one thing - to go through each and every trash can for food - and woe unto him who tries to make one do otherwise.

This is bullshit. Freezing is the natural reaction to danger. It's hardwired into us. It wasn't some commie plot to weaken the ULTRAMASCULINE AMERICAN MALE.

We're descended from apes who were not the apex predators, and who were hunted by predators who often tracked prey by motion. Freezing makes sense. Even in modern times, a large crowd can be held at bay because no one wants to be the one who dies. Sure, you could try and rush the guy, but in their minds that way leads to sure death, while hanging back offers the hope of surviving. And some people are simply in shock. Hell, when the Germans were executing Norwegian men in punishment for partisan attacks, often the men simply stood there too stunned to do anything. Their minds couldn't cope with what was happening to them.

The reason that the military trains it's people in sudden, overwhelming violence is to try and overcome millions of years of evolution when it comes to conflict. Even then, it's hit or miss.

We're getting a shit-ton of high winds, rain and tidal flooding of roads here in Long Neck, DE. I left our place early this afternoon to run some errands and within an hour of my leaving, I was getting the wave-off from the missus regarding driving back into our trailer park because the waters in the bay had risen that fast.

So I took my time, but finally, after having been out and about for over four hours and tiring of it, I said screw this and did the white-knuckled quarter mile drive over the flooded road into our place. It's funny how much pushing through about six inches of water for that distance can slow you down.

Anyway, back home now and listening to the howling winds outside.

124 Watched a funny movie tonight, "What We Do in the Shadows", a mockumentary. Viago, Vladislav, Deacon, and Petyr are vampire flatmates sharing a house in Wellington NZ. They represent all the classic vampire styles: we have a Regency fop, a classic Vlad the Impaler, a peasant, and a cadaverous Nosferatu. They have all the same mundane problems roomies have, like bitching about whose turn it is to do the dishes, plus things like cleaning up blood stains from spurting arteries or sweeping up remains after a fatal sunlight leak. They have nights out on the town, mix it up with a rival pack of werewolves, and attend the annual Unholy Masquerade. One of their crew makes the mistake of inviting his tasty human friend as his Plus One and it gets the vamps and zombies slavering.

Posted by: Willy J. at October 02, 2015 10:32 PM (GfSPN)

The way shelter in place was explained to me was "secure your area and fight back against any attacker trying to get in" which I have no problem with.

You can encourage people to fight back, but you have to be realistic about how much of that will actually happen. Unless you're planning to put high schoolers through military style drills, you're probably not going to get a whole of success telling them to fight back. Sorry, just not going to happen.

That's not how they did it where I have been.

Army Command General Staff College - lock the door, hide and call for help, as a last resort find something to throw.

DC Navy Yard, even after the shooting - same thing.

-----------------

Nah...

It's this. "You go first."

The first guy up is the guy that's going to attract attention and get shot. Even if the rushers win, that first guy is still likely to be dead. There's an old story about Wyatt Earp facing down an angry lynch mob using just this logic. There were a lot of men in the mob. But Earp pointed out that the first guy to take a step toward him would get shot. Eventually the guys in the front walked away, followed shortly afterwards by the rest of the mob.

But if you can be the second guy, then you'll still be a hero. And your chances of getting shot are a lot lower.

Fighting back, moving while knowing you'll be hit, all the rest is what everyone used to learn when they played tackle football and other vigorous outdoor activities.

You are correct, today's youth have very little exposure overall to fights, conflict, and taking action knowing that you'll suffer pain. They can't be trusted to do much other than what earlier generations would expect out of a six year old.

Take tag away, criminalize conflict games (cowboys & indians, dodgeball), and have a drugged up student body whose only acceptable behaviour is that based on that of girls only - enforced solely by government-paid leftwing women - and yeah, you end up with mewling pussies that can't be trusted to defend themselves or others.

--------------------

Iran's been in there from the start. Syria has essentially been a client state of Iran for a while now, and the country has served as Iran's link to the rest of the world.

Getting rid of Syria's government would have been a good thing prior to the recent agreement (so long as the replacement wasn't worse, of course), as it would have essentially cut of Iran from *all* contact with the rest of the world. Unfortunately, the nuclear agreement will end Iran's isolation.

268 Assad and Syria has been having a tough time putting down the jihadis. They have been getting a lot of Hezbolla bodies helping them. And Iranian Qods force trainers and advisors (sort of what we used to do with Green Berets).

The jihadis have been threatening to take the war into Lebanon because of the Hezbollah participation. Israel whacked a car convoy of Iranian officers that were scouting the Syria Israeli border about a year ago. Killed an Iranian General and a bunch of others.

Now Russia is sending official Russian AF planes (as opposed to Russian pilots flying local planes like they did in Egypt from 1968-1972) AND Iran is sending their armed forces to provide ground support.

Be interesting to see if they do better than the Arab Syrian forces?

269 Thinking about the Chris Mintz GoFundMe, he's probably going to have a whole bunch of survivor's guilt and be encouraged by softass douchenozzles to walk away from it, but there is a fundamental point that really, really needs to be made.

This is a visceral outpouring from real people in the US. It is their heartfelt "attaboy" and encouragement to do likewise, backed by the sweat of their brow. I'm sure the other victims were good people; I'm sure it's a horrible tragedy that they died -- but the money is going to the guy who fought.

The American people, on a fundamental level, realize that we need more people who fight and not more people who die -- and send their encouragement accordingly. I'm not trying to be a coldhearted ass about this or be callous and unfeeling -- I was thinking "he's going to say this should go to the daughter of a mother who died at the scene" and started to ruminate over why his GoFundMe is rocketing while I haven't heard of hers.

Facts is facts. Dyin' comes way too easy. The success of Chris Mintz's GoFundMe is because people respect fighting for good more than dying for good -- and they want to reward and encourage it.

The other one wondered about this for a while, and told the first one she was going to go take a look.

When she was late coming back to her station, the first one got worried but then she showed up, with her hair and makeup messed up, and a few buttons missing from her blouse.

"What the hell happened to you?" she asked.

This is a fascinating Monte Carlo simulation that makes sense (ignoring nuclear war, being killed by an illegal alien, etc.). I think there is some sort of statistical mechanism going on that weights the first year more heavily but the succeeding years are pretty uniform for a while. I would not have expected that since I have heard several times that the longer you live, the more likely you are likely to live longer thus I would have thought there would be a pretty uniform probability density for years with a slow taper to 0 at the right-hand tail.

291 The storm currently battering the East Coast is actually a nor'easter, and is not related to Hurricane Joaquin which is still in the Caribbean. It's been raining here since yesterday afternoon, and it's also cold and windy.

It's a good thing that the hurricane is tracking out to sea. A direct hit on a portion of the coast that is already waterlogged would be very, very bad.

309 Bigfoot porn huh? This is weirder

At a message board I used to frequent, just after 9/11, we had one poster say that of course the attack was horrible but she thought that Osama bin Laden was kinda cute.

As you can imagine she got excoriated.

I wrote up the following little blub for her:

Excerpt from Kabul Nights by Aziz al-Hazzim, @2001, Beeline/Afghanistan Press, P 37. All rights reserved.

" Osama entered the candle-lit bunker quietly, leaning his Ak-74 against the wall as he looked at the recumbant form lying passively on the bed. Her dark eyes bored into his from beneith her veil, enflaming his senses like the fires from a thousand World Trade Centers. Her mighty breasts heaved with passion beneith the black chador she wore. Daringly, she extended her right foot, giving the Islamic stud a glimpse of her bare ankle. The sight of 2 inches of bare flesh caused Osama's heart to beat like the thunder of a thousand AK-47s, pounding away in a glorious Jihad against the infidels of the west. Languidly, she sat up, coyly whispering in a husky voice " Take me like you're going to take the Great Satan." His engorged member strained against the front of his robe, and a lewd smile escaped the confines of his dark beard. " My followers are reading my Scud missiles for attack," he purred, " But right now I'm going to show you how I use a 'Stud' missile." Passionately, he threw himself onto the bed and into her arms...."

Yea, it was a weird time. I still think it's funny tho, and damnit we NEEDED to laugh that week.

353 Raccoons are far from benign -- there was a story some years back where there was a raccoon latrine over a preschool sandbox in Santa Barbara. Two kids got some horrible brain-eating parasite that killed-em before people got wise.

Furthermore, it was just a few days back that an 'ette was reporting mysteriously decapitated chickens that ended-up being 'coons.

What's spooky is how well they've adapted to suburban environments. I was driving to the store one night about 11:00 pm and went to turn left at a demand light. I drove to the light, stopped, and waited for it to turn. When it did, I saw something leave the curb to cross the street with the signal to my right -- just as I started my turn to the left. I shot it a glance and it was a very large raccoon. One that got that way by not crossing streets against the lights.

358 So what is to be done? Should we do away with gun-free zones, particularly at schools?

What is to be done is that any business or facility that declares some area a gun-free zone is open to civil liability when a shooter goes there and picks off people like shooting fish in a barrel. Those who designed the "gun-free" zone and those who implemented it need to be open to personal liability, too. If it is a government structure (like a public school) then the officials who fashioned and maintained the "gun free" silliness need to bear criminal liability for turning people into slowly moving targets for the lunatics to play with.

People and businesses and government entities can declare "gun free" zones but they need to bear the appropriate responsibility when those idiot zones attract the lunatics (usually helped to be created by the bureaucracy of idiot psychiatrists doling out insanely dangerous drugs to mildly insane people).

The left have already leapt much further in the opposite direction by trying to pin liability on the gun manufacturers and sellers (which is absolutely lunatic .. par for the course for the left) but it's about time to stop that idiocy and pin the liability where it belongs - with those who work to disarm areas and people and then open them up to the fancies of insane villains driven further crazy by negligent psychiatrists with their insane "human drug tests". Most especially it is those in government positions who need to be open to liability for their disastrous policies - which is a huge problem (given the near blanket protection against liability we have always offered them).

People want to act all holier-than-thou and leftier-than-thou by declaring gun free zones ... great. Then bear the costs of the attractive nuisance you have created for the violent, lowlife murderers that these same idiot leftists love to keep out of jail.

378 358 So what is to be done?

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at October 03, 2015 12:13 AM (zc3Db)

^^^This. If you declare someplace "gun-free", you are entirely responsible for people's security there. You're asking them to put down their own protection and put themselves in your hands -- you own it.

Point of order -- they are not tame if hand-raised, they are acclimated. Difference being that "tame" involves outbreeding the aggression, where acclimating overlays it with pseudo-parental care.

458 Note how many females died in that shooting. They don't list the injured but I'm betting there was a preponderance there also.

Look at the pics afterward. They're falling into step just as ordered by authority.

Being passive and acquiescent to authority leads to lack of thinking for oneself and waiting to find out by watching others what the correct thing to do is.

As a result anyone with more will than they will cause them to obey first and question second. In this case it lead to a bullet.

That this guy was able to take the time to question them on their religion indicates how well he controlled the situation by will power alone.

It's why cops and bank robbers shout; to stun and overwhelm.

Works best on those who have not been prepared for this in some way and they usually are also generally weak willed.

That no one (apparently) came to help Mintz is a testament to the wussies we are breeding in this country. Or at least they're the ones going to Community College.

But the real question is why he pretends to care about what happens here, anyway. That all seems sort of strange. I have some strong opinions about how the Aussies run their country but I don't really care what they do to themselves. I might laugh at them about some things but I would never get wound up over something. They want to confiscate their guns? Good for them. "Knock yourselves out!" I'll laugh at it but it's not as if I would start screaming at Australians about it. A nice debate about their stupidity? Sure. But, in the end, I couldn't care less what they do. It's their country to screw up as they see fit.

But, for some reason, everyone in the world seems to think they have some ownership of this nation. Sadly, this is encouraged by the anti-nation-state left and the globalists on the "right" (like the Bushes). Many of the dipshits in Britain thought that they had some right to affect our elections - not just talk about things but actually lobby American voters and more.

This is why I was so offended when barky was allowed to hold the largest political rally of 2008 (perhaps in American history) in a friggin foreign nation, for friggin foreigners, paid in part by a friggin foreign government. That was about teh most offensive and repulsive political act ever committed, here ... and no one seemed to think he should be thrown out of the race for that (let alone jailed for that multiple offense of campaigning and campaign financing that the Berlin rally entailed). All McShame could think to say about that (McShame of the un-Constitutional McShame-Feingold campaign financing stupidity) was to call Barky a "celebrity". And then the world figured that they have the right to participate in our elections and to shape our laws. Mexico took that ball and ran when it joined Barky in suing Arizona (another act for which Barky should have been impeached ...)

It's just crazy. And pathetic.

Tame is when the natural defensive urges and territoriality is either channeled or suppressed.

Anyway half-assed psychoshrink can tell you, if you're really healthy upstairs, you don't need to compare yourself to others, to either put yourself down or up. You live your life and are happy to let others live theirs.

There's massive mental health dysfunction in this country IMHO. Just massive.

We also need to teach people to put their reason in charge of their emotion, rather than the other way around. But even if society was smart enough to recognize that need, it would take generations to fix.

I think he also might yearn for a global government. This is one of the reasons why leaving the UN in existence is such an awful idea. It never should ahve been born, to begin with, but at least during the Cold War the UN was nothing but a sad joke taht spent all of its time doling out resolutions against Israel and not much more. Since the fall of the USSR, though, the UN has been given many more powers (much thanks to Bush Sr. on that point, in one of the dumbest moves in all of human history) and actually teases the weak and stupid into believing that global government is just around the corner ... if they can just make that one last push. The EU stands as a good example of where they managed to bully the populations into their scheme - when the EU constitution went down in flames in the only votes that were allowed for it, the EU committee immediately swerved and used the Lisbon "Treaty" instead ... therefore not requiring any silly votes of the future subjects ... This all just whet the appetites of the globalist loons.

When was the last time it was used as a real base, anyway?

I heard Gitmo had the only flying club in the world that was limited to pattern ops only. That would get old real fast.

The story was my father who never smiled (true) and wore a pin striped suit to work. Was part of the Detroit Mob and we were in some kind of witness protection. One day my father hit a dog with his car by accident in the neighborhood. Knocked on doors to see who it belonged to.The owner said it's mine put it in this garbage can. 553 Ah, bigfoot porn.

It is, however, despite what the article says, not a new phenomenon. I remember seeing an X-rated bigfoot-sex mini-comic back in the '80s or '90s. The theme in that one, as with the new ones as well, was that bigfoot must be as well-endowed in the penile department as he is in the foot department.

And while I was typing that I had a flash back to a literary journal short story I read a gazillion years ago, published by a major university's English department, that featured a story about a woman who was raped by a gorilla -- and really enjoyed it very much.

What's old is new again. Except now, it becomes a "community."

VW's "clean diesel" looked like nice powerplants, except where the EPA is going to reprogram them to totally suck. And the best part -- it won't even matter. The ten scariest words in the English Language...

572 Slap, Chi, Merovign, Hat, Arbalest.....it's been one of those weeks. Sorry if I'm just dropping out and I appreciate you all.

573 Actually I recommended it after the scam came out. Aside from VW's monumental reliability problems.

You get the car, let them neuter it, then buy an "injector" to swap in a performance tune (it will get better mileage anyway, driven conservatively). Or just swap out ECUs.

Despite what would actually be huge savings, even surveillance-mad CA hasn't gone to roadside monitoring, so they won't know, and you'll have a better tune. Probably less pollution than stock anyway.

The BMW 335d would be a better car anyway.

574 *timing*

Personally I'd *settle for* an Audi RS 6 Avant.

575 WHY CAN'T I HAVE A 6 SPEED WITH THE RS MODELS!

Assholes.

576 Howdy roonz and roonettez! Roanoke VA right now, looking to finish our Blue Ridge Parkway jaunt tonight.

So far we've missed the first section from Cherokee to Asheville due to timing and the section from Floyd VA to Roanoke VA due to the road being closed because of weather. Mabry Mill was also closed due to weather yesterday, they had rain running into the back door. The rain and fog has kept us from seeing the spectacular views and brilliant fall colors.

It's been glorious.
